Some episodes are entertaining. The episode last season where they had a challenge to see what American truck could drive across Alaska was fun. And the challenge in Death Valley this season was also entertaining. But it’s not nearly as clever or intelligent as the UK version. The jokes are more sophomoric and juvenile. And they don’t do regular segments like the UK version does. And their car reviews are borderline boring.

I give it a C+/B-.

I watched the season finale last night and then there was a rerun from earlier this season where the UK show went up against the hosts from Top Gear Australia. The anti-Australian jokes were killing me. Jeremy Clarkson arranged for the Australian hosts to be picked up at the airport in a prison van. When asked why he responded that he thought it appropriate that they return to this country in the same way that their ancestors left it.

Did you see last week where they took surplus British Army tracked maintenance vehicles and tore down an old housing development in Kent? I would pay a lot of money to get to do something like that.

Carolla’s “The Car Show” isn’t terrible. But they could use a John Salley upgrade.

Top Gear UK is quickly becoming one of my favorite shows. When they mention top speed of a car, however, they also give it in Miles Per Hour.

It’s my favorite show…and I always appreciate the mph. Those three guys actually have the best jobs in the world. I have actually had dreams where I become the 5th wheel (including The Stig) to that show.

According to the “internet”

First, there’s the end zones themselves. For the NFL, putting the goalposts at the back works just fine because the end zones are only 10 yards deep. That’s not a ton of extra distance for field goals. In Canadian football, though, the 20-yard end zone would mean teams would have to get 20 yards closer than they currently do when trying field goals. Combine that with the longer field (110 yards instead of 100 yards), and you’d significantly reduce scoring if you moved the goalposts to the back. Given that high-scoring football is one of the CFL’s chief selling points and is pivotal to attendance and television ratings, this becomes prohibitively problematic.

Moreover, the other crucial advantage of putting the goalposts at the front in the Canadian game is that it enables teams to defend against rouges (such as the one that proved to be the winning point in the Winnipeg-Toronto clash Friday). If the posts were at the back, a missed field goal would almost automatically be a rouge. With the posts at the front, teams can put players at the back of the end zone to defend against rouges, and that often leads to ridiculously entertaining plays like the Montreal-Toronto finish in November 2010. Those plays, and the strategy around them, are crucial parts of Canadian football’s history and heritage, and they shouldn’t be abandoned lightly.
