Ben Wallace Arrested For Drunk Driving, Plus He Was Carrying a Weapon Without a Permit
Ben Wallace, the veteran center of the Detroit Pistons, was arrested over the weekend and charged with drunk driving, but that’s not even the most serious charge: when police searched Wallace’s 2007 Cadillac Escalade, they found an unloaded pistol in the backpack.
Oops. According to Fox Detroit:
He is charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle (93-day misdeamor) while Intoxicated and Unlawful Carrying of a Concealed Weapon (5-year felony).
Wallace, who turned 37 in September, is set to make $2.246 million next season – assuming there is a season.

93 days for driving a car? rather harsh.

Looks like Ray Murda was right: athletes will turn to crime during a lockout.
September 29th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
why does a 6’9″ freak of nature need a gun to feel safe? who in their right mind would fuck with someone that big?
September 29th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
ironic how the NBA is in full implosion mode at the same time MLB is killing it.
is the NHL passing NBA this year for 3rd most popular sport?

No excuses for Big Ben. It’s not like he was near downtown. Bloomfield is miles away to the northwest. Probably close to Trustfund Duffy’s parents mansion full of butlers named Bitterman and Farnsworth.
September 29th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
John Paxson giving him $60M over 4 is a much worse crime.
September 29th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
Must have thought he was in Ohio. you know, since the idiot voters allowed guns to be in bars
September 29th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
That’s the thing, it’d be some crazy fuck who’s not in their right mind.
September 29th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
Yeah, no need to be strapped up in Bloomfield.
September 29th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
golf is, judging by the ratings. stanley cup game 6 got a 3.9, final round of the masters 10.4 (down from 12.0 in 2010) and 5.1 final round of US Open (similar blowout to stanley cup). even the pga got a 4.3 with two unknowns battling it out.
September 29th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
So do we just lump NFL/NCAAF into the one spot? Because otherwise baseball is the third most popular sport and the NHL is fighting Golf for 4th.

Birmingham on the other hand…..
September 29th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
Haha, I’d love to see TBL’s face right now
September 29th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
no staunch defense of Ben Wallace carrying w/o a permit from TBL like Plax got?
September 29th, 2011 at 10:55 AM

given the highest populated areas of america are baseball and not CFB cities, i’d say baseball is more popular than CFB.
but i think you could lump the two together and no one would fight it.

Hockey is a niche sport. I’ve come to terms with it.

In the US as a whole, no question. Different story up hurr.
September 29th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
yea, but the problem is, baseball’s only strong in a few of those markets. CFB is stronger everywhere else…esp highly populated states like florida and texas.
September 29th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
Different people are entertained by different things. I’d rather listen to Spencer’s stories about golf than have another which sport is more popular debate.
Unless you guys want to talk about hockey. Because I’ll talk about hockey if you guys want to talk about hockey. Do you want to talk about hockey? I want to talk about hockey.
Hockey.

“Hmmmm, I don’t see the ‘Any’ key.”
September 29th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
NY, Boston, Philly, Baltimore/DC, Chicago.. those are pretty big markets to be winning
September 29th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
he was right by the cops station. it is right at that intersection.
September 29th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
Geez – Hockey.

Kind of wondered that too. Not even a dismissive reference to Plaxico or the gun laws in general.
Ben Wallace should have played muscle on The Wire.

true… but i would argue that CFB doesn’t have tenured stars; the turnover is too quick. sure, most people that are CFB fans cheer for a school and not a particular player, but guys baseball (and other professional sports) have iconic figures who create an additional fan base outside of your typical “team” fans. it’s damn near impossible to achieve that status in 4 years or less.
September 29th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
chicago is a hub for buckeyes, spartans, wolverines, badgers and the fightin’ irish. lets call that one a draw.
then again…atlanta, miami, tampa/st pete, dallas, and houston aren’t exactly small markets and all of those are CFB winning.
September 29th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
You’re forgetting San Fran in this as well.
September 29th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
please…you already mentioned how bs your argument is right in the bolded section. im sure there are just as many michigan fans from the helmets and texas fans who like burnt orange memorabilia as dimaggio or mantle fans that like the yankees just because of that player.
September 29th, 2011 at 11:08 AM

According to Grantland there is a provision in new CBA that will give each team one amensty on a contract and it will not go against cap.
Bye Bye Boozer
September 29th, 2011 at 11:08 AM

Take Miami out of there and I would agree with you. Miami isn’t any kind of sports market.
September 29th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
and you’re forgetting the fifteen or so mid-markets that couldn’t give three shits less about baseball that can fill 80k seat stadiums.
sure nebraska isn’t a major market, but they seem to get attention. same with penn state and oklahoma and LSU and alabama and wisconsin.
this is pointless though. sorry i carried the argument this far.
September 29th, 2011 at 11:10 AM

Come on spence, we all know there will be empty seats in Madison this Saturday.

no chance… who are you, mark may? maybe younger generations cheer for teams because of their uniforms, but not older ones.
September 29th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
maybe younger generations cheer for teams because of their uniforms, but not older ones.
WHAT?! How do you explain Notre Dame’s huge fan base (especially among old people)? Are they all big Crist fans?
September 29th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
same with penn state and oklahoma and LSU and alabama and wisconsin.
these schools fill 80k+ stadiums once a week with students and the majority of their state’s population. larger baseball markets put 25k+ a night with diverse crowds.
September 29th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
speaking of younger generations…they sure as hell don’t watch much baseball.
September 29th, 2011 at 11:17 AM
speaking of younger generations…they sure as hell don’t watch much baseball.
they don’t watch anything, except their (insert video game) character running around for 8+ hours/day.
September 29th, 2011 at 11:19 AM
true story.
so…golf?
September 29th, 2011 at 11:19 AM
You have a source for that? Because I sure as hell know plenty of my brother’s friends watch baseball. (SSS)
September 29th, 2011 at 11:23 AM
so…golf?
it won’t stop raining and it’s making me cranky. i almost talked myself into buying irons last night, but i’m going to hold off until i hit them.
i may mix my bag with the MP 33 5-PW, and keep my 3-4 MP 60s.
September 29th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
yep.
September 29th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
can i suggest the mp67′s? been playing em for about 6 weeks now and they’re BUTTER plus they share the cut muscle with your mp60′s.
but damn…mp33′s look SO good.
September 29th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
and yes im getting pissed off too at this bullshit weather.
i asked my boss if i could transfer to jacksonville for the winter…she said, yea. god damn i need to do this.
September 29th, 2011 at 11:31 AM
Been mid-high 80′s here all week. Unseasonably warm. 70′s and 80′s all next week too.
September 29th, 2011 at 11:31 AM
dick.
September 29th, 2011 at 11:33 AM
mp67′s
i’ve read mixed reviews on the 67, 68, 69s… there isn’t that much difference b/t ‘em, but everyone agrees that the 33s are the best shot-shaping of the bunch (and the hardest to hit other than the older 30 and 32 models).
are you saying to go with the 33s and the 67s? i’d rather not have to purchase two separate sets of irons to mix the bag, and i already have the 60s.
September 29th, 2011 at 11:34 AM
We just had another monsoon roll through about 20 minutes ago. I haven’t golfed since early August…fuck you rain!
September 29th, 2011 at 11:35 AM
transfer to jacksonville for the winter
from Ohio to FL? that’s like the perfect storm of white trash.
September 29th, 2011 at 11:37 AM
I thought I read somewhere that Wallace was going to law school. He’s going to have a good time disclosing this as part of his character and fitness review if/when he sits for the bar exam.
September 29th, 2011 at 11:37 AM
im saying go w the 67′s over the 33′s. something like 6-pw mp67 and 3-5 mp60. the 67′s can shape it pretty well and they seem extremely forgiving for a blade.
September 29th, 2011 at 11:38 AM
im pretty close as it is, so why not take the plunge?
September 29th, 2011 at 11:42 AM
if it’s raining this weekend i’m just going to find a golf store and try and hit as many mizuno models as possible and figure out what i want.
either way, i need to reshaft my irons (from S300 to X100). i’m not doing that until the “off-season” though.
September 29th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
did you have x in your driver and hybrid? regardless, you’ve got the swing speed for x100′s easy.
