One NFL Draft Pundit Has Moved Landry Jones From the 4th Round to the 1st, Even Though Jones Hasn’t Really Improved
I’ve had Landry Jones in the first round of both of my 2012 mock drafts, and I’ll have him there in subsequent ones leading up to April 2012. I think he could be the 2nd QB taken in the draft, but that depends on if Matt Barkley comes out.
But remember in August when draft pundit Tony Pauline gave Jones a 4th round grade? As Pauline put it, Jones, “lacks great physical skills and a pocket passer that does not possess classic size or arm strength.”
It seemed bizarre at the time, but less than three months later, Pauline has come around and given Jones a 1st round grade. What’s changed? In Pauline’s report, nothing, really.
Has Jones been significantly better this year? Not really when it comes to statistics. With five games left (including the bowl game): Sacks are down (19 to 2), completion percentage is virtually the same (66 this year, 65 last year) and his YPA is up (8.7 to 7.6). His QB rating is up, too (158 vs. 146 last year). His interceptions are up, though (9 this year, 12 last year).
Makes you wonder why Pauline saw to change his grade on Jones, huh?
Jones is working with a solid running game and two future pro receivers. I’d be curious what his percentage of snaps under center are this year vs. in the shotgun (5:95?). As with most offensive skill players, in the right NFL system, Jones could flourish. Trying to make him a QB in a pro-style offense might take a few years. I asked Aaron Schatz over at the Football Outsiders for statistics on NFL teams that operated most/least out of the shotgun. Detroit was first (69% of the time), followed by Carolina (54%), St. Louis (53%), Buffalo (53%), and New England (52%). Unfortunately, none of those teams will be drafting a QB.
I feel the best fit right now – based on who operates out of the shotgun most and needs a QB – for Landry would have to be Seattle (45%). I’m eliminating Miami (45%)/Indianapolis (51%) right now because they’ll fight over Andrew Luck. Teams like Washington (34%) and Cleveland (33%) don’t yet have the personnel to put around Jones (and both seem to favor the run; though that could change if Peyton Hillis leaves the Browns), but I right now, I think they’d consider making a move on him in the first round. The intriguing Seattle situation is whether or not Matt Barkley comes out and gets drafted by the coach who recruited him to USC, Pete Carroll.

What’s really gonna get him is when he gets injured and AJ Feeley comes in to lead the Sooners to a big win over Oklahoma State.

wash and cleveland would be surprising…landry isn’t exactly mobile and the WCO’s prefer some QB mobility.

Are you predicting that Luck plays for both of them? If not, one or the other sure could use a QB.

It actually makes me wonder why you’ve graded him in the first round both times.

Wow…69 pct. out of shotgun for Detroit? Had no idea it was that high.
November 1st, 2011 at 1:28 PM
What was the percentage Carolina used shotgun the year before they got Newton? Same question for the Rams and Bradford. I am sure who ever drafts Jones will change their offensive tendencies to suit his strengths, assuming he starts. But I guarantee no team will pass on him because they don’t run shotgun enough.
/They’ll pass because he has bust written on him

probably a lot less before mcdaniels replaced shurmur and cam newton arrived when fox was fired.

Skins look terrible right now but they are doing a good job of turning the roster over. THey have definitely added some good players on the defensive side of the ball and are adding a few young guys on the offensive side. One of their many problems is they have zero depth.
I think they need to address QB in this draft if they ever plan to contend for the playoffs but the team never seems to have any plan for the long term so it wouldn’t surprise me if they don’t upgrade the QB position at all in the offseason.

Is Landry Jones really a guy that an NFL team would change their offense for? Andrew Luck is, which is why he is a #1 pick waiting to happen. But Jones isn’t Andrew Luck. In fact, I’m not really sure that Jones is remotely good enough to be an NFL QB, let alone a star in the league.
/system QB FTW!

November 1st, 2011 at 1:39 PM
Except he struggled during his draft year…Luck hasn’t been anywhere close to that.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see St. Louis (if they have the opportunity) take Luck instead of a Justin Blackmon. See what players or how many draft picks you could get for Bradford.

I’m not convinced that Sam is or will be a great NFL QB either, but that’s another story altogether. But, you could simply watch OU games and tell that Sam was a player, not just a product of the system.

You know what helps that even more? Having a non-shitty offensive line. Yes having more receiver threats forces an LB to drop back into coverage rather than rush or blitz, but their offensive line is still problem 1A while receivers are 1B.

i don’t disagree with this, but it’s not exactly easy to put together a beastmode OL. who around the league would you say has an elite OL anymore? is there one? success is much more dependent on audibling into the right play and the QB getting rid of the ball in today’s NFL.

It’s doable. Brees compensates for his height with his quick release, ability to move in the pocket so he can see passing lanes, and his arm strength. But he’s certainly the exception rather than the rule. His ungodly talent makes up for the fact that he’s less than ideal height for a QB.
But height isn’t everything. Schaub is 6’5″ but that didn’t stop the Raiders D-line from swatting down multiple passes a few weeks ago.

that’s the whole point and now we’re going in circles.
an elite OL is like what the jets had two years ago or what the KC chiefs had earlier this decade. the titans OL is pretty good, but every OL has issues with the hybrid fronts and the better pass rushers coming out fo the drafts.
think of it this way…the colts OL was praised for not giving up a lot of sacks when peyton was healthy, but that’s cuz he never hung onto the ball. but they couldn’t open holes unless peyton correctly audibled and now look how shitty they are. or the other extreme, like brady’s OL gets credit for how long he can just stand in the pocket even tho there’s 8 guys in coverage since they spread him out…doesn’t change the fact that matt light’s been getting raped by speed rushers going on four years now.
November 1st, 2011 at 2:01 PM

November 1st, 2011 at 2:04 PM
that’s the whole point and now we’re going in circles.
Reading the post of your post, it sounds like we agree. It’s difficult to gauge what an elite o-line is because a talented QB can mask their problems. You mentioned Peyton, and in another comment I mentioned Brees. I think he makes the Saints o-line look a little better than they actually are (well, except for this past Sunday).
But none of this takes away from the fact that the Bears still need massive help on their offensive line.

i know the tall scramblers spence, but the point was that all short guys scramble, while the tall scramblers are exceptions. and were they scramblers by design or for survival? there’s a difference between being good at scrambling, when you have to, and using it as a weapon.
cunningham i can see by design, but it seems like staubach was making the best of bad situations.
November 1st, 2011 at 2:35 PM
