Bryant Gumbel: David Stern Wants to Be Seen as a Plantation Owner
All, Media Gossip/Musings, NBA, Race, Rich Old White People, Video October 19th. 2011, 4:00pm
You go, Bryant. Go on with your bad self. That’s a great rant. I’ve got nothing to add except that David Stern’s ruining the NBA. Why did this jackass of a commish wait until now to get a mediator involved? Everyone saw this lockout coming years ago. And yes, Gumbel has a history of making these types of remarks (see here and here), but in this instance, I think he’s on point. [vid via HBO]

As a white guy I feel weird comparing anything to slavery.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:06 PM
I’m going to find the marketing book that I had to read back in college and send it to you TBL. There’s a whole chapter about Stern on how he made the NBA what it is today and why it’s thriving because of his contributions. It’s a good read.
That said… A slave is a slave. A basketball player is a basketball player. Let’s stop trying to make the two analogous.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:06 PM
frankly, mr. commissioner, i don’t give a damn
October 19th, 2011 at 4:06 PM
Gumbel calls Stern a slave owner. Nothing will happen.
Susan Sarandon calls the Pope a Nazi. Nothing will happen.
But Hank Jr. says the word “Hitler.” YOU’RE FIRED.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:09 PM
David Stern’s ruining the NBA
He is employed by the owners, that is where is loyalties lie. I feel your blame is misguided.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:11 PM
I rarely agree with Screamin A Smith but today on SVP’s show, he gave a solid, thoughtful rebuttal to Gumbel’s claims. I think David Stern is a smarmy, cocky douchebag but to make the claim Gumbel has made is ridiculous.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:11 PM
Sick and tired of the double-standard. Not to mention, let’s take Gumbel at his word – every person with ties to slavery, every idiot who has ever demanded reparations, should be pissed off at Gumbel.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:14 PM
It’s funny when some white blogger applauds someone making the slavery analogy with respect to a business which has made several average at best black players multi-millionaires.
Outside of professional sports, and mostly outside of the NBA, there’s no industry which rewards mere adequacy as luxuriously as the NBA.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:14 PM
Stern is a businessman doing business things.
What Stern is doing happens EVERY DAY in corporate America.
Except most of the rank and file in corporate America don’t get 57% of their companies’ revenues tied up in salaries.
I look forward to the interview Gumbel conducts with Stern where he totally back pedals from this stance.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:14 PM
As a white guy I feel weird comparing anything to slavery.
As a baseball tradionalist, I feel guilty for being white.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:15 PM
But Hank Jr. says the word “Hitler.” YOU’RE FIRED.
Yay capitalism!
October 19th, 2011 at 4:15 PM
As a white guy I feel weird comparing anything to slavery.
if you want to be an enlightened white guy, you need to start poking around in the shadows, and finding some racism for yourself. Then show it to everybody to prove how un-racist you are.
Don’t fear racism, embrace racism as a way to prove that you aren’t a racist.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:15 PM
Bryant Gumbel is a smart man.
Why would he make this analogy?
October 19th, 2011 at 4:16 PM
So it makes sense that Stern takes over the NFL Combine right?
October 19th, 2011 at 4:17 PM
including stern…which is why he reached out to billy hunter in 2009.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:18 PM
but in this instance, I think he’s on point.
especially when Kevin Garnett caused a scene last week inside the “house” and has now been relegated back out to the “field.”
October 19th, 2011 at 4:18 PM
Bryant Gumbel is a smart man.
Why would he make this analogy?
for the ratings!!
/tbl
October 19th, 2011 at 4:19 PM
Let me preface this by saying I am in NO WAY saying slavery was a good thing or that it was ok, or that it’s ever right to bring that up, because I can already see how this could be taken, but…
Hank Williams Jr. compared the President of the United States to Hitler, a man who ruthlessly killed people just because they weren’t like him. Slave owners forced blacks to work for them against their will. Both are evil, yes, but David Stern is not the President of the United States.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:20 PM
It’s funny when some white blogger applauds someone making the slavery analogy with respect to a business which has made several average at best black players multi-millionaires.
this particular blogger is some not so clearly defined color of brown.
Usually, though, he passes the racism stuff of to his lily white prince. But he just married a (I assume) Nubian princess.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:21 PM
I do think Gumbel should at least be suspended or something, not just get of with nothing happening to him.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:21 PM
NBA average Salary is just over 5 million dollars. If Stern was really a ‘Plantation owner’ his business would be flourishing.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:22 PM
Let me preface this by saying I am in NO WAY saying slavery was a good thing or that it was ok,
so, to clarify, you wish you had a slave, and you wish that slave was a black person?
October 19th, 2011 at 4:23 PM
No, I prefer my slaves to be from Central America where they have really good drug connections.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:23 PM
I do think Gumbel should at least be suspended or something, not just get of with nothing happening to him.
this isn’t a guy who shills his music to a network for a football pregame. This is a long established news/sports/opinion guy giving a parting shot at the end of his sports/opinion hour.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:23 PM
Actually, if we’re getting literal here, Hank Williams compared one enemy to another. Obama could have been Hitler or Netanyahu. He in no way intended either literally or figuratively to directly compare the President to mass murderers. It doesn’t excuse the fact that it was a dumb analogy or that Hank Williams is an idiot…but the country freaked the freak out and I think it has much less to do with the comparison Williams made and much more to do with who Williams is. Same applies, in the reverse, to this Gumbel issue.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:23 PM
If you want to ferret RittyRich out of the weeds, bring up a situation where the reputation of the white man is besmirched. I’m shocked he’s from Alabama. Shocked, I tell you!
October 19th, 2011 at 4:24 PM
not sure where you’re going with that.
gumbel/HBO aren’t partners with the NBA…there’s no profit to lose or gain. it was uttered in a relative vacuum. hank said political shit that will have a large population of MNF’s viewers offended, and espn didn’t want to be associated with that so they didn’t lose potential viewers thereby costing them money.
not saying it’s right or wrong, but espn was just protecting their business interests while gumble and HBO had no interests to protect.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:24 PM
Well certainly wouldn’t want a weak jewish person.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:24 PM
I don’t think accurately understand his job. He works for the owners, and everything he is doing and has done has been to break the union’s will to get a deal that will benefit the owners profit margins. Its not his job to end the lockout as quickly as possible.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:25 PM
Even an “average” NBA player is still among the top 0.00001% of basketballers in the entire world, so I think you’re a little misguided.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:26 PM
Susan Sarandon calls the Pope a Nazi. Nothing will happen.
Well, it’s not as though she’s a spokesperson or otherwise employed or bound to the Catholic Church. And the Pope was a member of the Hitler Youth (against his will) when he was a child. She can say she should have picked her words much more carefully, but otherwise, what should happen there? I’m unclear.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:26 PM
Yeah, that’s a good point. I’m actually surprised he didn’t make a comparison like the Hatfields playing golf with the McCoys.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:26 PM
not saying it’s right or wrong, but espn was just protecting their business interests while gumble and HBO had no interests to protect.
Which is capitalism right? ESPN was being capitalistic in this decision right?
October 19th, 2011 at 4:27 PM
Why is there a Tiger in my back yard?
October 19th, 2011 at 4:27 PM
Actually, I’m not from Alabama. I don’t give a shit about Hank Williams reputation. I hate double-standards, oft employed in racial situations.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:27 PM
really? you mean, tim finchem trying to get Q-school grads to go to the nationwide tour instead of the PGA so that PGA vets that would normally be left out can keep their paychecks?
the existence of the champions tour fits this bill too. imagine a senior NFL or senior NBA…blech.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:27 PM
Well that’s just stupid. Hank Jr said the word Hitler in reference to the POTUS, kinda surprised you left that out. Also what could happen to Susan Sarandon? Can she be fired? Is she currently employed?
October 19th, 2011 at 4:27 PM
heard your back yard was crawling with trim.

Exactly the effect he was going for. Plus he’d still be singing on Monday nights.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:28 PM
since when is the POTUS above criticism? shit…that hitler reference was kind compared to some of the shit tea partiers say.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:28 PM
Did we have a racial draft I missed?
October 19th, 2011 at 4:28 PM
that’s the way i see it, i guess.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:28 PM
Even an “average” NBA player is still among the top 0.00001% of basketballers in the entire world, so I think you’re a little misguided.
What percentage of world basketball players was Greg Ostertag better than?
October 19th, 2011 at 4:29 PM
Unless its Goldman Sachs circa 2009.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:29 PM
He’s looking for skanks?
October 19th, 2011 at 4:29 PM
Or maybe i just cried Wolf??
/you all saw what i did there.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:29 PM
Doesn’t he actually work for the league as a whole, not just the owners or just the players? So yes, he should want to end the lockout as quickly as possible to get his league back bringing in money. Right?
October 19th, 2011 at 4:29 PM
But Bryant Gumbel did sound like Malcolm X there. Without the support of Wayne Brady.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:30 PM
Her daughter must continue to get naked on TV.
!
October 19th, 2011 at 4:30 PM
Well shit…we should go back and keep a tally of the HItler, etc. references to W. Bush and start mailing out pink slips right now.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:30 PM
Link to industries that reward mediocrity as luxuriously then?
What? No link? Thought so.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:31 PM
W references were more geared towards his sheer incompetency than being evil.
now cheney? i bet he spikes toddlers.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:32 PM
the fox network. cbs. hollywood.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:32 PM
I think Gumbel took a roundabout and inflamatory route to make a point that he thinks Stern should be thinking about the long-term health of the league rather than the owners’ position. I feel like Gumbel understands who works for who, but he wanted a reaction. I know you weren’t specifically referring to Gumbel in your comment.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:32 PM
Well shit…we should go back and keep a tally of the HItler, etc. references to W. Bush and start mailing out pink slips right now.
I think most of the people who equated W to Hitler don’t have jobs to begin with.

October 19th, 2011 at 4:32 PM
The Goldman analogy fits perfectly, actually.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:33 PM
In a Wayne Brady/Hootie sorta way.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:33 PM
anyways, W can’t be hitler…hitler’s constituents LOVED him.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:34 PM
he’s not above criticism, but people aren’t above being fired for saying stupid things. Besides, the president of the US is more important than David Stern and even the Pope to the majority of the world. Also, Hitler’s way worse than a run of the mill nazi or slave owner.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:34 PM
Is TBL gonna have to choke a bitch?
October 19th, 2011 at 4:34 PM
“Plantation mentaility” is such a tired, lazy statement. Corporate dynamics, media rights and advertising/customer growth combined with a global workforce are the drivers here.
If you are still harping on comparing people who labored to produce rice and cotton to the modern NBA you have been left very far behind. It’s 21st century business and you have Billy Hunter vs. 30 men who are worth trillions of dollars behind with a iconic product.
The misguided NBA players are going to lose spectacularly unless they can create an alternate outlet for their services of equal payement.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:34 PM

I remember when the buildup to the Iraq war began and the protests started. I used to love watching C-Span, Fox, CNN coverage of the lunatics on parade. But I was at the mercy of what they wanted to show. Now, youtube, sweet youtube, I can just search occupy Wall St. and spend hours watching complete f’ing morons piss their pants for reasons they cannot even fathom comprehending. Thank you, youtube. Also, anybody else been surprised by the outright communists you’re facebook friends with? I’ve got like 2 straight pinkos I went to high school with. Had no idea.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:36 PM
there are 1 billion catholics so…the pope’s probably above the pres.
but regardless…why isn’t michelle bachmann “fired” for some of the shit she’s said about the pres? or perry? or palin?
that’s way worse than what hank said…these people’s opinions MATTER.

October 19th, 2011 at 4:36 PM
anyways, W can’t be hitler…hitler’s constituents LOVED him.
Never more than 32% of German voters supported the Nazi Party. And none got to vote for Hitler personally to be head of the Nazi Party or to be Fuhrer.
But he was pretty popular when Germany was winning. I think they stopped gauging public opinion in the Third Reich around 1942 though.

I find the fascists more surprising.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:38 PM

there’s a lesson here…if you want to be known as a great leader, make sure your country is rich during your reign.

Quite true. But you know what’s interesting? Hitler was in power for 12 years. In that period of time, there were at least 30 different attempts on his life. Some of them half-baked, and some of them Hitler was extremely luck to get away from.
October 19th, 2011 at 4:43 PM
I think the Pope could get an army to rise up out of these places. Latins love their Catholicism.

If a popular media member or actor, businessperson went off on the Pope, that person would also be fired ala Hank Williams Jr.
While there are a lot of people that like to take pot shots at the Roman Catholic faith, there are probably 30-40 million Americans who attend mass every week, with a toal of 70 million roman catholics in the USA.

Stern has been presented in this manner in the media throughout the years, and he has embraced it.
