Andrew Luck Sweepstakes: Miami and Indianapolis are Neck and Neck, with St. Louis* Still in the Mix
We’ve been looking at the Andrew Luck sweepstakes since last November, when it was clear that the Stanford QB was going to be a franchise player in the NFL. Luck passed on the draft in 2011, but when he comes out next April, he’ll certainly go first. This was my guess in May; I even wrote a post about it in the preseason. Who has the best shot of getting him? Through seven weeks – 9 to go! – here’s a breakdown of the contenders:
Indianapolis Colts (0-6) – Takeaway from the 62-7 drubbing: it’s clear this team has thrown in the towel on the season. Next up: at Tennessee (loss), vs. Atlanta (loss). Then, a “dangerous” spot – home vs. lowly Jacksonville. If Curtis Painter’s not careful, he could easily win this game. Could the Colts beat Cam Newton at home? If not, it’s looking like 1-win for Indy in 2011.
Miami Dolphins (0-6) – How thrilled was owner Stephen Ross that Tim Tebow intervened (he recovered the onside kick and the fumble in OT) and beat his Dolphins? Miami needs the No. 1 pick more than Indy – the Dolphins need a new coach, need to fill an always-empty stadium, and need to improve rapidly in a division with the Patriots, Bills and Jets. Problem is, the schedule is a little easier than Indy’s – I think Miami could win one or possibly two games in the November stretch at KC, vs, Washington and vs. Buffalo. More realistic NFL draft choice: Matt Barkley, QB, USC.
St. Louis Rams (0-6) - The tough schedule is to blame for the awful start – they’ve only scored single digits in three of the last four games – but the Rams should be able to pick up a few wins over scrubs like Arizona and Seattle (and maybe Cleveland and Cincinnati). More realistic NFL draft choice: Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State.
Fringe contenders: Like an NCAA tournament bubble team, these guys need help:
Jacksonville (1-5): Want to get in the mix? You can get it started tonight at home against Baltimore … by playing like Miami and Indianapolis! Indifferent. Uninspired. Play like a champion? Ha. Play like you’d rather be stuffing your face at the Cheesecake Factory. Let Baltimore run you out of your own (empty) building! Yes, I’m on the Ravens -10. More realistic NFL draft choice: Matt Kalil, OL, USC.
Arizona (1-5): Playing in the weakest division in football – Seattle, Arizona and St. Louis are a combined 3-15 – I could see Kevin Kolb winning a shootout or two and finishing with 3-4 wins. But damn, that defense has less teeth than the West Virginia freaks with Mountain Dew mouth. More realistic NFL draft choice: Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU.
Minnesota (1-6): Too frisky on offense to finish anywhere near the real dregs of the league. Of course, if Adrian Peterson goes down, the Vikings quickly become a contender. More realistic NFL draft choice: Jonathan Martin, OL, Stanford.
Faded: Forget about it
Kansas City (3-3): Through the first two weeks, the Chiefs looked like serious contenders. Three wins a row! Little or none of the wins have to do with QB Matt Cassel, though. He stinks.
* Would have to trade the Luck pick, since they couldn’t unload Bradford. Or, they could just keep him.

Even if the Vikings do get the 1st pick, I don’t see them taking Luck. They need an OL or DB first before QB. Ponder didn’t play amazingly, but he did show them that he could be pretty good down the road.
Indy is so bad everywhere, and Manning still has a few years, I think if they have the 1st pick, they trade it for more draft picks.
Miami is going to get Luck
October 24th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
TBL with the unintentional jab at Manning?
October 24th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
If Carson Palmer, who I think can reasonably be projected at no more than an average QB at the time of the trade, saddled with ~$13 million and ~$11 million the next two years, can be traded for 1 first round pick and maybe another first, second, or third, then Luck with his slave contract has to be worth at least 3 first rounders, right? Maybe more.
October 24th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
I’m getting kind of pissed that Manning gets to miss out on this year. They’re shitty without him, but they’d still be pretty shitty with him. People who think he couldve taken this team to the playoffs are high.
October 24th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
Picks and players. Trade it to a team who wants Luck for a ton of draft picks (after seeing what the Bengals got for Palmer I can imagine what a team would give up to get Luck) and a few good young players. If Manning is healthy he gets surronded with a bunch of really good players for the last 4-5 years of his career.
October 24th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
Really? Jax and Tenn aren’t very good, and Houston tends to shit their pants when given the chance. Remember, this team could have beaten both Pitt and TB without Manning.
October 24th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
I guess by frisky on offense you mean they have one decent player, and if he goes down, they are no longer frisky, right?
granted I didn’t see the game yesterday, but putting up points against an average at best defensive team at home doesn’t fill this fan with boatloads of confidence. they may win 3 games this year.
October 24th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
He could stare at the Texans and make them wilt. To say they wouldn’t be competing in that division is wrong. Your homer statement will not stand.
October 24th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
Is he any good? Or is he the Joey Harrington (or Alex Smith) “we need a QB let’s take the best one regardless of whether we think he’ll be good” consolation prize?
October 24th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
This isn’t the Matt Cassel Patriots going 11-5. Because the Colts are led by an invalid with a headset, the difference between Manning and anyone else under center is enormous.
October 24th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
There are actually 10 weeks left in the season because of the bye. Unless you were referring to everyone taking off Week 17 due to the NFL-style playoff. If so, then carry on.
October 24th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
Matt Barkley, QB, USC = Carson Palmer 2.0
October 24th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
The Colts have been very competitive in all their games except for last night and Week 1. Who knows what their offensive output wouldve been with Manning in place of Painter & Collins, I’m sure it wouldve improved by 10 points or so…
October 24th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
People who think he couldve taken this team to the playoffs are high.
thats just stupid.
October 24th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
It was nice of all those Viking fans to sell their tickets to the game yesterday, sounded like a bowl game in there with a 50/50 split
Still seems like a waste of time to speculate about Luck to the Colts without knowing Manning’s long-term prognosis
October 24th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
I think he’ll be decent to above average. I will mock the team that drafts Landry Jones, though.
October 24th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
How thrilled was owner Stephen Ross that Tim Tebow intervened (he recovered the onside kick and the fumble in OT) and beat his Dolphins?
On a scale of 0 – very, I would say very. He’s doing all he can to land Luck. You think Sparano’s that dumb to go for the ill-advised 2 point conversion? The instructions clearly came from above.
October 24th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
So he’ll be really, really good?
October 24th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
Barkley is a big kid who plays in a pro set. I think he’ll be Matt Ryan-esque. Good enough to win, but you’ll need a stout running game or a great defense.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
I think this is pretty spot-on.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
Regardless of the owner, considering I’ve seen the Dolphins play, yes, I do.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
Just what I want out of the 2nd overall pick in a draft.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
Stephen Ross should die of gonorrhea and rot in hell for having a Gator Day in that stadium.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
* Would have to trade the Luck pick, since they couldn’t unload Bradford. Or, they could just keep him.
They’d trade the pick. The thought of dealing Bradford is ludicrous.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
He is the 5th best QB in the Pac-12.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:02 PM
Only if you’re talking current Carson Palmer, not the Palmer who was really good before the Steelers ruined his career
October 24th, 2011 at 12:02 PM
Stephen Ross should die of gonorrhea and rot in hell for having a Gator Day in that stadium.
Yeah I still don’t get that. True Dolphin fans should be really pissed right now.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:03 PM
For the video gamers out here….wow.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:03 PM
Only if you’re talking current Carson Palmer, not the Palmer who was really good before the Steelers ruined his career
Current Palmer. I honestly think that there are probably 5 other QB’s out there just as good as Barkley, but unfortunately don’t play for USC and so they are not getting as much recognition.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:03 PM
The PAC-12 may not do a lot of things right, but they got some guys who can sling it.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
Saw the MSU-Wisconsin ending just now. Terrible. The B1G’s national title dreams are drowned by a Hail Mary. What an unfortunate ending for the conference.

Saw the MSU-Wisconsin ending just now. Terrible. The B1G’s national title dreams are drowned by a Hail Mary. What an unfortunate ending for the conference.
This keeps up, and we might see an Alabama-LSU national title game because they honestly are still the 2 best teams in the country.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
fixed for accuracy.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
Say what now? Don’t tell me the dude from ASU is above him, because as far as the NFL goes, that’s retarded. Other than Luck there isn’t another QB in the Pac 12 who the NFL will love more than Barkley.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
So what. OSU’s B1G ten title hopes were revived. Whisky gon get served.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
I’d have no problem with this should Bama win on Nov 5. Would like to see them on a neutral field.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
Wow indeed. However Batman already got my money and it will probably take me two years to beat it.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
You’re right, it shouldve ended with a buttkicking at the hands of the SEC champ.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
If Clemson wins out, no way there’ll be a rematch of LSU-Bama. They’ve played a very legit schedule.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
The B1G’s national title dreams were drowned by horrible non-conference scheduling and less than mediocre conference talent.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
Not.Gonna.Happen
Dude will have 35+ starts under his belt should he leave after this year (compared to less than half of that for the Mexigod) and he’s pretty accurate, something Sanchez has never been.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
I wanted to tell you that you’re crazy… but Wisconsin giving up 31 points and then a prayer for 6 more to Michigan State and Kirk Cousins is deplorable.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
Nick Foles. He won’t go as high as Barkley but he’s probably better.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
I’m crazy enough to think that Stanford is solid enough on both sides of the ball to give either of them a good game.
Good game = not getting blown out
Seriously though, what Bama and LSU are doing to teams in the second half is incredible.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
True Dolphin fans, to the extent they exist, shouldn’t be pissed the owner has to resort to gimmicks to make money when they don’t buy tickets or show up to games.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:09 PM
I know, dude. Fucking game makers…they put out the only three games I want in back-to-back-to-back weeks. Mother fuckers.

October 24th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
All of this. They are the one team that I think can hang with LSU or Bama due to their OL and having Luck. I’m skeptical of them defensively in dealing with Richardson, but their OL is legit and Luck is who he is.

I’m interested to see if Big XII can get someone through conference play undefeated. The favorite (Oklahoma) fell, but they still have a couple, right?
For a conference rumored to not exist in a couple years, they pretty solidly have the second best top-end teams in the country, and probably the deepest top 5, right? Pretty sure they’ve had 4-5 teams hit the top 10 at some point.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:12 PM
If you though Wisky was going to go undefeated, well you must not watch Wisconsin play football. Hasn’t happened since 1912, wasn’t going to happen this year. Throw in their pitiful non-conf and I wouldn’t have supported their bid to the title game.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:12 PM

So what. OSU’s B1G ten title hopes were revived. Whisky gon get served.
I think he got in, but to call those replays irrefutable evidence is a stretch. The one camera on the goal line had Michael J. Fox operating it, it was shaking so bad you could barely watch, and the only one with a steady view was from an angle. If he was ruled down at the 1 yard line, not sure how you overturn that. Whatever, the Badgers played like shit most of the game. Sparty out played them.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:12 PM
On Sat. night we left the PSU/NW game and headed down to Wrigleyville to watch the end of the other games. A few guys in our group decked out in full PSU gear saw the game was headed to overtime so they ducked into the Wisky bar (by the way, it’s awesome that stretch just puts out flags so you know what you’re getting into) to watch just as the play unfolded.
They quickly left.

October 24th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
Pre-ordered MW3 this morning. After spending precious work time reviewing all these games, I think for my style of gaming (random here and there moments, very casual) COD is the game I would enjoy the most. I am comfortable with the play-style and enjoy playing it online with my friends. If Netflix starts allowing video games to be part of the mailing package I will check out other games, but for now it is not worth it for me to buy anything else.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
Not sure why. Most people said that PSU could start off like gang busters due to their pitiful conference slate. PSU has beaten Indiana, Iowa, Purdue and Northwestern. Not all that impressive. They still have Wisconsin, Nebraska and Ohio State, including both Wisky and Ohio State on the road.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
He was in – they drew lines/angles all over everything.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
You’ve done more work than every writer I’m reading. PSU still not even mentioned as a B1G title contender despite CURRENTLY BEING FIRST.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
Mostly because it was pretty obvious he got the ball across the line.

October 24th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
Can be said about almost every team ranked between 10 and 20. Neb is eminently beatable at home, OSU is bad. Hell if Wisky trips up again they might not even have to beat them.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
I’m not sold on this thought, but I’m beginning to wonder if the LSU/Alabama winner is this year’s 2003 Miami or 2006 USC. Unbeatable. In the mix with the greatest seasons in recent NCAA memory. Until they lose to the team everybody wrote off.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
Good enough to win, but you’ll need a stout running game or a great defense.
I think this is pretty spot-on.
for many many QBs
October 24th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
For as bad as PSU is on offense to be in 1st place by themselves at this point of the season is a shocker to even the biggest PSU homers. All of a sudden, the ILL, NEB and OSU games all look winnable as those teams are just as flawed as PSU.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:16 PM
Redmond’s?
October 24th, 2011 at 12:16 PM
I’ve used this theory on Clemson since they beat Auburn and I’ve been wrong every time.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:16 PM
Seems I did. But I stand by my point that you are wrong.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:16 PM

October 24th, 2011 at 12:18 PM
Mostly because it was pretty obvious he got the ball across the line.
MSU had a pretty blatant/obvious false start a play or two before the pass too….
Brett Bielema calling a timeout when MSU had 2nd and 21 and seemed content to start running the clock out and play for overtime was a head scratcher. His flaws as a head coach always seem to come out in East Lansing.

October 24th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
What would happen in this scenario? I threw this around with some friends:
1. Alabama beats LSU
2. Both win out the rest of the way
3. OSU and Clemson lose
4. Oregon wins out and beats Stanford
5. Oregon gets into the NC game over an LSU team that kicked its ass
6. Oregon beats Alabama by a field goal
7. LSU beats the shit out of Boise in the Sugar Bowl
Question: can the AP or anyone else still crown another champion?
October 24th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
I’ll be in favor of that only if they simultaneously increase penalties for extra benefits. For instance, a school on probation who violates rules, by definition of ‘probation’ should have a harsher penalty than ‘more probation’.

I’m not 100% sure what he’s referring to there. But when the story refers to ‘grants’, I’m assuming it means either the student’s stipend for living off campus or he means increasing the allowance for the amount of grants a student can receive from a university without it counting towards the team’s scholarships limit.
It’s not a very well written story, so I’m not sure which it is or if it’s something else entirely.

October 24th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
I said they’d win and yes, I was wrong. If Penn State beats Wisconsin in Madison, I’ll eat my hat.
Wisconsin losing definitely lowers them in my standing. It doesn’t raise my standing of MSU though. Still think they’re average and that their head coach needs to get his team under control.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
Ahh, missed the last part of your comment Jay. Yes I could definitely see that happening to them this year. But they would have to play a considerable underdog.

Russell Wilson looked very human the first 3.5 quarters of that game. The game really changed when Ball went out with that pseudo-concussion. He was the a huge part of the reason they jumped out to a 14-0 lead.

I bet the Wisky bar you went to was Redmond’s though. It’s on the south end of the Wrigleyville strip. Not that far from Barleycorn. I don’t think I’ve ever been in Barleycorn during the day. That place is a meat market after 10 pm though, especially upstairs. My Hawkeye bar of choice is Merkle’s.

Helmets were fine. The unis were gross.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
Wow. Sparty has a sick defense, especially up front. Saying otherwise is just retarded.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
The thing about all these SEC BCS champions is that there has never been a case where the team that won was a head and shoulders favorite over their opponent. Most of them were actually underdogs who had their credentials questioned by half the country.
This year is the first one where everybody just assumes that LSU or Alabama wins it. And “everybody” always seems to be wrong on these things.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
Eh… I’m not for the NCAA, at all, but I’m certainly not for ‘paying’ the players outright. That seems to cross a line, IMO. In the end, I don’t really care that much about the conversation, because I’m so turned off to college football anyway… mostly I was just passing it along.

Lindsay Lohan does not appreictae this analogy.

Russell Wilson looked like he always does against good defenses. He will make plays to keep both teams alive. I doubt any Wisconsin fans had actually seen him play at NCST, but that’s his M.O. Nebraska couldn’t get near him in their game, so you never saw him pressured. I bet Penn State puts a good bit of pressure on him to close out the season.

Awesome… it’s like 50% comments by people who don’t get the joke, and 50% comments that are just playing along.

Penalties: Wisco 6 for 40 yards, MichSt 0 for 0.
D’Antonio is finally imparting some of that tOSU class & character onto his players.

michigan state fumbling the ball deep in their territory on their first play played an even bigger part.

Bama was a pretty solid favorite over Texas I believe.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
Still think they’re average and that their head coach needs to get his team under control.

Honestly…how many Wisconsin fans were watching terrible NCST games the past three seasons.

GTA can get a bit overwhelming but the open world of Red Dead Redemption might have been one of the most enjoyable experience I’ve had playing a video game this side of the N64.

Vice City was my favorite GTA game. The open world stuff just blew my mind when I first played GTAIII.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
On a non B1G/SEC note, Texas Tech looks like they’ve actually built up a defense under Tuberville. That was an impressive win over OU late Saturday night.

Gave up three 70+ yard TD drives and two more 40+ yarders.

Under Leach and Ruffin McNeil, those would have been 5 and 3.
/provides no proof whatsoever.

Nothing can beat that. Here I provide you cap relief.

Devang, that outkube site…it’s a thing of beauty. I’ve never seen life imitate art so quickly and thoroughly.

GTA can get a bit overwhelming but the open world
Halfway through a mission I’d get distracted and start motoring down pedestrians and shooting police officers.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
what does open world mean?
October 24th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
Say what now?
October 24th, 2011 at 12:46 PM
The game isn’t linear, i.e. you can do your own thing and explore the entire game without having to achieve a certain goal in a specific timeframe. Say you need to kill X character. Well, in a usual game, you have to advance in a certain way under certain constraints. In the open world setting, you can do all sorts of other things before dealing with your main objective.

Question: can the AP or anyone else still crown another champion?
AP can crown whoever they want, they’re not part of the BCS (see USC, 2003).

HA! I’ll have to take a pass on that one..

And I’ve been reading that outkube link that devang posted…I think it awakened my inner troll.
But still, an impressive win for Tech.

thanks husker
October 24th, 2011 at 12:50 PM
And I’ll reiterate: if a 1-loss Oregon gets into the NC game over a 1-loss LSU, the BCS needs to be taken out, lined up against a wall, and skullfucked until its brains spurt out.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:50 PM
Thanks for Outkube it is outstanding!
This is was a thread in order:

Well how else would you get Dwight? I only included Meta World how stupid that name looked.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:52 PM
Who is saying this will happen? Whichever idiot built this straw man up needs to be kicked in the nuts AFTER the people who are complaining about get the same treatment.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:53 PM
It won’t happen. LSU whooped Oregon and Oregon is a highly overrated 6-1 team. I am confident Stanford will knock them down
