CC Sabathia Opts Not to Opt Out, and Brian Cashman Signs 3-Year Deal
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the major offseason shopping is already over for the New York Yankees. CC Sabathia, who many had expected would opt out of his monstrous contract and test the market, has honorably decided to stay put.
Last night the Yankees completed a contract extension with ace C.C. Sabathia, adding one guaranteed year and an additional $30MM and preventing him from opting out and reaching the open market. The new total is $122MM over five guaranteed years, with the $24.4MM average annual value representing a record for a pitcher. If Sabathia avoids a shoulder injury in 2016, a 2017 option will vest and the total will become $147MM over six years.
Or, as Darren Rovell might tell you, CC’s contract now has the potential to be worth up to 8,400,000 52 oz. bags of mixed mini candy bars.
Was anyone going to offer CC anything close to this on the open market? Doubtful. So of course it was an easy choice for the big fella (er, cow?) while at the same time endearing him to Yankee fans nationwide for being “loyal” rather than flirt with the competition.
Meanwhile, Brian Cashman officially re-upped with the Yankees earlier this morning for three more years of endless stress and few smiles. For the life of me, I still don’t recall seeing him anywhere during the World Series celebration in 2009. The dude probably went directly home and straight to bed. Can hardly blame the guy. In a sick way, I had kind of been hoping he would at least meet with the Red Sox once Theo Epstein left for Chicago in the interest of watching everyone freak out, but it was not to be. Oh well.

The accent laden bleating in both cities would have been historic.

if there’s no other opt out year in this contract, how long do we give him until his weight sky rockets and he makes david wells look like a long distance runner?

And I didn’t think I’d ever say this, but I hope the Cubs sign Joel Piniero. We need an innings eater for next season.

I really just don’t see how he doesn’t re-up with St. Louis. Had things not gone the way they did in the postseason, then I could see him in Washington. Now, I just think he stays. Only thing that prevents it is if they hire a lame duck manager.

He has to spend less than 45 days on the DL with a shoulder injury to get the extra $20 million. If he feels a twinge in his arm in early August, I’m betting he grabs his right knee in agony.

Sizemore will get a one year deal from a franchise that is comfortable with risk. Hopefully it’s the Red Sox and he blows his knee out in spring training.
November 1st, 2011 at 12:39 PM
Unbeknownst to us until far too late in the evening, our front light was out (porch light is only via sensor)…so we only had like 4 trips to our front door (typical year upwards of 40).
yada yada yada…I have a lot of candy to eat.

Washington needs a CF and a leadoff guy. He’d be a perfect fit if it worked out but I’m not sure they’d be willing to take the risk.

November 1st, 2011 at 12:44 PM
/scans for mention of Giants
Yep, looks about right.
November 1st, 2011 at 12:44 PM
MLBTR has the Cubs in on John Turturro, er, David DeJesus. I’d be OK with that. That would put Colvin at 1B and DeJesus in RF. Or, in CF if they can find a suitor for Marlon Byrd. I think he sticks around until the deadline though.
I’m kinda buying what Dierkes is selling on Fielder to the Mariners too. However, that leaves them with a big problem called Justin Smoak.
November 1st, 2011 at 12:44 PM
I just hope the Giants don’t offer him the 5 year deal he wants.
November 1st, 2011 at 12:44 PM
It’s going to be an interesting Hot Stove season with quite a few good free agents and the Yankees and Red Sox not likely to be involved much.
November 1st, 2011 at 12:44 PM
Giants will take a run a Coco Crisp, I bet. They need a leadoff hitter. Well, they’ve needed one for a long time but he should fit the bill. Besides, he’s in Sabean’s 34+ year old age range.
November 1st, 2011 at 12:45 PM
This contract is going to make Carlos Lee’s look good on the back end.

I can see the Yankees getting Beltran. He’s always wanted to play in a loaded lineup where he’s nowhere close to being “the guy.”
November 1st, 2011 at 12:46 PM
I highly doubt Rollins is getting anything longer than 3 years.
November 1st, 2011 at 12:46 PM

But, he hit all those playoff HR’s!!
November 1st, 2011 at 12:47 PM
Rollins will be in Phillies pinstripes next year. I can’t think of anywhere else that are going to overpay for 3 years like the Phillies likely will.
I can’t imagine any GM interested in career advancement would give Rollins 5 years.

Can’t be worse than Soriano’s on the back end. $18M a year for 3 more years. He turns 36 in January.
November 1st, 2011 at 12:49 PM
imma miss you gaydy sizequeen.
November 1st, 2011 at 12:49 PM
Have you seen the Giants’ free agent contracts in the past few years? Overpaying is right in our wheelhouse!

Can’t be worse than Soriano’s on the back end. $18M a year for 3 more years. He allegedly turns 36 in January.
Fixed that for you.

i’m hoping they opt to fill their rotation with some minor league players rather than veterans like Colon.

Colvin on the bench? What, are we re-signing Derrek Lee? Because Carlos Pena sure as shit isn’t a Theo Epstein type of player. Not that Colvin is, but they’ll likely give him some burn next year to see what they’ve got*.

I think Beltran ends up in Boston. Still can play decent outfielder and if I’m not mistaken, y’all need someone to patrol that giant space you call right field in the funhouse park.

turned against him? not at all…that’s an ol’ romanwarhelmet classic right thurr. i’ll look back at sizemore’s time here fondly. he truly gave up his body for the team (and hid the naughty parts behind a teacup)…much respect.

Pretty insane that they can land a plane that large on its belly and people can walk away from it.
I have a friend who worked for Vought Aircraft when they were the subcontractor for the tail assembly of the 747-400 (they might still be, not sure). He was an engineering student who had trouble building a bookcase. The thought of flying on a 747-400 manufactured in the last 5 years frightens me.

Brian Cashman will most surely be arranging the meanest, raunchiest strip club visit for the winter meetings. Then he will forget to attend and Mike Rizzo will make it rain all over.
