I.A.A.F. to Women Marathoners: Stop Keeping Up With Men
Accounting for stiff winds? Sure. Drugs and Flubberized footwear are easy to 86. The ban on music seemed unnecessary but, whatever, no one’s going to have a world record overturned because Daft Punk’s “Discovery” was on the earbuds.
But with the I.A.A.F., which governs track and field and road races internationally, deciding that it’s going to disallow world records for women who run alongside men? We’re officially into the realm of running rules that transcend the fickle. Quite possibly we have crossed the line into bullshit for bullshit’s sake.
Not only has the I.A.A.F. determined that it will no longer recognize women’s time from mixed-field road races, it has retroactively rewritten the world record for the women’s marathon from Paula Radcliffe’s 2:15:25 to a 2:17:42 she ran in a race that started the women 45 minutes ahead of the men.
That 2:15:25? Oh, that’s now recognized as merely the “world best” time, not the world record. It comes complete with a pat on the head and a big thumbs-up.
It’s so cosmically stupid that you have to figure, surely, there’s something else to grasp, some nuance of the sport that a non-expert just doesn’t get. Then you look at Runner’s World and see Peter Gambaccini’s line: “How can I put this succinctly? It’s a dumb and even cruel ruling.”
And then there was this joint statement by the Association of International Marathons (with 300 member marathons) and the World Marathon Majors (representing the Boston, New York, Chicago, London and Berlin marathons): “The current situation where the fastest time is not now recognized as a record is confusing and unfair and does not respect the history of our sport.”
“It’s a move that could only have been made by an organization that doesn’t know its public relations ass from its elbow,” is how Philip Hersh wrote it in the Chicago Tribune, a family newspaper. “Want to diminish an already shrinking audience for track, field and road running? Just ask advice from the IAAF, the body charged with promoting the sport.”
At issue is whether women gain an advantage by using men as pacesetters in the mixed races, because women who race alongside men tend to knock a couple of minutes off their marathon times. But one of the few charms of road running is that it often allows women and men on the same field, at the same moment. And elite women distance runners tend to hold up relatively well against men. The current women’s world record in the mile, for instance, is about where the men’s world record was 94 years ago. In the marathon, Radcliffe’s times would have beaten the men’s record as recently as 1958.
At even greater distances, the gender gap closes in other curious ways: only 10 minutes separate the men’s and women’s world records at 100 km (equivalent to about 2.4 marathons), which happens also to be the approximate gap between men’s and women’s marathon records. Why pull them apart? If a woman can keep up with her male counterpart, wind ’em up and let ’em go. Then call her world record by its rightful name.

Wow, something that’s actually right in my wheelhouse.
And the I.A.A.F. is retarded, everybody in running knows this.
September 23rd, 2011 at 1:23 PM
Did you know that women were not allowed to compete in marathons until the 60s because they were afraid that their uteures would fall out?

Clearly this is a move to prevent bear attacks on men who run marathons.
September 23rd, 2011 at 1:29 PM
Roger Bannister used pacesetters when he broke the 4 minute mile mark, pretty sure that one still counted.
September 23rd, 2011 at 1:33 PM
the IAAF also thinks women’s college basketball teams that practice against men should be ineligible.
September 23rd, 2011 at 1:34 PM
The IAAF will disallow all Usain Bolt times from races in which he’s caught checking out the ladies in the stands while approaching the finish line five yards ahead of everyone else.
September 23rd, 2011 at 1:34 PM
I tweeted this to TBL/TSH/CRM two days ago for the roundup. Then I included it in the first link of the roundup comments yesterday.
I figured no one cared… putting Eifling on it I guess confirms that.
September 23rd, 2011 at 1:34 PM
Considering the use of rabbits in track, road races, and marathons, this is beyond stupid. I could go on for hours, but it’s probably a waste of breath…or typing.
September 23rd, 2011 at 1:35 PM
But to be fair to the IAAF, they will soon announce that records set along side men will count for women if they are wearing an apron (for increased drag). Compromise!

Also, there should be no records on courses where music/live bands is played along the route. And none where people are allowed to cheer, lest your adrenaline levels jump up too much.

September 23rd, 2011 at 1:41 PM
I’ve actually moved onto a lot of slower (but not slow) songs and kinda like it.. I’ve had a bunch of leg/foot injuries though, so I’m a considerably slower runner than most here.
September 23rd, 2011 at 1:43 PM
“Don’t Slow Down” is an example of one of those… by Copeland I think?

I don’t know if I should be happy that it became a post finally, or annoyed it took so long… or wondered if I was ignored by everyone and Eifling came on it himself (very possible).

When I ran the Spartan Race in April, I paced myself behind the fine ass of a female runner for a few miles. Her pace was great and I was slightly concerned I couldn’t keep up, but this was an outdoor obstacle course and by the time we got through a few wall climbs, mud crawls and mountain climbs, I passed her and she fell way back. I have no idea if this means anything.
September 23rd, 2011 at 1:47 PM
I can’t run anymore due to nasty shin splints I got from practicing indoors on hard concrete in HS.

I wouldn’t sweat it. I quit sending in links (unless it is something breaking) a long time ago. I’m sure TBL/CRM/TSH get a shitload and it is a pain to sift through. I bet they get quite a few through Twitter as well.

I don’t listen to anything when I run. It’s me and nature (or the thumping of the treadmill and chatter of old ladies).
September 23rd, 2011 at 1:48 PM
You know… because 1958 is recent in the modern history of the marathon record.

I figured I should contribute lest TBL summon me to GChat aka the principal’s office again. (BREAKING: I didn’t go).

I never listen to music when I run either. I don’t race with music, so I don’t train with it either.

On this note…. fuck Mizuno. I’ve been super loyal to them, but they only make one neutral shoe in wide width, and it’s not one with a lot of cushioning. I get 175 miles out of their shoes, and now have to find a new brand.
I’ve been running in the lightweight NB ones and really like them so if they last, I may get a high-mileage trainer from them, despite the ugliness of their shoes compared to mizunos. (not that the pretty ones come in wide anyway… seriously, having 2E/4E feet sucks)
September 23rd, 2011 at 1:53 PM
Now I’m really thinking about the chick’s splendid ass during that race. She was cute as hell, too. I saw her after the race and would’ve talked, but I was too busy dry heaving.

September 23rd, 2011 at 1:54 PM
A doctor here (in her early 30′s) said something about a fever… I asked her if the prescription was ‘more cowbell’ and she had no idea what I was talking about. I was floored.
September 23rd, 2011 at 1:55 PM
Heredity has also cursed me with wide feet and hands.
September 23rd, 2011 at 1:55 PM
Well I’m left-handed.
September 23rd, 2011 at 1:55 PM
I’ve never been called to TBL’s chatroom. Probably because I’m not here as much or he doesn’t care. You guys must really piss him off.

pretty sure that was the right call…dry heaving has never worked or me
September 23rd, 2011 at 1:55 PM
The Minimus? The only comparable in terms of a more substantial shoe would be the 880. Gonna be a lot heavier. You might not need to get it in wide, since NB is way more wide than Mizuno to begin with.
September 23rd, 2011 at 1:56 PM
I’m making soft pretzels (from scratch) and queso this weekend for the campfire, as a little party to celebrate my wife’s (hopefully) new half-marathon PR. Can’t wait.

Schmidt has a statue at Citizens Bank Park, along with Carlton, Harry Kalas, Bunning and one other. Believe there is a Bobby Clarke statue outside of the Wells Fargo Center.
The Rocky Statue is to the right of the steps outside of the Art Museum.
And I have issues running with chronic tendonitis in my knees and I’ve had some ankle issues the past few years as well.
September 23rd, 2011 at 1:58 PM
I’m not sure if he was scolding me or what. I’ve had a few dick moments lately, but nothing troll-like, so I dunno if that’s his beef. He knows where he can find me. Can’t get on GChat anyway at work.
September 23rd, 2011 at 1:58 PM
Which is funny, because everybody hates that douche.
September 23rd, 2011 at 1:59 PM
I have the Wave Rider (only Mizuno neutral) and the NB 890, both in wide. (and also some Kinvaras which are too narrow to run much in)
The 890′s are nice, but not as flexible as you’d think. They force me into a more forefoot strike, which makes my legs tired a lot quicker (because it’s new), but save my knees. The Riders are nice, comfortable in high mileage, but just wear down too quickly.
I’ve also tried the wide neutral for Asics (Nimbus) and Brooks (Glycerin) and like the Glycerin okay, but both make me eminently aware that I’m in a bulky shoe, which I don’t like. My injury history and lack of a coherent or efficient running stride make me the worst runner to get a pair of shoes for.
September 23rd, 2011 at 1:59 PM
Not really, you’ll still have an idea of what you look for in a running shoe.
September 23rd, 2011 at 2:00 PM
While I appreciate a fine ass and pretty face, the dry heaving was worth it as I kicked the course’s ass.
September 23rd, 2011 at 2:02 PM
I have no idea if this means anything.
only if you got the 10 digits
September 23rd, 2011 at 2:02 PM
The most comfortable shoes I’ve had are when I went to the running store and got fitted with a nice pair of Brooks. I use them for my workouts, and they feel damn good.
September 23rd, 2011 at 2:02 PM
Yeah, kinda sounds like you just have to either bite the bullet, and accept running in a bulky shoe, or accept having to get new Riders often.
Also, the Rider is about to go up to $115 when the new one comes out in November. But it looks sick.
You sounds like a pain in the ass customer, haha.
This would be true, but I’ve been running in the same model shoe since freshman year of high school. I’ve departed a couple times, always come back to it in the end.

A little bit, but we have a Fleet Feet here, and the people there are great. And then to try some other shoes, mostly I got them from RoadRunnerSports.com. They have 60 day try it/guarantee and free shipping if you pay a small fee for their VIP service, plus lots of great email deals and 10% off most shoes. I highly recommend them as well.

September 23rd, 2011 at 2:09 PM
Billy… I found a site from mizuno (myprecisionfit.com, i think) that had a great survey because it asked about bowleggedness (i am) and toes pointing out (i do) and internal rotation of tibia (i also do) and then fits you to a shoe. I put in my answers and the opposite answers and got the same shoes. The only thing that mattered to their algorithm was arch height/type. If I could ever find someone who could tell me the right shoes, and right running style (i used to be a heel striker, with more heel pronation than foot pronation i think) I’d be happy.

September 23rd, 2011 at 2:10 PM
Fleet Feet is usually pretty good, I started out working at one back in the day. They’re pretty thorough in terms of training employees to fit shoes, more than the place I run now. I’m thorough with new employees, but I think I’m the only one.
September 23rd, 2011 at 2:10 PM

September 23rd, 2011 at 2:11 PM
Plantar fasciitis
IT band syndrome (though only hurt sitting, not running)
I have an anterior tibiotalar bone spur (from softball, not from running)
Then they thought I had compartment syndrome or peroneal tendonopathy because my lateral lower leg cramped up after 1.75 miles every time. Plus a bunch of other smaller aches and pains and shin splints that required rest or some other treatment (ChoPat strap). I’m just not made to run.
September 23rd, 2011 at 2:12 PM
I would kill to have the time to be bored. I’m procrastinating eating lunch instead of putting away the 15 boxes of shoes that just came in. Fuck you, UPS guy. Fuck you. Couldn’t wait until Monday.

This. I use the online service when I don’t know what I want, but our local Fleet Feet is very active and supportive of groups and races, and I always try to buy as much as I can there.
A worthwhile comment, indeed.

That’s actually good. The Fleet Feet I worked for was terrible with that because the owner was a cheap, lazy douche who wouldn’t let us give HS kids discounts, or give gift certificates.
The amount of people that come in for race stuff is remarkable here in the DC area, I don’t want to know how much in gifts we give away.
The Whole Foods partnership we’re doing though, that shit is the bomb. FREE FOOD!
