Floyd Mayweather Knocked Out Victor Ortiz In The Most Controversial Way Possible

Well… Victor Ortiz tried to headbutt Floyd Mayweather Jr. and the ref stopped the fight for a minute. During the stoppage, Ortiz hugged and kissed Mayweather to apologize. When the fight was restarted, Ortiz went in for another hug. Mayweather didn’t look like he wanted to hug. The referee wasn’t paying attnetion and Mayweather shrugged off Ortiz. Mayweather hit him with an undefended left and right. Fight over.
As the video shows, it was dirty, but it wasn’t illegal. This might be the greatest case against pleasantries in combat sports. Protect yourselves at all times…
Oh, and then Mayweather got into it with HBO’s Larry Merchant. To be fair, Merchant is awful. I do give him credit for “If I were 50 years younger, I’d kick your ass!” And he did clarify later by saying he wouldn’t have been able to take Mayweather even if he were 50 years younger.
Mayweather and Merchant have a bit of a past.

Not illegal. Pathetic. Weak. Lame.
The sad part is that this is going to get people talking but I don’t think they’ll buy PPVs anytime soon.
September 18th, 2011 at 12:42 AM
Mayweather fights are not even worth finding a free internet stream anymore
September 18th, 2011 at 12:47 AM
Joe Cortez is an awful boxing referee and cost the sport not only credibility, but probably some money too. He should never officiate a big time prize fight again.
As for Mayweather, it’s like this: If you liked him before this fight, you say things like “he should’ve protected himself”. If you’re like me, and don’t think much of Mayweather, you’re likely bitching that he hasn’t fought Manny yet. If Mayweather wants to understand why he’s not more popular, “Money” needs to buy a mirror.
/thanks TBL, for tweeting the live stream and saving a single dad a few bucks
September 18th, 2011 at 12:48 AM
ref’s the worst part of it
September 18th, 2011 at 12:48 AM
I just like how the ref introduced himself as Joe ‘Firm but Fair’ Cortez before the fight. The whole ending was anything but firm or fair.
September 18th, 2011 at 12:49 AM
then again, if we want to go to the first domino, it was the headbutt
September 18th, 2011 at 12:52 AM
Made the night perfect.
September 18th, 2011 at 12:53 AM
I didn’t bother finding a stream of this fight, but this is pretty fucking weak. I’ve never watched much boxing but I can’t imagine watching (even for free) until he fights Manny or someone else takes his place and fights Manny.
September 18th, 2011 at 12:57 AM
byu is embarrasing
September 18th, 2011 at 12:57 AM
Not fighting Manny is part of Money’s “protect yourself at all times” defense.

I don’t get boxing fans. You guys pack bars twice a year…but when you do, it’s craziness. MMA fans sorta pack bars like 12-14 times a year. So odd the differences. Where do the boxing fans go all year long and what do they share interest in?

This should be the counterpoint next time TBL tries to troll Ohio State fans about Pryor:

Somebody–ANYBODY–please knock the smile off that prick’s face? Ortiz got the point taken away. Had he done it again, he’d have been DQ’d. Cortez should not be reffing main even bouts like this anymore. Actually, his behavior couldve gotten a novice fighter killed, so he just needs to go. Ortiz will take a huge hit for this. All the good vibes he built up with the Berto fight are scratched. Mayweather gets to cash in his $25 million and clown around again. Somebody needs to knock that dude’s dick in the dirt.
September 18th, 2011 at 1:05 AM
Not more popular? There is maybe 1 boxer more popular than him. And the quotes around money aren’t necessary, dude just made a ton tonight to add to the “tons”.
September 18th, 2011 at 1:05 AM
Wow. Hadn’t seen Floyd V Larry.
Really, Money? REALLY???
September 18th, 2011 at 1:06 AM
I was rooting heavily for Ortiz but that was just dumb as shit. First of all, he didn’t “try” to headbutt Mayweather, he did headbutt him. And he was trying to get in slick headbutts all night, Evander Holyfield-style. Which is sort of fine, because Money’s got his own dirty bag of tricks. Why was Ortiz just standing there like a dead fish when the fight got timed in? What was Mayweather supposed to do, kiss him?
September 18th, 2011 at 1:07 AM
Where do the boxing fans go all year long and what do they share interest in?
Mostly watch at home on HBO & Showtime & wherever else you can find fights. There are only a few marquee fights in a year but there is an endless supply of fights
September 18th, 2011 at 1:08 AM
gfunk, how do you think pryor will do in the league?
Somebody needs to knock that dude’s dick in the dirt.
do it, held! but keep your hands up
i don’t know, before i get on mayweather i get on ortiz for the initial infraction then the ref for not paying attention and again ortiz for assuming mayweather was cuddly
September 18th, 2011 at 1:09 AM
Well, I submit being a popular boxer nowadays is like being the smartest teenager in the 6th grade, but Mayweather is not as well liked as you portray.
Right now, until he fights Pacquaio, he’s “Kobe Bryant before he won without Shaq”. Bryant shut a lot of his critics up when he did (me included) and fighting Manny is the only way Mayweather will shut people up.
September 18th, 2011 at 1:11 AM
He maybe can make it as a receiver but I doubt it. My guess would be less than 4 starts at QB and/or maybe 30 catches at WR/TE before he’s out of the league.
Still, the idea he was a ‘bust’ at Ohio State is ridiculous.
September 18th, 2011 at 1:11 AM
if only all the promoters and networks could love one another, join hands and do boxing tournament style. sure it would be strateched out over a couple years, but guys would be forced to fight
September 18th, 2011 at 1:14 AM
That’s how Iron Mike ended up “undisputed” Vez. He fought some terrible fighters in that tournament. I think that’s how he ended up fighting Larry Holmes at the end of Holmes career
September 18th, 2011 at 1:17 AM
But really, why should he care? I didn’t pay for the fight, but a lot of people did, and will continue to. And his split in all his fights will be better than the guy across from him. You can say he’s ducking pac-man but you can’t say he’s not great at his job, and maybe that-and money-is all he needs.
September 18th, 2011 at 1:19 AM
fighting Manny is the only way Mayweather will shut people up
Does he want people to shut up? His take from this fight before taxes and fees and what not is gonna be about $50M.
September 18th, 2011 at 1:21 AM
the previous two comments are right. what’s his motivation to fight manny? you can maybe say he has no pride or burning desire to quiet the doubters. i would say how much money does a guy need? if he isn;t going to fight manny, fucking quit. who needs punches to the head?/
you?
September 18th, 2011 at 1:22 AM
Jose, you make a great point, but I think Mayweather does care.
Does a man that doesn’t care freak out on old Larry Merchant like that? We all know Larry is old and should give it up, but to bully an old man like that? C’mon, now. Mayweather cares what people think probably way more than he’s willing to admit.
September 18th, 2011 at 1:23 AM
I said it on twitter already but I’d like to point out here that Manny is ducking him just as much as Mayweather is ducking Manny
September 18th, 2011 at 1:25 AM
stark, you don’t make a great point
September 18th, 2011 at 1:28 AM
It’s true. All the objecting to drug testing and then changing the slit of the gate at the last second b.s. came from Manny’s side
September 18th, 2011 at 1:31 AM
that sort of shit is why many enjoy mma, i would guess. i’m no mma guy but i’m guessing there’s some ducking there tho
September 18th, 2011 at 1:32 AM
I don’t think they’re able to duck in MMA, that’s probably a big part of the draw. The best guys have to fight each other
September 18th, 2011 at 1:34 AM
that and repeated elbows to the bean
September 18th, 2011 at 1:35 AM
Maybe, but in addition to being a great boxer he is smart and a promoter. It would be shortsided to let his emotions get involved. In a decades time, people will remember he went undefeated and many will remember how much Pacquiao ducked Mayweather as well as the reverse. His legacy will take a hit for not fighting Pacquiao, but not nearly as much of a hit it would if he did fight him and lose. In a risk/reward situation, clearly to Mayweather it’s not worth it, especially when he gets to be as rich and famous as he is without fighting someone that could beat him.
September 18th, 2011 at 1:35 AM
Also, the possibility that they might start making out
September 18th, 2011 at 1:37 AM
Well, Ortiz could beat him, too. It was a dumb mistake to not be ready and he was losing, but Ortiz has the kind of power that could end things the other way in one shot. Mayweather has fought good fighters but obviously he & Manny should have fought by now to settle who’s better
September 18th, 2011 at 1:37 AM
I can’t really get in to mma because of things like that. Better fighting, but its more raw, less of a sport.
September 18th, 2011 at 1:39 AM
Yep,big time WRESTLING…I mean Boxing, well I guess that classic knock-out should seal Floyd’s claim Pound for Pound greatest boxer today…and now for a the match we are still waiting for and I hope it comes soon and if Floyd will go along with the standard blood testing and if he can beat Larry Merchant, the first opponent he hasn’t hand picked..I say he’s greater than Ali and then should retire!
September 18th, 2011 at 1:40 AM
Also, the possibility that they might start making out
it’s so much more ghey than (real) wrestling because of what they don;t wear
September 18th, 2011 at 1:44 AM
Mayweather is a punk ass bitch.
He may be smart but he is a bitch plain and simple. Sure, he makes a shit ton of money but if he never fights Manny, I agree with a previous comment that it is like Kobe not winning a ring without Shaq.
September 18th, 2011 at 1:44 AM
The entire sport of boxing might jump the shark at that point though. It’s like a tv show, you get more mileage off the foreplay/sexual tension. You put the 2 characters together and you run the risk of people tuning out after that.
September 18th, 2011 at 1:45 AM
i get that jose. i have to make sure i know what i’m going to see before i click on highlights. lots of opportunity for fractures that i can’t handle
blood, i got no problem with
September 18th, 2011 at 1:47 AM
He’s undefeated? If they never fight, then ten years from now I probably will barely remember either of them. But when thinking of great boxers I seriously doubt he’ll cross my mind since the sport is basically dead, and he’s ducking the fight that might make it relevant again (same criticism goes for Manny, but he’s not American).
On the other hand, I’m not part of the target audience, so maybe it doesn’t matter if boxing doesn’t interest me.
September 18th, 2011 at 1:48 AM
I don’t think so, Jose. They’re both near the end of their reign. There are always good boxers to push. Right now you’ve got Amir Khan and Canelo Alvarez on the verge of making that jump into wider consciousness. There is more money in the fight game than a lot of people realize because of its international appeal and that isn’t going away because Money or Manny loses one fight. Hell, if they really battle each other for twelve rounds, that probably means 2 more rematches = more money
September 18th, 2011 at 1:49 AM
God boxing is supposed to be a legit sport but it gots more drama and entertainment then WWE.
It’s like the drama is mroe important than the actual fight, and they are just trying to sell the next fight right away.
Boxing fucking sucks.
September 18th, 2011 at 1:52 AM
Amir Khan
hasn’t he always been on the verge?
September 18th, 2011 at 1:55 AM
I just really started hearing about him in the last year or so. He had the bad loss to Maidana a couple of years ago but he’s been a lot different fighter since he hooked up with Freddie Roach
September 18th, 2011 at 1:55 AM
Khan is still pretty young. And Alvarez is very young – 21 years olf
September 18th, 2011 at 1:57 AM
I probably over-exaggerated, but in some ways, I think having them not fight might benefit both of them and the visibility of the sport. I do like Amir Khan, he’s great. We’ll have to see how long his dominance can last. Canelo just creeps me the fuck out, because I’m racist.
September 18th, 2011 at 1:58 AM
Sorry, Maidana beat Ortiz. Khan’s loss was to some guy I’ve never heard of
September 18th, 2011 at 2:00 AM
Canelo just creeps me the fuck out, because I’m racist.
Ha! But he’s such o good fighter
September 18th, 2011 at 2:01 AM
How did I type an O instead of an A? They’re not even close to each other
September 18th, 2011 at 2:01 AM
i ws lucky enough to be be in my formative sports years when big time fights were free, on wide world of sports, etc. duran, hagler, leonard, ali, hearns, mancini, antofuermo, on and on
me and my dad would rope a dope wwith these huge boxing gloves, more like pillows. the ones they used before they went smaller. 15-ounce?
he’d cover up and i’d wail away. will be getting some for my boy soon, except i’ll bring it not coverup
September 18th, 2011 at 2:01 AM
I prefer my fights pre-determined and fake
September 18th, 2011 at 2:03 AM
Yeah, I’ve known about him for a year or two. But I like my Mexicans Mexican. Not Irish.
September 18th, 2011 at 2:05 AM
I’m kinda joking, but it was pretty jarring watching him talk the 1st time.
September 18th, 2011 at 2:14 AM
I prefer my fights pre-determined and fake
i got in trouble when i was about 9 for trying to get twwo little kids to fight, like a neighborhood promoter. one of the kids mom’s banged on our door yelling at me after one of the kids drew blood
September 18th, 2011 at 5:51 AM
boxing has become a joke because of long list of mickey mouse bs like this.
September 18th, 2011 at 8:45 AM
This is dumb. Mayweather is amongst the greatest ever, whether he fights Manny or not. The more accurate quote is beating Manny, who has skillfully through his promoter become this legitmizer of Floyd’s career, is the only way Mayweather will shut up his haters. He made yet another fighter look overmatched last night, and Ortiz was looking for a way out. Hugging and kissing the man in the ring after you ram butted him in the mouth? c’mon
September 18th, 2011 at 9:13 AM
A headbutt, an underhanded move for a win missed by the ref, and a threat to an announcer..
Boxing or WWF?
September 18th, 2011 at 9:17 AM
Keep your hands up. Simple as that.
September 18th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
MONEY MAY, BABY!
Mayweather is a fucking genius. he plays the role of villain better than any other sports figure i can remember AND he continues to back it up.
and sorry, but boxing isn’t a gentleman’s sport. keep your hands up youngin’; old gunfighters know dirty tricks or else they wouldn’t be old.
September 18th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
I understand why Floyd burned that $100 bill. He was imitating every person who buys his “fights” and the feeling they have after laying down $55 for that.
