Dan Wheldon and His Wife Reportedly Got Each Other’s Initials Tattooed on Their Wrists the Night Before He Died
You’re probably saddened by the death of 33-year-old Dan Wheldon. This might add to your sorrows:
A tipster told Vegas Confidential that Wheldon and his wife had their initials — D.W. and S.W. — tattooed on their wrists about 10 p.m. at Huntington Ink at the Palms. A female employee at the tattoo shop declined comment, saying, “Sorry, I can’t give out that information.”
A reason to believe the story – George Maloof is quoted in Norm Clarke’s piece, and George Maloof owns the Palms. [LVRJ]
For added perspective on Wheldon, I recommend this column by Ed Graney, also in the Review-Journal.
[UPDATE: Darren Rovell has found a photo of Wheldon's tattoo.]

I saw this on Twitter and am a bit surprised that it’s been so newsworthy. Tragic story all around though. Maybe this just hits that nail even more.

Some news outlets want to give us anything other than political buttfucking in DC and the Occupy movements

Ugh so terrible. I don’t know alot about racing, but I do know how the media works. Prepare for a barrage of “Is racing too dangerous” articles/pieces/ect.

It sucks that this guy died…but does the tattoo news really add anything to this story?

Near my building are about 100 tents in the adjacent park for Occupy Pittsburgh. I walked by it at lunch — my personal favorite sign was one that simply said “IM REALLY PISSED OFF”. Other than that they were just standing there not harming anyone. Though they claim to not leave “Until They Win” — not sure exactly what that means, but I’m pretty sure when it’s about 20 degrees at night they will have “won”.

the Occupy Herbstreit people down on Wall Street are hilarious.
I wish I was down in Pittsburgh. i need a primanti bros. sandwich

I guess this was what I was trying to say. Does it just hammers home just how sad this was? Maybe so. Either way it’s tragic. With or without the tattoos.

The ones with their card board signs along Grant St. looked like enthusiastic kids at their fund raiser car wash.
October 17th, 2011 at 3:15 PM
This is the best Occupy Herbstreit sign thus far.
October 17th, 2011 at 3:16 PM
It looks like the same guy in every picture I’ve seen. My favorite sign:
“No Jobs + No Showers – Occupy Wall Street or Alabama Tailgate?”

I read on CNN that his helmet his the retaining wall while the car hit the retaining fence. Shitty way to go out
October 17th, 2011 at 3:17 PM
Anything like that makes it sadder. That is, of course, if you have a heart.

Sounds like the structure around his head was completely sheared off by impact. Sad.

I love Al Michaels as a play by play guy, but he comes off as a colossal blow hard on this BS Report I’m listening to.
October 17th, 2011 at 3:20 PM
I’m not sure I agree that it makes it sadder. I think it’s just as sad without a story about he and his wife getting tattoos. I think his mother suffering from Alzheimer’s is just brutal.
October 17th, 2011 at 3:26 PM
That may or may not be the case, but what’s the point of adding this life tidbit? I’ll bet they said ‘I love you. I love you too.’ the last time they talked.

Massive ego comes through on this podcast and he dominates the convo but it was a good listen and some good stories to go with the name drops.

BS Report is garbage, get some Solid Verbal in your life. Although that pile of feces known as Grantland recently started paying them to be on the site, it hasn’t ruined their spectacular podcast yet.

Yeah… some good stories… but wow… name drop city.

I stopped listening regularly awhile ago… but thought I’d give Al a shot. Simmons is so out of his league in this interview. “Waiting for the QB to ‘Hike the ball’. Then he hiked it.” Really Bill?
October 17th, 2011 at 3:41 PM
The Reverbs have got to go, though.
October 17th, 2011 at 3:42 PM
It’s not garbage overall. It depends on the guest. Solid Verbal is good, yes, if all you want to listen to is college football talk.
October 17th, 2011 at 3:44 PM
Hello?! He’s the greatest!
At first I thought he just sounded like a dude sharing stories, then it felt like he was trying hard to seem cool.
October 17th, 2011 at 3:45 PM
did you want him talking about his favorite breakfast cereal instead? the guy’s called damn near every major sporting event at some point in his career and has crossed paths with all sorts of people, makes for interesting storytelling
October 17th, 2011 at 3:45 PM
Also … Men in Blazers on the Grantland Network is highly entertaining. And I don’t follow soccer at all.

Mostly. I’ve tried some NFL ones like Rich Eisen’s but havent found anything on par with the Verballers as far as quality and production values. And that doesnt have ridiculous talking head, corporate line towing “analysts” on.

He seems like the guy who wouldn’t let you out of a half hour conversation detailing how he went sailing with George Clooney last weekend at some cocktail party.
“George! What a guy! Let me tell you how we’re pals. Did I mention I live in Brentwood and played tennis with Nicole and OJ?!

I could literally cure cancer and you’d find some way to shit on it. It’s just my (and a few others) opinion. I’ve listened to a BS report or two with other guests and haven’t had that impression.
October 17th, 2011 at 3:50 PM
I think the point of the tattoo story is to let us know that maybe these two were the real deal. Maybe he wasn’t the typical superstar athlete husband who cheats on his wife.

I listened to a Dan Wetzel podcast with him on it and thought he was terrible. His voice was god awful. It had this whiney tone to it. He sounded like he was trying so hard to be funny. Wasn’t a fan at all
October 17th, 2011 at 4:03 PM
I should clarify that I’m talking about Chris Vernon and not Eifiling. I’m sure he sounds perfectly fine on the radio.

That shit’s mad boring to me. Tried it a couple times and found myself just skipping until it landed on Arkansas/WVU/Michigan.
