2012 NFL Mock Draft 2.0: Lots of Offense in the Top 10
The 2012 NFL Mock Draft Version 1.0 came out in May, and much has changed. The lockout has ended. Free agents have moved. The season is one month old and you kind of have an idea of who needs what. The college football season is a month old, too, and some players are helping their stock. It seemed like a good time for the 2012 NFL Mock Draft Version 2.0. The order is anyone’s guess, and this week, a Packers-Ravens Super Bowl sounds possible. Yes, I have the Bills, Redskins, Giants and Falcons (!) missing the playoffs. I still have the Jets in there (albeit tenuously).
1. Miami Dolphins – Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford
2. Jacksonville Jaguars - Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma St. - Lowest scoring offense in the league needs a playmaker. Last WR to go this high? Calvin Johnson in 2007.
3. Indianapolis Colts - Matt Kalil, OL, USC – Many, many holes on defense. Or, they get a franchise OL to protect Peyton for his final few years.
4. Kansas City Chiefs – Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma – This is under the assumption that the new coach – as of now, I don’t see Haley getting an extension – will want his own QB. Not everyone loves Landry, though.
5. St. Louis Rams – Jonathan Martin, OL, Stanford - Sam Bradford has been sacked a league-high 18 times through four games.
6. Seattle Seahawks – Matt Barkley, QB, USC – Too high? The Pete Carroll recruit at USC will enjoy life throwing to Sidney Rice.
7. Cleveland Browns – Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama – Crestfallen that there’s no QB here, the Browns take the best back in the draft and decide not to pay Peyton Hillis. And yes, I realize that’s seven offensive players in a row, and highly unlikely to happen.
8. Arizona Cardinals – Vontaze Burfict, LB, Arizona St. – The Sun Devil stays local to bolster a meek defense. Would he punch out a Cardinal?
9. Carolina Panthers – Jerel Worthy, DT, Michigan St. - 2nd worst run defense in the league starts two rookies at DT, and Worthy is better than both of them.
10. Denver Broncos – Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama – Probably the best corner in the draft. Takes the baton from Champ Bailey.
11. Minnesota Vikings – Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU – In a stacked LSU secondary, he doesn’t get that much publicity. But he has the potential to be a shutdown corner.
12. Oakland Raiders – Cliff Harris, CB, Oregon – Either bolster that secondary or beef up the offensive line. Don’t think his speeding ticket matters.
13. Cincinnati Bengals – Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina – QB Andy Dalton would have two former SEC stars at his disposal.
14. Tampa Bay Bucs – Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina – Not a huge fan of his work, but Ronde Barber turns 37 in April.
15. Tennessee Titans – Jared Crick, DL, Nebraska – Probably goes higher. Just couldn’t find a team with a major 4-3 DE need.
16. Buffalo Bills – Manti T’eo, LB, Notre Dame – Quick way to bolster that sluggish 3-4 defense.
17. Chicago Bears – Brandon Thompson, DT, Clemson – I know, I know, Cutler needs protection … but the best ones are gone and the Bears are giving up 5.1 ypc.
18. Washington Redskins - Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College – Would add to an increasingly-formidable defense. Leads the country in tackles with 83.
19. New York Giants - Courtney Upshaw, LB, Alabama – As a Jets fan, I’d hate for this to happen.
20. Cleveland Browns (from Atlanta Falcons) – Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina – At 6-6, 285, everyone loves him (Kiper has him No. 2 right now), but I’m not yet sold on him in the Top 10. Would be a great fit in the Browns’ 4-3.
21. San Francisco 49ers – Riley Reiff, OL, Iowa – Whoever the 49ers start at QB next year will need more protection than Alex Smith is getting.
22. New York Jets – Brandon Jenkins, LB, FSU – Very tempted to go with an offensive lineman (Georgia’s Cordy Glenn?) but Jenkins is a 6-3, 265 monster who could play OLB or possibly DE. Kiper thinks Jenkins will be a 4-3 DE, which might make me change this pick. I think Jenkins could shed 10 pounds and replace Bart Scott/Bryant Thomas.
23. San Diego Chargers – Dont’a Hightower, LB, Alabama – Love this guy. Major steal if he falls this far.
24. Dallas Cowboys – Jayron Hosley, CB, Virginia Tech – Too many corners going in the 1st round? He’d be the fifth.
25. Pittsburgh Steelers – Andrew Datko, OL, Florida State – The defense needs to get younger, but they line still isn’t protecting Big Ben (sacked 14 times so far).
26. Philadelphia Eagles – Zach Brown, LB, North Carolina – Weak linebacking crew for a Super Bowl contender. Brown is 6-2, 230 and likely would start immediately.
27. Houston Texans – Ray Ray Armstrong, Safety, Miami – Texans really have a strong nucleus, but there’s a need in the secondary.
28. Detroit Lions – Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska – It’s a DB or a RB, and I could find a tailback to go in this spot.
29. New England Patriots (from New Orleans Saints) – Billy Winn, DL, Boise State – The Patriots still lack a pass rush. But they’ll probably trade this pick.
30. New England Patriots – Peter Konz, OL, Wisconsin – When Belichick’s drafting, you close your eyes and throw darts when making projections. If they don’t trade the other pick, they’ll trade this one.
31. Green Bay Packers – Mike Adams, OL, Ohio State – Gotta protect the best QB in the league. Yeah, I went there.
32. Baltimore Ravens – Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina – Has he blown up enough to crack the first round? 6-foot-2 275-pound playmaking machine is a sick athlete with 5.5 sacks.

That picture is a serious candidate for sports photo of the year should such a category exist.

Did the Vikings trade down?
October 6th, 2011 at 3:23 PM
I want Burfict on Bears

Hakee….
October 6th, 2011 at 3:24 PM
The Lions will take Mike Adams.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:24 PM
Did the Vikings trade down?
looks like the Ravens won the Superbowl, and Dallas made the playoffs.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:24 PM
I love the brief, sentence fragment descriptions for all non Jets picks.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:25 PM
So that’s two Super Bowls the Raven’s won with a shitty QB?
October 6th, 2011 at 3:25 PM
I like the pick of Claiborne but there’s no way the Vikings are way down at 11.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:25 PM
Claiborne will be a higher draft pick in 2012 than Tyrann Mathieu in 2013 or 2014. Claiborne has the Patrick Peterson measurables. Mathieu is about the size of Brent Grimes.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:25 PM
Yeah but they have their tackles of the future on the roster already, of course there’s plenty of time for Sherrod and Bulaga to get gunned down in a drug deal gone bad I suppose, only 6 months until the draft
Remember that they’re about to turn a corner thanks to their quarterback who isn’t bad and hasn’t been for three years
October 6th, 2011 at 3:26 PM
Don’t think the Colts would go after Kalil since they just drafted that dude from BC last year. Would probably trade down to pick up extra picks and fill LB, S, DT.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:27 PM
it’s unlikely to happen because it’s fucking stupid. only AP’s get drafted that highly unless you take CJ spiller #bilols.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:27 PM
I thought he was too small?
Re: Cincy
I don’t see them spending another top pick on a WR. They need a RB and loads of defense.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:28 PM
If there is a better time to determine draft order for next year than after week 4, I can’t think of it.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:28 PM
I would also be stunned if Gilmore is a first round pick, let alone one in the top half. He’s so overrated.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:29 PM
If there is a better time to determine draft order for next year than after week 4, I can’t think of it.

October 6th, 2011 at 3:29 PM
Uh, why are the Ravens listed as pick 32? They aren’t winning the Super Bowl.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:29 PM
Throw us a bone, TBL. Please don’t bury the hockey post at 5 PM EST. I know it’s in there.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:30 PM
Oof.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:30 PM
Bravo, but this is so much better than some chick not saying “fucking” and TBL saying she did anyway. Or some post on who Jay Cutler might be dating. Or a sponsored post by “The League” that you can’t comment on.

These posts are the equivalent of going to take a dump, but the only thing that comes out is a fart. Pointless, and yet it still smells like shit.

Re: Cincy

they’re doing pretty well on defense this year, right? Top 3, I think.
Don’t think the Colts would go after Kalil since they just drafted that dude from BC last year. Would probably trade down to pick up extra picks and fill LB, S, DT.
their O line is pret-ty pret-ty shit-ty, but mainly they need to stop missing on first round draft choices. And also, that kid from BC just went out for the year, so who knows if he’s actually any good.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:31 PM
If the Chiefs select Landry Jones, I will have to do something drastic. I may not be able to take it. I tried to give that guy a chance over the last few games again, still not seeing why he is projected in the top 5. I’m normally pretty good at picking which guys will go highly, even if they turn out to suck, and I’m not getting it. Great receivers, and yes, when he has absolutely no pressure because he plays on the better team, he can hurt you. Handles pressure very poorly.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:31 PM
Ahhhh, memories of Matt Jones, Reggie Williams, and R. Jay Soward.

October 6th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
fuck this noise…I LOVE THE DRAFT. draft coverage all year round for browns fans.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
Uh, why are the Ravens listed as pick 32? They aren’t winning the Super Bowl.
Who knows, man. I’ve seen 2 games (not the one where they shit the bed against Tennessee) and their defense could drag fucking Flacco just about anywhere, if he’d just let the clock run some.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
Oh and you could definitely see someone like the Browns using their two first round picks to move up to grab Alshon or Blackmon.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
I can live with that being the compensation for Mark Ingram. Especially considering the other pick in the deal (Shane Vereen) is on the verge of becoming this year’s Kevin O’Connell.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
aw martyrs…go check out the steelers OL if you wanna see a triage unit.

Kirk Ferentz to KC is the new Stoops to Notre Dame.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:34 PM
TBL, did you look at current rosters for this?
The Colts just spend their first 2 picks on OT this year? Niners have two recent 1st round picks starting at OT. Packers have spent last 2 1st rounders on OT. Yet they all are draft OT this year?
Seems like all you did was check to see the sack #s and decide they need OL help.

When was the last time I made a negative comment about baseball inside a baseball post? I avoid them like the plague, dude.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:34 PM
The Browns are going to get better than a 20th overall pick from Atlanta.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:35 PM
it looks like they finally have some decent corners.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:35 PM
Michael Floyd? I guess he’d be the 3rd WR taken in the draft. In this pass-heavy league, more than 2 WRs will get picked in Round 1.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:35 PM
When was the last time I made a negative comment about baseball inside a baseball post? I avoid them like the plague, dude.

Also, I don’t even what the fuck this means. I can’t have what both ways? I can’t have a sports blog that doesn’t dumb shit down to the LCD by talking about who’s fucking who? I’m very confused by what you’re getting at here.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:35 PM
not even the most optimistic Vikings fan has them winning enough games for them to drop out of the top 10.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:36 PM
i avoid them like the plague as well, but sometimes i actively look for the plague and complain my way through the process. it’s a holistic approach…give it a try! and if that doesn’t work, chug a bottle of dimatapp and hallucinate your cares away.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
No. That’s not what I was getting it. Why the fuck would they draft a defensive tackle if they already have five of them!?
Because, you know, it’s not like Brian Urlacher needs a replacement soon or anything. Or the secondary isn’t completely terrible outside of Peanut Tillman. Or the offensive line doesn’t need an upgrade. Or they don’t need a wide receiver.
Yeah. Let’s just draft another defensive tackle. Great research in forecasting that pick.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
The Steelers could go 10-6 or 6-10. There is no middle ground.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
Vikings are drafting too low.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
Seems like all you did was check to see the sack #s and decide they need OL help.
give him some credit. He also cross referenced passing yardage against to see if teams needed a corner.

October 6th, 2011 at 3:38 PM
Say that when Matt Ryan gets his 4th concussion of the year.
But yeah, this list has all kinds of FAIL. Tennessee and Tampa in the lower half of the draft. Washington is the first team to pick in the NFC East. And the Ravens in the Super Bowl.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:38 PM
In the Colts game, the decision on the sideline on who was going to play the RT position after ANOTHER injury was between the rookie RT with 1 arm or our 2nd string TE.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:38 PM
By all means go find them (hint: they don’t exist). I probably click baseball links 1/3 of the time they go up here, if that. I probably comment on baseball posts maybe 1/10 times. Of that, probably 1/5 is a rip on baseball. By all means keep making shit up, though.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:38 PM
oh…in that case, carry on.

according to the blurb in draft spot #15, your team has no glaring need of a rush end in your 4 man front.

I know. This post just aggravates me due to its timing.
Reiff could leave, but I’m doubtful he will. Bulaga’s family wanted him to go to the NFL a year early. Reiff’s mom wants him to get his degree because no one in their family has a college degree. He chose Iowa to stay close to home because he’s close with his family. I think he’ll stay.

He’s annoyed at the team doctors right now who want to be a little more cautious with his knee injury, I like that
October 6th, 2011 at 3:56 PM
They make their chili with spaghetti. That’s almost as stupid as a mock draft in week 5 of the season.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:57 PM
someone linked it the other day, it wasn’t Harvin was it? doesn’t seem like I remember Crabtree on there I could be wrong though.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:57 PM
it was maclin, harvin, britt, wallace, and massaquoi that were all better than Hakeem Nicks.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:57 PM
oh yea…good call.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:58 PM
excuse me, Hakeen Nicks.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:58 PM
Again, this isn’t even the 4th dumbest post of the day, so at least we have that going for them.
October 6th, 2011 at 3:59 PM
Not in the 1st 15 picks, we don’t.
Defense is good, but we’re having problems stopping the run, and our pass defense is improving Carlos Dunlap doesn’t have any sacks but he’s been a monster, and deserves to start. But the D Line is always available for upgrade and I don’t trust our safeties or Clements.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:00 PM
Left or right? If it’s his left it might be cause for concern. Same one he hurt in college our Orange Bowl season. Rushed back to play in the ISU game early in the season on it and hurt it in that game.
Has a history with that knee. If it’s the right, I wouldn’t be concerned.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:02 PM
You could make a half assed argument for the first 4 of those guys, but to throw Massoquoi in there screams of “I must be contrarian to the bitter end.”
October 6th, 2011 at 4:02 PM
I guess those one liners from yester-year were replaced with Jahnoff and Eifling posts?
October 6th, 2011 at 4:04 PM
Referencing that post will never get old
October 6th, 2011 at 4:04 PM
seriously…when you’re the 3rd WR behind josh cribbs and a rookie, and even then, are the option behind a TE and RB/FB, you’re really not that good.
momass is ok. serviceable. that’s about it.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:05 PM
No matter how you rank them, 2009 is a good WR class.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:05 PM
The Raiders will pick a DB from the MAC that started 9 games in his college career but ran a 4.28 in the 40.
/science
October 6th, 2011 at 4:06 PM
Depends on how bad Cincy is, I guess. If Richardson is on the board can you really pass on him?
October 6th, 2011 at 4:06 PM
then he trolled sparty to respond to the post and then banned his ass.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:07 PM
He seems like he should be a 3rd WR. Work the slot and get the hard yards on 3rd and 6.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:07 PM
He and Earl Bennett should hang out.
/Earl is probably our best wideout too
October 6th, 2011 at 4:08 PM
Is this a reference to someone specific?
October 6th, 2011 at 4:09 PM
We’re not good, but this year we’re not bad enough to get Trent I don’t think. There’s too many shitty teams this year. I think we go at least 6-10 which isn’t gonna cut it.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:10 PM
they will pick 20th at the latest
October 6th, 2011 at 4:12 PM
Our next 4 games could be wins and then we have St Louis & Arizona on the backend, plus Cleveland at home. I don’t think we can lose more than 3 of those games. But we are the Bengals, so we could lose all of those games. Who knows?
October 6th, 2011 at 4:13 PM
No. But I do remember that they picked a safety from Ohio U 2 years ago who wasn’t even on anyone else’s board. I forgot his name.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:13 PM
don’t know if anyone mentioned it, but with the rookie salary rules this would be a good time to move up for a good value if it’s there, 1st round pick and 2 2nd rounders to slide up into the top 15 to pick a great DE.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:13 PM
Is he still on the team? That pick was crazy, he didn’t even get invited to the combine. I saw Ohio play in person that year and I had no idea who he was.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:14 PM
I get the Lisk did that post about the average age of the starters and what not, but A. Smith and B. Keisel, the DE have 1st round picks rotating with them already. McFadden has been replaced with somebody younger. Farrior will be replaced with his back up after this year. The only place where the Defense is old in terms of depth is NT. they need a young replacement soon for Hampton, which I would wager is where they go in the 1st round next year.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:16 PM
Mike Mitchell. Injured until last week. Played his first game. Almost exclusively covers opposing teams TEs.
Rob Gronkowski: 1 catch, 15 yards
He isn’t special, but he does two things well. Cover TEs and tackle.

October 6th, 2011 at 4:19 PM
Enough with the Mike Mitchell love, Babar. It’s all we hear about from you.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:21 PM
Michael Floyd will be a first rounder. Cannot believe he is excluded from this list… dude is sick.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:21 PM
Marvin McNutt too.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:22 PM
I don’t see him in the first round.
Blackmon, Jeffrey, Flloyd, Broyles and Fuller are all ahead of him I would think.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:24 PM
mike brewster will go before mike adams…book it, seal it, save it for later, all that good stuff.
four year starters at center that make all-american teams are more valuable than LT’s with no mean streak and off-field scandals that only play in 2/3 their college team’s games.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:24 PM
I think Michael Floyd is excluded as some kind of reverse jinx thing. I, too, like him a lot as a player. On the other hand, the odds of Vontaze Burfict being the first defensive player picked at #8 have to be 3 million to one so this post is clearly a work in progress
October 6th, 2011 at 4:25 PM
/pours one out for Sparty
October 6th, 2011 at 4:26 PM
im not so sure about that…burfict, for all his personality warts, is the perfect MLB for today’s NFL. he’s outrageously fast, as sure a tackler as there is and he’s very good in coverage. that offers quite a bit of flexibility against multiple WR fronts.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:28 PM
Michael Floyd appears to be a man among boys out there. ND pretty much openly announces they are going to him and dare you to stop it.
TBL, what makes you think the Skins go LB, when clearly their offense is so anemic? Their first pick will be QB or WR, 100% book it.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:28 PM
I think you’re missing what my actual point was. Burfict might be the first Defensive player off the board (I doubt it, but it’s not ridiculous) but for that to be pick #8 seems close to impossible
October 6th, 2011 at 4:29 PM
Iowa players don’t count
October 6th, 2011 at 4:29 PM
OHHHHH…ok. sorry, ive been ADD-ly switching back and forth between this and work all day and am missing a lot of shit. my bad.
i agree with that. only pass rushers and CB’s go that high unless it’s patrick willis.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:30 PM
I won’t rest until he is sipping Mai Tais in Honolulu…even if I have to buy the ticket myself.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:32 PM
So the Texans need another secondary makeover? I would take more LB depth but that’s just me. DeMeco Ryans and his knees aren’t getting any younger.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:33 PM
that’s the piece of paper that was drawn out of the hat. you got a problem with it, talk to the hat.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:34 PM
they have a shitload of players in the NFL. I think Ohio State may only have 1 more player than them on current rosters.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:36 PM
Cardinals don’t like to draft the local boys because they think they are smarter than that. See Suggs, Terrell. But if they did draft him he would certainly punch out Beanie Wells within the first 2 days of training camp.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:36 PM
kidding of course. I should just shut up and be thankful he didn’t make another hockey comment.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:41 PM
Texans secondary isn’t the best in the league by any means, but Jonathan Joseph has to be one of the most underrated corners in the league. That signing was a huge upgrade, I think they have greater concerns in the 1st round
October 6th, 2011 at 4:50 PM
I thought thats why they drafted Cam Heyward, where the F has he been. Oh, right, Ohio State, so he’s probably not very good in the NFL.
October 6th, 2011 at 4:53 PM
coop – Heyward plays DE. He will replace Keisel in 2013 years. If he is as good as Holmes was, I’ll take all the O$U players we can get.
October 6th, 2011 at 8:07 PM
There is no way Holmgren/Heckert take a RB at #7 overall…or in the first round period. They invested a second round pick in 2010 with Montario Hardesty and like the kid. I also think Hillis eventually signs a 3 year deal.
If Colt McCoy proves to be “the guy” for them this year…and I’m far from sold on him…look for them to take a stud LB and a RT to solidify the line.
If Colt looks more like Brady Quinn than Drew Brees at the season’s end I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to see them trade up to get Luck if a team like St. Louis or Jacksonville holds the #1 slot.
