It’s a Tough Morning to Be a Cowboys Fan After All Those 4th Quarter Miscues
Let’s start with the first gaffe, shall we? 3rd down and goal from inside the five with nine minutes left and Tony Romo reverted to swashbuckling 2008 Tony Romo. Trying to play hero, Romo attempted to split Mike DeVito and Bart Scott – for a nanosecond, it appeared Romo might score – but fumbled on his way to the goal line. The Jets recovered.
Four minutes later, the Cowboys had a special teams meltdown. The middle of the line opened, Jets backup running back Joe McKnight darted through and blocked the punt with one hand. Isaiah Trufant, who was just picked up by the team this week, calmly scooped up the ball and scored to tie the game. (PS – Great call, Al Michaels.)
This one could be on Dez Bryant. He may have ran the wrong route. Nevertheless, everyone’s going to pin it on Romo because quarterbacks take all the heat. (Fortunately, this is his wife, so life isn’t all bad for the guy.) Nick Folk went on to kick the game-winner. Final: Jets 27, Cowboys 24.
Three turnovers in a nine minute span? Romo and the Cowboys had no problems through three quarters with the Jets’ defense, but the 4th was forgettable. The tough-to-swallow loss was the first time Dallas has lost a game in which it led by 14 or more in the fourth quarter. But I wouldn’t be too nervous if I were a Cowboys’ fan – Dallas rang up 400 yards of offense, the front seven completely shut down the Jets’ rushing offense, and the secondary was depleted due to injuries. Dallas will be fine.

Nah, Collinsworth had it right, Revis had safety help so he was able to stay between Dez and Romo. Horrible decision by Romo, he HAD to have not seen Revis there.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
It must be tough to be a Jets fan when you realize your running game will prevent you from making it to the super bowl
September 12th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
Awesome play by DeVito, I don’t think I’d kill Romo for it.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
I take that back. Gotta know the situation. You have to go up two scores there. Take no risks.

How much did you enjoy writing this post?

It was tough having the Steelers defense in fantasy yesterday
September 12th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
and lack of a pass defense. aside from the INT towards the end of the game that’s not how you expect them to play.

I shouldn’t have to constantly collapse the FOX NFL Sunday banner up top. Fuck autoplay.

Not to mention the way he runs with the ball.. tuck that shit into your body, moron.

How many gifts have the Jets gotten from teams in the past 1 year?
Unreal
September 12th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
Being a Jets fan in Texas, I could not be happier to see Romo lose another game in the 4th Q
September 12th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
he looked horrible. dreadful effort.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
Why was that fumble not challenged?
September 12th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
That fucking Fox autoplay banner is the most obnoxious thing to ever show up on this site. The volume is full fucking blast and by the time you actually find the button to minimize the window, the ad is over.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
Because the Cowboys have good replay coaches? The ball was loose before his knee hit.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
it’s a good thing the jets lowballed asomugha and he went to philly. i like this CB tandem right now they are putting out there.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
Like I said earlier. I am more optimistic about this team now then I was going into the game. It sucks they imploded but I thought they showed a lot more good things than bad. However their pass coverage will probably be eaten alive by a decent QB. Thankfully they won’t have to face one of those for a while.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
Days like this, I wish tonyhomo.com was still around.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
Worse QB play yesterday… Cowboys, Steelers, Seachickens or Vikings?
I have to go McNabb simply because he averaged 9.25 YPQ. Yes, that’s yards per quarter.

September 12th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
That’s probably it. I agree it was a fumble, but the first few replays were so bang bang I thought why not throw the red flag on a crucial play such as that.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
long-term, Dallas will be fine. This one just hurt.
400 yards? sheeeeeeet.
Dallas looks like a playoff team, that’s for sure.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
Ware is going to be a monster, as usual. If Spencer takes a step forward this year it will do a whole lot for that secondary.
And considering the attention Ware is going to get, Spencer has every chance to do it.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
Except for, ya know, the 4th quarter meltdown.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
I think the Jets looked pretty solid, however the O-line, esp. the right side looked like hot garbage. TBL is right on point with his 10-6 prediction.

Bradford couldn’t get anything done in the air, pretty solid day overall. Didn’t get a chance to really watch him too much as the beer started hitting me. I think next week will be a better chance to see what Nnamdi does against Roddy White or Julio Jones.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
Almost half of the people already eliminated in TBL’s survivor pool.
/laughs at those who picked Browns
September 12th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
Maybe I just find this loss less of a dick punch than last years opener because it is against a good team (not the skins) and I actually have faith in the coach on the sidelines. Odd feelings all around.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
Nnamdi does against Roddy White or Julio Jones.
based on yesterday, he can relax
September 12th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
The Rams need some wide receivers. How they did not address that at all in the offseason is astonishing.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
I think next week will be a better chance to see what Nnamdi does against Roddy White or Julio Jones.
So Nnamdi on Roddy and DRC on Julio?
September 12th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
If Captain Checkdown keeps up his current pace, you will just have to worry about Nnamdi making tackles 3 yards from the line of scrimmage. Matt Ryan made Tim Jennings and Peanut Tillman look like studs yesterday.
Peanut actually played a great game. Jennings is not very good but was made to look that way.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
I thought the PI call against him was kinda weak, but they won so who cares.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
Bradford was hitting a lot of underneath and inside stuff, very little up either sideline, which you’d expect with Asomugha and Samuel. It was a weird game. Lots of injuries for the Rams, and once you start trailing it’s a lot harder for the “run the ball all day” strategy to work against the Eagles.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
If Matt Ryan throws down field, that is.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
Think I saw him get called for pass interference in the end zone once
September 12th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
Oh, also, everyone of note is now injured on the Rams, I think. So uh… you’re welcome, I guess, rest of NFC West.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
A couple of things I read in the pre-season made it sound like “ZOMG!!11!! Atlanta is going to OPEN IT UP!”.
And against Chicago’s secondary, I assumed Ryan would have a big day. Not so much.
I was far more worried about the Atlanta game before yesterday. Now….not so much.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
Eagles don’t match up like that. Samuel will always be on the left side, outside. The other guys may move around a bit, but it’s almost always Nnamdi on the right outside as well and DRC in the slot.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
How are you doing in the pick em league, loser?
September 12th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
Nnamdi will more than likely be on Roddy and Asante and DRC will split time between Julio & Douglas. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the Eagles as 5+ favorites next week.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
Fun stat from TBL favorite Bill Barnwell…
September 12th, 2011 at 10:48 AM

September 12th, 2011 at 10:49 AM

September 12th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
Turnovers killed them. Urlacher’s INT was a very athletic play. His fumble recovery for TD was a huge momentum swinger. Bears rushed 4 for the vast majority of the game, only occasionally sent more than that on some 3rd down plays.
I had almost no complaints after yesterday’s game. However, Roy Williams can stop the first down motion every time he catches a pass. I’m surprised there’s not a GIF of him when he caught the pass, injured his groin and immediately went to the sideline/bench.. YET STILL GAVE THE FIRST DOWN MOTION. Oy.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
Ridiculous amount of dropped passes as well.
Did anyone watch the Lions/Bucs game? People need to calm down about the Lions getting a wild card spot.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
96 Percent please. That stat obviously takes nothing of Romo into account.

September 12th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
It really is a shame the Cowboys implosion took the spotlight off the Steelers getting crushed yesterday.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
Yeah, that was a bit of a dirty little secret in that Eagles/Rams game. One of those receivers make a play or two and it might not have been a different outcome, but definitely would have been a bit closer.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
He did a much better job of getting rid of the ball under pressure instead of taking a sack. It still happened, but not nearly as much as games from last season.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
Romo has an NFL arm and tries to read coverage, in the forth quarter you need an arm punter who does not read coverage.
/Denard’d
September 12th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
Granted, I agree with you because I think the Bucs are horribly overrated and are an 8-8 team at best and a win over them does not mean shit. however, the Lions dominated that game.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
Steelers got bent over and taken to the woodshed. What the hell happened?
September 12th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
The handoff to Green followed by 2 incomplete passes has certainly sold me on Sanchize being clutch.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
I have many friends who are Steeler fans who normally don’t shut up on football Sundays. They were inordinately quiet yesterday. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Steeler team get dominated, physically, like that.
/enjoyed the silence
September 12th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
Looked awesome. The INT was a tipped pass where he had no time to throw on a screen play. He was on target most of the day, can only really think of two throws where he didn’t lead Knox and it cost them some yards after the catch. I was really pleased with Jay’s play yesterday. Should also give some credit to Martz who had a pretty solid day calling plays. Jay was getting rid of the ball quickly and making the right reads.
The only complaints, and this is picking nits, come from Carimi and Webb getting beat a few times and giving up a big run to Turner on a 3rd and 1. Otherwise, the Bears were dominant.

September 12th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
It really is a shame the Cowboys implosion took the spotlight off the Steelers getting crushed yesterday.
Who knew that fielding a defense with an average age in the 30s wouldn’t be a good idea against a team with a good running back and decently fast receivers.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
Beautiful, right? My bar is usually 1/2 full of Steelers fans, so it was especially fun to watch. The one particular loud annoying fat dude who’s always there actually stormed out in the 2nd quarter and never returned. Teehee.
September 12th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
Dominated? It was a one score game. Calvin Johnson is awesome but he’s basically the only good thing about the offense. Lions had a lot of stupid penalties especially that last one that gave Tampa an opportunity to tie it up with a hail mary.

September 12th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
yes, look at the stats. they dominated that game. Bucs got a freebie TD and were still down 14th in the 4th quarter.
