The Recent History of No. 1 vs. No. 2 in the College Football Regular Season
With an eye toward No. 1 LSU at No. 2 Alabama Saturday in Tuscaloosa, here’s a look at the last 7 regular season college football meetings between No. 1 and No. 2.
Nov. 18, 2006 No. 1 Ohio State def. No. 2 Michigan 42-39
The Buckeyes won a memorable shootout the day after legendary Michigan coach Bo Schembechler died. There were 900 yards of total offense, each team had a running back rush for over 100 yards, and the game wasn’t decided until Ted Ginn recovered an onside kick attempt by the Wolverines after Chad Henne’s TD pass cut the game to 42-39 with two minutes left. Something to remember – a lot of people thought these two teams should have played in a rematch for the National title. But Ohio State wound up playing Florida instead, and in the game I think started the “SEC Speed” mantra, the Buckeyes got steamrolled, 41-14. The OSU offensive juggernaut could muster just 82 yards of total offense, and only lead 7-0 when Ted Ginn ran the opening kick back for a TD (he got hurt celebrating on the play). Smith, who had won the Heisman, was just 4-of-14 for 35 yards and was intercepted.
Sept. 9, 2006 No. 1 Ohio State def. No. 2 Texas 24-7
Early-season showdown was kind of boring. Troy Smith threw two TD passes – including one to Ted Ginn in the final minute of the first half – and Colt McCoy and Texas struggled. You probably remember these two standout backs from this game: Jamaal Charles (113 total yards) and Beanie Wells. Troy Smith went on to win the Heisman trophy.
Nov. 30, 1996 No. 2 Florida State def. No. 1 Florida 24-21
FSU’s stout defense – led by Daryl Bush, Peter Boulware, Andre Wadsworth, Sam Cowart and Samari Rolle – beat the hell out of Danny Wuerffel (he threw for 362 yards but completed less than 50 percent of his passes and was picked three times) and won at Doak Campbell.
Nov. 13, 1993 No. 2 Notre Dame def. No. 1 Florida State 31-24
Fondly remember watching this epic game in my basement. It was billed as the “Game of the Century” and Gameday made its first trip to South Bend. Lee Becton was Notre Dame’s workhorse running back who features prominently in the video below. Charlie Ward was the FSU QB who tried to rally the ‘Noles from a 14-point deficit in the final two minutes. Check out this incredible 4th and 20 TD pass to draw FSU within 7.
Ward’s last-gasp pass to tie the game was batted down, touching off an awesome celebration. Notre Dame appeared to be a lock for the National title game … except it gagged the following week at home to Glenn Foley and Boston College, 41-39. In that one, the Irish trailed by 21 with 11 minutes left but stormed back to take the lead. Listen to Tom Hammond scream as the Irish scored on 4th down with less than 90 seconds left:
Nov. 16, 1991 No. 2 Miami (Fla.) def. No. 1 Florida State 17-16
Still remember where I was watching this: my Uncle’s apartment in Baltimore. Nobody else seemed interested, but I was glued to the game. The QB matchup at the time was great: Gino Torretta vs. Casey Weldon. Three stars from the game that will jog the memory of anyone over the age of 30: FSU running back Amp Lee and Miami LBs Jesse Armstead and Michael Barrow. With less than :10 to play, FSU kicker Gerry Thomas missed a FG Wide Right. Bobby Bowden famously looked befuddled. Miami went on to win the National title. The following year, this series produced Wide Right II.
Sept. 16, 1989 No. 1 Notre Dame def. No. 2 Michigan 24-19
Look away, Michigan fans:
Rocket Ismail ran two kickoffs back for touchdowns and the Irish attempted just two passes – Tony Rice, the option QB was legendary – and Notre Dame won in Ann Arbor. Here’s what Bo said about Ismail: ‘That may be the fastest guy I’ve ever seen … He’s faster than the speed of sound.”
Nov. 26, 1988 No. 1 Notre Dame def. No. 2 USC 27-10
Tony Rice vs. Rodney Peete at the Coliseum. Rice threw a 55-yard TD pass to Rocket Ismail, and then Rice scampered around the end on the option for a 65-yard TD run and the Irish rolled.

Wow that Notre Dame school used to be pretty good.
October 31st, 2011 at 2:44 PM
gotta disagree here…im pretty sure that michigan was 2 scores down the majority of the game. henne’s TD cut it close, but OSU won decisively.
October 31st, 2011 at 2:47 PM
Are there any Alabama fans that comment here? We have lots of schools represented, some by several posters, but I don’t ever recall an Alabama fan. Is it because they don’t have opposible thumbs and can’t use a keyboard?
Go Tigers!
October 31st, 2011 at 2:50 PM
Chad Henne and Mike Hart were quite the formidable duo against OSU in their 4 years at Michigan.
October 31st, 2011 at 2:50 PM
Not decisively, but it wasn’t as close as the 2 point final would indicate.
October 31st, 2011 at 2:51 PM
Let’s not forget what happened to Michigan in their bowl game as well.
Nice post btw.
October 31st, 2011 at 2:51 PM
Didn’t Michigan get outclassed by USC in the Rose Bowl?
October 31st, 2011 at 2:52 PM
plus, you factor in the fact that chad henne is, and will always be, a motherfucking dick, you get the decicivery.
October 31st, 2011 at 2:52 PM
I agree with this. OSU controlled that game throughout. By the 3rd quarter, I remember thinking Michigan was toast.
October 31st, 2011 at 2:53 PM
I’m going with LSU.
/not a homer pick
//changed my mind in 3rd quarter of the Auburn game

Two of the sweetest words in the english language.
October 31st, 2011 at 2:54 PM
Let me have my moment. Seeing as how we just lost to Minnesota, I would ask this game be included. Everyone likes when Michigan loses, right?
October 31st, 2011 at 2:55 PM
I find myself pulling for LSU in this game. I like Saban as a coach, but it’s impossible to dislike Miles. He’s just quirky enough to be different from the robot-like tone Nick Saban (and most other coaches) put off. I think Bama takes it, though. Being at home and at night is a big deal.
October 31st, 2011 at 2:56 PM
KC, illformula is the only one I can think of.
October 31st, 2011 at 2:56 PM
Is Honey Badger back for LSU?
October 31st, 2011 at 2:56 PM
Go Bama
October 31st, 2011 at 2:57 PM
if jim tressel had gone crazy from the intoxicating louisiana bog fumes of baton rouge, he’d be les miles. LSU plays tressel ball only they flashed their tits and now have a bunch of mardi gras beads.
October 31st, 2011 at 2:57 PM
Just imagine how meaningless all these games would be if there was a playoff.
October 31st, 2011 at 2:57 PM
That was 26 years ago. Not exactly recent.
October 31st, 2011 at 2:58 PM
I’m going for LSU, that way when the Hogs beat them the day after Thanksgiving Arkansas will find it’s way into the Nation Championship game.

//changed my mind in 3rd quarter of the Auburn game
That quarter alone made me a believer.
October 31st, 2011 at 2:59 PM
It was 3 years prior to the USC v. ND game…
October 31st, 2011 at 2:59 PM
He’s play Tressel ball to a point, but he has the stones to do some crazy shit. Stones that were never apparent with the Vest at Ohio State.
October 31st, 2011 at 2:59 PM
I hope Bama steamrolls LSU. Mostly so I don’t have to sweat them covering -4.5.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:00 PM
exactly…ohio’s intoxicating fumes breed spincter-tightening conservatism.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:01 PM
Poor Eric Crouch can’t get a mention since there were Notre Dame games to be included
October 31st, 2011 at 3:01 PM
that giant tee thing they let them kick FG’s off of back in the day made that video.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:01 PM
LSU plays tressel ball only they flashed their tits and now have a bunch of mardi gras beads.
well done.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:02 PM
Auburn’s offensive ineptitude sold you, huh? The best performance I’ve seen this year has been Alabama’s destruction of Arkansas. Shutting down that offense is damn impressive. What LSU did to Auburn was nasty (and awesome) but Aub was starting some scrub as QB and doesn’t have a playmaker on the defensive side of the ball.
Gotta have a cutoff at some point, right?
October 31st, 2011 at 3:02 PM
Nov. 18, 2006 No. 1 Ohio State def. No. 2 Michigan 42-39
Couldn’t have asked for a better weekend for my senior year. That was a crazy 72 hours from Thurs night to Sunday AM. Too bad it all went to hell a month later.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:03 PM
I’m going with LSU.
/not a homer pick
Mine is. Tiger Bait!
/still afraid of Trent Richardson doing Manwork on Saturday.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:03 PM
Nice call. I remember the Nebraska front 4 owning the Sooners all game. At one point Chris Kelsey drove Nate Hyble into the ground, and when he got up a ref had to hold him as his knees buckled.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:04 PM
LSU wins it but its gonna be a battle. I’m thinking a low-scoring affair 21-17.
Off topic:
Taking the wife to Vegas in January for her birthday. Has anyone ver stayed at The Venitian? Or can recommend a pretty good hotel on the strip?

Illformula is a Bama fan. Doesn’t post much anymore, though.
Re: 1993…still believe that ND deserved the national title, and not FSU.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:05 PM
I actually think Bama will win, but I think LSU (the defense) will keep it a game until the very end.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:07 PM
Miles has done well against Saban, and he’s done so in T-Town. I can’t even begin to figure this game out. Both teams are so fucking stacked defensively. I think the front 4 for LSU is better than the front for Bama, but the LBs and better for Bama. The secondary is so hard to break down. Bama has the best duo of safties in the nation, but when the Honey Badger is your second best DB, that says a lot. THis game is going to be fucking badass.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:07 PM
OH NOES WE LOST IN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. WOE IS US.
All I remember is crushing Bud Selects and buffalo chicken dip at a house party for that game.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:08 PM
I know that the refs blew the fuck out of the Orange Bowl. That game was fucking bullshit.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:08 PM
I actually watched that from that beer tent/area with the huge screens right across the street from the Shoe. The one where people pee on the ground in the middle of a crowd packed in shoulder to shoulder. Yeah, Ohio is classy like that. Did have a good time tho.

October 31st, 2011 at 3:13 PM
Honestly, the odds are greater this game is a disappointment than not given the hype it’s getting.
The phantom block in the back and the William Floyd fumble mixed with the bullshit roughing the passer penalty on third down. Holy fuckballs did those refs blow.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:13 PM
The prevelance of police officers off campus for the OSU\Michigan game was unlike anything I’d seen. Almost on every block off campus were horse cops or a paddy wagon. They made the south campus gym into a jail for the weekend. Good times.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:13 PM

October 31st, 2011 at 3:13 PM

It would be interesting to see how that season would have played out in a BCS-type formula. Wonder if the championship would have excluded both ND and FSU in favor of the two undefeateds NU and WVU.

You really can’t go wrong with any of the upper end hotels on the strip (Venetian, Bellagio, Aria, Wynn, etc.). Just look for the best deal – which should be plenty given the economic climate out there.

probably not…we’ve seen what michigan’s offense looks like when they face a good defense.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:16 PM
LSU will be sick again next year. This is a young team. But this is more important for the fanbase. Especially the ones who have an inferiority complex over both Alabama as a program and Nick Saban as a coach over Les Miles.
/in other words, all of them
//myself included
///have more penis envy over Alabama than Nick Saban
October 31st, 2011 at 3:16 PM
through my Razorback red colored glasses, this is how I see it. the Hogs have played 1 home game since the middle of september, and in that game they ran Auburn up and down the field. now they have 3 home games before the LSU game, 3 games that are very winnable. 10-1 going into the LSU game will mean a Top 5 match-up. for some reason Petrino does real well against Miles, so anything can happen.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:16 PM
For the love of Tebow, please beat South Carolina.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:16 PM
That’s absolute horseshit and you know it. Between Bowden and Osborne NC’s were practically being given away as a retirement gift in the early 90′s. If Bo would have stuck around longer I’m sure he could have got a sympathy NC as well.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:16 PM
He’s such a nice guy. Deserves it. Tom Osborne on the other hand…
October 31st, 2011 at 3:17 PM
Don’t Iowa and Minnesota play for the “The Coach Who Wins Gets an Automatic Extension” Trophy?
October 31st, 2011 at 3:18 PM
Agreed. WVU beat BC the week after BC beat ND.
It was weird how absolutely no one gave Nebraska a chance against FSU that year. I got Nebraska +12 in that game I think. Maybe more.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:18 PM
Let’s not forget Taylor Martinez looking competent-to-above average against OSU.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:19 PM
But when you’re down 17-0 in the 4th quarter to LSU, you’re not going to just be able to flip the switch. If you’re down 17-0 in the 4th quarter of that game, LSU will have the ball for 11 minutes of the 4th quarter and the final score will be 31-0.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:19 PM
I seem to remember +17 for some reason but I readily admit I could be wrong.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:19 PM
for 1.5 quarters against a team with no QB and a gassed defense while running an incredibly pusstastic option.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:20 PM
Maybe Penn State should have pounded a sub-.500 Illinois team instead of getting 31 points hung on them…
October 31st, 2011 at 3:21 PM
You might be right…it was a good-sized number for a 1 vs 2 matchup, that’s for sure. Hadn’t Nebraska messed around with a cpl of bad teams that year…I want to say they had a scare from Kansas?
October 31st, 2011 at 3:21 PM
Let’s not forget a 35-29 squeaker against mighty Indiana.
So exactly what Michigan will run?

Penn State had a little bit of bad luck as their B10 schedule that year was front-loaded. Had they blown out OSU or beaten a top-5 late in the season instead of in October, things could have been different. Instead, they were on cruise control and had close wins over Illinois and Indiana.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:25 PM
not exactly…michigan’s running that with less talent while OSU can get a tidy 75/25 split of TOP in their favor resulting in another 21-10-ish win that’s not even remotely in doubt.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:25 PM
Iowa wants average consistently, though. That’s why they always shit their pants when Ferentz’s name is linked to another job and up his pay.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:27 PM
Yep. 21-20. Expectations weren’t all that great for NU that season, they just kept winning. They beat a mediocre UCLA team 14-13 and otherwise played only two ranked teams all year. The spread was probably justified.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:27 PM
I could easily see this. Where is the game this year? If it’s in the Shoe I don’t see how Michigan wins at all.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:27 PM
I don’t think LSU is as good as Alabama, and I think if we can establish the run with DJ (which I think we can) we’ll be much better. As nervous as the slow starts have made me, I still have faith. I know I should be rooting for LSU this weekend, but I can’t see Alabama losing to anybody else besides LSU anyway.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:28 PM
Iowa wants average consistently, though. That’s why they always shit their pants when Ferentz’s name is linked to another job and up his pay.
Don’t forget the occasional “Sparty Justice” like Minnesota gave them
October 31st, 2011 at 3:28 PM
Also, in 1968 Mike Phipps and Leroy Keyes led #1 Purdue over #2 Notre Dame. It was on the cover of SI.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:29 PM
Damn. Michigan gets both Neb and OSU at home, meaning they are going to have even years playing both on the road and odd years getting both at home? I’m not sure I would want that.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:29 PM
and osbourne should’ve given solich and callahan an introduction to whomever he was getting his steroids from for three decades.

/that is all
October 31st, 2011 at 3:31 PM
husker…the game this year is like cock…deep in ann arbor.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:31 PM
Illinois was over .500 and ranked at some points of that season.
That was no squeaker, Indiana put up 2 garbage TDs in the final minute against the 3rd team.
Everyone references the PSU D that year being rank ~70th. Check the halftime scores of every game, and then figure out how many yards/points were scored against the 3rd/4th stringers and walk ons.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:31 PM
Really? You think all of a sudden LSU’s run D (3rd in the nation facing run-based teams like Oregon, Miss St and Aub) will suddenly wilt in the face of Petrino’s pussy-ass running game? Tyler Wilson will have to go nuts for them to win. They have the WRs to have a big day, but they don’t have the OL to handle the 8-deep front LSU will line up opposite of them. Every time I think of ARK I think of Alabama shitting all over them.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:32 PM
and osbourne should’ve given solich and callahan an introduction to whomever he was getting his steroids from for three decades.
I think Solich stiffed that dealer on one of his first shipments and Nebraska got black balled, that shit from Canada just never was of the same quality.

Good for you? I was talking about establishing the run the next couple weeks so we can have some confidence/momentum going into the LSU game, especially if LSU’s season is deflated after losing to Bama. Every time I think about UGA. I think about how they got curb stomped in their own back yard against a Mountain West team.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:41 PM
Can’t wait.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:42 PM
The fact that SCAR and ARK are both in the Top 10 says a lot about College Football this year, because I think both of teams suck.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:44 PM
I was digging watching Miller the other night. He needs a lot of work as far as passing goes, but he got some speed to burn. It also appears as though the Illinois game hammered home to the players at OSU that Fickell knows what they are and is going to accept it (i.e. run the ball 80% of the time). They are going to be a formidable team when Penn State and Michigan come around.
I’m hoping Nebraska’s defense wasn’t a flukey thing and they are getting back to Pelini defense. They have road games with Mich and Penn State as well as trap games with Northwestern and Iowa.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:46 PM
miller is gonna be OK, provided he doesn’t get hurt (very real possibility).
nebraska’s defense is pretty solid. much better than earlier this year against wisky and the first 2/3 of the OSU game. crick needs to salvage his season and his NFL stock, so he’ll be fired up, you’d think.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:46 PM
I don’t want to say suck, but they are both flawed in some major areas. SC is just terrible all around on offense and Arkansas is okay on defense and weak in the running game.
38-35…WVU called a brilliant fake punt with 2 minutes to go, knowing if they punted it back to UGA that game was lost.

Dude tore his pec and is done for the year. The 3rd string DT did something to his knee and will be out until the Iowa game at best I think.

Crick has a torn pec, out for the saeson…

I do love how Arkansas is in the top 8, yet no one seems to care that they got beat up by Bama and have largely struggled to beat a bunch of average to bad teams.
In other words they’ve played the same schedule as PSU, but PSU is the horrible embarrassment while the Pigs are a top 10 team.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:49 PM
oh, shit…missed that.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:51 PM
Being able to complete a forward pass gets the voters’ attention. And, honestly, if that game was played today in the Outback Bowl I would thin Arkansas would be a 5-7 point favorite.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:52 PM
Hurt it in the OSU game, actually. NEB shut down MSU without two of their top 3 DTs. It’s why I think less of MSU than I think more of NEB.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:52 PM
I should re-phrase that, becaue you can put Nebraska in there as well (to SCAR and ARK), I would put PSU on a different suckier level of suck than those three though….
October 31st, 2011 at 3:53 PM
Same schedule may be an overstatement. What’s PSU’s best win? Illinois at home? Arkansas at least has beaten Auburn and (what’s turning out to be a mediocre) aTm.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:54 PM
I just looked at PSU’s schedule and they have played 1 ranked team, who beat them up and down their home field.
Arkansas got beat by the same team on the road, but has also beat 2 ranked (at the time) teams, one of them essentially on the road. Arkansas schedule isn’t great, and yes they have played shitty against some crappy teams (on the road) but they have proven a lot more than Penn State and their coveted Champs of Indiana trophy, so kindly, eat a dick.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:55 PM
PSU did bead Indiana by 6
October 31st, 2011 at 3:57 PM
see, this disappoints me on multiple levels…i appreciate the cult-like atmosphere at kyle and when i first got into college football big time, one of my favorite players was dat nguyen.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:58 PM
addendum to 125…it’s that their mediocrity has turned to business as usual that disappoints me.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:59 PM
So I’m supposed to be impressed that the teams you beaten were at one point overrated? Which basically describes a lot of “quality” SEC wins every year.
Defense wins games too, people too enamored with offense.
October 31st, 2011 at 4:02 PM
I had to guard him in a basketball tournament once. I’m 5’10″ 150, but it was an asian tournament so I was one of the taller guys on the team. It was a mismatch, needless to say.
October 31st, 2011 at 4:02 PM
And I wasn’t saying PSU is better than Arkansas (even though I think they are), I’m saying they’re ranked in the top 10, despite being pretty comparable to a team way below them in the rankings.
October 31st, 2011 at 4:02 PM
dude. I said Mountain West.
October 31st, 2011 at 4:04 PM
you don’t think PSU is better than Arkansas.
October 31st, 2011 at 4:08 PM
agreed, but some of Penn State’s wins are straight up pathetic.
@ Temple 14-10
@ Indiana 16-10
Iowa 13-3
Illinois 10-7
sorry, but that is straight up awful. either way, if Arkansas loses to LSU and after Penn State puts up a combined 5 points against against brasky, whisky and osu they will probably meet up in the Capital One bowl anyways and it can be settled on the field.
October 31st, 2011 at 4:10 PM
How could anyone be better than a team that gave up 28 to Vandy? Or squeaked by Ole Piss by 5?
October 31st, 2011 at 4:12 PM
Indiana. Illinois. Temple. Purdue.
October 31st, 2011 at 4:16 PM
My bad. And Boise is legit. They can hang with pretty much anyone. I’d love to see them take on Bama or LSU.
October 31st, 2011 at 4:18 PM
They are legit, but not as left as bama. That defense is unreal.
October 31st, 2011 at 4:18 PM
id fear for kellen moore’s life against LSU. he’s just a widdle guy.
October 31st, 2011 at 4:19 PM
Going into last week – Arkansas SOS #73, PSU #67
October 31st, 2011 at 4:21 PM
Again, I dont think PSU is a top 10 team. They probably arent even a top 25 team. However people keep shitting on them for being ranked 16 while a team with damn near the same resume is ranked 7.
In other words fuck all of you.
/runs away crying
October 31st, 2011 at 4:21 PM
The 2009 game is the one I would look at in comparison. A decent at best LSU team was winning at Bama going into the 4th and if not for a hazy non interception they would have had the ball driving for the win against the national champions.
LSU figures out ways to score even with their horrendous QB play at times. I’ll take the Tigers 23-21.
October 31st, 2011 at 4:22 PM
i hope you paid the cost to have the higher SOS.
October 31st, 2011 at 4:22 PM
Yeah…I think I know how the Bama/LSU-Boise game would play out. Both SEC schools have the DBs to man up and take away the underneath stuff that killed UGA. They also have the front to get pressure on Moore without having to blitz that much.
October 31st, 2011 at 4:24 PM
That defense is top 10, so I’d definitely say they’re a top-25 team. Nebraska’s 2009 offense was as bad or worse than Penn State’s, but they had a freak nasty defense and raped Colt McCoy for 3 hours because of it. A badass defense is so much better than a badass offense.
October 31st, 2011 at 4:25 PM
I love watching PSU win these games and not cover. They’re the best
October 31st, 2011 at 4:27 PM
also, while I think Arkansas is a pretty good team, #7 does seem awfully high. they have too many holes on the OL and all over the D. that being said, I think they can handle Penn State.
October 31st, 2011 at 4:31 PM
#7 is waaaay too high right now. I don’t know how they’re higher than Oregon honestly. But yeah, better than Penn State is a no-brainer.
October 31st, 2011 at 4:33 PM
the points scored between those two teams if they played would put last years Ark-Aub game to shame.
October 31st, 2011 at 6:39 PM
I’m 2 hrs late to the party, but PSU is down-right lucky to be where they are at. playing against B1G teams that are around a total of .40 winning % and almost losing a couple of them. they are good solid DEF team, but nothing more than that. a 10-3 Outback Bowl is about right where they fit in and the B1G conference is still at Tier 2.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:41 PM

Roll Tide Roll!
And most Bama fans are strictly Bama football fans. So they hang out at one of the approximately 500 other sites that have better college football writing than this one.
