New York Jets 2011 Preview
“Beautiful things grow to a certain height and then they fail and fade off, breathing out memories as they decay.” F. Scott Fitzgerald.
In the 2010 preview, I had the Jets going 10-6, and getting a Wild Card berth. They finished 11-5 and got a Wild Card berth. In another glorious postseason run, the Jets exceeded expectations and reached the AFC title game. So maybe the third time would be the charm, right? Unfortunately, there was heavy turnover on the roster in this lockout-shortened offseason, and if you couldn’t tell from the Fitzgerald quote (from the Beautiful and the Damned), I don’t think the Jets will be as impressive as they were the last two years. I think the Jets, as currently built, have maxed out. But we’ll always have January 2009 and January 2010. Yes, I’ll have solutions at the bottom.
(I should point out that I am a notoriously pessimistic Jets’ fan and always think the worst. Remember how negative I was after the Jets lost to the Dolphins 10-6 in the ugliest game of the season last year? I really thought they were dangerously close to missing the playoffs.)
That being said, I believe Rex Ryan is one of the five best coaches in the NFL right now (no order: Belichick, Tomlin, Payton, Reid – Philly fans, please spare me your smearing of Reid), and as long as the Jets can get into the postseason, the Super Bowl is within reach. Mull this one over: In the last two years, the Jets have played six playoff games. In those 12 halves of football, the Jets have been bad in just two – the second half of the 2010 AFC title game vs. Indy and the first half of the 2011 AFC title game vs. Pittsburgh. Note: all six of those games were on the road.
Let’s dive into why the Jets won’t be as good as the 2010 version:
1) Plaxico Burress and Derrick Mason are not as good as Braylon Edwards and Jerricho Cotchery. I find it surprising that in the year the Jets claim they’ll open up the offense – they brought in Tom Moore, who previously was in Indianapolis – they’re considerably weaker at receiver. When the Jets went to 4 WRs in 2010, their No. 4 option was sure-handed veteran Brad Smith. This year? Rookie Jeremy Kerley, a 5-foot-11 smurf (whom I love as a player, but he’s a rookie. Go read this about him.) Plaxico cannot get separation from good corners, and Mason is 37-years old. I have high hopes for Kerley, but the kid’s a rookie. Ultimately, I think these options will hinder the development of Sanchez.
2) Antonio Cromartie was hungry for a contract last season, and he earned one. However, the Jets gave him big money (4 years, $32 million) and when you combine the safety of money and the fact that he very obviously wasn’t the team’s first option this summer, I expect a letdown. This is not to say Cromartie will tank the way he did in his last year in San Diego. But he’s always been an awful tackler and relied on his athleticism to get by, and I think those are two areas he’ll struggle in much more in 2011 than he did in 2010. I won’t be surprised if he gets torched in the opener by Dez Bryant (Revis is supposed to defend Miles Austin, their possession receiver) and struggles all season.
3) Too much uncertainty on the defensive and offensive lines. The Jets advanced to the last two AFC title games without a dominant end pass rusher, and they don’t have one this year, either. It appears as if they’ll rotate at least 5, maybe 6 players regularly on the defensive line. Two of these players are rookies. I like what I’ve seen from the rookies – Kenrick Ellis and Muhammed Wilkinson – in the preseason, but both are more geared to stop the run than rush the passer. Wayne Hunter, the right offensive tackle, is a weak link. And the worse news is that there’s zero depth on that offensive line. The Jets led the league in rushing in 2009 (172 ypg) and were 4th last year (148 ypg). Not sure if they’ll crack the top 10 this season.
4) The schedule isn’t favorable. A win over Dallas in week one is crucial, because you’d like to be 3-0 heading into the Baltimore-New England road games. They also have San Diego before the bye week. I’m hopeful for 4-3, but I could easily see 3-4 or 2-5 if they lose to Dallas. The sneaky-tough 2-game stretch: vs. New England followed by a short week and trip across the country to Denver (Thanksgiving).
Dallas – W
Jacksonville – W
Oakland – W
Baltimore – L
New England – L
Miami – W
San Diego – L
Buffalo – W
New England – W
Denver – L
Buffalo – W
Washington – W
KC – W
Philadelphia – L
NY Giants – L
Miami – W
Final record: 10-6. That seems generous, since the Jets always find a way to split with the pathetic Dolphins.
Solutions on how the Jets can get to the Super Bowl in 2013:
1) Find a way to roll the departures of Calvin Pace, LT, Plaxico, and perhaps even Bart Scott and Kyle Wilson (tough to tell if dumping the two LBs is even financially feasible based on the cap) and make a serious run at Ray Rice (assuming he doesn’t re-sign with the Ravens). Obviously this will depend on how Shon Greene does this year, but I see Greene as a nice complimentary back, not a lead workhorse. He’s too inconsistent and fumbles at all the wrong times. Wilson could possibly redeem himself this season after a bad rookie year, but he was not impressive in the preseason. Pace is the most overpaid guy on the roster. He’ll make one really impressive play every six games.
2) I have a feeling the Julio Jones trade will end up being successful for the Falcons, and I think the Jets should consider rolling a few picks together and trading up in the draft to get Oklahoma State’s Justin Blackmon or South Carolina’s Alshon Jeffery. Blackmon looks like a young Terrell Owens. He is only 6-foot-1 and supposedly he’s “football fast” and not “NFL combine fast,” so perhaps he falls a bit and the Jets don’t have to give up that much. Jeffery would be the best fast/tall option the Jets have had since Keyshawn Johnson. (Alternative option if you don’t want to mortgage the draft picks: Draft Notre Dame’s Michael Floyd late in the first round.) The Jets have gone defensive in the last two first rounds and it is time to help out the offense.

This should be awesome.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
FINALLY!!!!
September 9th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
He’s too inconsistent and fumbles at all the wrong times.
as opposed to fumbling at the right times?
September 9th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
blackmon is a total badass
September 9th, 2011 at 12:09 PM
We have two options for where TBL “got” this quote from.
Option A: The Beautiful and the Damned
Option B: [much more likely]
September 9th, 2011 at 12:09 PM
Well at least thanks to Lisk, we won’t have to worry about this being the only NFL team preview on the site
Once again, thanks Lisk for all of them.It makes this post that much easier to bear.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:09 PM
you’re mean.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
i probably should have charted his fumbles. bad job by me. watching Jets games, his fumbles SEEM costly.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
Ok, Mike…fess up, how’d you know about Option 2?
/yeah, i do watch the show.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
you don’t believe they are losing to the Giants as the home team.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:12 PM
truth. but he IS only 6-1, and who knows if he’ll come up shorter when he measures at the combine. obviously a first round lock, but a top 10 pick?
September 9th, 2011 at 12:12 PM
I was merely doing a little fact checking.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
This is ridiculous. He’s a top 5 pick.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
This is the NFL’s problem. They’ll watch him dominate for 3 years, measure him and shit their pants when he’s only 6-0, and then some idiot teams will pass on him and get Randy Moss’d by his ass for years.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:14 PM
/yeah, i do watch the show.
and you are an actual homo. A full fledged fag. That does nothing to disprove the notion that you have to be at least half a fag to watch that show.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:14 PM
home/away? matters not. same stadium.
i picked the Giants to keep their fans off my back
September 9th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
Or you like to channel your inner-Bill Simmons and write reverse psychological statements, thinking that it actually affects whether the Jets win or lose.
/It takes a superstitious guy to know one…
September 9th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
so you rank him … where? No. 1 overall?
no. 1 WR taken overall?
September 9th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
Agreed with TBL about Blackmon’s height issue. Edwards and Holmes had to make some pretty acrobatic leaps to catch the off-target passes. Does JB have those same hops?
September 9th, 2011 at 12:16 PM
I’m sorry, all I took away from this post was “Jets,” “fail,” “fade” and “decay.”
September 9th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
other books i read this summer that may or may not have been referenced by GG at some point: 1984. (yeah, read it in school, way back when)
September 9th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
Revis is supposed to defend Miles Austin, their possession receiver
possession receiver?
September 9th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
okay, yoda. but it isn’t the same stadium when it is filled with green and white.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
I have been waiting for this post for at least 3 weeks
September 9th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
TBL honest question: you really think the Dolphins will be worse than the Bills this year?
September 9th, 2011 at 12:18 PM
don’t ever change, Miguel
September 9th, 2011 at 12:18 PM
Not at all, but dropping him because he’s 6-0 and not 6-2 seems very silly to me. The guy can either ball or he can’t.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:18 PM
Is Blackmon as bad assed as Crabtree? Crabtree has been OK, at best. The Big 12 offenses make decent WR’s look out of this world, especially when the defense is optional.
I think Blackmon is an awesome college receiver, but not sold on him being dominant in the NFL due to his size. He’s not a speed burner either. He seems like a tweener, who may still be very good – just not Calvin, Andre, Fitz caliber…
September 9th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
Oh, he won’t.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
Y-E-S
seriously. I have already bet the Bills +5.5 this weekend.
Miami: no running game, lame duck coach, crap QB, poor front 7 …
September 9th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
yeah…wasn’t gonna’ admit it, but i’m secure in my masculinity.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
Without reading this I’m going to guess there are more hedges in this post than there are hedgerows in northern France.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
I saw that shit on sports science that he can cover more distance vertically than Plax can with his vert/wingspan, even giving up 3-4 inches.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
I think Blackmon is an awesome college receiver, but not sold on him being dominant in the NFL due to his size.
wally just did what Husker Dawg said he was going to.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
He’s more bad ass. And probably has a better head on his shoulders.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
TBL leading off a Jets preview with an F. Scott Fitzgerald quote… I’ll admit I laughed. And then Mike NYC posted the Gossip Girl thing and just made my day. Thank you for posting that
Here’s the thing though, and here’s why I actually believe and sympathize with TBL – the Jets have an awful history. Not Vikings awful, but still bad. Al Toon’s concussions, the Neil O’Donnell signing, the Rich Kotite era, the Fake Spike Game, the 98 AFC title game… I get it.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
obviously a first round lock, but a top 10 pick?
20′s
September 9th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
how’d you know about Option 2?
I was merely doing a little fact checking.
He may have found it here.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
And one of those games was against a gawdawful Bengal team that bent over backwards the week before to let the Jets into the playoffs.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
great comparison. But is Crabtree not a star yet because Alex Smith blows? At 6-1, 215, Crabtree is about the exact same size as Blackmon.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
The Bills might field the worst offensive line in the history of football this year. And they have like 2 offensive starters drafted before the 6th round.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
No. 1 WR imo
September 9th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
Guy in the beautiful damned cheated on his trophy useless wife while army training and fighting his father for his inheritance and ends up killing the mistress getting the inheritance but regressing to child like stupor with a stamp collection.
/just saved you a very boring month
September 9th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
/applauding
September 9th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
Crabtree was a spread WR. I’m always skeptical of spread WRs. I’m sure there are plenty that are good in the NFL, but their numbers are inflated like whoa.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
no. 1 WR taken overall? That will be Alshon Jeffrey
September 9th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
that is exactly my worry with him. I think he might be a tad faster though and much stronger, but his ability might be exaggerated playing in the conference he plays in.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
my favorite solution is that the Jets need better receivers. Not that the QB needs to get better, he just needs better targets.
And they need pass rushing defensive tackles.
I agree about Cromartie though . It seems so silly to pay that guy that much money.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
That’s “REGGIE BUSH and the Dolphins” to you, son.
/MNF Promo’d
September 9th, 2011 at 12:24 PM
Bengals had nothing to gain.
Also: Cincy was 6th overall in defense in 2009.

September 9th, 2011 at 12:25 PM
when is the Lions post coming?
Is Duffy gonna write it?
as for the Jets 10-6 sounds about right.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:25 PM
Litlle bit of that, mixed in with 0 preseason action since he was drafted, mixed in with a huge ego
September 9th, 2011 at 12:25 PM
Have you guys watched Blackmon play or are you just looking at his stats and his height? He made a ridiculous leaping grab to get Ok St. first and goal and on the next play Zona put their DB on an island with him and he toasted him for a TD.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:25 PM
+1
September 9th, 2011 at 12:25 PM
Is Blackmon as bad assed as Crabtree? Crabtree has been OK, at best.
The only combination of letters in this comment that corresponds to Crabtree is “ass.” And his holdout-loving ass has been punk’d by every NFL defense he’s faced.
The only reason he doesn’t look like a bigger bust is his doppleganger across the Bay, DBH.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
This is a great point. Blackmon looks great now, but who knows how good he’ll be with Sanchez as his QB.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
But is Crabtree not a star yet because Alex Smith blows?
Smith just needs better receivers.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
really no co test.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
yes, i watched the game last night. Also: Arizona’s entire secondary, i believe, was rebuilt.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
hey rusty, are you mad at me or something?
September 9th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
The only reason he doesn’t look like a bigger bust is his doppleganger across the Bay, DBH.
In fairness to Darius Heyward-Bey, I don’t even think he thought he should have been taken in the first 10 picks. So Al Davis made him into a bust all by himself.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
This is the land of Marcus Austin, possession receiver. Who the hell has time for a whole game when I got NFL RedZone and ESPN GoalLine?
September 9th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
Dislike the pooping on Shonn Greene. I’d spend money on upgrading the defensive line and safeties before going out and giving a running back a big contract. Besides, Rice is 24. The Ravens will bring him back. They have QB issues just like NYJ. Can’t let their best offensive weapon walk away.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
The “we just need to make [unrealistic move for superstar running back] and [unrealistic draft day trade for stud college WR] and we’re in the Super Bowl, baby!” column has been written at message boards around the Internet a million times over.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
Did he have 128 offensive coordinators too?
September 9th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
Ah 2009, a weird year. The Jets won 7.5 games and made the playoffs.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
I see 10-6 as well for the Jets, pretty favorable schedule, still would rather have Rex over any coach not named Belicheck or Tomlin and we’ll see if Sanchez develops more. Solid post TBL, hope to see you down at the Linc on December 18th.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
Blackmon last year against Arizona and their secondary: 9 for 117 and 2 TDs.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
Clay: Was out of office all week. Should be able to catch up on all 8 of my games today. My bad.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
In fairness to Darius Heyward-Bey, I don’t even think he thought he should have been taken in the first 10 picks. So Al Davis made him into a bust all by himself.
That’s because Skeletor Al was dranking the Purple Drank Kool-Aid at the time.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
you know what’s depressing? The Buffalo Bills depth chart.
I dont’ know how they’re going to win any games.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
Smith just needs better receivers.
/Did he have 128 offensive coordinators too?
Someone needs to introduce Alex Smith to Carl Smith. The perfect can’t-play/can’t-coach combination.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
Interesting. I would love to bet you on that.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
you know my brother well.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
As soon as the Bengals trade for Aaron Rodgers, watch out.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
What is Tom Moore’s role with the team? Isn’t Brian Schottenheimer still around?
September 9th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
Clay: Was out of office all week.
I figured, but then along the way 2 of them resigned, and I was sad.
You’re about to win one of the active ones.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
People around here are quite excited about Stevie Johnson. So there’s that.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
kinda, yeah. He is the white Jason Campbell in almost every respect.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
the phins and bills are horrible. but the disarray and dysfunctional ways of the Miami organization has me thinking they screw the pooch.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:37 PM
Is there a reason Brad Smith is listed as a QB and not a WR other than Buffalo sucking?
September 9th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
Moore is an “adviser” but he won’t travel with the team. My guess is that Moore hopefully will give Schotty the balls he needs to call plays.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
TBL’s attempt at this is actually realistic, though. Big time free agents will want to play in New York.
/Nnamdi’d
September 9th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
fixed
September 9th, 2011 at 12:43 PM
You know what Miami needs? More celebrity owners.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:45 PM
You know what Miami needs? Jeffrey Loria.
I bet he’s ready to stretch his legs and move into a different sport he can ruin.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:45 PM
Peter Gammons used to do a version of this, only he listed about 7 totally unrealistic “ifs”… “If Plax reverts to his 2006 form, if Derrick Mason reverts to his 2004 form, if Mark Sanchez can become a top 10 quarterback, and if Shonn Greene rushes for 1600 yards, the Jets offense could be explosive.”
September 9th, 2011 at 12:48 PM
Anyone seen Over/Under numbers for Sanchez in 2011? Genuinely curious.
I’d assume it’s something like:
TDs: 18
INTs: 15
I’ll go over/over.
September 9th, 2011 at 12:49 PM
Ah, that wasn’t hard.
Bodog
TDs: 19.5
INTs: 15.5
Over/Over
September 9th, 2011 at 12:50 PM
Pretty fair preview. I do find it hilarious that you are giving up on 2011 and planning for the 2013 SB.
September 9th, 2011 at 1:00 PM
Is there a reason Brad Smith is listed as a QB and not a WR other than Buffalo sucking?
probably a lot of wild-cattery going on in Buffalo, for want of some explosion. I will avoid buffalo games, like I always do, so I may not ever know.
If there’s no kick returns, or few, it’s hard to imagine him being worth 4 million per. That’s Tarvaris Jackson money.
September 9th, 2011 at 1:03 PM
Huh? He was a rookie last year, how come Sanchito gets 50 games to develope, but Wilson is already a bust after 1 season?
Ray Rice is not leaving Baltimore and really he is not what the Jets are missing. What the Jets need a genuine *pass rusher. Not a necessarily a Ware or Harrison, but maybe somebody in the Shaun Philips mold, who can win 1 v 1 battles.
*I feel like talking about pass rushers is becoming my calling card.
September 9th, 2011 at 1:07 PM
*I feel like talking about pass rushers is becoming my calling card.
everybody’s got to have a thing, right? We can’t all be QB gurus, or fantasy experts.
September 9th, 2011 at 1:08 PM
but maybe somebody in the Shaun Philips mold, who can win 1 v 1 battles.
speaking of, did you see that fat white guy Strief last night trying to block Clay Matthews? That was very bad news for the Saints. Never mind how they couldn’t move 2 defensive linemen only.
September 9th, 2011 at 1:13 PM
when is the Lions post coming?
next up.
September 9th, 2011 at 1:14 PM
I am sure this game has been talked about already (i don’t usually read the comments for the early posts), but what the hell Payton. Brees is your best player. Why take the ball out of his hands TWICE and run your rookie right at Raji? When I saw the formation on the last play, i was assuming it was going to be a naked bootleg. It should have been. It was wide open.
Those teams looks like the cream of the NFC crop.
September 9th, 2011 at 1:18 PM
It was wide open.
earlier, when they did that play action, Green Bay jumped every short coverage and forced Brees’s second step to be wrong.
But like CJ said earlier, it was very cool to see so many Packers sell out high, because they were so sure that line was getting owned by Pickett and Raji down low.
September 9th, 2011 at 1:19 PM
Ahem. Just to stick to the pass rusher topic, I’m pretty excited to see what adding Babin (and bringing Washburn with him) does for the Eagles to go along with Trent Cole. Juqua Parker is best if he’s only playing half the snaps, and the Eagles may have a nice DE rotation now.
September 9th, 2011 at 1:19 PM
Those teams looks like the cream of the NFC crop.
I haven’t seen much pre-season, so I don’t know.
September 9th, 2011 at 1:23 PM
Clearly, we are not making the playoffs.
After Antonio Crogollum intercepts a Romo pass, on the return he will be pushed into the sidelines right into Sanchez’s legs, and both players will tear their ACL’s. So we lose that game. Get by Jacksonville and Oakland because they are even worse. Then we don’t win again until Buffalo. We lose to New England again, except at home this time. I imagine Revis will have his ankle rolled on about this time too. By now everyone on the team hates each other and everyone is in ‘shut it down’ mode and doesn’t even try. So MAYBE we beat Washington the rest of the way.
Also, Blackmon is going to be awesome and I hope the Jets somehow can trade up and get him. Look at the 2 TD catches last night vs Arizona. Both over the shoulder, and what’s sick is how nonchalant he makes them look, while getting a foot down. Randy Moss is the only WR I can think of that makes it look that..plain? Boring?
Can’t wait to go back to having no expectations for a season again. Go Jets.
September 9th, 2011 at 1:24 PM
sportsdork, aren’t the iggles two rookie olineman or something? I would be really nervous about Vick getting injured or wearing down from all the hits he is going to take. Also, While their pass defense (both coverage wise and pass rush) looks top notch, their LB corp is pretty weak. Teams are going to keep Vick & co off the field by running it right at their front 7.
September 9th, 2011 at 1:25 PM
The Bills have a lot of “gadget” players like Brad Smith, CJ Spiller, and Roscoe Parrish. They’d be pretty good in flag football.
September 9th, 2011 at 1:25 PM
The Jets should sell T-shirts with this slogan on it. Seems like a huge money maker.
September 9th, 2011 at 1:27 PM
And a player who was just signed two weeks ago that the Colts cut, actually.
I’m quietly hopeful about the linebackers. We’ll see. I’m not so concerned that a below league average group there is going to keep them from being an elite team, though.
It isn’t going to keep New Orleans from it.

They could be elite, especially with their offensive weapons (and corner play/ pass rushers), but for now i am putting them on a tier below NO/GB. I am really curious how they do at STL. I think its a tough challenge for the OL in a dome against a pretty good DL.
Man I am happy NFL is back.

That’s absolutely fair. If your O-Line is a problem then you have a pretty serious flaw. No way around it.
I’m hoping that they get better as the season moves along, as Reid’s teams tend to do. Lots of variables, not just the players. New O-line coach, new D-coordinator. Take all of that, plus the shortened off-season, it could be a slow start.

And a player who was just signed two weeks ago that the Colts cut, actually.
it’s funny because he used to play Arena 2. And he was terrible with the Colts.
But if he chokes, you have a life saving fireman on hand to get his tongue out of his throat. It must be really, really sad to miss Max Jean-Gilles.

what if your starting right tackle for opening day is a 2nd year player you stole from somebody else’s practice squad, and he has only 1 year of college football experience, and that was as a defensive tackle?
That’s good, right?

You’d have to ask his mom or girlfriend or something, because as a football fan that’s not possible.

Parnell is the week one starter? I did not know that. Good luck.

Man, I really liked Dallas before everyone started getting injured. Any word on if Jenkins is playing, Dirt?

last I heard, all 3 of Newman, Jenkins and Smith were coming to the game, and being game time decisions. Jenkins is more probable than the other two. Smith is almost certainly out. And Newman will hurt himself on the first play he plays, if he plays.
Parnell is starting because they have no other OTs on the roster besides Free and Smith. Derrick Dockery may play if he gets whooped on, or Arkin. It’s going to be a long night with Scandrick and Alan Ball at the corners.

speaking of, did you see that fat white guy Strief last night trying to block Clay Matthews? That was very bad news for the Saints.
The Saints cut Stinchcomb to save $$ and moved backup Strief into his place. They cut Goodwin at center at save $$. They may have saved their way out of the playoffs.
