Yardwork: Braves Lose on 2-Out Walkoff Homer, and Mo Makes it Official
Baseball fans who yearned for drama have no reason to complain right now, as we are witnessing two hilarious meltdowns from both the Braves and Red Sox. Boston split a doubleheader with Baltimore yesterday in grotesque fashion to maintain a slim two game wildcard lead over the Rays while the Braves lost a heartbreaker to the Marlins, taking a golden axe to the gonads thanks to a two-out, two-run walkoff shot off the bat of Omar Infante. Ridiculous. Rookie closer Craig Kimbrel, who hadn’t given up a home run since May 27, has served up two in the last two days. Perhaps the September stress is winning the war inside his head? That’s a shame. With the loss and St. Louis winning in Philly, Atlanta’s wildcard lead is incredibly down to just 2.5 games. I’m officially back on the Cardinals bandwagon simply because they have fans. Sadly, this probably means they’re on the cusp of a three game skid.
Yanks 6, Twins 4 – We’ve known this for a long time, but Mariano Rivera made his title of “Best. Closer. Ever” official yesterday, breaking Trevor Hoffman’s all-time saves record of 601. He took care of business in familiar fashion with a 1-2-3 ninth and his signature non-reaction upon the final out. After being congratulated, Mo tried walking off the field but Jorge Posada pushed him back to the mound for a well-deserved ovation on his own. The stirring moment also gave the New York Post an opportunity to pen the bitingly witty headline of “History will show Yankees closer was ‘cutter’ above.” The Post did, however, provide an amazing shot of Mo and his youngest son.
Cards 4, Phils 3 — A headline I never expect to see again, ever: “Lohse outpitches Halladay.” But that’s exactly what happened. Doc went eight and allowed four runs and, inexplicably, walked four batters which is the most free passes he’s allowed in a start all season. Let’s hope to see more of this from Halladay as we head into the postseason. If Cliff Lee gets rocked in his next outing, I’ll be first to do the Bushwackers dance. And yes, Tony La Russa used four pitchers to get the final five outs because he’s more unstable and uncertain than a high school freshman going through puberty.
D-Backs 1, Pirates 0 — Ian Kennedy won his 20th game by beating up on the Pirates. He pitched eight innings and allowed just one hit on his way to striking out 12. Impressive outing for sure, regardless of the weak opponent.
***
Here are the pitching matchups for the baseball games that matter today:
Rays at Yankees: Wade Davis vs. Ivan Nova
O’s at Red Sox: Rick VandenHurk vs. Erik Bedard
Mets at Cards: Mike Pelfrey vs. Edwin Jackson
Braves at Marlins: Randall Delgado vs. Anibal Sanchez
So Braves fans will be rooting for the Mets and Red Sox fans will be rooting for the Yanks? Got it.

Let’s make a deal? No one make any snide remarks about Saves being meaningful and let’s all agree that as long as such a thing as a closer exists, the rightful person now holds the record. 1st Ballot HOF.

John Lackey’s given up 111 runs in 154 innings for a 6.49 ERA. But hey, he’s got 12 wins!

Four games that matter. Funny you should say this because I could have sworn a few weeks ago reading something on this site about how this season is decided already and baseball is boring.

It happened on Saturday actually. They’ve won two in a row since. And #100 just had to come against the fuckin’ Cubs.

So what you’re saying is that he should be in the Cy Young discussion?
September 20th, 2011 at 11:27 AM
damn, ain’t that a kick in the pills.
September 20th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
If Lew Ford can get an MVP vote, John Lackey can get a Cy Young vote.
September 20th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
1st Ballot HOF.
agreed.
though, i’d like to see his chances compared to some of the other top closers. not that it would have any bearing on how good i think Mo’s been.

I don’t what I enjoy more about that Bushwhacker’s video, the 3 grown men triple high-tenning each other after getting a hand slap from the Bushwhackers or the kid in Les Expos hat.
September 20th, 2011 at 11:29 AM
Not one mention of the Kershaw/Lincecum matchup? I like it!
September 20th, 2011 at 11:31 AM
That game doesn’t matter. No one cares.
September 20th, 2011 at 11:32 AM
mike stanton hit some big bombs last night…that’s for sure.
September 20th, 2011 at 11:32 AM
damn, ain’t that a kick in the pills.
I’m not happy about it, but it hurts a little less than it would have against the Phillies (which is what I expected to happen until we took 2 of 3 from them), mainly because the Phillies include two of our a former stars.
But as soon as the season ends I have to wear a Cubs avatar for two months because the Astros are finishing below them in the standings. That the Cubs inflicted loss #100 is just an exclamation point on that.

the guy to the right of him looks like he hadn’t slept in weeks.
September 20th, 2011 at 11:38 AM
Just a game behind St Louis. The chance is tiny, but I’m as shocked as you they remain even slightly relevant.

Jupton hit a broken bat homer last night. He is strong.

Bonds was the last player I saw hit a broken bat home run. Just sayin’.

Braves were going to pay sooner or later for trotting Kimbrel and Venters out there 3-4 days in a row. Freddi Gonzalez really Dusty Baker’d that bullpen this year.
September 20th, 2011 at 11:48 AM
+1 keep this, put in safe place.

September 20th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
Was May 13th the date that one overrated shortstop broke that one overrated record 15 years ago?
September 20th, 2011 at 11:55 AM

The most hallowed record in sports owned by a damned filthy cheater. Makes me sick. Lee Smith will always be the saves king to this baseball traditionalist
September 20th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
Sounds good.
September 20th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
See, Braves? See what happens when you trade Omar Infante for Dan Fuckin’ Uggly?
September 20th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
I’m about to go on a TBL-sponsored vacation… so my thought about the Red Sox…
At least they control their own destiny, and if TB gets so hot that they pass the Sox, maybe the Sox can pass the Yankees, but it’s about time to start pitching guys on 3 days rest and to skip Lackey. This must not go on.

Is it in Miami? Are you looking for a hooker? Because this place might not be the best forum for information on those things.
