my point about the competition was that unless the other entities have the same kind of access, there is no one to cover the tough stories if the T-P chooses not to because of the coziness. if there is no one to do that, the T-P doesn’t have to worry about ocnflict of interest. is it ideal, of course not. are newspapers gasping for air? with a gurgle

Listen, this kind of shit goes on in every major sports town. If you’re critical of the Yankees, you have the screaming trio of Kay, Waldman, and Sterling trying to destroy your. Hell, the Jets get a collective blow job from the local ESPN affiliate, who also doesn’t hesitate to shit on the Giants. All you have to do is listen to a beautiful piece of radio where Francesa and Revis got into it, and a Jets PR lackey took the phone and hung up. I’m not quite sure if the Mets or the Giants exert that kind of media control.

This is not as bad as Tom Benson owning the local Fox affiliate and feeding news stories to them, while also limiting access to other local stations that question the team’s activities.

Or Sean Payton blocking access to reporters who’ve been critical of him…or other radio stations that aren’t the flagship of the Saints having a harder time booking Saints players/staffs…

It’s not about the paper itself. (NOLA is a one-major paper town and usually the T-P is good). It’s about their new Saints website they launched and how they’re trying to make it the one-stop for the Saints against the local TV networks’ websites, local bloggers’ sites and local forums like Saintsreport and Whodatzone.
