Curtis Granderson Saved the Yankees’ Season, and AJ Burnett Did the Rest
Yankees 10, Tigers 1: Bases loaded, two out in the bottom of the first inning. AJ Burnett was already looking shaky on the mound. An early deficit could have ended the Yankees’ season. Don Kelly of Detroit mashed a line drive to center. Curtis Granderson took a step in, then began racing back and soared to make a dazzling catch to end the inning. If the ball goes over his head, you’re looking at a bases-clearing triple or possibly an inside-the-park homer (Kelly’s fast). Staked to an early lead like that, I think the Tigers coast to victory.
Whew.
Two innings later, Derek Jeter ripped a two-run double, and the Yankees never looked back. A-Rod, Russell Martin, Brett Gardner and Jesus Montero all had two hits. Granderson made another ridiculous catch in center to avoid trouble with the Yanks up 4-1. And AJ Burnett was … pretty damn good. He scattered four hits, gave up a homer to Victor Martinez, and got the win. Of course, this means he’ll shit the bed in his next start in the ALCS, but let’s worry about that later.
Where you at, Jose Valverde?
Rangers 4, Rays 3: Adrian Beltre juiced three out of the yard and the Rangers are going back to the ALCS. Yes, I think we’ve seen Tampa’s ceiling.
Philadelphia 3, St. Louis 2: Ben Francisco launched a three-run homer and the Phillies, despite a few sketchy moments from the bullpen in the last three innings, took a 2-1 series lead on that fraud Tony LaRussa. Here’s video of the Francisco homer. I liked Dick Stockton in the 80s, but what is he doing still calling baseball games? It’s like he wasn’t certain if this was a homer or not.
Arizona 8, Milwaukee 1: The Wildcats Cardinals Diamondbacks rode a grand slam from some guy named Paul Goldschmidt to victory. Is anyone paying attention to this series? At all? I don’t think I’ve seen one pitch live so far through three games. The Brewers will win it regardless of what happens in game four. I’m looking forward to Brewers-Phillies, though.

I really hope this is the Brewers mind set as well.
The D-Backs are pretty much throwing the series with all of the idiotic decisions they’ve made. I’m not too worried.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:09 AM
I’m not a fan of Tony LaRussa, but why exactly is he a fraud?
October 5th, 2011 at 10:11 AM

He’s certainly not a fraud. His record speaks for itself. A whiny dick? Certainly. Fraud? No.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:12 AM
Just a great adjustment. The screaming liner in the center fielder’s direction is such a tough play.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:13 AM
I wasn’t sure at first either. To me it looked like the ball took a crazy bounce and was a ground rule double.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:14 AM
They’ve played that way on the base paths all year long so I just sigh when it happens now. But I will take a game 5 with Kennedy, thats all I could ask for.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:15 AM
They’ve played that way on the base paths all year long so I just sigh when it happens now.
Gibson pitching to Lucroy with two outs and the pitcher on deck in game one, and Fielder in Game 2 didn’t seem wise at the time either.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:16 AM
I don’t. They’re loaded with young talent and have probably the best general manager in the AL East.
Shawn Marcum looks like Pigpen from the Peanuts.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:16 AM
Much more importantly, as I heard radio replay this morning of the Dbacks grand slam – what is Chris Berman doing calling baseball games?
October 5th, 2011 at 10:16 AM
I’m sure you’ve watched many Tigers games this season to come to that conclusion.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:17 AM

Smiling wryly and saying “I’m just joking” right after referred comments. But you wouldn’t know that because your baseball knowledge is smaller than Justin Beiber’s dick.

Found out this morning I’m going tomorrow night. Giddy up.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:19 AM
I dont want to pile on, but I had to laugh when TBL actually questioned whether a safe/out on the basepaths was reviewable last night.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:19 AM
Hey now… TBL actually watched the Yankees game last night. I think we should give credit while we can. He’s watching baseball. This is a good thing!
October 5th, 2011 at 10:19 AM
They were certainly bad decisions. The Lucroy one I found less to be because well Lucroy sucks and I like the idea of having the Brewers start an inning with the 9 hole up. The Fielder one is inexcusable.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:20 AM
Lucky dog. The Stadium is going to be electric.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:20 AM
Sort of think you’re almost better off starting on the road in these 5 game series. No pressure, steal 1 of the first 2, then huge momentum for that team as they go home for 2. They should shorten season and make 7 game series, you’re season can be over so quickly in these series, feels cheap.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
I thought he only clarified it after a teammate said something.
Best note from last night’s game was Miggy asking the Yankee dugout if they wanted to keep the ball after A-Rod got his first hit of the series. Fantastic. Had no idea he was funny.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
Very cool. If you don’t mind me asking… how much postseason tickets cost?
October 5th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
I think you’re wrong. Still have Price, Shields, Hellickson, Moore, Davis and Niemann with Archer coming up in the next year or so. They are the masters at bullpen reclamation projects and a full year of Desmond Jennings in their lineup means they are still going to be competing. Oh and they have a fairly solid SS prospect (Tim Beckham) who should be taking over mid-season in ’12.
If anything, the Yankees have to worry about a rotation that consists of CC-Nova-Hughes-Burnett and ??? and an aging lineup. Rays and Blue Jays are not going to be pushovers anymore.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
Yeah, but he was probably a little sauced
October 5th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
Tampa’s going to be a beast for a while. They’re young and loaded with talent.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
LaRussa will take the starting pitcher out in the 2nd inning or make a pitching change to gain an advantage over a .188 left handed pitcher, but he didn’t do it with the advantage in the series in the balance?
October 5th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
He might not on Thursday, but if you get a chance to see him on the basepaths or holding a guy at first, he’s quite chatty and smiley. I’ve never see him not like another ball player. He’s seriously like a large child.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
Love a funny drunk
Too soon?
October 5th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
Indeed.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
Yet you like Verne Lundquist? He’s lost far more than Stockton.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
Agree with you guys on the Rays. That team will still be good and a competitor. What will they do with Upton? He’s a FA soon, right?
October 5th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
I’m not sure actually. Still waiting for them to be dropped off, but my guy said they’re field level.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
What will they do with Upton? He’s a FA soon, righ
They’ll let him go… that’s kind of what they do. Keep you for 6 years, and then let you move on. He’s not nearly as good as his brother anyway.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:26 AM
Dead horse joke beaten more: CC’s weight or Cabrera and alcohol?
October 5th, 2011 at 10:26 AM
Wouldn’t be overly surprised to see them move Upton this offseason and try to pick up some prospects. Jennings would move over to center and maybe they play Zobrist more at LF and have Joyce play more RF.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:26 AM
I agree with this. Also, I know you hate the Cardinals with the fiery hot passion of 1000 suns, but once the Cards are knocked out, I’ll be rooting for your Brewers. I’m not a fan of Greinke or T-Plush, but the rest of the team is pretty likeable.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:26 AM
Hughes and Nova are very young plus they have several young pitchers they are high on (killer B’s) and that rank highly among top prospect lists, not as tho that means much.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
I figured as much. He was in some trade talks at the deadline so they could get some return on him. He’s a good player, but not that good. And Jupton is much better.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
I’m guessing they move Upton this offseason and slide Jennings over to CF.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
That’s going to be a large check to write.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
A lot of the prospect guys believe that one of the killer B’s will be the eventual Mo replacement. They are lacking in pitching prospects behind that.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
Yeah.. by let him go I meant trade him or let him leave via FA and get draft picks in return.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
LaRussa might be a shingles-infested asshole who enjoys naps behind the wheel at stoplights, but he’s not a fraud. You could argue he gets more use out of his players than most MLB managers.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
Best note from last night’s game was Miggy asking the Yankee dugout if they wanted to keep the ball after A-Rod got his first hit of the series. Fantastic. Had no idea he was funny.
I heard his hilarious when he’s drinking
October 5th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
This year might be the last offseason with draft pick compensation. I’m thinking (and hoping) that gets changed in the next CBA.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:30 AM
That’s the beauty of it, they’re free.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:30 AM

The 2013 starting pitcher free agent list is pretty juicy. The Yanks will be in on one of the following:
Matt Cain (28)
Zack Greinke (28)
Cole Hamels (29)
Dan Haren (32)
Jonathan Sanchez (30)
James Shields (31)
Not saying they all make it to UFA, but as of today, all of their contracts end after next season.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
I hope Jacob Turner and Andrew Oliver turn out to be good starters for the Tigers. Someone is going to have to replace Brad Penny and bump Rick Porcello to No. 5 until he figures out how to be a MLB pitcher. Ironic that Oliver is a year-plus older than Porcello but the latter has been in the bigs for three seasons.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
I have “a guy” for lots of things, but not free Yankee tickets. I need one of those.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
All past their prime which would fit in well with the other pitching acquisitions they’ve made in recent years.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
Dear Sirius radio, please stop playing fucking Bob Seger on every rock station today. Thank you.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:32 AM

October 5th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
A lot of the prospect guys believe that one of the killer B’s will be the eventual Mo replacement. They are lacking in pitching prospects behind that.
They have prospects at other positions they can flip for pitching, catcher for instance. im more worried about the lineup than the pitching
October 5th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
Cole Hamels and Matt Cain are past their prime? I’d certainly take both on my staff in 2 years if that were a possibility. Especially Matt Cain. Give that kid some run support and he wins 20 this past year.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
It will be Turner or Smyly. I’m guessing Turner, obviously. But I think Smyly has passed Oliver.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
This probably sounds ridiculous, but I enjoy telling other people things like “let me talk to my lawyer” or “I know a guy.”
October 5th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
Ok guys, I made the first Cabrera alcohol joke. The rest of you are frauds.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
I wish someone who actually liked baseball and didn’t just like the Yankees wrote this post.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
Save for the random guy who came up at 19 or 20 years old (Felix, Justin Upton), all free agents are past their prime. That’s just the nature of the sport.

SC – I highly doubt Hamels is going to be on that list during this offseason. He’s going to get a nice contract bump with Lidge and Raul gone. Not Cliff Lee money, but maybe a 5/100 mil contract.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
The issue is that the Yanks will give them a 5-7 year premium deal for maybe 2 or 3 years of solid production.

it’s funny because you come to this website every day, and can’t help it, but this is true for almost every sport that gets covered here by almost every writer.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
Chris Young for BJ would be interesting. See what the brothers could do together. Young and Upton put up very similar stats.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
Cain would be toast in Yankee Stadium, a flyball pitcher who somehow miraciously has the ability to keep flyballs from turning into HRs? The king of low BABIP and a declining K rate as well. That would not fly well in Yankee stadium.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
He’s obviously fucked up and deserves some scorn, but he’s handled himself like a grown man and professional this season with all of that. Like Josh Hamilton last year, he didn’t actively participate in the Tigers’ alochol-filled celebration after clinching the division. He sat on a couch and drank water while they acted like boys.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
Agree, locked in for several more years with Tex until ’16 and Arod until ’18, Jeter for 3 more. In 3-4 years those could be terrible contracts to be stuck with. Going to have to fill outfield with some younger players, lock up Cano.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
Right. And going from the NL West to the AL West would not be kind. It usually only works well the other way around (Ian Kennedy).

October 5th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
NDub, I mean, it’s just a joke. I like Miggy just fine.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
Cain’s K-rate was up this season. If he were my #2 or #3 starter, I’d have no complaints. CC is the ace.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:41 AM

I just forwarded this list to Bill Smith under the assumption he didn’t know this.

October 5th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
Also when TBL writes about basketball. I dont give a shit, but he seems to know that sport the best.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:44 AM

Maybe you should get over your man-lust for Miguel Cabrera and stop policing the comments section.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
Every pitcher is going to see their numbers balloon a little in the Bronx. The Yankees still have an offense that includes Cano, Tex, Granderson, Montero and Gardner for the foreseeable future. Opposing pitchers have to face that. Two way street.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
They’re gonna have to pay him again, b/c he’s gonna opt out this offseason.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
SC – K/9 was up marginally to 7.27, however K% was 19.7% which was down from 19.8% from year before. He did face 9 more batters this year though, so it’s a wash.

I have a feeling CC is headed West. I would not be surprised to see him on the Angels.
October 5th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
Cain did better with the K’s and getting groundballs, but his HR/FB was crazy low which I would think would be in part to having a cavernous RF at AT&T. Good chance the ERA would be higher pitching in one of the easiest RF to hit HRs in at Yankee Stadium. Unless he sucks next year or gets seriously injured, I’d find it hard to see the Giants letting him hit free agency anyways.
