Andrew Luck Sweepstakes: Chiefs Take the Lead and the Colts Are Serious Contenders
We’ve been looking at the Andrew Luck sweepstakes since last November, when it was clear that the Stanford QB was going to be a franchise player in the NFL. Luck passed on the draft in 2011, but when he comes out next April, he’ll certainly go first. This was my guess in May; I even wrote a post about it in the preseason. Who has the best shot of getting him? Through two weeks – 14 to go! – here’s a breakdown of the contenders:
1) Kansas City Chiefs: Won the West and made the playoffs in 2010, but a dropoff was expected. But nobody expected this: Outscored 89-10, and two of the team’s best players are out for the year: RB Jamaal Charles and safety Eric Berry. The Chiefs travel to San Diego this week (they’ll be at least 2-touchdown dogs), and should be 0-3 before hosting the Vikings and then traveling to Indy (it’ll be dubbed: The Loser Gets Andrew Luck Game). It’s only been two weeks … but I’m not sure I can find three wins on this schedule. Unless Cassel starts to air it out with 50 passes a week … ah, who am I kidding: Andrew Luck to the Chiefs!
2) Indianapolis Colts: I was wrong. I really thought the Colts were a 6-win team without Peyton Manning. That doesn’t appear to be the case after a mind-numbingly bad performance at home against the Cleveland Browns. The running game has been inconsistent, the defense misses far too many tackles and only has two sacks so far, and all signs point to 3-4 wins, tops. Everyone knew Kerry Collins would be bad, but Brett Favre would be worse. Does it make sense to sign David Garrard and make run a a playoff spot? Andrew Luck going to the Colts, as I said last week, is like Tim Duncan to the Spurs. One legend passes the torch to another, and there’s no dropoff. The Spurs rode an injury to the Admiral to the No. 1 pick in the draft and selected their next franchise player. Could Indianapolis do the same? The Colts, though, should spend every other draft pick/free agency move on defense.
3) Miami Dolphins: My original pick last April and I’m sticking with it. The Dolphins took a positive from one week (Henne passed for 416 yards!), but he reverted to the norm at home against the Texans (12-for-30, 5.7 YPA) Sunday. At least rookie RB Daniel Thomas looked sharp at times (despite a fumble): 18 carries, 107 yards. The Dolphins have lost 11 of 12 at home. The good news is, the next three games are on the road (Cleveland, San Diego, New York Jets). The Dolphins could beat Denver and KC, but the AFC East is 6-0 right now, and would it really surprise you if the Dolphins went winless in the division? Somewhat interesting subplot: Back in January, Luck’s college coach was about to leave for Michigan, but then Stephen Ross, Miami’s moneybags owner, got involved and tried to get Harbaugh to coach the Dolphins. Harbaugh ended up in San Francisco, but surely the two had some conversations about Luck.
4) Seattle Seahawks: Quietly have been awful for two weeks in road games against the 49ers and Steelers. Seattle had eight first downs and 164 yards against the “old” Pittsburgh defense. Sure, the Seahawks were without Sidney Rice, but the offensive line is abysmal (or have they just faced two good front 7s in San Fran and Pittsburgh?), and Tarvaris Jackson has been sacked 10 times already. The Seahawks are probably a distant 4th here, as the schedule softens up, starting this week at home against Arizona. Cleveland and Cincinnati are also on the schedule and the NFL West remains a joke.
Fringe, contenders who could emerge in the coming weeks:
* Minnesota Vikings: 0-2. Blew halftime leads against the Chargers and Bucs, and naturally everyone is panicking. I can’t imagine them being the worst team in the league … unless Adrian Peterson goes down.
* Cincinnati Bengals: 1-1. Were a sexy Andrew Luck talking point in the preseason when the Bengals looked horrendous, but through two weeks against Cleveland and Denver, the Bengals don’t look that bad. Consider the opponents, though.
* Jacksonville Jaguars: 1-1. Didn’t look great in the opener, but still outlasted the Titans. But the Jags couldn’t move the football against the Jets (they didn’t get into the red zone once), and they’re an MJD injury from challenging the Chiefs/Colts for having a crack at Luck.

Does it make sense to sign David Garrard and make run a a playoff spot?
No.

I think Seattle will actually go 0-3 against those teams listed.

The Seattle Seahawks will win the Andrew Luck Sweepstakes.

The assertion that the Colts would draft Andrew Luck are absurd. What a crock of shit.

Hey Spencer, Padma looked pretty good at the Emmys.

NDub – Uh, why?
September 19th, 2011 at 1:07 PM
Why in the blue fuck would the Colts take Andrew Luck, pay him godloads of money to ride the bench for at least 2-3 years, while they pay Manning the 5-year, 90-million contract?
September 19th, 2011 at 1:07 PM
Proof that YPA might be a little overrated – Ryan Fitzpatrick had a mediocre 5.7 YPA yesterday yet led five consecutive TD drives in the 2nd half yesterday, including a 14 play 80 yarder at the end of the game that included 2 4th down conversions. Yeah it wouldve been great for his YPA if he had just thrown an 80 yard TD in 1 play, but it wouldve given the Raiders the ball back with plenty of time.

The assertion that the Colts would draft Andrew Luck are absurd. What a crock of shit.
I’d agree except for we don’t know what Peyton’s future prognosis are like. If they think for a second he might not make it back to his old self and they get a shot at Luck, they might take him and hope they can Schaub him a year or so later.
September 19th, 2011 at 1:08 PM
Except in this case, if the legend actually gets healthy, the two can’t play on the field at the same time…so it really is nothing like the Spurs situation. They rode the twin towers to the first championship. Plus the Colts have been ran poorly of late and only saved because Peyton is the GOAT.

padma’s the best.
also, the bengals had no business winning against the browns. they’re still that bad…the browns coaches just felt that having players prepared to play football in all situations wasn’t quite necessary at this point, much to the team’s detriment.

September 19th, 2011 at 1:11 PM
Seattle will look much better at home. They played tough defenses on the road, especially Pittsburgh coming off their embarrassing loss. I still think they can win 4 divisional games and squeak out a couple other home games to get to 7-8 wins.
The Chiefs are going to be lucky to win 4 games. Between the injuries, the lack of depth (this is what happens when you are cheap) and terrible coaching, there is little hope. It was nice to see to coaches that have been run off by the Chiefs, Gunther Cunningham and Chan Gailey, stick it to them in back to back weeks.
September 19th, 2011 at 1:11 PM
i can’t believe it’s not butter face…neck down she’s fantastic though.

And of the options given, I’d give the easier path to Luck to the Dolphins — who still have to play Chargers, Jets, Giants, Cowboys, Eagles, Bills and Pats.
September 19th, 2011 at 1:12 PM
And this is a problem how?
Oh and I won’t touch SD at the current -15 I’m seeing. And I don’t want to take them for survivor pool either. San Diego is a whale’s vagina in survivor and has screwed me over too many times.

September 19th, 2011 at 1:17 PM
what makes less sense than sigining Garrard is the assertion that signing Garrard would be worth a run at a playoff spot.
September 19th, 2011 at 1:20 PM
same as last year. IIRC, last year they were dead last in yards converted into points, or whatever advanced metric that’s called.
September 19th, 2011 at 1:20 PM
Uh, not really. If Manning comes back he’s playing 5 or 6 more years. Robinson played 6 more seasons after Duncan got drafted, but Duncan could actually PLAY. It’s not like Luck’s going to play wide receiver and then be the QB when Manning is done. IF Manning is healthy (obviously a big if) there’s no chance the Colts draft Luck. None.
Also didn’t the Jaguars just draft a QB in the top ten? Why the hell would they draft Luck? Makes no sense.
September 19th, 2011 at 1:20 PM
Did you see the picture of her and the three other girls from the show (Jimmy’s mom, Jimmy’s “wife” and Nucky’s GF) in Entertainment Weekly’s fall preview? I can’t find it online but the body language spoke volumes. I get the feeling that Paz chick isn’t liked by anyone.

Possibly. They didn’t announce the divorce until he was in remission. I can’t imagine marrying someone from work in which you have to portray brother and sister. I realize it’s just acting but it still seems awkward.
September 19th, 2011 at 1:25 PM
Vikings will find a way to win enough games to secure the middle round picks again. It’s why they always seem to never have that “Elite” team.
September 19th, 2011 at 1:26 PM
And, as everybody else said last week, there is absolutely zero similarity in the respective situations.
September 19th, 2011 at 1:27 PM
Of course the Colts will draft Luck. But they would hopefully trade him once they know Peyton is healthy.

And as for Luck…can’t possibly fathom that anybody other than KC gets the pick. They are a serious threat at 0-16.
September 19th, 2011 at 1:28 PM
Colts have enough issues in other areas to NOT draft a QB. They just fucking signed the injured one to the biggest contract ever and so I don’t see them going after Luck. If they are smart, they trade down for even more picks and try to build around Manning a little more.

Indeed. They haven’t been competitive at any point during their two games. The coach has lost whatever respect the players had for him. No homefield advantage at Camarohead anymore. 0-16 is reasable.

It’s good for AJ’s confidence when he gets to face a AAA team disguised as a MLB one.
September 19th, 2011 at 1:36 PM
Now that Peyton Manning is out of the lineup, it is obvious that the Colts have so many holes to fill that, even if they did get the first pick in the draft, that they should try to parlay that pick into more picks that could help replenish their rickety talent base.
September 19th, 2011 at 1:37 PM
Agreed. Colts need major upgrades at interior OL, LB, DB, DT and probably someone to replace Wayne as well as he’s aging too.

RE: The Chiefs going 0-16…..I can really see this happening as well.
Does Haley get another chance if this happens? I would hope not, if I were a Chiefs fan. How much was last year’s success (especially on offense) due to a weak schedule and Charlie Weis?
September 19th, 2011 at 1:41 PM
Amazing how the Colts have been sucking ass without Peyton and the Patriots didn’t miss a beat without Brady.

I saw something on the twitter about him and Pioli not getting along. I think if they start 0 – 10 or something with multiple blowouts, Haley is gone. Unfortunately, Pioli wants Josh McDaniels to replace him*.
*Unconfirmed by me

Didn’t they get five games worse (was the undefeated year the one right before the injury?)? It looks like the poised to fall more than five games, however.

Two weeks again, against two teams that will be in the playoffs, where they squandered opportunities and didn’t get destroyed.
If you think the Dolphins are anywhere close to the #1 pick, you haven’t actually sat and watched the Chiefs and Seahawks play. If you think Seattle is going to get wins even with an easy schedule, wow. They ARE the easy schedule.

And as for Luck…can’t possibly fathom that anybody other than KC gets the pick. They are a serious threat at 0-16.
Okay, here’s the thing, in addition to how they have played.
No Chance: San Diego, New England, NY Jets on the road. Less than 2% chance they win any of those games, it would have to be like multiple kick returns, fumbles, cats and dogs type stuff. That’s 3 losses.
Virtually No Chance: San Diego, Green Bay, Pittsburgh at home, and only like a 5% chance because it’s at home.
Big Underdogs (8-10 points, if not more): at Oakland, at Chicago,
Solid Underdogs (5-7 points): at Denver, Oakland, at Indianapolis
Slight Underdogs (1-4 points): Denver, Minnesota, Miami
That’s 6 almost automatic losses, and 2 more that would be highly improbable. They probably won’t be favored over anyone all year again. They would have to go 50% in the games I have them as a touchdown or less dog, just to get to 3-13 (or pull a massive upset).
Trainwreck.
September 19th, 2011 at 2:11 PM
That game is going to be quite the shitshow. I was going to argue that the Chefs may be favored after the Vikings get curb stomped by the Lions this weekend, but then I saw where KC plays at San Diego where they will lose by 40 again, so yeah, I guess the Vikings will be slight favorites.
