Roundup: Video of a Fight at a Phish Concert, Aaron Rodgers is Quite Good & Do Umpires Favor White Pitchers?
Jessica Simpson … this post will be heavy with (sad) 9/11 reading … the Obama presidency, by the numbers … have you gotten your .xxx domain yet? … a flash mob hit Dallas … a Dutch woman called her ex-boyfriend 65,000 times – in one year … should you be able to use food stamps on fast food? … here’s a photo of a Moose stuck in a tree … why is NBC developing a show about lesbians? … a colleague gave him a tie on the morning of 9/11, so he left the World Trade Center to change his shirt so it’d match the tie, and then a plane hit the tower … the Louisiana Superdome is full of mold … millionaire’s son wins Mega Millions lottery … here’s the guy who caused the massive power outage last night in the Southwest …

Jacory Harris is just not a very good quarterback.

I read on my favorite snarky celebrity website a few days ago that Jessica Simpson says she’s having breast reduction surgery because “the girls” make her look fat…Whaaaa??
September 9th, 2011 at 8:44 AM
Will & Grace did pretty well, didn’t it?
Seeing as I only read about old dudes being the nude ones, kind of glad I’m not moving there.

Tweedy looks a lot different without the beard. And now I hate him for covering that abortion of a song.
September 9th, 2011 at 8:49 AM
Can this happen? I’ve seen girls play up large breasts to try and distract from being heavy, but I’ve not seen them make a girl look fat.

I’m not a Wilco fanboy, but this comment is false.
September 9th, 2011 at 9:10 AM
Apparently not. Since the link CLEARLY is about DHs ONLY. I’d speculate that Ortiz’s season isn’t even in the top 50 among all 35-year olds.
September 9th, 2011 at 9:10 AM
Now, this is ‘Merica and this dude has every right to the money and can spend it as he chooses. But for a dude making bank, $50,000 to two charities seems a bit low. Maybe he will continue to in the future and has more plans for philanthropy. Or maybe I’m just bitter.
September 9th, 2011 at 9:10 AM
Why is the admission of a lack of familiarity with Wilco dumb?
September 9th, 2011 at 9:12 AM
An even dumber comment than TBL’s admission of being unfamiliar with them…far dumber.
“Sky Blue Sky” is garbage. It’s safe ‘dad rock’ for the aging who are trying to cling to something ‘cool.’ And ‘wilco: the album’ was borderline embarrassing.

Buzz Bissinger on 9/11 media overkill.
Read it. Can’t disagree with it. Just look at the National Geographic, Discovery or History channels this past week. There was a 9/11 show every night or every other night.
They’re turning it into Shark Week.
September 9th, 2011 at 9:16 AM
“Sky Blue Sky” is garbage. It’s safe ‘dad rock’ for the aging who are trying to cling to something ‘cool.’ And ‘wilco: the album’ was borderline embarrassing.
I have to admit that is funny but I like both of those albums. I am almost 40 though. Going to see the Avett Brothers tonight. Does that buy me any street cred?
September 9th, 2011 at 9:16 AM
Dumb was the wrong word perhaps. Sad was more like it.
Your opinions on the quality of those albums —be they right (as in your Sky Blue Sky analysis) or wrong (as in your Wilco The Album analysis)— have zero to do with Wilco’s relevance. They are selling more tickets now than they ever did.
September 9th, 2011 at 9:16 AM
He is working for Pepsi. I’m guessing he or his Dad wanted him to pave his own way but I’m also pretty sure he was never lacking a solid bankroll. Article said he was just about to move back in with his parents, but I bet his parents live in a sweet-ass mansion.

September 9th, 2011 at 9:18 AM
Ortiz 2011 still looks awesome in OPS+ for 35 year-olds, historically. DH or no. But obviously when you’re talking OPS+ you’re talking relative to the league that year. Which is fine, just being as clear as possible.

Probably trying to get something free via hotel points, but being near an area like City Center would be good. I think I prefer Natalie’s father, but she strikes me as someone who would be fantastic live.
September 9th, 2011 at 9:24 AM
avett brothers are a better band than wilco right now.
hey are selling more tickets now than they ever did.
as for ticket sales, that’s a pretty irrelevant measure.
my point was that tweedy was a hugely influential and borderline important performer from about 1993 to the early 2000s. Now not so much. It’s not a bad thing. He is just an older cat now. Happy and past his prime.
September 9th, 2011 at 9:24 AM

I picked up The Best Sports Writing from 2007 and 2008 books for $1.20 each at a Borders that was closing up shop.
September 9th, 2011 at 9:25 AM
You have fun rookies to look at. Blackhawks sold out their training camp festival for I think tomorrow. It’s a glorified practice. I suppose paying $5 isn’t that bad but I went last year and left after like an hour. Once I saw the Chalice, that was good enough for me.
September 9th, 2011 at 9:25 AM
That’s math Darren Rovell would be proud of, son.
September 9th, 2011 at 9:25 AM
Even using the WH’s rosy and unrealistic numbers on jobs created by the stimulus bill, each job created cost $280,000. Yikes.
And how many of them are $280,000 jobs? Or even $100,000 jobs?
It’s what I’ve not understood about the job stimulus plans for either party. More jobs isn’t just about the jobs number but the quality of the jobs. A short-term shit gig picking up garbage is better than no job, but it does guarantee that guy will need a new job soon.
September 9th, 2011 at 9:26 AM
The guy/girl ratio will be about even. If you are single, a hook-up is probable. Those boys get the girls horny.
No doubt. Saw them in Athens and the scenery was incredible. Too bad I’m past my prime and engaged.

September 9th, 2011 at 9:28 AM
Not really, depends on what you define as relevant. Culturally speaking, there are more Wilco fans now then there have ever been. That was my point.
As for you assessment to being past his prime…songwriting-wise, you are no doubt correct. But in terms of a live band…they are better now than they were 5-10 years ago. By far, IMO. And I expect that’s what they are settling into, primarily a live act.

I gotta sign up for my winter league in the next few weeks. Haven’t skated since like March or April. Thinking about getting a new pair of skates actually. Mine are about 7-8 years old. No idea what brand to look at. I got new equipment last year except for my shoulder pads and gloves. New stick, helmet and shin guards. Went all Bauer. I should probably invest in new gloves before anything else. My gloves are from like 1970. My old man’s and I just never bothered to replace them.

September 9th, 2011 at 9:32 AM
The multiplier effect of a $40k job is around 2.2. Any jobs created leads to a larger tax base which would help with any temporary deficits. It’s macroecon 101, in the short term government has to spend to offset the production gap created by wealth destruction and aversity to spend by consumer and investment. The GDP equation is C+I+G+NX = Y. With negative real interest rates and the 10yr sitting at 2.01, the government needs to short-term stimulate the economy.

I think getting the stink out of goalie pads is one of the world’s hardest tasks. It’s like baked in there.

the government needs to short-term stimulate the economy.
And let’s all give a big round of applause to Mr. Keynes! Japan tried this stuff for 10 years. Doesn’t work. Cut back regs, Cut corporate taxes, rinse and repeat. Jobs will flow…

I love how espn et al is pushing the “Roddick is a little whiny bitch” angle…great journalism. You know, instead of wondering why the USTA was trying to force two world class athletes to play on an unsafe court. Sad thing is, Roddick is the only player outside the top 3 that has enough sway that he can bitch about this problems.
Just saying, there’s a reason the players are throwing around the union word, because apparently the only way to put on a Grand Slam involves compressing the schedule and endangering the players in order to appease the rights holders.

Doesn’t seem to be working too well for the UK right now. Three straight quarters of negative GDP growth after their austerity plans. Germany, France, Italy all slowing down. Thanks for playing.

Three straight quarters of negative GDP growth after their austerity plans. Germany, France, Italy all slowing down.
Pretty easy explanation. Being drug down by Greece, Ireland, et al terrible nanny state economies. Also, I said cut back regs and corp taxes. Also, pump our own damn oil. Thank you for playing..

Nah. Not if you’re over 60 and/or still living in the 1980s.

September 9th, 2011 at 9:51 AM
Yes because cutting back regs is really gonna do a lot of good. Do you want child labor again? How about we dump mercury in our rivers? This race to become China is fuckign disgusting. And the UK is being affected not just by the PIIGS (all developed countries besides the US are nanny states with their government run healthcare by your definition), but by declining employment, terrible confidence and low youth unemployment combined with a credit contraction. The corporate tax rate is a whole different ball game, you can reduce it but why should we keep giving big oil billions of tax breaks when they’re pulling in close to $50 billion in profit each quarter (exxon, conoco phillips, shell, bp, total, chevron).

But the silence of tribute, the best form of tribute, has been lost in the incessant blather of today’s society. A tree falls in the forest and a thousand talking radio goons seize on whether or not Obama is responsible.
May not always agree with Bissinger, but this column nails it.
September 9th, 2011 at 9:54 AM
Super Saturday is absurd. It makes no sense at all. Hopefully the USTA will realize that the players have finally lost it, though McEnroe has been ripping the back-to-back days for about 30 years now, so it’s not a new debate; just a louder one.

September 9th, 2011 at 10:00 AM
@ImJustSayin – There’s a reason companies aren’t hiring that isn’t argued about. It’s lack of demand. Corporations have plenty of cash, and even if they didn’t interest rates are at historic lows and borrowing makes tons of sense.
If there was demand.
If you can explain how deregulation and lowering corporate tax rates increases demand for products you win the commenter of the day award.
September 9th, 2011 at 10:01 AM
by the by, that “fight” in a phish lot was not exactly what you might think it is. the big dude is a guy who is often hired by merch companies to take down people selling unlicensed merchandise in the lots. shows up at events all around denver. he is no phan. supposedly the bloodied kid was selling stickers.

Not a fan of what our current White House has provided. Really not a fan of the completely non-negotiable Congress either. But, let’s be fair for a second. There wasn’t anyone walking into Executive Command that was going to turn around the previous 16 years of economic disaster in 18 months or 4 years for that matter.
/Yes, I said 16 years. The thriving 90′s was courtesy of decreasing bank regulations which is no small reason that we are up shit creek today

Obama’s best hope at this point as a GOP ticket containing either Perry or Bachmann, or both. Because as bad as he’s been, I’d still vote for him over those flat-earthers.
September 9th, 2011 at 10:03 AM
But Fox News told me it would make things better! They never lie! I’ve never studied any advanced econ theories and they know everything!

Lower tax rates could enable companies to increase wages. It’s a pipe dream though.
In general, blaming/crediting politicians for a bad/good economy is really dumb. Any party.
September 9th, 2011 at 10:07 AM
I would say that the one economic statistic that resonates with your average Joe is the unemployment rate.
September 9th, 2011 at 10:07 AM
Saints defense stunk up the joint last night. The Packers played perfect football. The Saints’ offensive execution and play calling was horrible in the clutch. And yet they still had a chance to tie it on the last play of the game.
I’m optimistic.
September 9th, 2011 at 10:07 AM
I’ve studied every economic theory and never once has this actually happened. Companies will either park this cash away in their treasury or buyback stock.

Yeah…that NO offense is legit. I think the two best NFC teams played last night and I would expect them to be there in the end. As a Falcons’ fan it was a big win for GB as I suspect Rodgers will rape the shit out of Atlanta in week 5.
I have no clue. It sucks they feel the need to have comments turned off, but I suspect that was probably the prudent move.

Phillymantis915 – Give me something, in layman’s terms, that needs to be done to jumpstart the economy.
Let him be clear! Build bridges! Shovel ready jobs! Stimulus 2!
Europe and Japan have used this playbook for years and years and they have done swimmingly with it. The fact is Big Government doesn’t work in the long term. Supply side econonomics with also required spending cuts is the correct direction. But we’ll never get there because it is too damned hard for the pols.

Uncertainty about impending regulations (see: Dodd-Frank and Obamacare) can supress job growth. Jobs pay people money. People spend money on goods and services. Consumption is 65% of GDP.
September 9th, 2011 at 10:14 AM
Need to create consumer demand (the consumer is 70% of the economy/GDP). That needs to be done via job creation (tax breaks for small business and a short term stiumlus focusing on infrastructure – esp. our airports, roads & schools). Allow for streamlined proposal process and temporary easing of zoning for infrastructure rebuilds (all of our major airports need more & longer runways including O’Hare, SFO, Dallas, Houston, Boston, Miami and Philly) Th

That is the opposite of what the question was. Does DEregulation INCREASE job growth?
September 9th, 2011 at 10:16 AM
Depends on where you’re voting. I’m in NJ, and a republican vote is throwing my vote away, so I vote independant to try and get them to meet debate minimums.

This explains why you should vote for only libertarian candidates. They shall banish the onerous anti-personal behavior laws that prohibit truly free trade.
September 9th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
Wow, Ok. I know everyone loves blanket statements, but the answer to the case of deregulation/economic growth should be taken on a case by case basis (as are most economic/political debates) In this case, if we took away the oncoming regulations there would be more jobs then there are right now.

Hotels and restaurants? So this is the kind of guy who creates jobs that pay wages you can’t live on, then hires illegal immigrants to fill them. Yeah, he’s a GOP/corporate wet dream.

Also, might Payton’s stated fondness for the golden goodness of beer have something to do with his playcalling? Just asking:
At least he doesn’t eat grass. Smoke it maybe, but not eat it.
