Papelbon Blows Save, Longoria Goes Yard Within Minutes: Tampa Bay In, Boston Out of the Playoffs
With the AL Wildcard in the balance, Boston held on to a tenuous lead most of the night, squandering opportunities to score to extend it late. Tampa Bay trailed by 7-0 at one point, and it looked like Boston would survive their disastrous September. Tampa Bay came all the way back to tie it with 6 runs in the bottom of the 8th, and the tying run in the 9th to go to extra innings versus the Yankees.
Still, the Rays were in the top of the 12th, with Yankees having runners on the corners, while the Red Sox went to the bottom of the 9th with a one run lead. It still looked like Boston would, at worst, get a playoff. Papelbon got the first two outs (while the Rays got out of the top of the inning without giving up a run) then the Orioles got back to back doubles to tie it, followed by Robert Andino’s game winning single.
Three minutes later, Evan Longoria, who earlier hit a three run homer to help the rally, went ahead and cut Boston’s still fresh wound wide open with a dramatic home run inside the left field foul pole to send Tampa Bay to the playoffs. Stunning.

Sox didn’t deserve to be in after the September they had. I’m pissed they didn’t make it but I am glad for this shitshow to be over with.

I’m glad I wasn’t watching it. It was still painful listening to it in the car but I might have thrown stuff if I had been home.

CRM: I’m not one to tell you how to do your job, but man, you have got to add the Braves completely blowing themselves out of the playoffs. It adds context to how crazy, stupid, and awesome this night was.

This probably won’t get me back to loving baseball, but damn it was a fun and exciting night.
September 29th, 2011 at 12:47 AM
Probably the best night of baseball I’ve witnessed in a long time, if not ever. Only thing comparable to tonight is probably an NCAA Tournament night when the games are just crazy in succession.

I hope the Cardinals lose in the same fashion as the Heat or Canucks. It would make my year.
Boston returning to the Heimlich capital of the country has made my day though. Yes! You all deserve every last bit of it! Pink Hat Nation! clapclap clap clap clap
And Go Yankees. Anyone but Detroit. New York deserves this. Detroit is the new Cleveland.

I don’t see it happening. Health concerns plus a locker room cancer and delusional about what money he should be getting? Fuck it. Red Sox already have too much money tied up in other liabilities (Lackey and Crawford)

“What do you expect my reaction to be?” – Jonathan Papelbon
Jon boy, I want you to cry on live television. That’s what I want. And then, I want you to have a tantrum. Then, I want that tantrum on YouTube and NESN’s landing page. That’s what I want, Jon. Make it happen.

Hmm..I didn’t think the Bears and Bulls gave up that title…
September 29th, 2011 at 12:56 AM
Seriously yankee fans, you’re delusional if you think the yankees will win the world series. Unless each starting pitcher goes 7 innings to go right to Robertson and Mo, good fucking luck.

Hey, where do we want to start the parade? Should we get FDNY? I feel like they should be involved. Even if they don’t win. Someone needs to put out the fire in Boston.

September 29th, 2011 at 1:00 AM
All this means another Steve Bartman documentary ten years from now will be hijacked by what happened to the Red Sox tonight.
September 29th, 2011 at 1:00 AM
I believe Francona’s contract is up, so he won’t technically be fired.
September 29th, 2011 at 1:00 AM
No. I put little blame on him for all this. He can’t control people getting injured, being hamstrung with bad contract players, 99% of the pitchers failing, etc. The blame is mostly on the players and on Theo for some personnel decisions that have been second guessed since before the season started. Tito may resign but I don’t think ownership want to fire him.
September 29th, 2011 at 1:01 AM
Fuck no. But I’m telling you right now, Epstein ain’t inviting Lackey and Crawful over for the weekly guitar hero and trivia parties for a LONG time.
September 29th, 2011 at 1:01 AM
there are two club options on the deal but no decision had been made on it this season.

“Evan Longoria and his cheap homerun over a short wall”
Being his second one of the night, as well as the run that propelled them into the post-season, I guess it will have to do.
Anytime the Sawx and Notre Dame lose out in the same weekend, it’s like an extra Christmas for me. Let’s go, “whoever-is-playing-Notre-Dame-this-week”.
