Buster Olney is Very Excited About Last Night’s Events in St. Louis
Last night may have been one of the greatest thrillers in baseball history, as well as an all-timer, and possibly one for the ages. All cliches aside, two runs in the ninth to tie it with two out, two more in the 10th to answer Josh Hamilton’s two-run shot, and a walkoff home run off the bat of David Freese in the 11th to force a Game 7. It’s probably fair to say what Buster tweeted is pretty accurate and not just morning-after hyperbole. That game was flat out ridiculous.
If Texas finds a way to recover from that merciless kick to the grapefruits, I will be stunned. One out, one out, from winning the World Series. How many times do they replay that in their heads today? Absolutely brutal.
As we wait for Game 7, one enormous question remains: Did this rollercoaster of baseball dramatics send Tim Kirkjian into a never-ending pirouette?

eh, it happens all the time.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
It is Hyperbole. The first 8 innings were pretty sloppy. Even that triple by Freese in the 9th was a sloppy play by Cruz. He should have caught that. Everything after that was great.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
Hernia, they were one STRIKE from winning the Series…twice! I do not understand the decision to walk Pujols. The double the inning before aside, he’d be struggling. Berkman had been on fire. Washington was doing everything he could to match Tony in overmanaging.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
i bet buster’s sock drawer is damn near empty this morning.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
Im no baseball historian, but best game ever?
October 28th, 2011 at 11:42 AM
why would he wear all his socks? i mean that just doesn’t make any sen…eeewwwwwww! you’re gross man….

Hell, one strike away from winning it. It looks all lined up for the Cards to win, but this series seems to do what we don’t expect. So that means Matt Harrison, he of the Game 3 meltdown, out-duels (or doesn’t do as poorly depending on how the line-ups hit) Carp tonight and Texas wins this classic right?
October 28th, 2011 at 11:43 AM
Can’t see any way that the Rangers recover and beat Carpenter at home in a Game 7
October 28th, 2011 at 11:43 AM
Dusty Baker and the 2002 Giants are confident the Rangers can put Game 6 behind them and focus on Game 7.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:44 AM
Im no baseball historian, but best game ever?
The back and forth the last 3 innings combined with the strategy (Tony using his all of his bench before the 9th? inning, should you pitch to or walk pujols, etc.) made it pretty compelling. Anytime you have a walk off in a World Series game it’s pretty awesome, but this game had everything.
It’s pretty easy to forget that this game was 7-4 Texas in the BOTTOM OF THE 8th inning.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:44 AM
the only thing that would have made that game better would have been if Freese circled the bases Ric Flair style after that homerun.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:44 AM
Maybe Buster needs to take a cold shower, but there’s no doubt this series has been fannnntastic.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
I do not understand the decision to walk Pujols.
I sort of understand it… you can’t let Albert beat you… but I think they probably should have walked Berkman as well, no?
October 28th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
why haven’t their been more TD celebrations like that? i would love for someone to do the Flair Flop.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
the rest thing makes me a little nervous, as he proved in Philly 3 days rest is tough. I think if he can get through 6 on adrenaline and they have a lead they will be ok. all though the bullpen’s regression back to regular season form is a bit concerning.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
Please don’t.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:47 AM
Carpenter at home in a Game 7
He’s not invincible. Brewers touched him up in the NLCS, unfortunately, the Brewers’ pitcher was touched up worse.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
Because he’s the best hitter in baseball. What I don’t understand is the overthinking on walking him. You’ve set up a force at 3 bases. But I’m sure WWoS will give us a pivot table to show the 0.075932 percentage point of a difference that pitching to him was better.
You walk the better player. I’d rather pitch to Berkman than Pujols. If you’re going to question Wash this morning, ask why he didn’t bring in CJ Wilson for the 10th instead of 74 year old Darren Oliver. Two lefties were leading off the inning. Bring in your best lefty that used to be a closer.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
I think the winner tonight has to score at least 8 runs. I don’t think this will be a pitching duel.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:50 AM

This times a million. What the fuck was Oliver doing in there is beyond me.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:50 AM

Sort of. Pujols is always dangerous, but he’s not been anything special since Game 3…walking both seems like overkill, at first, but hindsight is a funny thing.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
I’m in for anything that involves Ric Flair. Have you ever not had a good time when Ric Flair was involved? That’s what I thought.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
Sort of. Pujols is always dangerous, but he’s not been anything special since Game 3…walking both seems like overkill, at first, but hindsight is a funny thing.
He just hit a fucking double the previous inning. Right call all day long.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
And yeah, the Rangers are done. The Cardinals effectively won the World Series with that homer. I think we’re going to get a clunker 10-0 game tonight.
Hope I’m wrong. Just bet a decent amount on the Cards to try and help the Rangers out. Still the best World Series since Gonzo beat MoGod.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
Carpenter’s arm may fall off tonight.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
Didn’t JPQ have that great Ric Flair story?
October 28th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
Berkman was the only Cardinals player, I think, with a hit in every single game. He had drilled a home run in the first inning as well. He is seeing the ball really well right now. Albert has been reaching for pitches, his double last night notwithstanding.
I do agree though that Darren Oliver had no business being in that game. He did exactly what I expected Darren Oliver to do.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
What a guy did in his previous bat MEANS NOTHING. It’s just a way for manager’s to cover their asses.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
October 28th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
By the way, who is Mark Lowe? Like Butters said last night, I watch a fair amount of baseball and I had never heard of that guy before he made history giving up that tater in the 11th.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
I actually think that Washington was of the mindset that the guys due up hadn’t done shit all series and so Oliver shouldn’t have had the issues that he did.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
He just hit a fucking double the previous inning. Right call all day long.
Yes. A double. Not a home run. And it was a pitch that was left out over the plate.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
I cant wait for the day someone does this around the bases. My money’s on Nyjer Morgan.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
No question you walk Pujols in that spot. As fun as Washington is to watch, he made some turrrrrrrrible turrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrribble decisions last night.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
Didn’t JPQ have that great Ric Flair story?
What is it? I need to hear it.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
I don’t think it even entered the Rangers’ minds when they woke up this morning. They still have just as good of a chance to win this thing as the Cards.
Wouldn’t it be nice if they played 32 regular season games instead of infinity to make those contests as intense as this past week?
October 28th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
Sorry, Hernia. Bad memories. Didn’t say I liked that result, but that World Series is still the best one I’ve seen in my lifetime. Then probably the Tribe-Marlins in ’97 or Twins in ’91. I only remember bits and pieces of 1991 though since I was only 7.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
Yes. A double. Not a home run. And it was a pitch that was left out over the plate.
I just don’t think you can let one of the best hitters in the game beat you with first base open. You’d never be able to live that down.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
Why didn’t they walk Berkman too? That’s what I was thinking.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
I actually think that Washington was of the mindset that the guys due up hadn’t done shit all series and so Oliver shouldn’t have had the issues that he did.
I agree, but after the first walk, he should have been yanked. And Neftali can’t find the corner of the strike zone to save his life right now.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
before this series if you would have told me Darren Oliver still played in the MLB I would have called you a liar.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
YES, BUT WHAT WERE THE RATINGS?
October 28th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
They haven’t rolled over and played dead all year. Why would they start now? This is a ludicrous opinion.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
I just don’t think you can let one of the best hitters in the game beat you with first base open. You’d never be able to live that down.
Clearly we could go back and forth on this for awhile. It’s academic at this point though. I mostly agree with what you said earlier: if you were ok walking Pujols, why not Berkman also?
October 28th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
That game was flat out ridiculous.
YES, BUT WHAT WERE THE RATINGS?
I don’t know…but this series has been infinitely more entertaining than 98% of college football games this year. How many more 31-13 finals will we see Saturday?
October 28th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
I thought walking Pujols AND Berkman to get the force at any base was the right move. Intentionally putting two guys on is crazy, but Berkman has been pretty hot against Texas.
He’s also eats the corn out of people’s shit. Hate the guy.
October 28th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
CJ – I didn’t know Theo was such a fattie. Look at all the food he ordered.
October 28th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
He’s also eats the corn out of people’s shit. Hate the guy.
Pujols or Berkman…if Berkman, why? He’s got to be one of the most likable players in the game.
October 28th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
God, I can just imagine how Vin Scully would have made the call in the 9th and the 11th.
October 28th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
I remember Darren oliver starting game 3 of the ALDS 15 years ago for the Rangers. It’s amazing that he’s still around. I will say he’s been a pretty effective reliever the last few seasons.
October 28th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
I’ve been on a conference call for 2 hours and 20 minutes — needless to say I’m having a hard time paying attention.
October 28th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
Pujols or Berkman…if Berkman, why? He’s got to be one of the most likable players in the game.
I don’t have a problem with Berkman. If TLR, Carpenter and Pujols weren’t on the Cardinals, I’d hate them a lot less.
Holliday just makes me laugh.
October 28th, 2011 at 12:02 PM
It’s a pretty standard opinion this morning. Not sure if you’re a Rangers fan or not, but I would imagine you are. It’s just difficult to see a team rebounding from being a strike away twice to come back and win Game 7. Especially against Carpenter. I’ll be rooting for Texas.
I’m just a fan rooting against St. Louis and even I was crushed after that game ended last night. I can only imagine how the Rangers players felt. The Cards have their parents’ credit card right now. They’re playing on borrowed time.
October 28th, 2011 at 12:02 PM
I wonder if he’s the one who got the poutine
October 28th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
me and a buddy have nick-named him “Slew-Foot” during the playoffs. I don’t even really know what it means or why it is so funny, but just looking at him it seems very appropriate. plus yelling slew-foot is pretty enjoyable.
October 28th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
I thought Joe Buck did a great job. The only time I was disappointed in him is when he was eulogizing HGH Pujols in the 8th inning.
October 28th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
Holliday just makes me laugh.
He left a World Series game that could have ended his team’s season with a bruised little finger. Mike Napoli laughs at him.
October 28th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
canada, huh? almost made it.
October 28th, 2011 at 12:05 PM

Yes I thought he was ok for the most part. He doesn’t get points for originality or cuteness with his “We’ll see you tomorrow night” call. His dad did that one so so so much better.
October 28th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
porn for everyone!
October 28th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
the front of the sprots page in the ADG is him rolling his ankle. gross. how he continued to play with that, at catcher of all positions is pretty amazing. did they say he just rolled it I guess? it was pretty rough.
October 28th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
CJ, the page you linked to is blocked at my work, but I hope it’s this.
October 28th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
Napoli has some balls of steel. He needs to destroy Carpenter tonight and taste the Cards tears.
October 28th, 2011 at 12:09 PM
Olney said Boomstick is questionable with a strained groin tonight. Wonder if he strained it misplaying the out that should have been.
October 28th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
HA! That one’s great too. I linked to Vince Mcmahon’s haters gonna hate strut.
October 28th, 2011 at 12:12 PM
I still can’t believe Cruz didn’t catch that. They were playing deep and it looked like he found the ball quickly and easily. It looks like he misjudged where the ball was going exactly and so screwed up his jump.
October 28th, 2011 at 12:16 PM
It looks like he misjudged where the ball was going exactly and so screwed up his jump.
Looked to me like he was just afraid of the wall. He had a decent enough jump… he just let up about 5 paces before he had to.
October 28th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
I don’t know…but this series has been infinitely more entertaining than 98% of college football games this year. How many more 31-13 finals will we see Saturday?
lots of dead babies?

Looked to me like he was just afraid of the wall. He had a decent enough jump… he just let up about 5 paces before he had to.
I think this alone is the reason why I can’t jump on the “Best Game EVER!” bandwagon. This was just one of about 10 plays that looked sloppy and were just bad overall.
