Drew Brees and Other Saints Are Being Paid by the Times-Picayune to Tweet About the Times-Picayune
Expect to see much more of this.
The parent company of The Times-Picayune is paying five New Orleans Saints players to send out messages on Twitter encouraging their followers to visit the newspaper’s Saints website. Under a contract with Advance Digital, players Drew Brees, Lance Moore, Tracy Porter, Pierre Thomas and Jonathan Vilma each tweeted praise for the newly redesigned Saints community on NOLA.com this month and included a link to the site, urging their Twitter subscribers to check it out.
Expect much hand-wringing from the journalism community. Conflict of interest! they’ll shout. Someone will get Robert Thompson from Syracuse on the phone. David Carr’s friends at twitter might coax him to about it. Will the arrangement ultimately lead to the newspaper offering gentle coverage of Brees and his teammate? Because why would any of those players want to steer their followers to a site that is taking shots at them?
“There’s full transparency. There’s no suggestion that the act of paid endorsement by a player reflects on the coverage of The Times-Picayune,” Hassell said. “The Times-Picayune sports department coverage of the Saints is bar none the best and there was never an intention of suggesting these paid endorsements reflected on that coverage one way or the other.”
Smart move by the paper. The community loves the Saints. This will blow over – assuming it even becomes A Thing. Will other newspapers around the country follow the TP’s lead? Or will savvy teams who are also fighting for online ad dollars try to get players to steer fans to the team’s website?

THIS.
Yeah, I’m kinda disappointed about this whole thing, but I’m not sure just HOW disappointed I’m supposed to be…?

The entire city is connected so it’s a little bit like the mafia. Tweets for the local paper are nothing. However, I’d like them to tweet what their favorite bars are in the French Quarter. At least that would be helpful.

They’re too busy not writing about the fact that ESPN still employs Craig James but fired Bruce Feldman.

Eh, if it was something important I’d be concerned, but it is just sports.

This is not as bad as Tom Benson owning the local Fox affiliate and feeding news stories to them, while also limiting access to other local stations that question the team’s activities.

Hey TBL. I will tweet about your website for a fee. Of the three followers I have, I KNOW this one girl will totally visit your website. Every hit counts right??? C’mon, let’s do this!

Jason, aren’t you being paid by popup ads with Drew Brees and Lovie Smith? Guess you can’t ever interview them. Or anyone who wins one of those stupid player of the week awards, such as Clemson DE Kourtnei Brown.

who is the T-P’s competition? is NO a two-paper town? i cannot believe this paper can pay enough to make a difference to these players

Or Sean Payton blocking access to reporters who’ve been critical of him…or other radio stations that aren’t the flagship of the Saints having a harder time booking Saints players/staffs…

It’s not about the paper itself. (NOLA is a one-major paper town and usually the T-P is good). It’s about their new Saints website they launched and how they’re trying to make it the one-stop for the Saints against the local TV networks’ websites, local bloggers’ sites and local forums like Saintsreport and Whodatzone.

thanks fredo, that answers one question. the other is the amount they are paying these guys. cannot believe it would be more than low 5-figures

local bloggers’ sites and local forums like Saintsreport and Whodatzone and Canal Street Chronicles.
FIXED for “I know the guy who runs it”-ness.

Listen, this kind of shit goes on in every major sports town. If you’re critical of the Yankees, you have the screaming trio of Kay, Waldman, and Sterling trying to destroy your. Hell, the Jets get a collective blow job from the local ESPN affiliate, who also doesn’t hesitate to shit on the Giants. All you have to do is listen to a beautiful piece of radio where Francesa and Revis got into it, and a Jets PR lackey took the phone and hung up. I’m not quite sure if the Mets or the Giants exert that kind of media control.

my point about the competition was that unless the other entities have the same kind of access, there is no one to cover the tough stories if the T-P chooses not to because of the coziness. if there is no one to do that, the T-P doesn’t have to worry about ocnflict of interest. is it ideal, of course not. are newspapers gasping for air? with a gurgle

when are they not hand-wringing?
October 26th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
As long as Hokie’s commentary is not affiliated with this move, I can’t complain.

Doesn’t Kim K pull down a boat load when she mentions product? Can’t say this is surprising, you have a captive audience that WILL read anything about your product.

Kind of like ESPN with anyone it’s in bed with.
Or TBL with NyQuill and Buffalo Wild WIngs. When will we see TBL’s expose on Buffalo Wild Wings?!

well, they are regularly scooped by other organizations because it’s national

All the “journalism” community does is complain, bitch and moan about everything. This would be par for the course.
October 27th, 2011 at 10:52 AM
This is no worse than anything ESPN does.
