Boise State vs. Georgia and LSU vs. Oregon: Future NFL Players to Watch
Due to a quirky (dumb?) schedule, LSU will play Oregon (ABC) tonight (8 pm) at the exact same time Boise State plays Georgia (ESPN). Of the four teams, Boise State has the most to gain, because with a win, the Broncos have a 93% chance* to go unbeaten. Here’s a preview of players from each team you should keep an eye on because they will eventually be getting paid** to play in the NFL.
Boise State
Kellen Moore, senior QB: Likely will go down as one of the winningest QBs in college football history. Best senior QB in the country. Ruthlessly efficient as a junior, but he lost his top two receivers to the NFL. Doesn’t project as a great pro, and some people think he won’t even get drafted (he’s only 5-foot-11). I can see him as the No. 3 QB on an NFL team that runs the West Coast offense.
Doug Martin, senior RB: Short but tough runner (5-9, 215) with nice hands out of the backfield. Scored 15 TDs as a sophomore, then rang up 1,280 yards rushing as a junior. I wouldn’t be surprised if he approached 2,000 all purpose yards as a senior. A poor man’s Mark Ingram? Martin can squat 530 pounds, and I think he could garner 3rd round consideration (maybe 2nd?) if his 4.41 40-time can be improved a bit.
Billy Winn, senior DE: The Broncos’ strength this year will be its front seven. Winn, at 6-3, 295 pounds, is the player to watch. Will be interesting to see how a Georgia line with maybe three pro prospects (Cordy Glenn, Ben Jones, Kwame Geathers) handles Winn, who could be a first-round talent (more likely 2nd) in 2012.
GEORGIA
Aaron Murray, redshirt sophomore QB: Impressive 2010 campaign (61 % completions, 3,049 yards, 24 TDs, 8 INTs), but his offensive line is weaker, and he’s lost AJ Green to the NFL. Murray’s only 6-foot-1, which is shorter than the scouts love (though Drew Brees is only 6-foot). Might just end up being a very, very good college QB who never amounts to much in the pros … like other Georgia QBs (Mike Bobo, Eric Zeier, David Greene). I’d say he’s got a ceiling of being a 2nd-3rd round pick in 2013.
Brandon Boykin, senior CB: Sick athlete, confident and full of swagger, and very fast. Will be interesting to see if he matches up with Tyler Shoemaker, Boise State’s top returning receiver. Likely a mid-round pick in the 2012 draft.
Tavarres King, junior WR: Third-leading receiver on the team as a sophomore becomes the top target of Murray. At 6-1, 190, he’s a speedy deep threat who could have a very good season if the Bulldogs’ much-hyped running game (starring freshman Isaiah Crowell) pans out.
Orson Charles, junior TE: Friend of Nevin Shapiro is supposed to be one of the best at his position in college football. I think he’ll have a big game against Boise because Murray will be under duress and not have much time to look downfield. He’s 6-3, 240 and should be a mid-round pick in 2013.
LSU
(I’ve left Russell Shepard off this list due to his suspension, but he’s a future NFL pick)
Morris Claiborne, junior, CB: One outlet has Claiborne as the 4th best player in the SEC. A dangerous returner and cover man, he’s also blazing fast. A converted receiver, Claiborne probably is a 1st or 2nd round pick in the 2013 draft. Not sure he’d go that high if he came out in 2012.
Rueben Randle, junior WR: High school superstar was a 5-star recruit and had a good sophomore year (33 catches, three TDs), but should be the No. 1 target with Shepard suspended. At 6-foot-4, they say he’s got some AJ Green/Julio Jones in him, but I haven’t seen it yet. Potential is there to be a high-round draft pick, but can he do it catching passes from Lee or Jefferson?
Barkevious Mingo, redshirt sophomore DE: You may know him as a guy with a fantastic name, but at 6-foot-5, 240-pounds, he’s a menacing defensive end. He only weighed 220 last year, but bulked up by 20 pounds. Curious to see what he’s like when he adds 25 more pounds – which is what he’ll need to do to become an NFL DE. Won’t be an NFL draft pick until 2013 or 2014.
OREGON
(I’ve left Cliff Harris off this list due to suspension, but he’s considered a first-round pick)
LaMichael James, junior RB: At 5-9, 185, I’m not a huge fan of his pro prospects. Some say he could be like Chris Johnson of the Titans, but the best 40 time I can find for James is 4.4, and Johnson famously ran a 4.24 at the combine. You also have to wonder if his monster stats the last two years – 1,546 yards, then 1,731 yards and 21 TDs – were inflated due to the up-tempo Oregon attack. James has proved to be a heavy-load workhorse – 8 games with 25+ carries last year. Second-round ceiling in 2013?
* Unscientific number.

I’ll throw out a few more names for my Tigers:
SPENCER WARE: Could be LSU’s best RB since Joe Addai
TYRANN MATHIEU: Actually might be better than Mo Claiborne
ERIC REID: A smarter version of LaRon Landry
MICHAEL BROCKERS and SAM MONTGOMERY: Probably the next prototypical LSU D-Lineman

Kellen Moore has no NFL future.
Go Dawgs. Go Tiger.s

good stuff, Breesus. any projection on the game? i parlayed LSU & Boise (to win).
sure do hope the Notre Dame is postponed.
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:38 PM
lol. I’m not sure how NCAA postponment rules work, but I hope ND doesn’t get another bite at the apple.
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:39 PM
I think LSU will win.
Les Miles is unstoppable when he has a month or more to prepare a gameplan. The only opening game/bowl game he’s lost (I believe) is that CapOne game when they played on that putrid mud pit in Orlando.
LSU’s D-Line will destroy Oregon’s O-Line, and Mingo and Ryan Baker will be coming all-out from the LB/standing DE spots.

Because a .1 second difference in a straight line sprint would make him an NFL-quality RB

Those of you looking for a game to watch, UH-UCLA is a pretty good one.
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:44 PM
I dont hate this move. Four 16-team power conferences might be the way to go. The four winners host 4 wild card teams (at least 2 from outside the Power4), the rest play bowl games, and you have all this ridiculous musical chairs solved for a while.
/too simple

Ole Miss CB takes INT back 90 yards for a score, Rebels lead 10-0 over Jake Heaps and BYU.
BYU driving again, though.
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:49 PM
I hate the idea of super conferences. I hate it like coop hates every school he thinks has no business in the BCS.
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:50 PM
I’ve peeked in at BYU-Ole MIss a few times, it’s failed to keep my attention. UH may have just held off UCLA. Bruins missed a FG, UH up 10 with a little over 2 to play.
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:51 PM
The best run you’ll see all week, and the best catch you’ll see this year.

//UCLA just missed a FG–they’re DONE

I wouldn’t mind SuperConferences.
/as long as you have 4-team divisions and 2 weeks of playoffs
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:57 PM
love that comments like that get posed but Elinwoods is banned.
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:57 PM
So if we’re talking four Conferences why is the Big 12 the only one being mentioned for the chopping block?
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:57 PM
I’m all for super conferences. just no playoffs.
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:58 PM
Breesus… to have a any sort of wild card you’d need three weeks (either 6 or 8 teams)
TBL… you think it’s legit?
Commenters here do have a tendency to harshly criticize celebrities’ looks here, without considering that the ugliest of whom probably is hotter than anyone that would consider dating them.

I don’t see how those two are similar. elinwoods was banned because all he did was shit on absolutely everything.
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:58 PM
I was just informed that Gus Johnson is doing the OU/Tulsa game tonight.
Thanks, guys. Won’t be peeking in on that one now.
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:59 PM
So if we’re talking four Conferences why is the Big 12 the only one being mentioned for the chopping block?
Perhaps because they are the only conference currently losing one huge program with another even larger program openly considering leaving as well.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:01 PM
well at least ND/USF is gonn return soon.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:01 PM
UH blocks the PAT. That could end up being huge.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:01 PM
SEC, Big 10, Pac10 are expanding… the rest are shrinking, that’s why. I don’t like the idea of huge power conferences, but would like there to be some stability and for the teams to stop switching conferences all the time. I’d guess that the ACC/BigEast (what the Big10 doesn’t take) would be the fourth.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:03 PM
A first for me: I’ve never seen a coach “freeze” an on-sides kick with a timeout.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:04 PM
Elinwoods was a saint as was BBoB. the only good banning decision was kicking Ron Artest Money Three to the curb.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:04 PM
This is great. Pitt’s quarterback, uniforms, defense, and crowd all look like they should be rolling in the MAC. What a huge step down.

UH just wrapped up a huge win over UCLA. They are just a better team with Keenum. I’m not looking forward to playing them in November.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:07 PM
I’ll just throw out my wife’s theory on “Contagion”: It has more than four brand-name actors in it, which automatically means that it’s shit.
Anybody notice the NFL cuts? Brandon Merriweather surprises me.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:08 PM
I’m not sure what shitty confernce UH is in. But I think it is CUSA and if so they win that conference going away.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:09 PM
Ocean’s 11 was good.
it shouldn’t. dude was one of the worst pro bowlers ever. he was just not good.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:10 PM
I’m not sure what shitty confernce UH is in. But I think it is CUSA and if so they win that conference going away.
They are in Conference USA and no they aren’t. Even if they win the West Central Florida is easily the best team in the conference.
And f-off.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:11 PM
Point is other shoes would have to drop, so where are those speculations?
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:11 PM
Nice to see that Chris “Time to die bitch” Rainey still features prominently in the Florida offense.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:12 PM
Anybody notice the NFL cuts? Brandon Merriweather surprises me.
I think Belichick actually hated him. He got benched so many times last year, and Belichick was always having to scream at him.
He’ll almost certainly catch on somewhere else. Lots of teams need safety help. I’m still waiting to see some good names. He’s probably the biggest name cut loose, and the only “pro-bowler” cut today.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:12 PM
Point is other shoes would have to drop, so where are those speculations?
I think WWoS covered it nicely several comments ago. I’ll defer to him.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:14 PM
Crist benched by the Irish.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:15 PM
Does anyone know if he kept Shane Vereen? That may be a bigger bust than that O’Connell or whatever QB he drafted.
I also have special interest in Vereen because that was the 2nd round pick we gave up to get Mark Ingram.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:15 PM
Clay, you see the Jets traded a safety today? Was announced after Merriweather was cut. No clue if the Jets make a run at that cheap shot artist, but …
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:15 PM
Gotta be sarcasm.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:16 PM
Wooo! broncos forfeit! michigan wins! long live Hoke!
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:18 PM
Typical Gators. Muschump isn’t gonna run a clean program.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:19 PM
Now that I think about it, I think Merriweather was the guy who blew the coverage against Devery Henderson in the MNF game two years ago. The one of the infamous “He could do the backstroke to the end zone” call, at least for Saints fans.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:22 PM
And it would be sooooo Ole Miss to tease the shit out of its fanbase and then shit the bed in the 4th quarter and destroy the season.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:54 PM
Clay, you see the Jets traded a safety today? Was announced after Merriweather was cut. No clue if the Jets make a run at that cheap shot artist, but …
I hadn’t seen it, but that’s a smart move, because he could easily get signed by Dallas. Better not to give a guy with that much experience playing for Rex a chance to play for Rob, given the game next Sunday.
Plus, probably a 6th rounder, right?
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:54 PM
when I read “Jets cut McKnight,” I thought it was the RB.
September 3rd, 2011 at 11:28 PM
Well maybe i’m getting a little excited after one game.
