NFL Week 7 Power Rankings
This week’s power rankings try to stay calm in the face of upsets. Everyone has their own goals with the rankings, some just going by records. I try to watch as many games as possible, look at the objective rankings and underlying numbers, adjust for who teams have played also, as well as how they have played, and account for injuries, but nothing’s perfect. The goal is to have rankings that will hold up predictively while still reflecting how the games have gone so far.
SUPER BOWL FAVORITES TIER
Green Bay Packers (7-0): The Packers will not lose this week, either (bye week)
New England Patriots (5-1): New England’s tight ends and Welker against the Steelers. This should be fun. We’ve seen the Patriots handle Pittsburgh’s defense with short passes before. (at Pittsburgh)
SUPER BOWL CONTENDERS TIER
New Orleans Saints (5-2): Sean Payton may want to just stay up in the press box and call games for good. (at St. Louis)
San Francisco 49ers (5-1): Frank Gore is 109 rushing yards away from passing Roger Craig for 2nd all-time for the 49er franchise. (vs. Cleveland)
Baltimore Ravens (4-2): Million dollar defense, ten cent quarterback. (vs. Arizona)
PLAYOFF CONTENDERS TIER
Pittsburgh Steelers (5-2): How good are the Steelers? So far we know they are better than the bad teams, and they need a better performance than opening day against their toughest opponent since losses to Baltimore and Houston. (vs. New England)
Houston Texans (4-3): Arian Foster joins Brian Westbrook, Priest Holmes, Larry Brown, LeRoy Kelly, Billy Cannon and Jim Brown as the only backs to have 100+ yards rushing and receiving and 3 touchdowns in one game. Sorry for overreacting last year about Foster after one game. (vs. Jacksonville)
Dallas Cowboys (3-3): Wally Pipp thinks Felix Jones is in trouble, but then again, Wally Pipp didn’t go to the same school as Jacob Rupert. (at Philadelphia)
Buffalo Bills (4-2): Where have you gone, Fred Jackson? My fantasy team lifts its lonely eyes to you, ooh ooh ooh. (vs. Washington)
New York Giants (4-2): There are must-win games to catch teams, then there are games against dreadful teams at home like Miami that you cannot afford to give away to hold steady. (vs. Miami)
Atlanta Falcons (4-3): The Falcons will use the bye week to put a new ankle on Matt Ryan.(bye week)
Detroit Lions (5-2): Calm down, Detroit. Two losses at home to good teams is not the end of the world. Since 1978, 31 different teams made the playoffs while losing 3 or more home games to teams that ended the year with winning records. (at Denver)
New York Jets (4-3): Fun Plaxico Burress stat–only one other player in NFL history had 3 receiving touchdowns in a game with fewer receiving yards than Burress’ 25 yard performance last week. I’m sure you all remember Mack Alston. (bye week)
THE CLOCK MANAGEMENT AND PROPER USE OF CHALLENGES TIER
Chicago Bears (4-3): Matt Forte is playing really well, and I know it’s popular to say ”pay the man” and point to his current salary. I’ll just point out the Bears have made offers and the issue isn’t whether the Bears are willing, it’s how much to pay a back going forward. Maybe I’ll take a look at backs like Forte at the same age and productivity. (bye week)
San Diego Chargers (4-2): Philip Rivers ran the two minute drill at a pace that would have made Craig Heyward proud. (at Kansas City)
Philadelphia Eagles (2-4): Hey, it’s the “we thought we were going to get Nnamdi” bowl, part I. (vs. Dallas)
Cincinnati Bengals (4-2): I hope the Bengals rushed to the bank and deposited those draft picks before someone puts a “stop payment” order on them. (at Seattle)
Oakland Raiders (4-3): Kyle BLOLler. I’ll give them a pass until we see how they play with Palmer having two weeks to prepare, before I downgrade them off that ridiculous performance.(bye week)
Washington Redskins (3-3): I need Kanye West to come out and say what the rest of us know: Mike Shanahan hates fantasy football players. (at Buffalo)
CLUTCH QUARTERBACK TIER
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-3): This team is hurting for running backs as well. (bye week)
Tennessee Titans (3-3): After a promising start, the Titans have spit up twice against good competition in Pittsburgh and Houston. (vs. Indianapolis)
Carolina Panthers (2-5): I still love the Panthers over the 4.5 win total, and they could get to #3 at home this week in a matchup of rookie quarterbacks. (vs. Minnesota)
Kansas City Chiefs (3-3): Bean bags, facial hair, and playing Donovan McNabb, Curtis Painter, and Kyle Boller have brought the Chiefs back in the West race. (vs. San Diego)
Minnesota Vikings (1-6): Christian Ponder did look better than McNabb, and the Vikings played a competitive game. (at Carolina)
Denver Broncos (2-4): Tim Tebow against the Lions jokes will be plentiful this week. (vs. Detroit)
Jacksonville Jaguars (2-5): Blaine Gabbert has pretty bad pocket awareness at this point, though he hasn’t drawn many good matchups to get comfortable either. That continues this week against a team that can rush the passer. (at Houston)
THESE TEAMS COMBINED FOR 9 POINTS TIER
Cleveland Browns (3-3): I had to check to make sure the Browns were 3-3, because they seem really bad. The wins, though, are Seattle, Miami, and Indianapolis. (at San Francisco)
Seattle Seahawks (2-4): Sadly, Tarvaris Jackson >> Charlie Whitehurst. Career yards per attempt holding steady at 5.1. (vs. Cincinnati)
Arizona Cardinals (1-5): Beanie Wells got hurt? Inconceivable. (at Baltimore)
LOSE A TON FOR OLIVER’S SON TIER
Miami Dolphins (0-6): Tony Sparano will be pleading with officials not to flip the coin, because the aftermath could cost him his job. (at NY Giants)
St. Louis Rams (0-6): The Rams are ranked too high. (vs. New Orleans)
Indianapolis Colts (0-7): Jim Irsay will offer money if you correctly tweet him the week that Jim Caldwell will be fired. (at Tennessee)

This will be part II. Part I was at Metlife Stadium in week 1.
October 25th, 2011 at 1:50 PM
Needs more dirty sons of bitches distraction talk.
And call me a homer, but how are the Chicago Bears not in the playoff contender tier? Have you seen the Lions remaining schedule compared to Chicago’s? I’m not saying either is even making the playoffs but the Lions are contenders, so are the Bears.
I’d bump the Ravens down even further. Joe Flacco is Trent Dilfer but Ray Lewis is 36, not 26.
October 25th, 2011 at 1:52 PM
B-B-B-B-Bills!
/pours one out for jpq
October 25th, 2011 at 1:52 PM
The fact that you have both the 49ers and the Ravens as SB contenders invalidates this entire list, and quite frankly makes you look silly.
October 25th, 2011 at 1:52 PM
Fixed
October 25th, 2011 at 1:55 PM
dallas is 3-3.
October 25th, 2011 at 1:59 PM
since dan asked on twitter, here’s my thoughts on QB tiers in the NFL … i don’t make any drastic moves based on one week or one season. all-encompassing – reg season and playoffs
Top: Brady, Peyton, Brees, Rodgers, Roethlisberger, Rivers
next batch: Vick, Sanchez, Romo, Cutler, Eli
next group: Cam Newton (still only 7 games, by season’s end, he could be in group 2), Stafford, Fitzpatrick, Schaub, Freeman, Jason Campbell
too early too tell/too far beyond their prime/not very good: McNabb, A Smith, Cassel, Dalton, Hasselbeck, Kolb, Flacco
October 25th, 2011 at 2:01 PM
Sorry for overreacting last year about Foster after one game.
It’s kind of amusing to see the amount of now exiled commenters were still around just a little over a year ago.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:02 PM
Trollingest of trolls right there.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:03 PM
those are the two most complimentary things I have read about the Vikings all year. thanks Lisk.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:03 PM
next batch: Vick, Sanchez, Romo, Cutler, Eli
I don’t even know what to say anymore man, I really don’t.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:03 PM
/tire screeching sound
October 25th, 2011 at 2:03 PM
Because…? He’s second tier, you cannot tell me otherwise. All kinds of talent around him on both sides of the ball and they can’t beat good teams. Ever.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:04 PM
browns offense is horrible. the D? not too bad, actually. well, not bad when joe haden’s healthy.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:04 PM
also, it’s been a while since TBL dropped the comment bomb, this should be entertaining.

cute. very cute
October 25th, 2011 at 2:04 PM
I’m with coop on Rivers. May be the top of the second tier but he is second tier…on second thought.. Eli Manning > Rivers and Vick
October 25th, 2011 at 2:05 PM
In what universe has Mark Sanchez been better than Matt Schaub. Have you been doing wippits out of a balloon to entertain your child TBL? Because helium can affect the brain over time you know.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:05 PM
next batch: Vick, Sanchez, Romo, Cutler, Eli
Matt Ryan? Schaub?
I would take both these guys over Sanchez and Romo.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:05 PM
Also, it’s not really Schaub’s fault that Houston hasn’t made the playoffs. He’s low 2nd tier/high 3rd tier.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:05 PM
If Ward is out, and it looks like he may be, I would hammer the over. Both defense’s are going to have a tough time slowing down the offenses.
/hopes 4 INT Brady shows up.
//BOOM!!
October 25th, 2011 at 2:06 PM
but..but..the Jets got to 2 straight AFC title games!
Jets fans are the only ones who think Sanchez is a good QB
October 25th, 2011 at 2:07 PM
The one where the word “leads” in placed after his name and before the phrase “to the AFC title game.” So… yeah. Take it for what it’s worth.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:07 PM
also, Bills gonna light up the Redskins like a Christmas tree this week

October 25th, 2011 at 2:10 PM
At least the Browns are getting better, Spence. They’re not getting worse. That’s gotta be a positive.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:10 PM
It’s bad when you troll your own site and your commenters don’t even really get mad.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:10 PM
oh, they’ve gotten much worse, SC. MUCH worse.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:11 PM
Did you watch Sunday’s game?
October 25th, 2011 at 2:11 PM
ok, maybe not much worse because there wasn’t much room for worseprovement.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:12 PM
Ricky Watters? Garrison Hearst?
**googles**
Oh, Joe Perry.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:12 PM
How is that possible?!?! Steinbach was a loss but the OL is otherwise good. The defense has definitely improved. Colt McCoy is… well, he’s just alright. The Browns are a NFL QB away from competing in the AFC North, right?
OK, maybe some wide receivers too.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:13 PM
Considering they’d own a tiebreaker over the Falcons and Bucs I’m inclined to agree with this…just be sure to beat Detroit in two weeks
October 25th, 2011 at 2:13 PM
lolz at Cam Newton a tier below Sanchez.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:14 PM
redskins too high.

October 25th, 2011 at 2:14 PM
if the Bears continue to use this offensive formula, they’ll definitely make the playoffs
October 25th, 2011 at 2:15 PM
SC…it’d be nice to have a play where WR’s are more than 5 yards downfield. can’t blame mccoy for not going deep when shurmur flat out refuses to run anything beyond a 15-yard box.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:15 PM
See! Even the Packers fan agrees with me. And I’ll return the favor…
The Packers are hands down the best team in the NFL and no one is really close. They are going to embarrass Chicago on Christmas day. It will leave me actually wanting Bulls basketball on that day instead.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:15 PM
Don’t worry. They’ll fall more after Sunday in Toronto. Fred Jackson for 150 on the ground. book it!
October 25th, 2011 at 2:15 PM
GOAT.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:16 PM
Few points here I’d like to make
1. Cam Newton has a terrible TD celebration (looks too much like that stupid one Rodgers does)
2. 49′ers are not SB contenders
3. Bears should be playoff contenders due to the fact they basically play the same schedule as the Lions do
October 25th, 2011 at 2:16 PM
Which game will be more of a beatdown – Packers/Lions on Thanksgiving or Packers/Bears on Christmas?
October 25th, 2011 at 2:16 PM
ok, maybe not much worse because there wasn’t much room for worseprovement.

If anything Romo is better than Rivers at this point. Has thrown more TDs in a season, similar QB rating, and he plays in a tougher division.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:18 PM
I think the Lions will hand the Packers their first loss on Turkey Day in Detroit actually.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:18 PM
so what’s the story on Hillis? is he being an incredible pussy or is his hammy really that bad? are clevelanders getting ready to turn on him?

October 25th, 2011 at 2:18 PM
I’d guess neither will be but if one got out of hand it would be Thanksgiving due to it being indoors where the offense really dominates…plus the Bear defense always annoys Rodgers even if they don’t win the games very often
October 25th, 2011 at 2:18 PM
The Packers are hands down the best team in the NFL and no one is really close.
You were good until you added the part about nobody being close. Pats are pretty good, Saints almost beat them IN GB.
GB’s defense is shaky at times and let a rookie QB keep it close with them.

October 25th, 2011 at 2:19 PM
In what universe has Mark Sanchez been better than Matt Schaub.
The universe where you judge a QB by how many high school receivers attend his pro day.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:19 PM
Going back to 1962 when Bart Starr got run over again and again, the Packers in Detroit on Thansgiving is never a good thing. However, the Packers might have the division wrapped up on Xmas and showing a lot of Flynn and whoever ends up being the third string RB so…who knows.
/both Ws
October 25th, 2011 at 2:19 PM
What happens to the Bears if an opponent limits Forte to just 2/3 of his current production? That guy is carrying the team.
Also, they’ve gotta be playoff contenders as long as he’s all over the field and Detroit remains Detroit.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:19 PM
Which is ironic b/c you once said that ypa and comp % were the best ways to measure a qb. Sanchez is (no matter how you look at it) in the bottom third of the entire league in these two categories.
So I guess your tiers should be described, “Tiers of quarterbacks based on something other than individual performance”
October 25th, 2011 at 2:20 PM
To be fair Adrian Peterson kept them in the game…Ponder played competently but 13/32 is still 13/32, the few third down conversions I think have people thinking he was better than he was
October 25th, 2011 at 2:20 PM
Whoa whoa whoa whoa. Stop the clock. Are people here actually saying Detroit is overrated and their record is somewhat questionable as the wins came against bad teams?
October 25th, 2011 at 2:20 PM

I didn’t gleam that, but I didn’t read every comment. It’s possible, as it’s easy to shit on Detroit.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:21 PM
To be fair Adrian Peterson kept them in the game…Ponder played competently but 13/32 is still 13/32, the few third down conversions I think have people thinking he was better than he was
Very true. Either way, they let a bad team hang around and keep it close.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:21 PM
i think his hammy’s that bad. and not ready to turn, just frustration. we just want our single, solitary competent, non-joe thomas/alex mack offensive player back.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:21 PM
They lose and I agree. He’s really good but he needs help. Martz also needs to stop this 1st and Goal from the 5 three straight passes shit. Give the man the ball on the goalline. Or even Barber. We don’t have a redzone target.
I do look forward to the rematch against the Lions at Soldier. I think that one has potential to be an outstanding game.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:21 PM
SOS
October 25th, 2011 at 2:22 PM
What happens to the Bears if an opponent limits Forte to just 2/3 of his current production?
The Bears begin depending again on Cutler-to-Williams.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:22 PM
Did TBL really say this, because that sounds nothing like him? Now if he said they were good measurements after using the eye ball test, road playoff wins and clutchiness, then that sounds more in line with TBL.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:22 PM
Romo is better than Rivers at this point. Similar career QB rating, has thrown for more TDs in a season than Rivers and plays in a tougher division. If anything switch Rivers and Romo or put Rivers in that second tier
October 25th, 2011 at 2:22 PM
They lose by 10 at home.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:23 PM
You’re correct sir.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:24 PM
What’s Samkon Gado up to these days?
In 5/6 of the Viking losses they’ve kept it close against teams with a combined record of 19-8…they’re better than the true dregs of the league
October 25th, 2011 at 2:24 PM
Would you rather he dump off several more passes a la Jomark Flacchez to get the completion percentage up? 13 for 32 is not so good, yes, but all five completions in the 4th quarter went for first downs, and I don’t think any got any yards after the catch.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:26 PM
I was really surprised how badly they played in Chicago. Lovie Smith coached teams should not be blowing teams out like that.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:26 PM
the only reason I asked was because I was sitting in my truck at lunch listening to a local guy who played for the Hogs and in the NFL basically call him out and saying he was being selfish and that back in his day players wouldn’t listen to their agent (going back a couple weeks) telling them to sit out and that he needed to suck it up and play. kind of wondered what Browns fans felt about it.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:26 PM
next batch: Vick, Sanchez, Romo, Cutler, Eli
Ironically enough, I think Sanchez isn’t the problem here. It’s Cutler and Romo.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:27 PM
Hasn’t happened yet. Look at the amount of carries Forte had in the box score link MU provided. If Martz doesn’t get Forte his carries then you’re going to lose by 10 or more points.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:28 PM
So the Saints went back from Playoff Contenders to Super Bowl Contenders based on blowing out the Colts?! BulletJoeBush will heartily disagree with my assessment, but don’t base your Saints rating on a showing against a Luck-sucking team.
/ I say this with love for the Saints, and 44 years of mostly heartache
October 25th, 2011 at 2:28 PM
This is fucking scary. Privacy does not exist.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:28 PM
The Vikings NEVER play well in Chicago for some reason. The only time I remember them winning was Peterson willing them with 200+ yards rushing and that awesome kick return. I can think of several bad losses off the top of my head – the Jim Miller shred-job, the TD Tillman stole from Moss, the near Favre comeback in 2009…
October 25th, 2011 at 2:29 PM
They’re seems to be confusion do maybe I should just start coming up with names for all tiers. Just think of the playoff contender tier as the 3rd tier. No AFC West team in top 3 but clearly all contenders in the literal sense. If I think team A will go 8-8 because they have a tougher schedule than a team that will go 10-6, I will rank the team I think is better higher. I’m not saying that Bears are not literally a contender for the playoffs. I just have them at the top of the next tier. A quality win will move them up.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:30 PM
It will probably be a close game, but if the Packers O-line is at full strength then they should win that shootout with ease.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:31 PM
Well I am confused.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:31 PM
I agree with Mugatu on Rivers (and I am a long-time Chargers fan). Listened to the Jets game on radio, and even with the halftime lead, the Chargers seemed shaky.
Is Rivers suffering some sort of arm injury? He hasn’t been as sharp or accurate as in previous years.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:31 PM
1) YPA
2) Comp %
9) QB rating

October 25th, 2011 at 2:35 PM
Lions wins – Bucs, KC, Vikings, Cowboys, Bears
Lions losses – 49ers, Falcons
Bears wins – Falcons, Panthers, Vikings, Bucs
Bears losses – Saints, Packers, Lions
Apparently this thinking doesn’t apply to the Lions.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:35 PM
So the Saints went back from Playoff Contenders to Super Bowl Contenders based on blowing out the Colts?!
Oh, this was more than a blowout. A blowout is 42-7. 62-7 is the kind of butt-whuppin’ that people talk about to their grandkids about.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:36 PM
On a different note, this is kind of the problem with just saying the Packers defense isn’t that good and they aren’t as dominant as people think.
The Packers jumped out to a 14-0 lead in that game and Martz was forced to be pass happy to the point where Cutler had more passing yards than Rodgers at the end of the game (and Forte was rendered useless.) Tramon/Woodson/Shields have been battling injuries all year and will be fine post-bye week. I guess there is a risk that the Collins injury completely ruined that secondary, but I don’t buy it and see the Packers getting a lot better on the defensive side of the ball. Homer? Sure, but that secondary still has a ton of talent not playing at 100%.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:36 PM
TBL, You’re missing a handful of QBs, including some in the upper tiers (P. Manning, Ryan, etc.) Second, it’s actually not a horrible list, but with a couple of notable differences.
Below is my crack at a tiered list, with no ranking effort done inside the tier. The last tier is rookies (minus Newton) that could move relatively soon and the truly awful (Palmer, Moore, Whitehurst, etc.).
1st: Brady, Brees, Rodgers, P. Manning, Roethlisberger
2nd: Rivers, E. Manning, Schaub, Romo, Vick, Ryan, Newton, Stafford
3rd: Cutler, Freeman, Stafford, Cassel, Dalton, Fitzpatrick
4th: Sanchez, Flacco, Hasselbeck, Kolb, Smith
5th: Palmer, Moore, McCoy, Gabbert, Tebow, Beck, Ponder, Whitehurst/Jackson
October 25th, 2011 at 2:37 PM
Well that’s just a ‘good hustle’ for you, Lisk.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:37 PM
This is fucking scary. Privacy does not exist.
It never really did.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:38 PM
maybe I should just start coming up with names for all tiers
stick to your guns. screw these complaining assholes.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:38 PM
Oh they’re still shit and I would stab Jared Allen with that stupid fucking horn that gets blown after each 4 yard gain if given the chance but as a football team I think it’s fair to say they’re better than the like of Miami and Indy (already proved it against Zona) and could most likely hang with the Tennessees and Clevelands of the league
October 25th, 2011 at 2:38 PM
The gift that keeps giving! Especially considering QB rating is VERY much tied to YPA/Comp% (plus two apparently meaningless stats, TD% and INT%)

Below is my crack at a tiered list, with no ranking effort done inside the tier. The last tier is rookies (minus Newton) that could move relatively soon and the truly awful (Palmer, Moore, Whitehurst, etc.).
uh… what happens when neither of your starting QBs makes the list?

My favorite part of that article:
“At their post–Patriot Act peak, the FBI issued more than 50,000 such letters a year, nearly all with gag orders attached to them. The use of such letters dipped for a time after the Justice Department’s internal watchdog unveiled widespread abuses and sloppy procedures, but are on the rise again.”

I don’t really see a quality win on the Bears list, and the Lions beat the Bears, so what exactly are you bitching about?
October 25th, 2011 at 2:42 PM
Other than the Packers having a better football team than them last year I suppose this could be true
October 25th, 2011 at 2:42 PM
I put Beck in there. He’s in the lowest tier but could move based on more games. As for TBL’s list, he missed 8 or so teams altogether.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:44 PM
Doesn’t this just renew your faith in the Gov’t though?
Oh and whoever had Stafford in that 2nd tier of QB’s is high on crack.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:44 PM
Lisk said the Lions lost to two good teams at home but it’s not a big deal. Then he says the Bears need a quality win to push them up. They beat Atlanta, which Lisk says is a good team.
I’m not bitching about anything… I’m simply showing the flaws in dickface’s reasoning.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:44 PM
I’m with you. the Vikings suck pretty bad, but they are sucking in a proper way where they have at least won a game, but haven’t won enough to where they are screwing up a draft spot like the Browns, Seahawks and Titans are.
the Vikings are back!
October 25th, 2011 at 2:45 PM
Weren’t you the guy who just said Romo should be in the top tier?

Shitty play calling, inconsistent QB play, dumb/bs penalities and terrible punting can be fixed.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:47 PM
I put Beck in there. He’s in the lowest tier but could move based on more games.
my bad, but he’ll remain in the lowest tier.

What’s interesting to me on that google user data map is the fact we don’t have any inquiries on people in northern Africa (Libya, Egypt) or Saudi Arabia.

if any comment needed a /team grossman, it was that one.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:50 PM
Just absurd. I don’t care if you do tiers, lists, or anything else, but there’s nothing about Sanchez that puts him with those guys. Not even close. Again, absurd.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:50 PM
@Ben563982164508978643
is Tier #2 Stafford healthy and Tier #3 Stafford injured?
October 25th, 2011 at 2:54 PM
Subjective, bro. Ask a hundred different casual sports fans get a hundred different answers.
October 25th, 2011 at 2:55 PM
You are failing to value the impact Sanchez has on his team’s ability to play defense. Oh, and road fucking playoff wins….need I say more
October 25th, 2011 at 2:56 PM
I know we love lists and tiers and whatever. But after the Rodgers/Brady/Brees group, there’s really a whole bunch of guys who are capable of playing an amazing game, but aren’t consistent like those guys (Roethlisberger, Vick, Eli, etc). I think there’s at least 10 of those guys.
Then there’s a group of guys who can be your starting QB and your team can be successful, but they rarely play exceptionally and you’d rather have someone else. Sanchez is on that list.
October 25th, 2011 at 3:00 PM
I should be happy with the Cincinnati Bengals just not being terrible, but…I am very close to being disappointed if they aren’t at least in the playoff hunt with the last week or 2 left
October 25th, 2011 at 3:02 PM
I said either or. That means either switch Rivers and Romo or place Rivers in the 2nd tier. The last full season Romo had 9 INTs. This year there has been an uptick in his INTs because he hasn’t had his full allotment of healthy receivers. Now that he has them and as long as they stay healthy his turnovers should be down.
October 25th, 2011 at 3:11 PM
Well you didn’t say (write?) either, you said switch Rivers and Romo, putting him in the top tier instead of Rivers, which is absurd, since he is a TO machine.
But you are probably right, he will start improving now that he has his allotment full receivers around him, and not be the QB he has been for all but 1 season of his career.
October 25th, 2011 at 3:15 PM
Damn it to hell. Tier #2 Stafford is my fuck-up. Tier #3 Stafford is what I originally meant.

2009, he had a low INT total.
/Some might consider that year an outlier
October 25th, 2011 at 3:23 PM
In real life? In that case Rivers is a fraudtastic choke machine that can’t win the big game while Romo is the spectacular QB being held back by Norv.
They really are the same QB, one just gets watched and dissected by a national audience every week while the other plays bad teams while no one watches.

He averages 2/1 Tds to Ints pretty much his whole career. That is him as a QB. 9 interceptions is not really an oulier when he has years of 26/14 and 36/19. He has never thrown over 20 ints in a year.
October 25th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
YYSA: My original point to mugatu was in response to his saying too many turnovers for Vick while in the same thread propping Romo up as a possible top tier QB despite having a worse turnover rate.
I meant 2009 was an outlier in that it was the only season out of ~5 where he did not average over a turnover a game.
October 25th, 2011 at 3:35 PM
A blowout is 42-7. 62-7 is the kind of butt-whuppin’ that people talk about to their grandkids about
Yeah, but the Colts in that game were Favre lying down so Strahan could get the sack record. Aside from Delonte Carter, who demonstrated the hollowness of the N.O. defense on just a few carries, Indy stopped competing early in the first quarter.
What I’m saying is, don’t overrate the Saints because the other team quit.
October 25th, 2011 at 3:38 PM
Well Vicks last year is a complete outlier. Obviously he can still prove otherwise but sorry not going to buy that year as making MV7 a better QB.
Romo and Vick are very similar in that they both have a shit ton to prove before anyone thinks about placing them in any tier that involves the name of Brady. Oh and they are both probably too old to ever get there.
October 25th, 2011 at 3:42 PM
Completely agree
October 25th, 2011 at 3:48 PM
Turnovers have made his play look worse than it really is, and they’ve been especially wacky.
He’s been good this year. Not much different than last year. Really.
October 25th, 2011 at 3:49 PM
And I don’t think anyone says they’d rather have Vick as a QB than Brady. But he is a different QB now. He’s proving last year was not a fluke.
October 25th, 2011 at 3:57 PM
Of course no one says that. I agree he is proving last year as not a fluke but his last game of the season is this Sunday.
