Stephen Strasburg’s First Start in Over a Year is an Impressive One
Stephen Strasburg-mania didn’t quite grip the country Tuesday night like it did during his first career start, but his pitching performance was once again impressive: He retired 15 of 17 batters, permitted just two hits and struck out four.
Strasburg, who turned 23 in July, was incredibly efficient, throwing just 56 pitches (40 for strikes) in five scoreless innings. His counterpart, Ted Lilly, threw 107 pitches in five innings. But as soon as Strasburg departed, the bullpen blew a 3-0 lead and the Dodgers won, 7-3. The score is meaningless though since the Nationals aren’t in postseason contention.
ESPN’s Jerry Cransick reports that Strasburg didn’t hit 100 on the gun, but his fastball was consistently in the upper 90s, and he did touch 99.
Baseball has labored through a sluggish August with nary a pennant race. You can’t even find a battle for a Wild Card. Perhaps the Rangers will collapse and let the Angels (3.5 games back) make it interesting, or maybe the Giants’ bats wake up and the defending champs sneak past Arizona (lead by 6 games).
But right now – with apologies to Justin Verlander – Stephen Strasburg’s starts are the most exciting thing in baseball.

I mean.. really?
I cant get enough of those 5 inning starts. Seriously, let’s wait and see if the kid
September 7th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
Ha. Did gaining one game in the past month give them that much faith? Please.

/bangs head into keyboard
More exciting things than Stras – Phillies pursuit of 100+ wins, NL Cy Young race, Verlander starts, Rangers-Angels division race, Joey Bats & Brett Lawrie
Stop writing about baseball, please.

Stephen Strasburg’s starts are the most exciting thing in baseball.
Somebody was talking about trolls earlier…….

/pours one out for cj
September 7th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
CJ, I actually agree with that. Or at least the premise that, with the races pretty much decided, the games I’m watching in September are because of players. Strasburg definitely. He’s only a year removed from TJ, it’s impressive.
September 7th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
I watched the Strasburgler last night. His changeup is his most impressive pitch. 90 MPH, falls out of the zone and looks like a fastball out of his hand. Hope he can go 6-7 innings his next 3 times out.
I’d still rather watch a Clifton Phifer Lee start though. Left handed Maddux is appointment television.
September 7th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
This is shaping up to be the most anti-climatic September I can ever remember so, yeah, it’s pretty much all we have right now.
September 7th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
Come on.
September 7th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
Being a little homerish there. Sorry. But yeah, I would rather see Brett Lawrie beastmode the rest of the way.
September 7th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
Angels/Rangers and Yankees/Red Sox both are exciting races right now much more interesting that 5 innings from a guy who will probably be back on the operating table in another year.
September 7th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
In other DC news… there’s a butt slasher on the loose.
September 7th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
But I think that’s kind of the point. Races aren’t really exciting except for NL West, so if you’re watching baseball it’s probably because of interest in individual players. Love Lawrie, too, but Strasburg’s first start back from TJ was appointment viewing.
September 7th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
AL West, I mean. Subconscious is doing the wishing thinking for me.
September 7th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
So is this Yardwork? Anyone else stay up and watch the whole Yankee game? I shut it off in the 7th but had the radio broadcast on as I fell asleep. Made it to the bottom of the 8th. They should have just started it on time. Playing that late in that kind of weather was absurd.
September 7th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
Yankees/Red Sox is deflated since the loser gets the wildcard. Angels/Rangers is good, but I don’t really expect the Angels to overtake them.
September 7th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
…
where’d you go?
September 7th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
True, we were wathcing it while doing our draft last night, but I still have more interest in other stories around baseball.
/hopes Joey Bats kills it the next month so he can rightfully win AL MVP
September 7th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
Dislike.
September 7th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
The only race worth watching in the NL will be the race to not play Philly in the NLDS.
September 7th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
Am I the only one who hates the “Joey Bats” meme?
September 7th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
Better hope the D’Backs can overtake the Brewers then, also you need to hope that the Phillies take at least 3 of 4 against the Brewers this weekend.

Dislike.
As long as it isn’t that scrappy Red Sox 2B then I am fine with the winner.

Link?
September 7th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
PKI – no. Joey Bats is weak.
September 7th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
I can get down with this. Also, not JacoPEDy “Cork” Ells(teroids)bury.
September 7th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
Well this will be the week they can make up games. They are still 3 back in the loss column but own the tie breaker over the brew crew. If they can’t cut it to within 1.5 after this weekend than Arizona should start giving out extra days rest here and there and prep for Philly.

The Diamondbacks rotation against the Phillies rotation. Not sure I can think of a bigger rotation mismatch in my time as a baseball fan.
September 7th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
Will be in attendance and am hoping for a split. Brewers have historically hit Halladay pretty well. It’s the rookies and the 4th and 5th starts that give them problems.
I wouldn’t be shocked to see Worley throw 8 IP of like 3 hit ball on Sunday.

SC, I thought you wanted strasburg’s arm to fall off and ran around with sparklers when he was injured
September 7th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
a.) I need him for my fantasy stretch run
b.) I ran around with sparklers because it was a “I told you so” moment for me.
c.) Fuck the Nationals. Vive les Expos!

With all due respect Herbert… is anyone really that interested if the Phillies can manage to get 100 wins with that patchwork rotation of scrappy youngers and retread veterans?
September 7th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
First off…wow for dropping my name, thought we didn’t do that around here? But I do enjoy the jist of this post though. Definitely got a nice laugh out of me.
