Todd Haley Replacement Chatter in Kansas City: Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz?
Todd Haley’s first year as head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2009 went about as poorly as you might imagine: 4-12. Nobody really blamed Haley, though – let the record show he inherited a young team that compiled the worst record in franchise history, 2-14, under Herman Edwards. But in Haley’s second year, everyone fell in love with the fiery coach because he got the Chiefs to the playoffs for the first time since 2006.
Three games into Haley’s third year in Kansas City and everyone’s starting to realize maybe that playoff appearance was a mix of Charlie Weis calling the plays, a favorable schedule, and some luck (turnover margin +9, tied for fifth in the league). Year three in the Haley era: Zero wins, last in scoring offense, last in scoring defense, best defensive player out for the year, best offensive player out for the year … shall I go on?
These are tough times in KC, and while nobody’s talking about firing Todd Haley – though Edwards was jettisoned after year three – Kent Babb, who covers the Chiefs for the KC Star, was batting around some potential replacement names for Haley Sunday night and this one seemed interesting: Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz.
Ferentz is a midwesterner who has been the Hawkeyes’ coach since 1998, but before that, he dabbled in the NFL (under Belichick in Cleveland, and then in Baltimore). Ferentz’s name always comes up for elite college football openings, but best I can tell, he’s never seriously entertained any offers. He was rumored to be in the mix for the Houston Texans’ job in 2006 (it went to Gary Kubiak), but at the time, John Clayton of ESPN reported that Ferentz wouldn’t go anywhere “without a personnel guy” … which leads us to Scott Pioli, who is currently the GM of the Chiefs.
Pioli has had an up-and-down few years since arriving in 2009. Ten days after getting hired, he canned Edwards and then hired Haley, who had zero previous head coaching experience, but had just guided the Cardinals’ offense to the Super Bowl. Pioli traded fan favorite Tony Gonzalez to Atlanta – in hindsight, not a wise move. Pioli’s biggest blunder was giving Matt Cassel $42 million (sidenote: Babb thinks Pioli is so smitten with Cassel, and the franchise is so committed to their QB, they might not draft Stanford’s Andrew Luck). Pioli did strike gold with Charlie Weis, though (but he left after one season, maybe because of friction with Haley, but probably because of his ties to Florida).
The Pioli-Ferentz connection will be drawn because both have a history and both are connected to Bill Belichick. Pioli drafted Ferentz’s QB last year, Rick Stanzi. When he was with the Patriots, Pioli hired Ferentz’s son as a scouting assistant.
Then again, Pioli and Haley have a history, too (both were briefly in NY with the Jets). Haley’s in year three of a four year deal. Obviously, he’ll try to secure an extension this offseason. Will Pioli give it to him, or make a run at Ferentz?

I don’t understand here. The Chiefs were MAYBE expected to win 6 games last year and not even sniff the playoffs. This year with those injuries mentioned above they should probably get back to the 4 wins they got in the first year. Firing Haley isn’t the answer here.

Jesus. He had better be tapping that ass three times a day if he’s going to give their relationship a fucking nickname.

ritty…yea, i found that out on the nationwide tour’s site. ill check it out…bring a sign so i can pick you out of the crowd.
September 28th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
Was a very wise move because Gonzalez wanted out anyway. Might as well get something for him. They ended up with a 2nd round pick, however, wasted it on Javier Arenas.
September 28th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
The Chiefs were MAYBE expected to win 6 games last year and not even sniff the playoffs.
The Chiefs last year were the Miami Dolphins from a few years ago. They weren’t really that good, but a few bounces and the schedule went their way and they ended up with a home playoff game in which they got throttled.

September 28th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
what is Cassel’s contract like? When does the guaranteed money end, and when can they cut him w/o much loss financially?
September 28th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
I wonder if there is even TV coverage. Last year they only did live interviews. Last year I sat in the “VIP” box on the 18th green with two of my friends and got drunk. Nobody goes out and watches these guys. It’s kind of sad.

there’s a streaming feed i found…didn’t look for the coverage, but there might be some at like 12am or some shit.
i know…and these guys are fucking GOOD too. nationwide tour’s pretty stacked and the guys are hungry as hell trying to get to the tour. it’s good shit.
September 28th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
alternative – give the guy an extension. he’s really catching heat for playing his TE late in a preseason game and losing him to injury.
Haley seems better suited to be an off-coordinator. Without Weis, that offense is a train wreck
September 28th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
Todd Haley’s hasn’t proven much as a head coach in the NFL. Most Chiefs fans don’t really care for his tactics. Still, they won’t be hiring Kirk Ferentz. Floating Kirk Ferentz’s name for an NFL job is lazy rumor mongering. He’s been at Iowa for a collective 20 years. His family lives there. He has kids still in school. His son just moved back there.
The Iowa Hawkeyes aren’t similar to the Pittsburgh Steelers in just colors. They retain their coaches for a long duration for a reason.
September 28th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
This is hilarious. Please tell me Kirk gets another raise out of Iowa after this all settles down. Jimmy Sexton approves.
September 28th, 2011 at 10:45 AM

i know…and these guys are fucking GOOD too. nationwide tour’s pretty stacked and the guys are hungry as hell trying to get to the tour. it’s good shit.
Do they do anything to get the fans out there? A la minor league baseball? Or are these tournaments just as “serious” as most of the PGA events?
September 28th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
Ferentz just does this crap to get a raise. must need to pay the Iowa City PD more hush money.
September 28th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
Absolutely. Weis was the hamburger grease that made the offensive wheels turn last year.
September 28th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
One of my buddies here knows a Tour player. He plays some PGA events and some Nationwide. He played in this event last year, went out to the bar every night, made the cut, then finished dead last. Won like $1200. I asked him how his caddy felt about that. He said he pays his caddy a minimum of $1200 every tournament so essentially he (the player) lost money coming out here.
September 28th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
He has a lifetime contract already.
September 28th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
SC – did you click any of the links about Pioli-Ferentz? or read the part about Pioli hiring Ferentz’s son in NE?
this all sprung from a tweet of the guy covering the Chiefs.
September 28th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
Given all the chances that Ferentz has had to jump in the past and didn’t, I feel like that this ship has sailed. Ferentz will be at Iowa for many years to come, IMO.
September 28th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
Ferentz has it made at Iowa. He’s a top ten paid coach with has one BCS win (against an ACC school) and 0 expectations. Plus all the drug dealers on his teams and almost killing the players during offseason workouts? The dude is Teflon and he’d be a fool to give that up.
September 28th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
There are tons of sponsors and charities involved and stuff like that. People will go on Thursday and then after that, it gets thin. We don’t have many members to begin with so even when a bunch of us go out there, it’s not like we make up a hefty crew of spectators. But no, it isn’t like a minor league baseball game at all.
September 28th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
i mean, what would you suggest?
they’re serious tournaments tho…it’s a pool of young players and journeymen who’ve had cups of coffee on tour trying to get to the major leagues. the nationwide guys don’t make tons of money (travel and lodging is expensive) so it’s extremely cutthroat.
September 28th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
We’ll really know it’s Jimmy Sexton bullshit when Houston Nutt throws his hat into the ring.
September 28th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
Andy Reid would love this. He wouldn’t be the worst clock manager in the NFL anymore.

//Last year’d
September 28th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
i mean, what would you suggest?
I’m thinking Happy Gilmore. I don’t see how that could go wrong.
September 28th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
im sure he got some money from his equipment deals, but yea…ive heard the nationwide tour is a serious grind.
September 28th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
Winner out here gets like $99k so that isn’t bad.
The Tour guy I know had a top-10 at the Honda (PGA) last year so that bankrolled him for the rest of the year.
September 28th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
i mean, shit shooter, the dallas stop is sold out already!
September 28th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
It’s lazy, TBL. The Chiefs beat writer need something to talk about because the team he covers is currently missing its two best players and a slew of other players to injury. There’s heat under Haley’s seat. OK, he might get canned. Is that the right move? I don’t know. What I do know is that Kirk Ferentz’s name has been floated for every NFL opening in the last 5-7 years and he’s taken none of them. He’s remained with the Hawkeyes.
He may have a history with Scott Pioli but he signed a lifetime contract with Iowa just last fall. He makes plenty of money there. He’s a quiet guy who doesn’t really like the spotlight nor does he particularly care to deal with the media during times of strife. He’s in the cushiest gig in football for that personality. There are reasonable expectations at Iowa for him every year. Even when the bar is raised, like last season, and he doesn’t meet them, the fans don’t call for his head. They stand by him.
Kirk Ferentz will not leave the Iowa Hawkeyes.
September 28th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
I agree. He’s 56 years old.
Isn’t there some sort of stat on NFL Head coaches that indicates their teams don’t play as well when they reach their mid-50′s? (the implication being, that since they are older, they don’t work as hard, it’s a young man’s game, etc, etc.)
If Ferentz wanted to leave Iowa, I think he would have left already.
Picking nits….he actually went to high school in Western PA. But a significant part of his professional career has been in the mid-west.
/manager vs coach’d
September 28th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
Why, again, is Ferentz considered an NFL-caliber coach? His ultra-conservative style? Poor clock management?
September 28th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
Do they do anything to get the fans out there? A la minor league baseball? Or are these tournaments just as “serious” as most of the PGA events?
a ggreat idea is born. half the fans or more at minor league games are there for family fun, the mascots, the music, the promotional things between innings….wise up Nationwide Tour and ghet yourself a t-shirt-shooting mascot

yeah, they used to have a Nationwide tour even down in Jort Shit, about an hour south of here but couldn’t renew it this year after 13 years because of lack of sponsorship. sucks too, they have had some decent past winners (T. Clarke & Zack Johnson).
I would think that with the PGA being done they will have some coverage, at least on golf channel.
September 28th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
Because he comes from the Belichick tree. A tree that has produced little fruit in terms of successful NFL head coaches. That’s about it.
September 28th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
True, no one else would want to coach in that god forsaken state.

September 28th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
she seems delightfully trashy.
September 28th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
but even $99k for winnings isn’t that much if you’re not consistent. travel/lodging/entry fees for a year can easily exceed $50k and that’s not even taking into account the caddy.
September 28th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
You want to find me a legitimate source (Marc Morehouse, Mike Hlas, Randy Peterson) that had any inkling that Ferentz would be on the hot seat coming into 2011-12, Big Hoss? Go ahead. Google away.

He’s a less successful version of Nick Saban. And Saban flamed out in the NFL. Don’t understand it either.
September 28th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
If Gary Barta leaves Iowa, then you can maybe start to float rumors of KF wanting to scoot out of Iowa City. Even that’s a longshot. Until then, he’ll keep taking the Hawkeyes to bowl games, winning the occasional conference title and go to a BCS game every 4-6 years.
September 28th, 2011 at 11:03 AM

September 28th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
I’m sure the NCAA is putting it right next to the Julio Jones new suits file, in the special Alabama file that only gets looked at every 12 years or so.
September 28th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
seriously…ferentz has one of those jobs where he can just show up, sit around with his dick in his hand and make $3.5mm. why would you leave that for actual professional pressure?
September 28th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
They are as bad as any SEC team in recent memory. They look like some of the old Vandy teams that had no business playing in the SEC. It baffles me that Ole Miss doesn’t have any talent on their roster. I’m not saying they should win 9-10 games, but they should be competitive against SEC teams. UGAs defense isn’t the 85 bears, but the managed only 180 total yards (and that was with a razzle-dazzle trick play for 40.
September 28th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
What is Jort Shit?
Yeah, we’ve had some good winners out here too. Hoffman, Snedeker, Campbell. The big bombers have a field day if they can make putts. Tournament tees are like 7300 yds. Greens are fairly flat, but firm and fast as shit. Biggest obstacles are usually the wind and the gunch (OB areas and rattlesnake havens that border the rough on every hole)

what’s funnier is that Mississippi puts out some decent recruits as a state and Nutt can’t get any of them. Mullen must be just running roughshod through that state with the recruits. he won’t even call it ole piss, he calls it the school up north. hilarious.
September 28th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
their athletic department budget is on par with Vandy’s. they shouldn’t be expected to compete any better than Vandy.
September 28th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
I wish because Daly might be in my all-time fivesome. Speaking of, just missed a chance to play right behind Pres. Bush at the beginning of the summer. He was in town and played out there on a Friday. My normal Friday tee time went off right after his but I had to actually work that day. They all got a picture with him, got to bullshit a little bit. Everyone who has played with him says he’s got good bullshit which is pretty much all you need on the golf course as far as I’m concerned.
September 28th, 2011 at 11:10 AM

If this is true than why is their offense so shitty right now (even before the Charles injury)…
September 28th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
You mean twice….ever
Occasional = 2x in 12 years
September 28th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
That’s not what you said. You said when he doesn’t meet the bar, fans stand by him and don’t call for his head. And that’s just not true, period. Whether he’s on the hot seat and whether fans “stand by him” are two different issues.
Ferentz is not anywhere near the hot seat. He isn’t, never has been, and I’ve never heard a legitimate source suggest that he was or should be.
But I’ve NEVER seen an Iowa loss to anyone, under any circumstances, in which Iowa fans didn’t take to the message boards and sports talk radio absolutely lighting Ferentz up, and most times suggesting perhaps it’s time he move on.
September 28th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
I’ll repost this if the Chiefs end up with the No. 1 pick. coaches will be tripping over themselves to get to KC to coach Luck, Charles, Bowe.

well…so much for this thread. fucking baseball…
September 28th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
Looks nice. And $200 a month is nothing as far as decent courses go. Is there an initiation fee? Semi-private though? What’s it like getting a tee time? And what’s the speed of play like?
I’m spoiled here though I pay dearly for it. 80% of the members are in the oil business which means most of them only work 1/2 days on Fridays, then go to the course. It’s busy on Friday from 1-3 when the big money games go off. Otherwise it’s easy getting a tee time. Just one other thing to consider.
September 28th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
AWW! I wonder how that baby got up there…
September 28th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
what is the going rate for clubs around there? is $200 pretty reasonable? the place I have been talking about joining is right around $200/month. after spending well over $300/month this summer it is starting to seem more reasonable. it’s the winter months that kill me.
September 28th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
no initiation fee and the tee times are pretty available. id probably play most of my rounds later in the day during the week after work and really take advantage of the awesome practice facilities. speed of play has never been an issue whenever ive gone there.
September 28th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
Stonewater is incredible. That’s a damn good deal
September 28th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
How long have you been a member there, Ritty? I think someone I knew in college (Scott Stewart) was head tennis pro there. Not sure if he still is.
September 28th, 2011 at 11:26 AM
He tries to do too much. His first year he fired Chan Gailey a week before the regular season started and their offense was horrible. If he were just the OC he’d have less on his plate and would be able to focus on just offense.
September 28th, 2011 at 11:26 AM
going rate depends on where the course is. the big ones in the suburbs are still $10k+, but some of the CC’s that require a lil bit of a drive are around $200-300.
the winter is what’s making me hesitant…$200/mo for four months of ungolfable weather.
September 28th, 2011 at 11:27 AM
I’ve been out here for 4 years, been a member there for 3. Don’t know any of the tennis people. They just replaced a guy a year or so ago under suspicious circumstances or something. That name doesn’t sound familiar though.
September 28th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
I think my friends are members here at Sawgrass for $2500/year. they only get two rounds per year on the stadium course, but can play any time on the other course (which they say is nice too).
September 28th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
oh yea. the back 9 gets my panties wet.
September 28th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
Cart fees and dining minimums were always the main deterrent for me at the Lawrence clubs.
September 28th, 2011 at 11:29 AM

September 28th, 2011 at 11:29 AM
Please do…and while you’re right about coaches being enthused about the job, I don’t see Ferentz as being one of them. I’d bet large amounts against it.

That really only hits us hard in Jan and Feb. But even during those months, it get up into the 50′s and sometimes 60′s and is obviously manageable out there. As much as I pay, I feel obligated to play out there as often as possible and at least take my wife to a nice dinner from time to time.
September 28th, 2011 at 11:31 AM
yeah, the place I am looking at has no dining, and cart fee’s and range balls included for $190/month. they also own several other courses where you pay cart fee’s only.

In Milwaukee.. You’d get a few golfable days in November.. but once thanksgiving rolled around, you’re pretty much shut in until March.. where there will be maybe one nice weekend.

Yeah, the biggest problem isn’t the temp as much as it is the muck you have to play in.

And it’s not really the snow… its the cold weather/frozen ground that keep you away from the golf course… even if by some fluke warm front it got up to 60 in February, which would happen every now and then, you couldn’t get out and golf. None of the courses would open.

Crazy thing here is, March can be our worst month for golf. The wind blows something awful out here. 50 mph gusts no uncommon. I’ve been playing when the flags were blowing sideways.

same in La Crosse. I don’t even think they open the courses from Nov-Feb., and usually it’s into March.

I worked at really nice course that they liked to baby in the spring.. they wouldn’t even think about opening before the first week of April, unless there was some freak heat wave at the end of March.

Spencer (from previous conversation)
My club’s name is Midland Country Club…our most famous member? George W. Bush.
I live in Odessa and trust me, George Bush spends about as much time at the Midland Country Club as Charlie Weis does at Curves Gainesville.

Ha. I’ve seen him out there twice in 3 years. Still like to brag about it.

As a Chiefs fan, I’d have to say no thanks to Ferentz. Getting a little tired of Scott Piloi’s fascination with his Patriots connections. I’m torn on Haley. Despite everything, he seems to have the players’ respect. I think the main issue may be Cassel and Haley’s lack of trust in him.

Not just out there. I played in a tournament in Plano in April one a day when the wind was averaging about 35-40 mph, and when my 6-2, 220-lb buddy was addressing his ball on one tee, a gust of wind blew him about four feet back.

Ferentz isn’t going anywhere you douche bag.
