Phantom Holding Call In Bears – Packers Game Nullifies One Of The Best Punt Returns In NFL History
The Bears lost 27-17 to the Packers today in Chicago. The Packers punted with just over a minute left in the game and the Bears attempted one of the best misdirection plays in NFL history. Knowing Green Bay would key on Devin Hester – one of the NFL’s premiere punt returners – Hester took the coverage team to the opposite side of the field like he was trying to track down the ball, and signaled for a fair catch. Meanwhile, Johnny Knox fielded the punt on the other side of the field and took it 88 yards down the sideline to the end zone.
But the return was negated because of a holding call. The flag came from the side of the field where Knox fielded the ball and no replay showed a definitive hold. As a (maybe) biased Bears’ fan asks – where the hell was the hold? The touchdown wouldn’t have won or even tied the game so it doesn’t really matter, but that flag still wiped out a very special play.
Finally, let me point out how freaking fast Devin Hester is. He ran across the field and nearly caught Knox by the time he reached the end zone. That’s insane.

Especially those who had the Bears covering the 3.5 points.
Extremely worried about that defense. I don’t know the exact numbers but it feels like they’ve given up more 20 yard plus plays in the first three games than they did all of last year. Hopefully Zombo is back soon.

After watching a bunch of games today the NFL officiating is downright horrible so far this year.
Some obvious holds not called. Ticky tack calls that shouldnt be called.
Just a bunch of crappy officiating league wide again.

Losing Nick Collins was huge, Clay Matthews appeared to be back to form today…some improvement today albeit against mediocre at best competition, Cutler was bad even with time to throw

the bears have to have the worst single group of receivers in the league, no fucking hyperbole.
knox, hester, williams, hurd, bennett, sanzenbacher, the fullback who dropped a pass, spaeth….

Some overthrows for sure, but his receivers didn’t do him any favors either. I counted like five or six drops. And yes, the Collins loss is enormous. Can’t afford any more injuries at the safety position.

It was a good call. Watch the play right from the snap. #21 grabs the jersey of the gunner as he runs by him. Late flag but right call.

In no way was that a good call. I mean, the better team definitely won the game, but that call happens on punts lots of times and never gets called.

The excitement in Joe Buck’s voice really captures the moment.

You can actually see the hold on the video at the 6-7 second mark at the top left of the screen. Green Bay’s gunner gets held from behind, but the flag was thrown very late. Correct call, just very late.

The one thing I don’t get … Hester calls for a fair catch, so the ball is dead where ever it’s caught, right? It’s a fair catch, even if signaled from across the field.

1. You can see the hold on the video.
2. The flag is on the field before anybody comes close to catching it, so it isn’t some kind of conspiracy.
3. The guy flagged doesn’t protest at all and gives the international “my bad” symbol.
Not bag refing, not some conspiracy against the Bear, just the Bears being the Bears. Bad at football.

I was thinking the same thing when I watched this.
