BCS Rankings: Boise State and Stanford Need Help.
Insert the normal caveats about the BCS formula being an exceptionally poor way to rank college football teams. The rankings are (1) LSU (2) Alabama (3) Oklahoma State (4) Stanford (5) Boise State and (6) Oklahoma (7) Arkansas (8) Oregon (9) South Carolina (10) Nebraska.
Stanford jumped Boise State. Oklahoma is creeping up behind them. It’s based on human voting and nonsense so it seems imprudent to get into “what if” scenarios. But, the top three teams control their own chance to get to the title game. Barring an apocalypse, the top six seem the only plausible entrants.
I’ve seen the light. Circular debates are infinitely preferable to watching these teams resolve them on the field, as they would in any other level of football. Thankfully, at least two of them will on Nov. 5.

Luck against Claiborne and Mathieu would be enjoyable to watch. Hope it happens.

I would rank the top 6 exactly as they fall right now. Not sure about Arkansas at 7, that would be the first one I disagree with.

I agree. The first 6 teams are pretty clearly the right teams, and seem to me to be in the right order. Even if you’d switch Stanford and OK State, I expect both teams to lose (to Oregon and OU, respectively), and both teams going undefeated seems quite unlikely. I personally think Boise should have a chance to play in the championship game if there are only two undefeated teams (say, Bama and Boise), but I also think they’d be behind the loser of LSU/Bama, and one-loss Stanford, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Oregon. This sucks for Boise, but doesn’t really have anything to do with the BCS standings as of right now.

/ignores the fact that the participants in a hypothetical playoff would likely be chosen the same way

If human voting and nonsense have to be involved, doesn’t it make more sense to have a playoff rather than picking only 2 teams?

Yes but Boise St would be in the playoff and have a chance to win on the field, which is what should happen.
