Late to the party, but oh well. The Bruins have struggled because hardly any of their top recruits (see comment 13) panned out and because they lost a ton of talent to the NBA in a short span…namely, Arron Aflalo, Jordan Farmar, Darren Collison, Kevin Love, Russell Westbrook, Luc Mbah A Moute, and Jrue Holliday. Westbrook and Holliday especially hurt because people didn’t think they would bounce out of school so early.

That’s the point of the title. The point of the article is to suggest that Howland finally got a top recruit and we don’t know how he’ll turn out, which is different than other years where he got top recruits that didn’t always work out.

Same thing has happened at Maryland. Gary Williams never played the AAU game. Mark Turgeon comes in hiring AAU guys on his staff, and presto: 4 and 5 stars are visiting campus every weekend. Just waiting for the Calapari-like hits 4 years from now.

Gary and MD had a lot of talent visit in the last few years but didn’t sign any. (Lance Stephenson, Tobias Harris, etc.) So far Turgeon’s best recruit, Shauille Cleare, is one who was going to sign when Gary was still the coach and Cleare’s AAU coach is good friends with the Bino Ranson who was an assistant under Gary and was kept on staff.

I assume the Calipari hits you are talking about is the largely held belief that his recruiting is not on the up and up? Just because UMD is starting to recruit harder does not mean anything. Every significant program plays ball with the AAU world. UMD really has been the last to do so.
