Roundup: LSU-Alabama Week is Here, Fart Leads to Arrest, Colts & Dolphins Keep Losing & Man Roasting Raccoon Leads to Arrest
Ashley Greene … surfer in Monterey bit in the neck by great white shark … must-read: eulogy to Steve Jobs from his sister … terribly sad story about a 14 year-old killed in a car wreck … “A literary novelist writing a genre novel is like an intellectual dating a porn star” … here’s a photo of a snake after it ate a deer … “Naked driver in ‘wings of love’ Moscow rampage” … doesn’t this sound like that one episode of Friday Night Lights? … “The Movie Set That Ate Itself” … not a good look for Herman Cain … Jet Blue kept passengers on a tarmac for 7 hours Saturday … “Mold Moves Maryland College Students to Cruise Ship” … this guy built his house out of plastic bottles …
This is a terrific (but sad) read about Donnie Moore, and how the pitcher didn’t kill himself because of that homer he gave up to Dave Henderson in 1986. [Atlantic]

So glad to be at work today. Oh internet, how I’ve missed you.
October 31st, 2011 at 8:22 AM
In case you weren’t sure about the snake/deer thing. Here’s a better picture.
October 31st, 2011 at 8:22 AM
Great read on Maybin, love that his dad went to PSU, born and raised blue and white. Fantastic weekend to be a PA football fan.
October 31st, 2011 at 8:27 AM
the most scintillating pick-six return of the college football season.
that’s a fumble return
p.s. Dallas is super good at football, and will win last night’s game handily.

surfer in Monterey bit in the neck by great white shark – and lived.

“A man was arrested for assault after a domestic that allegedly started after he farted in bed and his wife sprayed him with air freshener.
At least he didn’t cheat in Monopoly. Women will cut you for that…

Animals scare the crap out of me. That snapping turtle video is insane, and snakes are eating deer!
October 31st, 2011 at 8:34 AM
Bizarro world? Because I saw Andy Reid extend his post-bye week win streak to 13-0.
/McCoy is top 5 RB
October 31st, 2011 at 8:34 AM
I completely forgot about the shark bite story.
October 31st, 2011 at 8:35 AM
that they also promptly killed.
that link is worth clicking just for the mugshot link in it.
October 31st, 2011 at 8:36 AM
Really going out on a limb there. The question is whether anyone has been better than him this season.
(the answer is “no”)
October 31st, 2011 at 8:36 AM
a special thanks to the fantasy football guru’s in here who told me to pick up Chris Ivory because the Saints were going to roll all over the Rams yesterday. worked out great*.
*no it didn’t.
October 31st, 2011 at 8:39 AM
I say top 5 because body of work so far and AR’s ability to go away from the run hurt him. Otherwise, he’s the best RB so far this year, better than AP, McFadden, Rice or Forte.
October 31st, 2011 at 8:40 AM
Shopkeeper: [Homer has agreed to purchase a Krusty doll for Bart's birthday] Take this object, but beware it carries a terrible curse!
Homer: Ooh, that’s bad.
Shopkeeper: But it comes with a free frogurt!
Homer: That’s good.
Shopkeeper: The frogurt is also cursed.
Homer: That’s bad.
Shopkeeper: But you get your choice of toppings.
Homer: That’s good!
Shopkeeper: The toppings contain potassium benzoate.
[Homer looks puzzled]
Shopkeeper: …That’s bad.
Homer: Can I go now?

you can’t spell elite with ELI
October 31st, 2011 at 8:44 AM
Fred Jackson gets no love…
October 31st, 2011 at 8:44 AM
This is exactly how everyone feels about Eli as winter approaches. Then it gets windy and cold, and I start laughing.
October 31st, 2011 at 8:44 AM
a special thanks to the fantasy football guru’s in here who told me to pick up Chris Ivory because the Saints were going to roll all over the Rams yesterday. worked out great*.
so you play imaginary football in your own mind, and you don’t even do that on your own? You seek input from Saints fans on whether they’re going to win games?
I had to laugh at the Pat McQuistan sighting for the Saints. That’s bad Oline news. That guy is a big sissy.
October 31st, 2011 at 8:47 AM
i keep trying to tell you, but no. it’s still “some guy this” and “someone named that.”

Checks morning paper: PSU at top of Big Ten…Steelers at top of AFC…
/Double checks first item again
October 31st, 2011 at 8:50 AM
enjoy PSU while it lasts.
October 31st, 2011 at 8:50 AM
also, i assume sergio winning back-to-back weeks gets its own post?
October 31st, 2011 at 8:51 AM
The only argument that could be made is for Forte or F. Jackson.
October 31st, 2011 at 8:53 AM
Bye week means I get to enjoy it for at least 2 weeks. May only need to go 1-2 down the stretch to get to Indy.
If Rob Bolden ever takes another snap I’m going to hunt down Jay Paterno and beat him with a rubber hose.
October 31st, 2011 at 8:53 AM
I really enjoyed the “blooper reel” performance Boldin put on in the 2nd quarter. My forehead still has marks from where I was banging it against the wall.
October 31st, 2011 at 8:53 AM
PGA Tour ratings … up?
Golf ratings are pointless. Golf Channel ratings in particular. Golf channel rarely gets even 1 ratings point. So for the article to say they went up .28 fails to note the overall #’s. THe product’s viability is all re: loyalist demographics. Finchem pulled in some impressive corporate committments within the past 2 years with Tiger’s future in doubt.
October 31st, 2011 at 8:54 AM
Agree. Both those guys have been awesome too, probably silly to pick. YPA is 5.6 (McCoy), 5.5 (Jackson), 5.4 (Forte). Very nice seasons.
October 31st, 2011 at 8:55 AM
AWESOME find. thanks
October 31st, 2011 at 8:55 AM
the big ten is one big jumbled pot of mediocrity right now…but it’ll be great seeing games with something on the line. OSU winning and PSU losing added some juice to the game that really didn’t need any more.
should be a fun close.
October 31st, 2011 at 8:56 AM
also, i assume sergio winning back-to-back weeks gets its own post?
The second ryder cup points started accumulating this guy goes balls out.

October 31st, 2011 at 8:58 AM
sorry, meant MSU losing.
October 31st, 2011 at 8:59 AM
and his new welsh gf? she’s a looker…no wonder he’s playing better.
October 31st, 2011 at 8:59 AM
Given the QBs involved, I would still take Peterson’s YTD performance.
October 31st, 2011 at 8:59 AM
Hey, you got the SB, and no one can take that from you or him. Doesn’t change the fact that Eli is a shitty quarterback in cold weather, and the media has the same Eli-boner every year around this time.
Save you the time on checking that, career QBR in Sep/Oct/Nov/Dec is 91/85/76/74. And no, other good QBs do not see a similar drop off.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:00 AM
Anyone else still without power? It’s 50 degrees at my house.
I am so glad we missed all of that shit down here in DC.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:01 AM
yeah, pretty much.

Save you the time on checking that, career QBR in Sep/Oct/Nov/Dec is 91/85/76/74. And no, other good QBs do not see a similar drop off.
Do you have his home/road splits? I know his #’s at the Meadowlands were terrible – and that place was windy and terrible for passing. (Note the year of the SB all were road wins, right?)
October 31st, 2011 at 9:05 AM
huh?
October 31st, 2011 at 9:06 AM
nope…just a cash grab tourney.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:06 AM
Do you mean passer rating? Or ESPN’s QBR?
October 31st, 2011 at 9:07 AM
McNabb: 90/81/85/90
Brady: 96/98/96/94
Sanchez (SSS, obviously): 94/61/77/64
Rodgers: 100/107/98/101
October 31st, 2011 at 9:07 AM
Sorry, not ESPN’s thing.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:08 AM
You won’t ever have to worry about saving me the time of looking up anyone’s QBR.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:10 AM
Yeah, except that doesn’t explain why opposing QBs outperform him there. And that SB run was nice, but it was hardly great QBing.

October 31st, 2011 at 9:12 AM
You won’t ever have to worry about saving me the time of looking up anyone’s QBR.
I just looked up Eli’s “eye test” results, split into quarters
Elite/ Quite Good/ Booed by Home Fans / Look Away, Look Away
So, they jive with those other numbers pretty well.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:12 AM
It’s a fucked up world when the Oilers and Senators have the longest winning streaks in the NHL. One of them is also the best team in the league currently.
Oh, and fire Jerk Ferentz.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:12 AM
The Playoffs were all road wins, the loss to New England in the last reg season game was a home loss.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:14 AM
Stop with this bullshit.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:14 AM
Ah, I remember Eddy Curry doing the same, only he was waiting for his order of 200 White castle sliders.

October 31st, 2011 at 9:18 AM
Eli scratches out a close home win over the team that made Tebow look like and NFL QB and you people are arguing over what it means? Should probably be talking about the late afternoon game where one QB was elite and the other was meh.

sorry I got a small chuckle at your expense reading the paper yesterday. that had to be quite the kick to the grapes, I assume Iowa City is in a state of panic?
October 31st, 2011 at 9:25 AM
Roethlisberger looked like an elite QB against the same defense that helped Ryan Fitzpatrick get paid.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:28 AM
Worst loss of the Ferentz era. Only Western Michigan in 2007 comes close. Combined with the Cardinals winning the World Series and the Packers winning the Super Bowl, I’m starting to think the invisible sky person has it out for me.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:29 AM
Got mine back last night. Quite the clustercuss this weekend.
The pats suck. Well, they don’t suck but Lisk can drop them out of that elite category. They have a Big 12 pass defense and with no deep threats they let Pitt play outrageous press man and get away with it. Still a good team, I think they will make the playoffs but unless something changes they are headed for a first round exit again. And the Bills are a legit team. Having a running game is helping them a lot.

Anybody watch The Walking Dead last night? Thoughts on Shane?
October 31st, 2011 at 9:30 AM
Can’t argue with him about his eye test. His eyes are never wrong….reason he uses it.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:30 AM
I love how all these years of being a Cubs fan, you never thought that before.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:31 AM
Between the Cards winning the Series, the Razorbacks and Vikings winning, the only thing that could have made mine better would have been being able to shoot the biggest deer I have seen in years yesterday.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:32 AM
Anybody watch The Walking Dead last night? Thoughts on Shane?
I fell asleep during the show. Not that it was good or bad, just a long weekend. I woke up with him shaving his head. I was in no position to understand the context.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:32 AM
I’m not sure if there is one of those elite teams in the AFC as of today. The AFC playoffs should be really fun. Lots of teams close to each other in talent level. Homefield will go a long way.
If the Packers don’t romp through the NFC, something is broken. The Saints losing to the Rams is worse than the Hawkeyes losing to the Gophers.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:34 AM
Beyond disappointed with yesterday.
-Saints lose (BADLY) to a shitty Rams team.
-I had to work because of the Cards World Series parade, so I’ve got everyone at the station coming up asking, “what’s wrong with your team, dude?”
-The station ordered thin, square-cut pizza from a place that uses provolone cheese. JESUS fucking CHRIST. Folks in St. Louis can’t make pizza for shit.
/still bitter’d
October 31st, 2011 at 9:34 AM
Ferentz is the Chris Johnson of coaches. He got himself paid (highest in the B1G), then just quit on his team.
Sucks, but it happens.

Game of the Century will be impossible to beat, but it’ll do a big number.

I’m glad something like that finally happened. It’s the first time we’ve really seen how I expect many people to act in that situation.

October 31st, 2011 at 9:35 AM
What the fuck?
October 31st, 2011 at 9:35 AM
I fell asleep during the show.
I can’t blame you. The first 55 minutes were slow and dull. The Shane thing is interesting though. It will keep me watching for a while longer. I was ready to take it off the dvr.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:35 AM
I guess he should stick with the on paper test, where the Cowboys have been Super Bowl champs for the last 15 years.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:35 AM
Anybody watch The Walking Dead last night? Thoughts on Shane?
I figured out the secret to the show. During the non-zombie parts, be doing something else. You’ll still pick up the gist of the show, you just won’t have to deal with all the God/Jesus parts. Or the re-issuing of the same apologies over and over.
It was super awesome that something happened, though. Something to move the grownup character story along (because I knew the weren’t killing any kids).
October 31st, 2011 at 9:36 AM

October 31st, 2011 at 9:40 AM
I can’t disagree with this. Mostly because it’s a shot as Chris Johnson… who through 8 weeks of football has less rushing yards than Cam Newton.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:40 AM
I figured out the secret to the show. During the non-zombie parts, be doing something else.
I was reading sports blogs. Catching up on the UGA win over Florida. I didn’t feel like I missed a thing. Blah blah, Rick and Laurie, blah, blah, Dale and Andrea, the crying mother.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:41 AM
The Shane part was the only interesting part of the show. They have spent 3 fucking episodes stuck in the same place. The show is so horrible. YET I MUST WATCH IT. I must sit through 30 minutes of Rick and his wife agonize that their son got shot trying to pet a deer. What a fucking hot turd of a show.
On the other hand, Next Iron Chef was awesome.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:42 AM
I guess he should stick with the on paper test, where the Cowboys have been Super Bowl champs for the last 15 years.
Dallas only has two paper championships for the past two years, and both of those are paper NFC championships. They have no paper Super Bowls.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:43 AM
their son got shot trying to pet a deer.
HE TALKED ABOUT THE DEER!!!
I’m laughing uproariously at that big of dialogue

Top Chef starts Wednesday.
Top Chef >>> Next Iron Chef

I want a gif of Chef Zakarian’s sly/smug smile when the judges were tasting his team’s dish. It was so fucking sweet.
The only chef I don’t know was the gay dude from Canada. He pissed me off in 5 minutes.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:45 AM
You mean something happened on Walking Dead? I tried to watch last night but just couldn’t do it.
something awesome (for that boring ass show).
October 31st, 2011 at 9:45 AM
They actually cut to a scene of old dude walking along the highway (at night not on guard for zombies at all) looking into the woods. It lasted about ten seconds and then we went back to the farmhouse. So much pointless shit.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:47 AM
Not with the lineup they have on NIC.
Hope he wins.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:48 AM
I don’t care one bit for any of the characters. I do want to see where they go with Shane though. Holy shit, Carl needs to die. And I hope they find the girl in a zombie’s stomach. So much to dislike yet I still watch.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:48 AM
They actually cut to a scene of old dude walking along the highway (at night not on guard for zombies at all) looking into the woods. It lasted about ten seconds and then we went back to the farmhouse. So much pointless shit.
that was in the graphic novel, so they had to do that

Holy shit this is a bad cap. The Marlins are dumb for changing to these colors.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:49 AM
Agreed. I was so surprised to see Spike on Next Iron Chef though, to go from a dude who (I think) just cracked the top 4 to be with all of the chefs in this one. Pretty big step.
Never have eaten his food though, only Top Chef people I’ve eaten from is Blais, Kevin Gillipse, and the other Atlanta dude, Eli Kirshtein.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:50 AM
Woof.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:50 AM
Nebraska beat the fuck out of them defensively. It has to suck for Sparty fans to know that they’ve lost two games when they’ve conceded less than 300 yards in both games.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:51 AM
Arkbadger…this weekend’s game might be the worst match-up of 2 Top 10 teams ever.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:53 AM
There had to be a more efficient way to do what Shane did. He was wrestling on the ground for a solid 30 seconds. Christ.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:53 AM
Could be, though Arkansas has looked good at some point this year. Not sure SC has. Really need Arkansas to win, dammit.

I ate at Stephanie Izard’s restaurant a few weeks ago. It was the best meal I’ve ever had at a restaurant before. No joke.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:54 AM
yeah, for sure. Sakerlina’s D-Line is going to eat up the Hogs. the fact that it is at the same time at the LSU-Bama game is not cool at all. if nothing else it should be entertaining.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:54 AM
Keith Brooking needs to hit waivers today.
What a terrible, old, slow, lost football player he is.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:54 AM
The Big Ten shouldn’t even be allowed to send a team to the BCS. The conference is so bad this year. Whoever goes to the Rose Bowl is going to get destroyed by Stanford. That is, if Stanford doesn’t make the title game.
Still can’t believe the Badgers lost to the Buckeyes. May have saved Fickell’s job.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:54 AM
So not even something like millions of people being without power will get you people to stop talking about the Walking Dead?
Ted, I live right outside of Reading. Still 40K + in my county without power.
Apparantly they had brought in a ton of extra people from Ohio as early as Friday, but there just are sooo many downed trees and lines all over the place. Really have to be careful when driving on not a main road, came upon a downed wire on the side of the road yesterday. MetEd is now saying that most should have power back by FRIDAY.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:54 AM
There had to be a more efficient way to do what Shane did. He was wrestling on the ground for a solid 30 seconds. Christ.
He could have started sooner, instead of popping those first four shots over his shoulder at a horde of zombies. But still, something happened. That’s undeniable.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:54 AM

/fucking loves Top Chef.
Also, Top Chef Just Deserts wasn’t bad this year. Much better than last year.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:54 AM
This all-star format of Next Iron Chef is pretty interesting. It’s going to give Top Chef a run for its money. I only saw bits and pieces of NIC but have it recorded and will watch it today. I will also watch The Walking Dead but, per Clay’s commment, I’ll probably be doing laundry or some other chore during most of the show.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:55 AM
So not even something like millions of people being without power will get you people to stop talking about the Walking Dead?
you still should have watched.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:55 AM
Well, their defense certainly has. Much of that is a function of playing offensively challenged teams…but they are on pace to break the SEC record for yds allowed/game.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:57 AM
True. That DL is insane.
October 31st, 2011 at 9:57 AM
I love Collinsworth and Michaels, but they didn’t have a very good night last night. Michaels, in particular, screwed up several things (the out of bounds kickoff explanation, the forward pass explanation come to mind immediately).
And then there was Collinsworth complimenting Keith Brooking when he first entered. Lee needs to be OK for you guys.

The zombie thing will go the way of the vampire thing sooner or later, right?
October 31st, 2011 at 10:00 AM
Keith Price wishes that was true. Johnson never had control so it was counted as an INT. Just like this was counted as not a catch.
And the play Saturday night was within a few yards of where two years ago Mason Foster had this amazing play.

I know AMC’s On Demand channel carries Walking Dead but I don’t know how soon they update it after a show airs.
October 31st, 2011 at 10:00 AM
Collinsworth and Michaels dressed as Troy Polamalu made sitting through that football game all worth it.

I’m going to Chicago next weekend to see some friends, knew I should check out some nice restaurants, but didn’t think of going to her place. Maybe I can talk them into going.
October 31st, 2011 at 10:01 AM
I dont know what we’re going to do tonight. I am definitely not leaving my cat at home by herself, so I dont know.
October 31st, 2011 at 10:01 AM
Considering both are super popular right now I guess the answer is yes?
All this question tells me is that you’re definitely not making it through the zombiepocalypse.
October 31st, 2011 at 10:02 AM
So not even something like millions of people being without power will get you people to stop talking about the Walking Dead? CJ
Then,
Anyone know if Comcast has Walking Dead OnDemand? CJ

Yeah, shoot the dude in the head. The zombies still would have gone after him, he would be nice and warm.
October 31st, 2011 at 10:03 AM
That’s the universe’s way of off-setting the awesomeness that will be the Jays new logo/uniforms.
October 31st, 2011 at 10:03 AM
I am just trying to figure out how I can watch the episode eventually, KC. Not discussing the episode. Dick.
October 31st, 2011 at 10:04 AM
Got into Frontera Grill my last visit. Well worth it.
I’m headed to NYC later this week and going to try to get in a few nice places as well.
October 31st, 2011 at 10:04 AM
I was just about to ask about her. She must be freezing without having someone to snuggle with!
October 31st, 2011 at 10:05 AM
Couldn’t have been worse than Simms/Nantz. They REPEATEDLY called every Steeler WR Mike Wallace, even during replays.

How long ago did you make a reservation?
Try Graham Eliott. It’s pricey but AMAZING.
October 31st, 2011 at 10:06 AM
She’s been sleeping cuddled up next to me, and Ive been covering her with an extra blanket and my arm. Doing what I can. We have the sliding back door blinds pulled open so she can lie in the sun rays during the day.
October 31st, 2011 at 10:08 AM
The Saints losing to the Rams is worse than the Hawkeyes losing to the Gophers.
I’ve been warning everyone about this Saints defense. Now the offense is slumping down to the defense’s level.
I truly believe they will finish no better than 9-7, maybe 8-8. And no playoffs.
October 31st, 2011 at 10:08 AM
I met Chef Rick Bayless once, I love him so.
October 31st, 2011 at 10:08 AM
Yeah, shoot the dude in the head. The zombies still would have gone after him, he would be nice and warm.
that guest star guy was probably guaranteed a quality death scene.
October 31st, 2011 at 10:08 AM
I’d say it’s well worth it. And if you like mexican, go to Frontera as well. That’s one of Rick Bayless’s restaurants.

Made reservations in June for an October date.
October 31st, 2011 at 10:09 AM
He’s not retiring til he plays for the Vikings. We’ve specialized in old, slow linebackers for decades. (Greg Biekert, Chris Claiborne, Dixon Edwards, Keith Newman, Sam Cowart, Ben Leber… and sorry EJ Henderson, you’re the best but… time to go.)
October 31st, 2011 at 10:10 AM
Shit. Was hoping I could make a reservation now for my birthday in January but that doesn’t look likely.
October 31st, 2011 at 10:11 AM
Looks like we won’t have to deal with 57 double switches in a game anymore. TLR retiring per Rosenthal.
October 31st, 2011 at 10:12 AM
I think Al & Cris mailed it in during the 2nd quarter when it was apparent that Dallas had no shot at making a game of it with that horrific OL and ILBs.
October 31st, 2011 at 10:12 AM

Can you really threadjack a roundup?
with sports. That rule goes for any post here. If what you have is info on sports, it’s a threadjack.

October 31st, 2011 at 10:26 AM

October 31st, 2011 at 10:31 AM

October 31st, 2011 at 10:31 AM
TLR to Boston
October 31st, 2011 at 10:31 AM
GG, I’m curious what route you guys have planned for the Leafs inevitable parade come June? Unless the Sens and Oilers beat you to it.
This is going to become insufferable if it continues.

I must’ve missed some news at some point … didn’t realize Adam Sandler was osu’s new coach. Cool.
