Wonder if Peyton Hillis and DeSean Jackson Are Struggling Because Their Next Contract is On Their Mind?

Peyton Hillis was an NFL breakout star in 2010: 1,177 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns. The Browns looked brilliant in heisting him from Denver for Brady Quinn. And now, the problem with Hillis: Due to the NFL lockout, Hillis couldn’t get a deal done, and despite a career-making 2010 season, he’s only making a paltry $600,000 in 2011.
In a perfect world, Hillis would have parlayed his 2010 campaign into big bucks. But now he’s got to duplicate those numbers in 2011 while avoiding injury.
DeSean Jackson is in the same boat: Ridiculous stats – in 2009 and 2010 – but he’s only making $769k. (Some argue Jackson isn’t worth big bucks; obviously, not everyone agrees.) This list of every receiver who makes more than Jackson will certainly leave you shaking your head.
But Hillis and Jackson are both struggling in 2011. Hillis has rushed for just 197 yards and two scores. He missed a game two weeks ago due to illness – on gameday, Hillis reportedly had a temperate of 103 and the illness caused him to lose 10 pounds – but now there are whispers in the locker room that maybe Hillis missed the game because the contract situation is in his head. Last week against Tennessee, Hillis had just 10 carries and Colt McCoy threw a franchise-record 61 passes.
Jackson’s 2011 stats (16 catches, 324 yards, one TD) are nowhere near what he did the last two years. He’s not stretching the defense and he’s not going over the middle as much (two concussions could be a reason). Think Jackson’s playing it safe, how he can stay healthy, and then get a lucrative contract next year?
So instead of trying to blow up and explode in hopes of landing a massive contract (think Cedric Benson and Miles Austin last year), Hillis and Jackson almost seem to be … coasting, in hopes of using their 2010 stats to land a new deal. If the Browns try to lowball Hillis, I’m sure he’ll have plenty of suitors. Jackson’s a more difficult situation to peg, since he won’t fit into every offense, and at 5-10, 175, he obviously isn’t a No. 1 receiver.

Is TBL coasting on his blog posts, not blowing any of his actual writing talent, in hopes that FSV gives him a lucrative new contract? True he had a temperature of 103, had an IV in and was crapping out of both ends on the last post he wrote about the lack of a salary cap in the MLB, but whispers from others say he actually submitted the post from his blackberry on a Caribbean beach.

I wouldn’t worry about Hillis…one doesn’t lose 10-15 pounds and have a 103 fever because their “contract issue is in his head”.
Last week his strength was sapped, and they were playing from behind nearly the whole game. He’ll be fine.

Jackson’s pro rated yds and catches are on pace to be better than any other year and his yds per catch is still 20.5
/just sayin’

You’re reaching TBL.
Jackson is averaging 4 catches a game at about 20 ypc, which is pretty in line with his career averages. The TDs will come in bunches.
Hillis has essentially not been apart of 2 games because of illness and Colt being pass happy. I would blame his “struggles” on those things.

Peyton Hillis has too much integrity for that.

Hillis is struggling because the Browns fucking suck.

Got back from fishing to see that I missed a hockey post? Oh well, whoever said the Avs were the worst team in the league is retarded.

Vlad – What were you fishing for? I was tempted to get out this evening, but this whole father thing kept me home playing football with the boy. I could have taken him fishing with me, but taking a five year old fishing would mean a lot of me not fishing and dealing with worms and knots and, “yes, Mason. You can go chase that frog.” The weather is awesome here. I may get out tomorrow after work as the boy and wife have other obligations.

(ridiculous) 2010 stats thru 4 games: 16 catches, 337 yards, 21 ypc and 2 Tds. Clearly struggling,

Is Jackson actually having an off year? He’s had one shitty fantasy week but rebounded nicely this past week.

Smallmouths? I’ve never been pike fishing. There are walleye down here. One of these days, I’m heading up that direction for a week of pike and muskie fishing.

The saga took another twist Sunday in pregame television shows when Adam Schefter of ESPN announced some unnamed Browns believe Hillis’ unsettled contract situation might have contributed to the running back’s decision not to play against the Dolphins on Sept. 25.
Sounds credible.

Adam Schefter’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this girl who’s going with the Browns player who saw Peyton Hillis complaining about his contract at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it’s pretty serious.

I thought it was Adam Schefter’s cousin’s boyfriend’s sister’s brother who was dating the Browns player, hence the secrecy of the source. The same guy noticed that DeSean’s season has been total crap this year

Peyton Hillis was a creation of the liberal media who desperately wanted a white RB to succeed.
