The ESPN-Chris Sheridan Acrimony Continues
Peter May is a basketball freelance writer, and a prolific one. After a long career at the Boston Globe, May now freelances for many outlets – the New York Times, Hoops Hype, and ESPN Boston, to name a few. May started writing for another site earlier this month – SheridanHoops.com, which is the site of former ESPN writer Chris Sheridan. Late this summer, Sheridan left ESPN – depending on who you talk to, it may have had to do with his lawsuit against Peter Vecsey of the NY Post – and started SheridanHoops.com. Sheridan asked his old friend Peter May to write for him. May’s first column went up earlier this week, and “within an hour” ESPN reportedly emailed him and told him he had a choice to make: freelancing for Sheridan’s site or ESPN Boston.
Hmmm. So writing for the most respected newspaper in the country isn’t a problem. Writing for one of the biggest NBA sites on the web isn’t a problem. But writing for a start-up is a problem?
Got it.

If this is true – and I have no reason to believe it’s not – heads will roll.
September 23rd, 2011 at 10:48 AM
I stopped going to ESPN for my sports news as soon as I found out about this site. What a crock, that ESPN
September 23rd, 2011 at 10:48 AM
ESPN constantly prohibit their employees from appearing on The Dan Patrick Show as well
September 23rd, 2011 at 10:48 AM
To echo clown’s point, when we look back at this day, it’s this decision by ESPN that began their ultimate demise.
September 23rd, 2011 at 10:51 AM
BOYCOTT ESPN
September 23rd, 2011 at 10:55 AM
So you’re saying ESPN is bitter to former employees who choose to leave? Jarring
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:00 AM
I will join your movement and promise not to watch any ESPN for the next 31 hours. after that though, I plan to be infront of tv’s showing ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and ABC.
that’ll show ‘em.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:01 AM
I do not understand ESPN’s logic. The average ESPN peruser (14 year olds) doesn’t care if a writer is contributing to another blog, newspaper, etc. as long as it doesn’t pose a detriment to their work with the Network. The people who do care are sites just like this, who are going to publicize the issue, and that is going to also reach the average sports peruser (14 year olds) and have a negative impact on their consideration of ESPN.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:04 AM
Dare I say this is the most important news item since we learned that Bruce Feldman was displeased with ESPN.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:06 AM
Yeah, I’ll watch the games. But I always talk shit about ESPN every chance I get. Millen again? Fuck you guys!
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:06 AM
yeah, an ultimate double standard they avoid discussing. They’ll take anyone on an ESPN radio show but will bar their own talent from many non-ESPN shows. Such petty childish bullshit
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:07 AM
All gigantic companies do stuff like this. See also: Nintendo freezing out third-party game developers in the 80s who dare make games for any other system.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:07 AM
It’s no different than ESPN suits telling their personalities, analysts, anchors, etc. to not to go on the Dan Patrick Show because of their grudge against him. They can go elsewhere, but no DP. Ever.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:10 AM
Exactly. DP had no hard feelings when he was departing ESPN but they treated him like shit on the way out. Too bad their radio programming is a steaming pile shit. The exception is SVP and Russillo
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:10 AM
/Addendum
I find it hilarious that DP calls them out on it at least once a week. It was awesome that Feldman went to DP moments after he left ESPN for CBS Sports.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:12 AM
When Kornheiser and DP were on ESPN Radio, that was the peak for the network. Now it’s almost as bad as Fox Sports Radio. FSR got even worse now that Tony Bruno left national radio to move back home to Philly and do a local show (also moved back to help take care of his ailing mother)
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:12 AM
The exception is SVP and Russillo
I love SVP.. but I don’t find his radio program to be all that entertaining. Too serious.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:13 AM
Oh he has some funny moments but at least he is realistic while being serious unlike the morning show and Blowherd.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:14 AM
Have you heard that asshole from Chicago Mike North? Fuck that guy. I always turn it off when that sack of ignorant shit is on.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:14 AM
ESPN is so lame.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:14 AM
TBL- you think they would be bothered if he hung out with Sheridan?
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:16 AM
He makes me crave for JT The Brick. I am such a radiophile so I am always listening to sports radio all across the country. the TuneIn Radio, AOL, and IHeartRadio apps for ipod/ipad are great. Also radio podcasts. Sort of an addiction.
The best local sports radio show, IMO, is LeBatard on 790 The Ticket in Miami. It’s awkward, ironic, sarcastic, and intentionally corny. Great interviews and he tends to get hung up on by guests a lot because he or his cohost ask an embarrassing or enraging question.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:17 AM
As a CFB fan, there’s no way of avoiding ESPN, but I’ve found myself not watching them at all unless it’s a live sporting event. It’s not so much on purpose, I just don’t find much of what they offer worth my time. With my work being tied to a computer, I read about sports and whatnot all day, so I don’t want to hear someone say the same stuff I’ve read all week.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:19 AM
hell, ESPN doesn’t want their talent TALKING to Dan Patrick at events like the Super Bowl. His producers, Paul Pabst and Seton O’connor were at the Michigan-Notre Dame game. They met up with Desmond Howard and even Desmond said that he’d love to go on the air with DP but he wants to keep feeding his family. It’s absolutely ridiculous to threaten someone with their job for possibly doing an interview with another radio show. I understand competing but their tactics are petty and show insecurity and fear.
I love how DP got the likes of Peter Gammons, Harold Reynolds, Bruce Feldman, and others a day or so after they left ESPN.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:20 AM
I pretty much watch live sports, Around the Horn, and PTI on ESPN. That’s it.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:20 AM
Exactly. Same thing with sports radio. I only listen to sports radio when I’m really busy at work and haven’t spent much time here listening to you guys.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:20 AM
And how’d that work out for Nintendo once they had some real competition?
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:21 AM
Yeah, but this guy sucks at his job.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:22 AM
I don’t disagree. I am loving that Brian Kenny left ESPN to go to MLB Network.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:23 AM
He’ll be one of the few guys who knows what he’s talking about on that channel.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:24 AM
Yeah, but this guy sucks at his job.
Why would you say that about Harold? Sounds like Harold needs to give you a hug.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:25 AM
I like some of the former pitchers they have on there. Also, Nomar on ESPN blows dead bear.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:25 AM
Watch those hands, Reynolds!
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:25 AM
Which makes me wonder how much of a chewing out SVP and Golic have gotten when they went on the show.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:25 AM
I almost spit out my water. Well played.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:26 AM
Who? Don’t say Mitch Williams or Dan Plesac.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:29 AM
Harold, Plesac and Mitch are all quality commentators. Especially Harold.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:29 AM
Al Leiter on MLB Network = good
Al Leiter on YES Network Yankee games = bad
Mitch Williams just looks asleep
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:31 AM
I’ll agree with this. Sean Casey is pretty good too. Kevin Millar should fucking quit though.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:31 AM
I don’t like this insult.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:31 AM
St. Bear > dead bear
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:32 AM
MLB Network > Baseball Tonight.
I have not watched one second of Baseball Tonight this season. I think the MLB Network format and analysis is badtotheass.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:32 AM
You ever listen to sunday night baseball on ESPN radio this year? Thoughts on Chris Singleton as color commentator (no racial pun intended)?
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:32 AM
Michael Kay on his radio show = bad
Michael Kay on YES Yankee games = blows dead traderjack
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:33 AM
I agree. I don’t watch baseball tonight. I just think some of the players that MLBN employs aren’t that good.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:33 AM
Mark Mulder, while awkward on tv, may have been their best former player turned analyst. I like his insight on pitching and strategy.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:34 AM
All of this
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:38 AM
I just think some of the players that MLBN employs aren’t that good.
I think Bobby V is really good on ESPN.. wish he’d move to MLBN so I’d actually see him.
September 23rd, 2011 at 1:33 PM
I eagerly await the demise of ESPN. I also await the TOTO reunion.
/also waiting for Halle Berry to stop by
September 24th, 2011 at 9:48 AM
Didn’t know this. That’s awesome. But, Kenny knows stuff about every sport. That’s one thing I hate – these guys, other than Patrick on the Radio & NBC, who are great “generalists” get stuck with a one sport gig b/c they are not on ESPN. Kenny is Mr. Boxing at ESPN as well. He dominates idiots like the M&M boys in the a.m. So does Patrick. Will Kenny have a syndicated radio show? SHould.
Waiting for a competitor for ESPN (just as Apple became for Microsoft) that will expose (as Apple did with Microsoft) its weak underbelly and inferior, flawed product.
Maybe TBL will get a network. Won’t be able to compete with ESPN in terms of live sports programming; but a Sportscenter competitor is possible.
