Jim Boeheim’s Spectacular Rant About Conference Expansion Includes Reference to Guatemala, Uruguay and Argentina
Jim Boeheim, whose Syracuse Orangemen are packing their bags and leaving the Big East for ACC, was speaking at the Monday Morning Quarterback Club in Birmingham and decided to delve into the annoying/interesting/frustrating topic of conference realignment. From the Birmingham News:
“If conference commissioners were the founding fathers of this country, we would have Guatemala, Uruguay and Argentina in the United States,” Boeheim said. “This audience knows why we are doing this. There’s two reasons: Money and football.
Come on, that’s funny!
“It’s interesting because 30 years ago schools made X amount of money,” he said. “Twenty years ago, they made 2X. Ten years ago, they made 4X. Now they’re going to make 6X. And you know what? They’re going to end up breaking even, just like they did 30 years ago.
“At the end of the day, there’s a school with a billion-dollar budget and they’re talking about making an extra $4 million. What does that really mean when your school’s budget is a billion dollars? It’s just what has happened. People feel like they have to get these mega conferences. Whether they’re right or wrong, we won’t know for a while.”
The only thing Boeheim left out? It’s a cash grab for everyone … except the actual participants of college football. I wish Boeheim had gone there. The Syracuse hoops coach also chimed on Andy Katz’s leading question – at least those on the conference call say it was – about the ACC tournament moving to New York and Madison Square Garden:
“It’s a great place for a tournament,” he said. “Where would you want to go to to a tournament for five days? Let’s see: Greensboro, North Carolina, or New York City? Jeez. Let me think about that one and get back to you.”
I agree with Boeheim on Rutgers/UConn going to the ACC … but I think those two are a contingency plan. Neither school has any other option, and the ACC is probably waiting to see if the Pac 12 goes to 16, and what happens with Texas. I believe Texas is the key right now – what if it went to the Big Ten? Would the Pac-12 feel a need to go to 16? Would the SEC?

I am so incredibly sick of this topic and it’s only Sept. 19th. Fuck.

Rutgers in no way deserves to be in the ACC. They are more of a Conference USA or Atlantic 10 school.

I thought the ACC tourney was in Charlotte. Also, nice job, Jimmy. You just pissed off four of your new conference mates.
/eh, fuck Duke and UNC.

OU Board of Regents concluded their meeting a little while ago. No movement today. Re-affirmed that OU/OSU are staying together. Pac seems most likely.

I now see my comment was more thoroughly expounded upon by KC Res in the previous post…in which Triston takes a dump on TBL’s research skills as well.

“If conference commissioners were the founding fathers of this country, we would have Guatemala, Uruguay and Argentina in the United States.”
Fuck yeah! Then we’d have four World Cup titles!
My question: Why was Boeheim speaking to the Monday Morning Quarterback Club? Shut the fuck up, Jimmy! You’re out of your element! Go talk to the Sunday Morning Point Guard Club.

Lima, where you headed?

It moves around between Greensboro, Charlotte, and Atlanta, and it’s been in Tampa as well.

If the ACC adds Rutgers why not have the ACC tournament in Piscataway, NJ? Please, Rutgers sucks in all ways–athletics and academics. ACC better not let them in.

Atlantic 10? The A10 has no football wing. This is about football.

NYC is a great place for the ACC tourney soley because there are a lot of people there that like college BB, its not as simple as Boeheim thinks. Tampa and Atlanta seem more appealing than Greensboro or Charlotte as well on paper anyway. That changes when nobody in the surrounding area gives two shits about the ACC Tourney. Better to have it in Greensboro or Charlotte where at least UNC/Duke/State fans will sell out the place vs the Fleet Center or whereever the wizards play or anywhere in FLA as previously discussed. And despite GT, Atlanta is an SEC town, holding it there is a waste of time.

In general, I can’t stand Boeheim but I admire his stance here. One of the few intimately involved in the entire process who both understands the destructive effects this is having on tradition and says so in a public forum.
