Jerry Jones Questioned Jason Garrett About Getting Conservative Against the Patriots
Jerry Jones wasn’t happy with Jason Garrett’s playcalling late in the game against New England, according to Mike Silver of Yahoo Sports. First, the Cowboys settled for a field goal when the game was tied at 13-13 with about 6 minutes left. You can second guess any play, and I don’t think there was a problem with any one specific play call in a vacuum, but the whole sequence felt very conservative, and they ran an inside shovel pass that was shut down right away on third and goal from the 5.
“When you get in a situation like that, you’ve got to go for the kill,” Jones told Y! Sports shortly before leaving the Cowboys’ locker room. “I felt like we could’ve been more aggressive. Our defense had been good all day, but you knew Brady had a length-of-the-field drive in him – so it didn’t surprise me at all when he took them down at the end.”
After the Dallas defense had forced a punt, Dallas got the ball back with 3:36 remaining, and with New England having all three timeouts. Every situation is different, but I don’t see how this situation favors being conservative. The Cowboys had struggled to run all day, and Felix Jones was already lost to an ankle injury. The biggest matchup advantage in this game was the Dallas passing offense against the New England pass defense, and this would be a situation where the Patriots would overplay against the run. Oh, and Tom Brady was on the other side. I know that the Cowboys had success in limiting Brady in this game, but as we saw (once again), you give a great quarterback another chance, and you pay.
The Cowboys weren’t going to bleed enough clock/timeouts to provide a strategic advantage without picking up a first down. Getting the ball back with 2:31, a timeout, and the two minute warning wasn’t going to bother Brady, needing a field goal to tie. The Cowboys ran it three straight times, losing yards each time (a penalty on third down pushed them back further). I think the mistake was not to pass on either first or second down.
My impression of Garrett so far is that he can be conservative. I thought he was very conservative, for example, in last year’s Thanksgiving game against the Saints, settling for field goals in what turned out to be a close loss. I know you will say “Tony Romo“. Yes, Romo had a bad game against Detroit in the second half–those interceptions came much earlier in the half and you are not going to run it every down. Yes, he has made some errors. Looking at his career, though, he’s also made a lot of good plays, game winning plays in the fourth quarter, and you may be surprised to know that he has the highest yards per attempt of any quarterback in the fourth quarter when leading by a score or tied over the last three years. If Garrett didn’t trust him to get back out there and win, that’s a problem. A reliever, a quarterback, and a coach must have a short memory and make the calls that win the game. Garrett coached scared.
At least he’s got an owner that recognizes this as well. You won’t beat good quarterbacks in the playoffs bleeding them of a few timeouts and punting right back with more than two minutes left. I doubt Bill Belichick would have approached it the same way with Tony Romo on the other side and a three point lead.

Dallas has to be the scariest 2-3 team in the NFL. They should have beaten both the Jets and the Pats on the road. Dez Bryant is a total beast, too.
October 17th, 2011 at 12:55 PM
Jerry should just put his money where his mouth is and coach the damn team already.
October 17th, 2011 at 12:57 PM
Good stuff Lisk, agree all around. Belicheck is going on 4th down to not give the ball back to Manning, while Garrett basically just hands the ball to Brady.
October 17th, 2011 at 12:57 PM
Belichick is just awesome enough that there’s a chance of seeing this on Wednesday:
October 17th, 2011 at 12:59 PM
Let’s not go crazy there… the Pats played to give that game away. It wasn’t just a matter of Dallas clicking and New England having no answer. It was pretty sloppy all around at times.

There’s a difference between “should’ve” and “could’ve”. The game yesterday was 50/50, doesn’t mean they should’ve won.

Publicly questioning your coach directly after the game doesn’t seem to be something that helps this situation. Why not just take it up with Garrett today or on the plane ride home?
Jerry Jones is meddlesome. A great owner, but meddlesome.
October 17th, 2011 at 1:01 PM
Which was entirely predictable (and indeed, was predicted by many people) because of the many ways Rob Ryan’s defense with the Browns last year stifled Brady.
October 17th, 2011 at 1:01 PM
i remember people saying similar things last year when they were 1-7
October 17th, 2011 at 1:02 PM
cuts both ways, they could also be 0-5 if the 49ers don’t blow that game thanks to harbaugh’s brain cramp and washington doesn’t blitz 8 on 3rd and 21

I don’t know. I’ve seen enough of Tony Romo over the years. I really don’t blame Garrett here.
Not so fast, my stat quoting friend.
I’d like a break down to see the quality of opponents these yards were gained against before I anoint these numbers as a “Jason Garrett is a scared ginger” smoking gun. Tony Romo has earned his reputation for late game screw ups honestly.
October 17th, 2011 at 1:02 PM
Not gonna lie, I was yelling at Belichick to go for it on 4th down. Given the way the Pats D had played, I was certain they wouldn’t get the ball back.
Goes to show what I know.
October 17th, 2011 at 1:03 PM
I think it had more to do with protecting Romo. After the Jets and Lions debacles, Garrett didn’t want to see Romo get grilled if the same thing happened for a 3rd time.
October 17th, 2011 at 1:04 PM
An intoxicated Donte Stallworth moments before realizing he wasn’t playing Grand Theft Auto at home.
October 17th, 2011 at 1:05 PM
Which is fine if the player is in the early stage of his career. Romo is 31 and has been the guy there for a long time. If that’s actually Garrett’s motivation, it’s not good.
October 17th, 2011 at 1:06 PM
And don’t look now, but they beat SF on the road too. SF has three very strong road wins this year and may be much better than most people give them credit for (Alex Smith still sort of stinks though)
Jerry should question his coach here. That was some pussy play calling after going down the field at will. Why stop what was working? Put the foot on their throats.

getting dusty in here. how touching

If Devin McCourty doesn’t remember how to tackle again, I swear… what happened to diving tackle for loss with a forced fumble???
October 17th, 2011 at 1:10 PM
i was surprised they didn’t go for it, but, their defense surprised me and came up with some big stops at the end of the game.
there were some big plays due to missed tackles for YAC, but overall their play is really starting to improve. Haynesworth actually had a decent impact, too.

sure, just not publicly
October 17th, 2011 at 1:14 PM
brady must be sore today. three sacks, right? ware is beast, and peppers had a nice game last night with an injury unless that was fakery
again, i say, cutler took down allen with a block. suck it cutler haters

Young Belichick defenses always 1) improve throughout the season and 2) tighten up in the red zone. However… it looks like the free safety spot is going to be a huge problem for them. The shortened offseason didn’t give them enough time to bring in free agents, but if maybe they get a chance to go out and pick up a reliable safety like Atlanta’s James Sanders, that would help them out a ton.

I know you will say “Tony Romo“.
Tony Romo.
October 17th, 2011 at 1:17 PM
They are 2-3 and have had the hardest schedule so far this year. The schedule eases up now and then we will know better what type of team they are. I wish Garrett would have went for the jugular there but I could understand his reluctance. I was fine with him putting it on his defense which had been stout all game.
October 17th, 2011 at 1:20 PM
The same Dez Bryant that’s had a total of two receptions in the four 2nd halves he’s played this season?
October 17th, 2011 at 1:20 PM
Shocker that an Eagles fan is skeptical of Lisk’s stats about Tony Romo in the 4th quarter. This isn’t college, there is no strength of schedule coefficient thrown in to determine quality of a win. Plenty of good QBs spit the bit at the end of games. Brees and Fitzpatrick did it yesterday.
October 17th, 2011 at 1:23 PM
As long as Jerry Jones and whatever dancing monkey he has at head coach are calling the plays, Dallas will remain oh-fer in Super Bowls. I still think that within the next year or so, Sean Payton will be the Cowboys’ GM-head coach.
October 17th, 2011 at 1:23 PM
Yes the same Dez Bryant that has played injured all year. paralysis by over analysis you have.
October 17th, 2011 at 1:27 PM
This is dumb. Garrett is far from the likes of Phillips. I don’t think anyone thinks that Garrett is another puppet.
October 17th, 2011 at 1:28 PM

He dropped a couple yesterday….
October 17th, 2011 at 1:29 PM
I would like to see Dez’s Wonderlic score. Kid probably has trouble absorbing the playbook. And his conditioning probably isn’t what it should be. And Garrett didn’t have to take the Cowboys job. Once he went 5-3 with John freaking Kitna he got a lot of leeway and was able to dictate how things were gonna be when he became head coach. He’s no dancing monkey.
October 17th, 2011 at 1:30 PM
If I were a “real” Eagles fan, I would accuse Romo of being a cock chugging choke artist.
But I didn’t do that.
I merely suggested that statistics can be taken out of context. Are you Tony’s agent or close relative or something?
October 17th, 2011 at 1:31 PM
i always find Tony Romo’s hand gestures at the line of scrimmage to be entertaining. if you didn’t know he was playing football you’d think he was first generation Italian immigrant.
October 17th, 2011 at 1:31 PM
Not nearly as many as Miles Austin did. But yes the receivers did not help Romo out too much yesterday.
October 17th, 2011 at 1:34 PM
For all the pub that Brady’s 2 minutes is getting, I fully hand that win to the defense. Brav-fucking-O. 4 turnovers by the Offense putting them in bad spots, but they kept them in the game just long enough for Brady to take the lead in the end.. Im getting more confident that they will keep improving. Love Arrington. Love Carter. Wilfork soooo close to another INT.
October 17th, 2011 at 1:35 PM
Reportedly a 16
October 17th, 2011 at 1:37 PM
Curious to see Lisk’s power rankings tomorrow. Steelers looked mighty shaky at home against the Jags. Saints lose in TB. Philly picks up a divisional win. Lions lose.
Should be a nice little shake up.

el oh el

Now if the Cubs could just put a bow on this Theo thing today, it’ll have been a great 3 days for this guy. There’s no baseball for two days. Finish this thing before the WS begins.
In other words, stop being a penis Larry.
October 17th, 2011 at 1:45 PM
What can you tell me about Trey Mcnutt?
October 17th, 2011 at 1:45 PM
Oh get the fuck out here with that. With yesterdays games Dez has just played 16 games in the NFL. Lets not jump to conclusions and horrible comparisons with a small sample size

Where is everyone?

October 17th, 2011 at 2:08 PM
Why wouldn’t the Cubs just keep saying no to whatever Boston asked for? There’s no shot Theo goes back there.
October 17th, 2011 at 2:09 PM
When he’s looking in the mirror while he’s fixing his tie, he can see that with Jerrah’s statement, he is now in the Wade Phillips role, while Rob Ryan is now in his role as the hot shot coordinator who is about to be pined for by Cowboy nation.
October 17th, 2011 at 2:11 PM
Jerry Jones is meddlesome. A great owner, but meddlesome.
Jery Jones is a meddlesome owner and a great businessman.
October 17th, 2011 at 2:12 PM
If the Cowboys had a serviceable LG and C, they could be ok. The narrative about Romo being a “choker” is tiresome. I think most people jump on that meme due to ESPN. Which is sad, because ESPN is terrible.
October 17th, 2011 at 2:18 PM
Because Boston could drag on negotiations while things such as Free Agency passes?
October 17th, 2011 at 2:35 PM
If Jones had allowed his coach to build a fucking offensive line that was worth a shit, none of this would’ve come to pass. Instead, Garrett is handcuffed with gimps like Nagy, Arkin, and Costa because Jerry Jones has turned into a penny-pinching bitch.
October 17th, 2011 at 4:35 PM
I would like to see Dez’s Wonderlic score
So would the security force at Northpark Mall.
