Yardwork: Jacoby Ellsbury Saves the Red Sox
Jacoby Ellsbury hit a home run with two on and two out in the 14th inning against Scott Proctor, whose baffling involvement in any kind of baseball activity remains a twisted mystery. It was Ellsbury’s third home run of the doubleheader fun in the Bronx and, given the dramatics of the circumstances, I’m sure today will feature several drooling souls on sports radio, both hosts and callers, enthusiastically trumpeting his MVP candidacy; at least when they’re not talking about John Lackey. Ellsbury’s numbers are rather ridiculous. Did he save Boston’s season? With three games in Baltimore while the Rays host the Yankees, it’s safe to say the answer is yes. The Yankees have already clinched home field advantage, so do they rest half of their lineup for the simple enjoyment of watching the Red Sox earn their place in the playoffs on their own or simply proceed business-as-usual? Whatever happens, it would be fun for all if this one ended up coming down to the final game of the season.
Nats 3, Braves 0 — A 3-0 shutout loss to the Washington Nationals in the midst of desperately trying to hold onto a playoff spot? Truly pathetic. Remember when the Cardinals allowed the Mets to score six runs in the ninth inning last week? That loss hurts considering, like the Rays, they sit just one game back of the wildcard. Atlanta hosts Philly and the Cards are on their way to Houston to beat up the Astros.
Twins 6, Indians 4, 10 innings — The Twins have 98 losses with 3 games to play. This is too good of a franchise to experience a 100-loss season. They host the Royals to close out the season, a team that frequently lives in the lonely world of 100 losses.
Rays 5, Blue Jays 2 — The Rays have Shields, Hellickson and Price set to pitch in the Bronx at home. Can they pull off a sweep?
Cards 3, Cubs 2 — Solo shots in the seventh and eighth inning from Yadier Molina and Rafael Furcal ruined what had been a pretty great start for Randy Wells. The Cards have won 9 of 12.
A’s 6, Angels 5 — The Angels blew a 3-run lead in the ninth to the A’s? That’s some Moneyball magic right there that we’ll no doubt be treated to in the sequel. The brutal loss puts the Angels three games out of the wildcard race. As C.T. once screamed during the dramatic end of a challenge, you’re done!

That might be the greatest photo in the history of the rivalry. Excellent find, Hernia.

Brewers have 3 against the Pirates to lock up home field for the NLDS… couldn’t ask for a better opponent.

+1 on the caption….

I believe this was said a week or so ago right before the Red Sox shit the bed again. In all honesty, I would rather face a yankee team resting the starters vs an Orioles team who has nothing to lose and will give it all.

Do you want to play Arizona or Atlanta?

Do you want to play Arizona or Atlanta?
Atlanta obviously… but it’s not looking like that’s going to happen. Atlanta’s got 3 against the Phillies. If they can’t beat the Nats, no chance they’re taking 2 of 3 from the Phillies. Looks like it’s going to be Phillies/Cards and Brewers/Dbacks.

MVP! MVP!
September 26th, 2011 at 11:23 AM
That photo right there pretty much encapsulates the 2011 season
September 26th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
Jacoby really needs to get the hands involved there if he’s going to have any chance at an MVP this year. You can just rely solely on the mouth to get the job done.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
Someone should have let Jacoby know Jeter has the herp before he put his mouf on that thing.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
Go Orioles.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
Phillies having to play the Cards is good for the Brewers and Diamondbacks.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
That was my thought too… I mean the Yankees delayed the game Friday early to help out the Sox and get them rest. They rested starters, and used their bullpen in a way as to give the Sox every chance to win the games (though it’s unclear if that is just a normal every game occurrence for Girardi)… and they still lost 2 of 3.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:26 AM
You can’t* just rely…
This weekend clearly took more out of me than I thought. I may need to actually get some coffee brewing here.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:26 AM

Yeah.. I’m really pissed the Brewers won’t get to play Atlanta… I would have gone to all of those games. Still considering a trip up to Milwaukee for the NLCS after they take care of DBacks and their fair-weather fans.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:27 AM
Going to be rooting really hard for the O’s. If Jacoby hadn’t hit the HR last night, I can only imagine the angst in New England had they lost. Especially with the Pats coughing up their lead against the Bills.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:29 AM
Coming from a Brewers fan. Unacceptable.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:29 AM

That would have been perfect, given that this was the week ESPN the Magazine had their “Boston Rules” cover.

Are you calling Brewers fans fair-weather? Link? The Brewers drew close to 3M last year for a team that didn’t make the playoffs. They’re over 3M this year. Did the D-backs even get 2M this year for a division winner?
September 26th, 2011 at 11:32 AM
You two talk, and all I hear is “blah blah blah I’m a dirty troll”
September 26th, 2011 at 11:33 AM
I think JPQ needs to be freed for today. Having the #1 Bills fan back for a victory Monday would be nice to see.
And ban all the Packer fans. Already hearing callers on WTMJ and their 16-0 rally cries. Even Patriot fans didn’t have this kind of ego on them 4 years ago.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:33 AM
You two talk, and all I hear is “blah blah blah I’m a dirty troll”
It’s not trolling if it’s factual. ESPN the Magazine blew its wad all over Charlestown this week. Serves them right.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:34 AM
The last two weeks is the most frustrated I’ve ever been with a team. Even the guys like Lester/Bard/Paps are blowing important games. It’s just prolonged misery. And every stupid fucking Pete Abraham or Dan Shaughnessy gleefully describing the fall of the Sox, just adds to it. That and every idiot saying “this is the win that turns the team around” right before another 4 game losing streak.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:35 AM
And how many of that 3M did you make up? Congrats the Brewers were supposed to compete. I am sure the Brewers would get that many fans after back to back 90 loss seasons.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:35 AM
Nah. I didn’t use Pink Hat Nation in there. That’s genuine sentiment, brah. I’ll be rooting for the Orioles. And the Patriots coughed up a 2 score lead. Facts.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:36 AM
don’t sleep on the angels
September 26th, 2011 at 11:36 AM
Well that’s an ESPN problem… of which they have many. I was more annoyed with the Fox postseason promos for the ALCS with Rangers/Sox/Yanks/Tigers players. All the sudden late last night I saw one with a Ray thrown in the very back.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:37 AM
And how many of that 3M did you make up?
3. And I live 800 miles away. I don’t see how my attendance has anything to do with it though. Since Antanasio bought the team they’ve consistently outdrawn teams from much larger markets like Atlanta, Phoenix, the White Sox, etc. etc. I’ve never heard anyone accusing Brewers fans of being fair weather.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:39 AM

*And they’ve only made the Playoffs once in that stretch
September 26th, 2011 at 11:39 AM
I’m already snoring.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
2? or 3? I got 4 tickets to the Titans game, so I was at that crapfest with no phone service, and I missed the entire game except the final FG (which was a mistake not to let them score because then the Bills realized it was a good idea to kneel and not give the ball back).
I do feel kind of good for Bills fans though… no ill will to that team, and was really glad they gave Fitzpatrick a full year. Of course, if they kept him just to get Luck, and now he’s good enough for 8-8 and bad enough to not make the playoffs the next four years, plus they’ll have to overpay him, that’s rough. The Bills can’t even tank efficiently.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
Agreed it’s a shitty organization, but I thought the discussion was about fan support?
September 26th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
at least they are trying to promote more than just the red sox and yankees???
for as much as they probably complain about lousy ratings when the big teams aren’t in the playoffs, they do a shitty job trying to promote the other teams.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
Maybe because it’s been raining the last 20 years.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
Agreed it’s a shitty organization, but I thought the discussion was about fan support?
Well it was a shitty organization, but it’s not anymore,… and the discussion is about fan support, of which the Brewers have had enormous amount. SO… I don’t see what you’re point is.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
Who said this? Their tragic number is 1
September 26th, 2011 at 11:42 AM
YYSA – It’s a place where they can all congregate, drink openly in public and wear their moo-moos and/or camo gear together. That’s why Miller Park has attendance. That’s Valhalla for Wisconsinites.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:42 AM
You want to engage on the internet and this is what happens.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:43 AM
Yeah I got nothing but love for the Bills and their fans. Have a good friend from school who’s a Bills fan, was happy for him yesterday.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:43 AM

Coming from a pseudo Cubs fan… that’s honestly one of the more hysterical things I’ve ever read. I’m surprised Wrigley doesn’t have bouncers, given it’s just an outdoor bar where the patrons occasionally get the chance to a watch a shitty franchise play.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
It does. They remove Brewers fans when they get too big for their pants.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
I’m anxiously looking forward to seeing 1000′s of empty seats for a day playoff game in Phoenix next week though.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
if the patriots don’t win it, i always hope the bills do. that area deserves it.
might be a mindsplosion of the lions and bills play each other though.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
I don’t really care. I look forward to the Diamondbacks sweeping another overrated NL Central team in the playoffs.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
Per Jayson Stark: Clayton Kershaw clinched the pitching triple crown yesterday (no matter what Lee does tonight). If Matt Kemp had a hot weekend (bunch of 1-4s instead) he could have gotten the hitting triple crown. Imagine if a team that shitty had two triple crown winners?
September 26th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
could the bills keep the jets out of the playoffs this year?
/assumes NE will go something like 12-1 the rest of the way
September 26th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
This is why Wisconsin fans shouldn’t be allowed to have nice things. You give them one glimmer of hope that they’re actually good at something and they think they’re the belle of the ball.
Hubris, thy name is Wisconsin.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:48 AM
Luckily that’s never been a problem for you, eh SC?
September 26th, 2011 at 11:48 AM

Things WI is better at than the neanderthals from IL:
1. College Football
2. Pro Football
3. Pro Baseball
4. College Basketball
5. Being friendly
There is no debate over any of this. Enjoy the NBA (in 2 years) and NHL I guess.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
Easily. If the Raiders can do that to the Jets yesterday, the Bills sure can.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
I’m all for Wisconsin bashing, but this is a big time stretch.
Now had you said “Hubris, thy name is Brian Kelly” I would have agreed.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
/whispers to everyone else
Does he realize he’s playing into my hands? Because if not, then this isn’t even fun anymore.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
You suck at trash talking
September 26th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
Does he realize he’s playing into my hands? Because if not, then this isn’t even fun anymore.
No SC, I had no idea you’ve been trolling. None at all.

September 26th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
so what you’re saying is mark sanchez is going to throw eight INT’s in each of their meetings?
nice.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
/prepares for when the Texas Rangers pound the shit out of the Yankee pitching staff in the ALDS
September 26th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
That would be fantastic.
It’ll be a lot of Fred Jackson pounding the ball showing the Jets what an actual running game looks like (a la McFadden and Bush yesterday) and (insert receiver here) burning up the Sperm donor for a couple touchdowns
September 26th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
Do we have any shots of Sanchez eating a hot dog on the sidelines from yesterday’s game?
September 26th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
God damn I cannot wait for LDT to retire so I never have to see that STUPID football flick TD celebration again.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
hey CJ, i saw your tweet about the baseball tiebreaker possibilities. Tampa would host a one game playoff because they took the season series from Boston
September 26th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
I was starting to wonder if some random NFL coach sent in tape to the league aon Cromartie holding on every single play. It’s like the refs finally took their blinders off and noticed.
September 26th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
He’s still on the team?

September 26th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
Ahh, thanks tj
September 26th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
If Josh Beckett implodes against the Orioles again, I will kill things.
September 26th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
Now if only they can take the patch off the other eye and look on over at Revis Prison
September 26th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
And TJ, since I havent been on WWF much… congrats on the Bills win yesterday, though I do wish it wasn’t accompanied by a Pats meltdown.
September 26th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
Ha!
September 26th, 2011 at 12:12 PM
Claims to be solitary confinement, but all I saw on the tour was a bunch of holding cells.
September 26th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
I wish the Bills could play the Jets sooner. Bills/Jets play twice in November.
September 26th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
Dont forget the anal raping
September 26th, 2011 at 12:25 PM
Okay, make up your mind on where you think the final series is going to be. Or are we that geography challenged?
(must have been a late night for you ..)
(p.s. – it’s in Tampa).
