Jon Lester Cops to Having a Rally Beer and Ordering Popeye’s, Baseball Community Shrugs Shoulders (Again)
The beer and fried chicken story lives! Jon Lester, one of the players ripped by management in the Globe story last week, spoke to Peter Abraham:
“It was a ninth-inning rally beer,” he said. “We probably ordered chicken from Popeye’s like once a month. That happened. But that’s not the reason we lost.
“Most of the times it was one beer, a beer. It was like having a Coke in terms of how it affected you mentally or physically. I know how it looks to people and it probably looks bad. But we weren’t up there just drinking and eating and nobody played video games. We watched the game.”
When you need a rally brew, what’s the call? Corona? PBR? Or do you rally with high-end suds, like Rolling Rock? In honor of Lester, I plan on eating Popeye’s tonight while watching the Jets choke against the winless Dolphins.

Or do you rally with high-end suds, like Rolling Rock?
I don’t want to live in a world where Rolling Rock is considered high-end. Someone needs to sign TBL up for a Beer of the Month club.
October 17th, 2011 at 1:51 PM
My goto high-end brew is the champagne of beers: Miller High Life.
October 17th, 2011 at 1:52 PM
Obvious troll is obvious. TBL is obviously desperate for a 300 comment thread about beer preferences.
October 17th, 2011 at 1:52 PM
The fuck?
Rolling Rock is the drink of Frank the Tank…not your Dogfish IPAs.
October 17th, 2011 at 1:56 PM

I just looked it up — in a local Pittsburgh beer store a case of 12oz RR cans is 13.99

I’ll let Jonah Keri handle this:
October 17th, 2011 at 1:57 PM
Rolling Rock > DFH 90 minute, right TBL?

Rippin Chicken, some cajun fries, and sweet tea is quite the meal. Now if only they had something like the KFC bowl.

way to sneak that reverse jinx in there, but it only counts in a full on paranoid jets fan post, not one about the red sox.

I fully support the concept of Rally Beer. I suggest Mephistopheles, with its 15% ABV.

Popeye’s — so, so delicious. Yet comes in second to Church’s.
Either way, both have better wings than you’ll find on Sanchize, who’ll find some way to keep the Fins in this game.
October 17th, 2011 at 2:07 PM
that’s some good stuff.
also recommend flying dog’s Dogtoberfest and Magic Hat’s brew. those are my two favorites this year.

Yeah, in my local liquor store, retails for 11.99 for 18/bottles. This is like Peter King calling Shock Top a “craft beer”

In college I really wanted to OSU off campus United Dairy Famers to coin my purchase “The White Trash Special” it consisted of:
1 24 oz Bud Can featuring Dale Jr.
6 Pack of High Life Pounders
1 Can of Grizzly Mint
It was under $10 and got the night going every time.

I’ve haven’t learned much in my life, but I have learned that pumpkin does not belong in beer.

I’ve always been told that baseball clubhouses are the most juvenile of hangouts. Why are people shocked by this? As if this dude drinking a beer cost the team one out, let alone one game.
October 17th, 2011 at 2:12 PM
Flying Dog is really good, and Magic Hat is excellent except for their terrible summer seasonal which they mix with beet juice. That’s just terrible
Sarnac Pumpkin Ale and Flying Fish Octcoberfish are my faves this year.

Way back in 19 and 93 when I was a freshman, Myers Liquor sold Meister Brau for about $6 a case. Meister Brau makes one shit green for some reason.

why that isn’t an actual name of beer I’ll never know.
I’ll split the trademark with you.
all we have to do is add some chili poweder and cinnamon to coors light and we’ve got our beer.

My buddy and I were talking about the best supercheap beers. We put PBR, Lionshead, and Straub at the top.
October 17th, 2011 at 2:18 PM
Thanks, Cowherd. No, I actually ate a lot of fried chicken (Wayside catered two events I went to – if you ever go to C’ville, go eat at Wayside). Also, I drank a ton of Bud Light at the young alumni rager that occurred after the game.
But we Wahoos can’t help the fact that we’re pretty classy.
It was red. Delirium Nocturnum is probably my favorite beer in the world but Tremens would likely make my top 5.

It is not that Rolling Rock is bad, just not high end. Details.
My favorite cheap beers are Olympia, Old Milwaukee and Hamm’s. Dem’s good fishing and tailgaiting beers.

husker, i have been in faar more pro baseball clubhouses than pro football or hockey, but my impression is that yes, bseball is more fratboy. hockey and football players are about to risk their life/career or just got done doing that, so i think it lends a more serious tone

October 17th, 2011 at 2:23 PM
what’s “Cheap”? under $6 for a sixer of cans? under $5?
We did not have a certain price range per se, it was more of the reputation about the beer itself. It started bc I said how I was at a bar and got some pizza and ordered a $2 PBR draft and it tasted great. Maybe it was because I was drinking a $2 beer at a decent bar or maybe it was because it was actually good. The moral of the story is — What are good, inexpensive beers.

October 17th, 2011 at 2:25 PM
I ordered a drink at the Ketel One Club at the UC last Thursday night during the 2nd intermission of the Blackhawks game.
$13.50 for a Beam and diet Coke. Appalled. I will stick to the $7.50 Bud Lights even if they give me a terrible hangover. I could get a 2 liter of Coke and a fifth of Evan Williams for $13.50.
October 17th, 2011 at 2:26 PM

i agree with this. it’s hard for me to not commpute a tip based on the effort expended rather thaan the cost of the goods. hey, the waiter/waitress/bartender didn;t buy the product, only listened to you and brought it to you.
like tipping at the coffeehouse. sure, if you are picky about foam and shit, it’s worth it to you. if you are a man and drink black coffee, you keep that buck

October 17th, 2011 at 2:30 PM
I like alot of Southern Tier beers. Pumking is not one of them. Course, I’m not big on pumpkin beers, but love winter beers. Both are usually spiced. Odd.

October 17th, 2011 at 2:31 PM
Yes sir. The bar I go to for trivia nights really overprices their beer for being a bar(cheapest is $3.50, which is crazy for where I live, there usually has to be some kind of special for $2). But that doesnt mean I’m leaving less than 20%.

I for one also can’t stand winter ale’s. aren’t the usually pretty heavy in the spices like ginger and the like?

Shit, it was a good night when I could buy an $11.99 case of coors light. I used to love when my roommate would go home and use her mom’s Costco card to buy a gallon of Captain.

Sorry you didn’t like it…it’s a great day when they first tap it in late October

I can respect that. But let’s not compare it to actual beer.

cj, there’s a cat called a maine lynx. cats are feminine creatures (except for the males). you’re a female, and have some love for maine. once in awhile i put these together

I don’t often drink beer, but when I do, I choose Dos Equis.
Stay thirsty my friends.

Winter Ales often have a very strong flavor and alcohol content. It’s also not unusual for them to be darker in appearance. But heavy fruitiness or spiciness is not confined to just Winter Ales. Ales, by definition, are usually full of very pronounced fruit and spice notes.

Never heard of it. Are you thinking of the Maine Coon Cat?

Jim and Jack are not really the same thing though. That’s sort of like saying that I hate Pepsi and will only drink Kool Aid if there is no Coke.
take your snootiness down the street ms. i know one is bourbon and one is sour mash. my point is, the only time i turn down bourbon is when it’s beam, on a plane. since i still need some warm vice, i am happpy that jd is an option

It’s not being snooty. It’s being correct. Jack and Jim are not the same thing. They are not even in the same flavor profile. Sorry if my pointing that out bothers you.

There isn’t a Maine lynx, it’s a Canada lynx but it does have a habitat in northern Maine.

Thirsty Dog’s Christmas brew is better than Great Lakes, I’ve determined.

God fucking dammit I was late for this thread. I wanted to out snob every beer snob here.
I predict Guinness’ Black Lager to be terrible.

I think I’m with you on this. When you see a commercial and your first thought is “I don’t think I’d want 6 of those because I have a feeling I’d hate it after 1″, then that’s not very auspicious.

Had to look that up. Mini golf. Sweet.

ms. here is simplicity:
i love bourbon. except beam. no sure why, just don’t. so much so that when given no other bourbon as a choice, i don’t choose it. i choose a sour mash. i never said they were the same, my point was to show how much i don’t like beam.
you are being difficult

No worries … I knew exactly where you were coming from.
Still like a Beam with ribs … something very “sec football” about it.

You’re being overly sensitive.
