There always seems to be two different arguments being mixed here. Do falling ratings have a negative economic impact on baseball and do falling ratings mean decline in popularity of the sport.
On the first, while it obviously doesn’t help, the relatve % of revenues of national broadcast rights is such that no, it probably isn’t as big an issue as many would like to think.
On the second, it may or may not be a true reflection, but just the ratings numbers themselves aren’t definitive either way. Continuing to bring them up as some sort of proof positive is faulty logic to me.

The advertisers who are putting their ads on TV are using pre-negotiated rates. They are not negotiated after the commercial airs and the ratings are determined. Additionally, ratings do not cover everything. MLB gets online viewership. There are ads on their website that get a cost-per-mille rate. It has nothing to do with click, just pageviews. Much like this very blog. They also get advertising space on the online broadcast during breaks in the action.

I thought I read something like some episode of All in the Family back in the 70s got a better rating than anything that has been on TV in the past decade. And it was a repeat.

Exactly. That’s why it’s stupid to use NBA Finals ratings as your main point as to why the NBA is ahead of the MLB (whatever the hell that means).

But is there a difference between them paying for ads to a single event with lots of eyeballs (Oscars, Super Bowl) or to multiple events with less eyeballs but a committed following (World Series, NBA Finals)?

advertisers pay a lot for coverage during the masters, but that’s kind of a one off.

i should be done the conference by 3 or 4 wednesday. probably time to squeeze in 9?

oh yea…we’d probably have three hours if we teed off at 4. probably squeeze in 18 if we teed off at 330ish.

lemme know where your conf is and i’ll figure out the closest course and shit.
