Baylor is Making Lawsuit Threats to Try and Prevent Texas A&M From Leaving the Big 12 for the SEC
On September 2, Big 12 commish Dan Beebe sent a letter to SEC commish Mike Slive that stated, in part, “the Big 12 Conference Board of Directors unanimously authorized me to convey to you and their colleagues in the Southeastern Conference that the Big 12 and its members will not take any legal action for any possible claims against the SEC or its members relating to the departure of Texas A&M University from the Big 12 and the admission of Texas A&M into the SEC …” [Click here to see the PDF of the letter.]
If you think this sounds familiar … yes, five Big East schools sued Miami and Boston College to try and prevent them from leaping to the ACC back in 2003. That failed.
Clearly, the entire Big 12 was on board with Texas A&M leaving the conference. So why, five days later, has Baylor pulled this lawsuit stunt? [Conspiracy theory: Texas is somehow involved.]
This kind of feels like the scene in Indecent Proposal where Woody lets Demi go off with Redford, but then Woody realizes the mistake he’s made when his loser friend talks about it over dinner … and Woody races to catch the chopper. Woody is left standing on top of the building, screaming and nearly in tears at the grave mistake he’s made. Did Baylor suddenly realize that after the Oklahoma/Oklahoma State news this weekend, the Big 12 was going to crumble, and Baylor would be left begging for an invite to Conference USA or Western Athletic Conference?
The bigger question, I suppose, is how Baylor didn’t see this coming. How shortsighted and pathetic are the leaders in the Big 12? What an embarrassing year. Going back to 2010, the league just let Colorado and Nebraska walk (Pac 12, Big Ten, respectively). Then Texas A&M passed on a rumored SEC invite. Then the entire league let Texas hop in bed with ESPN to form its own network. Only now is everyone panicking, but of course it is too late.
Baylor’s lawsuit will fail. Texas A&M will go to the SEC. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and two others schools – TBA? – will leap to the Pac 12 to form the Pac 16. Either Texas will be in that group, or Texas will go independent (I’ll put the ACC option at an unscientific 2.1 percent). Desperation is not a good look, Baylor. Give it up.

That is one strange movie reference. And that’s coming from a Bill Simmons fan.

I watch sports to distract myself from political matters. Looks like I might have to start watching cartoons instead.
September 7th, 2011 at 11:48 AM
how does atm pass on a rumor, that never actually happened?
September 7th, 2011 at 11:48 AM
I dont think texas gives a rats ass. They could go independent or to the pac 16. They dont need A&M as much as A&M needs them.

Dinosaur show Terra Nova on Fox – yes or no? I’m thinking yes.
September 7th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
Isnt A&M’s whole existence, including their fight song, about their hatred of UT?
September 7th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
I watch sports
you don’t either.
September 7th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
from a money standpoint I guess I can see why Baylor has their panties in a wad, but really how much money is going to be there when atm leaves and the other schools presumably follow suit? Baylor would be a lot better fit in either conference mentioned, at least in a competitive stance, which they never were in the Big 12 (in football, where it matters).
September 7th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
I’ll watch the first episode and then decide.
September 7th, 2011 at 11:51 AM

Texas wants the Big 12 to stay together. They’d be fine otherwise, but that’s what they want right now.
I doubt it will rise above the premise. I am looking forward to JJ Abram’s new Person of Interest and Jason Isaacs in Awake.

are you saying the rumor never happened? or the offer was never made?

and did you ever see that discovery channel movie from like 2006 on alien life? buncha scientists thought up what it would take to live on a certain planet and the moviemakers went nuts. very cool
September 7th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
I remember when they were going to make Turok the Dinosaur Hunter into a movie. A full season of TV shows seems a bit much. I’m going to guess it’s a shitty version of LOST where they replaced the polar bear with a Pterodactyl.
I’ll try Pan Am and The Playboy Club for network TV this fall.

September 7th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
That one’s been picked a bunch of times as a one of this year’s best new shows. I’ll watch but am hesitant on whether or not I’ll like it since Jim Caveziel is in it. He bothers me.
Did everyone hear about the new show created by the writers of Lost? It’s based on fairy tales which sounds like a huge topic of interest for everyone here, right?
September 7th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
Turok the Dinosaur Hunter
I totally forgot about Turok. Dude had a gun that launched nukes. You can’t beat that.
September 7th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
TBL will be right there with you.
September 7th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
It seems Baylor may just be jealous that they weren’t invisted to become a perennial 4-5 win football team like TAMU will be in the SEC.
September 7th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
Hell yeah, Jesus Christ and Ben from Lost, sounds like a good combo
September 7th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
Terra Nova is about time traveling back 85 million years back in time to save the human race? What brilliant scientist came up with that hack plan. I am sure nothing could go horribly wrong.

I generally like Caveziel, but I’m not sure he’s the best fit for this show.
I’m about ready to hand Isaacs the Emmy based just on the trailer for Awake.
September 7th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
what about the Rachel Bilson show on CW?
September 7th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
A few decent new fall shows that will catch my eye – Terra Nova, Person of Interest, Alcatraz, Once Upon a Time. Maybe A Gifted Man and Pan Am.

September 7th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
I doubt it will rise above the premise.
then it’s ideal for my purposes.
September 7th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
Those are going to be poorly written, poorly acted, bad imitations of Mad Men. I will check out Playboy Club only because I know three people casted as extras.

Beebe getting $1.6 billion for 2nd-tier rights for a 10-team league was truly an abomination.
Actually, every school is allowed to hop in bed with any network. Even A&M approved that one. Of course, Bill Byrne declined an opportunity to be in a joint network with Texas.
September 7th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
those three episodes might be the entire series.
September 7th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
Meh. Doesn’t seem like it will have a long shelf life. I’ll pass. I’m very bandwagon-y about my TV shows. I won’t commit until I know it’s going to be on for a while. Except for Game of Thrones.
September 7th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
YAY! Was hoping to see this.
September 7th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
Kansas in the Big10 would be cool IMO but looking at the rest of the schools left in the Big12, none really seem to fit. I would say Iowa ST., but we already have a punching bag in Northwestern.

If Person of Interest is JJ Abrams, I’ll wait until the first full season comes on DVD to test drive it. He writes in such a fashion that every damn week it leaves me wanting to watch the next episode right then. I require instant gratification. The DVDs will allow for that.
Plus I can listen to everyone here bitch about the bad parts and skip them.

It’s called “Once Upon a Time” and it’s Sundays at 8 p.m. between “AFHV” and “Desperate Housewives.”
September 7th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
if AMC can just never bring back The Killing, I’ll be happy with that channel. Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Walking Dead..all good to me. still pissed that they canceled Rubicon. The Killing just blew dead bear
September 7th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
Then Texas A&M passed on a rumored SEC invite. Then the entire league let Texas hop in bed with ESPN to form its own network.
I was in Texas over the weekend, and there was an article in the Dallas Morning News (I think), that A&M was approached by UT initially to form a joint network, and A&M passed. They came crawling back later, but too late into the UT/ESPN negotiations.

what are they running in the middle? I just don’t see the point of the move. It went really badly for Men of a Certain Age doing that, and that was a quality show the network hated. This is a bad show the network loves.

December = dead TV month. January = NFL month. Hell on Wheels takes the Sunday nights. That TV.com article linked by the doctor gives an explanation. I understand, but I don’t like.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
I think Hell on Wheels starts early November so I’m thinking that will be used to bridge the gap a bit.
in your link, it says their giving that show the same shitty 2.5 month hiatus, but only after 4 episodes. And that show has to be a lead in for Walking Dead.
It’s just bad business. I guess the christmas holiday is a reason (and probably not having Mad Men at all this year is an even bigger reason).
September 7th, 2011 at 12:14 PM

September 7th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
Both your statements are wrong. She’s very funny…but there’s no chance it will get better ratings than either of those shows (and neither of those are exactly ratings powerhouses).

I have DTicket this year and am really excited about it. I don’t have to keep checking my phone or looking around for other scores at the bar. Plus my chances of getting a DWI diminish considering the only time I will go outside on Sunday is to walk the dog.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
I want to see lots of Rivers & Mathews on Red Zone in the 4pm slot. If Manningham does anything then I’ll be content.

My wife stopped watching Grey’s and Extreme Makeover after I asked how she could consider a show that made her cry for 15 minutes after the show was over could be considered “entertainment.”

SC, never heard of Beef on Weck?

Been in since Jan 2010. Just finishing up. Masters in Education… a degree I will not use once I acquire it seeing as I moved up at my current employer.
They’ve offered to pay for me to go back to University of Chicago for an MBA once I finish at DePaul. I’m not sure if I can handle more school though.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
I need a phone app so I can do all my pickem games on my phone. All I see by yahoo is for their fantasy football league. Anyone know of anything?
September 7th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
I’m still debating on whether or not I want to pay money to go watch the Vikings somewhere or not. I have a feeling that I will need to consume a lot of beer, which would not be good on a sunday.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
It was on their sign and logo for many years. I think they dropped the “weck” and changed the logo in maybe 2000 or so.

Is Red Zone on free preview for this weekend?
September 7th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
Redzone is a good thing…..maybe the best of things….and no good thing ever dies.
Just to clear something up here, I don’t think anybody ever said that RedZone was a bad thing. RedZone is a punchline because of something TBL wrote to the effect of hardcore football fans that keep the TV on RedZone all day Sunday (instead of, you know, watching an entire game)
September 7th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
*standing ovation*
September 7th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
The implication here is that Texas talked Baylor into filing a lawsuit, right? Why would that happen?
we have always been closely tied to texas, and they went to bat for us when the big 12 was formed. maybe a returning of the favor thing.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
Ugh, why the fuck are sales people using the empty cube across from me to have a speakerphone conference call when there’s a fucking empty conference room with a working phone 15 feet away?
September 7th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
Is Red Zone on free preview for this weekend?
If you have DirecTV you can watch any game this week. Sunday Ticket free preview week
September 7th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
My standard BW3 order is usually 18 boneless wings (6 medium, 6 spicy garlic, 6 Jamaican jerk) and an order of wedges. Extra blue cheese for the wings and extra sour cream for those wedges.
I do enjoy partaking in an order of onion rings or nachos if the table wants to split them.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
No, I downloaded that FF app too hoping it would have the Pick em and Survivor Leagues on there too. No dice. Yahoo has the worst fantasy apps.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
Manning officially OUT.
/sorry if Duckworth’d

state of indiana implodes
September 7th, 2011 at 12:34 PM
Learn something new every day. It’s in their wiki entry too. Suppose I should have just checked there or even Googled BW3 to figure out why.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:34 PM
Do you think I wouldve asked that if I had Directv, Mr. weather?
September 7th, 2011 at 12:34 PM
Jay V/SG: The guy was definitely on RR. I want to say the guy was a replacement for someone that left or got kicked off. I couldn’t tell you what season though. That might have been 10 or so years ago. Maybe more.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
I already linked to his IMDB page. He was on RR in 2003
September 7th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
ESPN’s are worse, CJ. They also cost money. At least Yahoo’s are free. ESPN’s fantasy baseball app sucks so hard. I love the web interface (I know, everyone likes CBS or Yahoo) but the mobile app is terrible.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
Maybe. I don’t know. I just found that out yesterday about the free preview thing. I don’t get RedZone normally and I’ve got DirecTV
September 7th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
Sigh.. duckworth’d.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
They did last year. Those bastards at Comcast fucked up the sound and my HD feed at the beginning of the season. Idiots.
/Team ATT U-Verse
I always thought there were people bitching about Red Zone, my bad. For someone that hates his local team, Red Zone is fantastic. I always end up at the bar for the Niners though.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
I think you’re out of luck SG, but if you find something let me know as well.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
And the spicy garlic wings
/likes Quaker steak and lube more
September 7th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
same here. they started offering some dry rub type seasoning at BDubb down here that is pretty good. 6 of those and 6 hot and I am good.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:37 PM
hey jck and/or Lisk, any word on Matt Cassel’s status for Sunday? I just want to know how much of a chance Buffalo has to blow the game.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:37 PM
Is Red Zone on free preview for this weekend?
I just got this channel, and apparently, it’s included in the sports tier at no extra charge (except that the sports tier now costs 5 dollars more a month)
September 7th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
Agreed, the Buckeye BBQ tops any BW3 wing in this reporter’s opinion
September 7th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
Quaker Steak for the win. Loved them when I was in western PA and now there is one near the Buffalo airport so I try to make it there when i’m out in Buffalo
September 7th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
Big Jack Daddy burger is pretty tits.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
I have not been to BWWW however they opened one fairly close to my parents, so I might go sometime this season for a few games.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
Just to clear something up here, I don’t think anybody ever said that RedZone was a bad thing. RedZone is a punchline because of something TBL wrote to the effect of hardcore football fans that keep the TV on RedZone all day Sunday (instead of, you know, watching an entire game)
the rest of his argument was about how you were actually seeing more football (he even had imaginary stats). I think, by watching red zone, he was seeing 3 times as much football as us schmucks who were wasting our time watching Baltimore play Pittsburgh, or some other stupid stuff.
He was looking at touchdwns.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
Nothing official yet. My guess is that he plays. Not well, but that he plays.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:41 PM

he’s practicing in pads, today, right? I read that earlier.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:42 PM
ZOMG! are you serious, man? U of Chicago is one of the best MBA’s in the country/world. you need to go just to have an economics class or two with Steven Levitt.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:42 PM
Haley has his head up his ass. A perfectly good Stanzi is right there to step in.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:43 PM
I probably go spicy garlic, buckeye BBQ, Louisiana Lickers
Have you ever gone to the Quaker lunch buffet? Pretty good option if you are hungry
September 7th, 2011 at 12:43 PM
Yeah this part is truth.
/if I could have a two year sabbatical from work would definitely try to get into Wharton, Stern or Columbia for my MBA
//will probably end up getting it at Drexel, ‘Nova or Rutgers
September 7th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
I suck at math, Miz. The statistics classes would be the death of me. Still weighing the options. Won’t have to decide until fall of 2012 anyways. I’m done at DePaul in March.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
Yes. I’m not quite sure of the humblebrag definition, and don’t think that qualified, but it was close.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
If i had ever finished my masters, i thought about Drexel for a phd in organizational development. great school.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:46 PM
Kyle Williams will put stanzi out for the year. I didn’t know til yesterday that Tony Moeaki is out for the year. That sucks for the Chiefs
September 7th, 2011 at 12:46 PM
It would be worth it just for that
September 7th, 2011 at 12:47 PM
SC, handle that extra school, fool. That’s a great deal even if it is a lot of work. U of C has the extra incentive that you can actually focus entirely on your schoolwork because there are no attractive people on campus
September 7th, 2011 at 12:48 PM
we got into some calculus in our first Finance and Economics classes at UF during my first year. since then, just a bunch of algebra when it comes to the math stuff. statistics is more learning a new language than it is learning a new math.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:49 PM
A lot of stat work is also done in Excel, so it’s really not that big of a deal.
/team stats
//had to take 3 stat classes for my econ degree
September 7th, 2011 at 12:55 PM
mantis – between undergrad, grad school, and the MBA, I’ve had 3 stats classes. I actually like it now…hated it in undergrad.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:57 PM
My bio stats class involved no Excel and sucked asshole.
September 7th, 2011 at 1:10 PM
you should have signed up for a new class with more Excel and less asshole.

Doesn’t the University of Texas’ fight song mention A&M, too. Some Texas fan, TexasFan.
September 8th, 2011 at 2:32 PM
This kind of feels like the scene in Indecent Proposal …
That is one strange movie reference. And that’s coming from a Bill Simmons fan.
Agreed. Very strange movie reference. Baylor sucks just because they suck, not because of anything else. The rest of them are just greedy mofos.
