Detroit’s Brendan Smith Hit Chicago’s Ben Smith For The NHL’s First Head-Shot Of The Season
The NHL regular season is right around the corner. Sidney Crosby is still a big question mark as his head still isn’t right. The NHL will be cracking down on hits to the head more than every this season. It looks like the first player to get in trouble is Detroit’s Brendan Smith who caught Chicago’s Ben Smith with a shoulder to the head tonight. It will be interesting to see what happens to Brendan since Ben was leaning forward.

/Boyes and Wisniewski already suspended this pre-season for hits to the head

Not a dirty hit. But I would be fine with a 2 game suspension. The player with the puck needs to take some responsibility. If he doesn’t put his head down and go inside this doesn’t happen. What’s Smith to do in a fraction of a second? His shoulder actual hit Ben Smith’s first then rode up and clocked him in the head. Might as well acquire a bunch of small forwards and get rid of your tall defensemen.

Fuck the wings

This is gut check time for Shanahan. He made Wisniewski a target by suspending him for 12 games for something that likely deserved a 1-2 game suspension and was much less violent or purposeful than this. Now it’s the Red Wings instead of the Blue Jackets. What are you going to do, Brendan?

Que? Wally, Wisniewski has been suspended 4 times since 2008, he made himself a target. He clearly hasn’t learned from previous issues, so a stiff penalty (it’s really 8 games, pre-season games are immaterial) and a kick in the wallet are the way to go.
Smith will get 4-6 games (my gut feel is 5), he’s not a repeat offender, at least at the NHL level.

He made him a target for what was a marginal shot. Wiz didn’t see Clutterbuck coming and put his arms (and stick, thus the suspension) up to knock him away. Clutterbuck had been egging him on for about 10 minutes to do something and he picked the right time. See Cal laughing on the bench about it afterwards for proof that it was a purposeful move.
But, yes, Wiz deserved a suspension, but 8 games is laughable for that. But, he’s in Columbus now, so the NHL office can do whatever without much uproar.
It is gut check time for Brendan. He has put himself out there as the enforcer. Now it is a Red Wing involved.
