Chris Johnson Signs $4-year, $53 million Deal with Titans, Gets $30 Million Guaranteed
Chris Johnson didn’t quite get Larry Fitzgerald money – $50 million guaranteed – but he still got paid: According to Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean, the Titans running back just inked a 4-year, $53.5 million contract, and $30 million of that will be guaranteed.
Johnson, who turns 26 in three weeks, is one of the most dynamic playmakers in the league, but running backs in the NFL are proving to be less durable than they once were, so expect this deal to be frontloaded in the first three years (like Mike Vick’s $100 million deal in which he’ll get $40 million guaranteed).
With the season less than two weeks away, how quickly can Johnson regain his superstar form? The Titans open against Jacksonville, Baltimore and Denver, and only one of those defenses is formidable. I’d expect to see plenty of Javon Ringer mixed in for the first couple weeks while Johnson gets his legs back. I think by the time November rolls around and the schedule softens up, Tennessee could be dangerous.
Hasselbeck has a few weapons at his disposal – Cook, Britt, Johnson – and I think the only thing that could keep this team from contending for a playoff spot is a shaky front seven on defense.

Chris Johnson Signs $4-year, $53 million Deal with Titans, Gets $30 Million Guaranteed
and when the bright light of day shines on this deal, they’ll be able to cut him in 2 years, too, and with limited cap penalty. Oh, and it wont’ be worth anywhere near 53 million.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:12 PM
Reminds me of the Emmitt Smith holdout years ago. Johnson’s presence makes Hasselbeck a better quarterback. Hopefully, this guy stays healthy thru most/all of the contract.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:12 PM
This isn’t a new fad.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:13 PM
With the season less than two weeks away, how quickly can Johnson regain his superstar form?
he just pulled a hammy bending over to pick up a pen to sign the contract. He’s out 3-5 weeks.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:13 PM
Way to cave a day after this moron threw a tantrum on Twitter, Titans. Fine example to set for the rest of the league. If you cry on a social medium, you’ll get your way.
A terrible day for the league.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:14 PM
Reminds me of the Emmitt Smith holdout years ago.
it shouldn’t, since management here was willing to pay him the entire time.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:14 PM
Does this mean he’ll be able to procure more gold teeth? I sure hope so.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:15 PM
Tennessee absolutely has a chance in the AFC South now. The shit hits the fan for Indy this year, too many bad draft picks (Donald Brown, Anthony Gonzalez, Marlin Jackson) and too many desperate FA signings (Tommie Harris, Ernie Sims, Jamaal Anderson). And screw Houston, they’re the same bunch of pussies they always are.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:15 PM
Reminder: this isn’t sarcasm, people. It’s really how he feels.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:15 PM
If you cry on a social medium, you’ll get your way.
I’m going to go tweet ” wah, I want Souvenir City to quit commenting at TBL”
September 1st, 2011 at 1:15 PM
Also, the Titans aren’t 0-2 yet and expected to win the Super Bowl.

Yes, paying top talents good money is always heartbreaking
September 1st, 2011 at 1:16 PM
“A terrible day for the league.”
True, but are we really surprised? We spend so much hand-wringing when sports stories revolve around $. In the end, our hand-wringing makes no difference. Owners and players get the cash they want (for the most part), and we go on as if nothing happened.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:16 PM
This isn’t a new fad.
wasn’t it weird when Lisk thought Vick’s deal might be full of backloaded guarantees? I found that very, very odd.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:16 PM
Beat me to it.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:17 PM
I don’t see how getting perceived fair market value is unfair SC?
September 1st, 2011 at 1:17 PM
Not with the price of gold these days he can’t
September 1st, 2011 at 1:17 PM
Without getting into a philosophical discussion, does anyone feel like they pay way too much money for their NFL fan experience? I do not.
/not a season ticketholder
September 1st, 2011 at 1:17 PM
Gaseous, to me it does because much of the offense hinged on one guy. Without that one guy (Smith then, Johnson now), everyone else is a bit less effective.
Don’t get me started on Aikman’s HOF qualifications…
September 1st, 2011 at 1:18 PM
He wasn’t outperforming his old deal, and didn’t earn a new one?
September 1st, 2011 at 1:19 PM
“…does anyone feel like they pay way too much money for their NFL fan experience? I do not.”
Seconded.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:19 PM
Fantastic.
Yeah SC, how dare the Titans pay one of the most elite RB’s in the league. Morons!
September 1st, 2011 at 1:19 PM
Polished Brass Grills are the new fad.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:19 PM
His old deal wasn’t done yet.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:20 PM
to me it does because much of the offense hinged on one guy
well, that offense wasn’t even very good the year he ran for 2000 yards. And that was their only offensive goal after starting 0-6.
So I’ll still say it’s different.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:20 PM
And screw Houston, they’re the same bunch of pussies they always are.
dammit, this is correct.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:20 PM
Except for maybe that Jags, every team in the AFC south has 8 to 9 wins written all over them.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:20 PM
As an aside, the whole concept of “outperforming one’s contract” is fascinating. Wish I had it in some of my previous jobs. Also, I’m glad I didn’t work under such in the jobs where I underperformed.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:21 PM
Apparently the collectively bargained right to hold out (and get fined) is only window dressing and should never be used.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:22 PM
Gaseous, I fully support your right to hold a different opinion. God bless America!
September 1st, 2011 at 1:22 PM
SC, when owners start honoring contracts to their full term, then this might be a valid point, but they do not have to, and neither do the players.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:22 PM
He wasn’t outperforming his old deal, and didn’t earn a new one?
we have to get that word “contract” changed. It’s more of a tenuous payment schedule.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:23 PM
Gaseous, I fully support your right to hold a different opinion. God bless America!
and I think you’re wrong about that too.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:23 PM
Jim Brown. Walter Payton. And all the other guys who I remember.
And none of the 95% of others who were out of the league after 2.5 years.

Colts fan livin in Indy but I have a bad feeling about this year. And being in a huge bandwagon city, I’m gonna laugh when they start off 2-5 and the stadium is not even a quarter full.

I’d love to see a “What if Chris Johnson Was White” pic.

I think Javon Ringer is hurt? Jamie Harper has looked good in preseason for what it’s worth.
How would one be outraged that a guy who out performed his contract got paid? Granted CJ could have been classier about the whole thing.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:27 PM
Very glad I didn’t pass on him in my draft Saturday, now just get into shape!
As for the real Titans, also agree they have a shot in that division. I still think Indy takes the top spot, but they could be fighting for second place in there.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:28 PM
Damn you. Beat me to it. I would also say the rasta cop in The Professional as well.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:29 PM
Well done weeze and clay. Drexel picture for those sad souls that have no idea what they are talking about.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:29 PM
I think Javon Ringer is hurt?
That must be the straw that broke the camel’s back. If they had Ringer they could just tell Chris Johnson to fuck off.

Go ahead and kick out all his gold teeth. He can afford platinum teeth now.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:37 PM
I just read at PFT that this deal is an extension, so there’s bonus money now, but this year’s 500K salary stays in place.
So it’s not worth quite as much from year to year even, but that may stretch the guaranteed money into a third season.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:37 PM
Anyone else get a Dennis Miller vibe from everyone in the comments section of Deadspin?
\new format blows
September 1st, 2011 at 1:37 PM
Sure, but whether or not you personally find him likeable has quite little to do with whether the Titans consider paying him worthy.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:37 PM
He can afford platinum teeth now.
which is good, because he already had them, but on payments.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:38 PM
That $500K is now $20K after the $480K he’s paid in fines for sitting out.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:39 PM
And I gladly would take him if he passed
September 1st, 2011 at 1:39 PM
i guess it’s better than a Jimmy the Greek vibe.

On the rare occasions that I read Deadspin I never understand any of the comments. I’m guessing they’re all inside jokes and memes like we have here. Personally I think we’re much wittier than the people commenting on Deadspin.

they wouldn’t make it to the first call back for TBL auditions.

September 1st, 2011 at 1:44 PM
My stance is simple, dirt. I wouldn’t have paid him because he’s under contract for two more years. Those two years are ages 26 and 27 for a cheap price. At 28, if he wants to go UFA, that’s fine with me. He’s entering his decline and another franchise can give him a fat contract and he can get his money.
I very much understand why he’s holding out. He could get injured so he wants his money now. But as an owner/GM, I view him as replaceable. He’s a running back. A very, very fast and talented running back. I’ve got him for two more years of very fast and talented. I’d rather run him into the ground for a cheap price and then let someone else pay him when I’m done with his prime years.
Does that make me a bad person? Probably. I’m treating him like a piece of meat. It also makes me maximize the value of him by getting him for cheap and his best years. It’s fine to disagree with it.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:44 PM
they wouldn’t make it to the first call back for TBL auditions.
Everytime someone brings this up, TBL ponders openly whether he should have auditions. So let’s leave Deadspin where they are and not plant ideas in TBL’s head.
/unless those ideas are about a mobile site
September 1st, 2011 at 1:44 PM
is this the most random/creepiest comment on this site…ever?
I’ll take that as a compliment. It’s not random, though, since it’s a parody of the guy asking for hooker advice yesterday
September 1st, 2011 at 1:44 PM
Someone commented on something similar to this yesterday. Was among the most random comments on TBL I’ve ever seen. I even think EIC had a twitter post about it.
Nobody reads the comments..

I wouldn’t have paid him because he’s under contract for two more years. Those two years are ages 26 and 27 for a cheap price. At 28, if he wants to go UFA, that’s fine with me. He’s entering his decline and another franchise can give him a fat contract and he can get his money.
If he doesn’t play for those two years I guess you can say you won, as the GM. But decline is not merely a function of age. It’s age + usage + something specific to each player. Maybe CJ fits the profile of guys who have declined quickly. Maybe he’s more Barry Sanders than Barry Foster, though. So your argument is not sound

/high fives, YYSA!
//now we’re hooker killing brothers!
September 1st, 2011 at 1:49 PM
You have him for two more years, but you wouldn’t have him on the field where it actually matters. You can’t run someone to the ground if they aren’t actually out there running. You would also be saving the next owner two years of mileage on those legs as well. So I guess you “won” but you also lost a shit ton of games in the process.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:49 PM
What does Javon Ringer have to do with a player under contract for two more years?
September 1st, 2011 at 1:49 PM
wow, that was a classic. He wanted somebody to fly down first and talk to the hooker for him.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:51 PM
You were saying CJ is replaceable and if they didnt give him the extension, Ringer would have been the starter.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:51 PM
only if mark schlereth was still playing in the national football league.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:51 PM
I don’t think Chris Johnson was going to sit out two whole seasons. Maybe one, but even that I doubt. If he doesn’t show up, he doesn’t get paid. He also gets fined $30K a day for not showing up.
Based on certain golden things, I don’t think he’s saved up a whole lot of money to miss two seasons and be able to pay those fines.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:51 PM
/bangs head on desk repeatedly
September 1st, 2011 at 1:52 PM
Maybe for a few games. But read #114.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:52 PM
SC, by having the player sit out for two years, you devalue the 1st round pick you invested into him. Plus, now have to allocate resources to attempt replace his production, be it overpaying for FAs or using another draft pick on the position. It’s easier/better business to pay him his current worth.
Look what all the well run organizations do. Well actually most of them get extensions done before it becomes and extended holdout.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:53 PM
SC – The difference between you and intelligent NFL general managers and owners is that they seem to care about winning more than you.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:53 PM
those are solid investments, no doubt the value of gold in his mouth has doubled or tripled since they were installed.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:53 PM
I don’t think he’s saved up a whole lot of money to miss two seasons and be able to pay those fines.
so you think if he sat out for two full seasons he’d owe them $21 million dollars? Is that what you really think?
September 1st, 2011 at 1:54 PM
Look what all the well run organizations do. Well actually most of them get extensions done before it becomes and extended holdout.
e.g. Bears and Forte, negotiating now.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:54 PM
Also, if CJ sits out for a two years, he does not get credit for those years on his contract. He would still have 2 years left on his deal.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:55 PM
No. But probably close to what he’s due to make in the next two years.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:55 PM
Didn’t know that. Kinda strengthens my stance.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:56 PM
Didn’t know that. Kinda strengthens my stance.
Not as much as you think it does.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:57 PM
The difference between you and people like BrawnyTom and Dirt is that you’re more interested in insulting me than actually having a discussion about this and listening to each other.
And at least dirt makes me laugh when he insults me.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:57 PM
You are are also overlooking that free agents won’t want to play for a team that refuses to pay their elite players a fair wage. Enticing talent will be more expensive, rookies will hold out longer knowing what a miser the organization is.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:57 PM
I’m sure as a GM/Owner you would alienate your entire fanbase with that move… see Mike Brown and his success with the Bengals playing the hard/cheap ass owner.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:58 PM
the titans would trade him before that happens and CJ would get his contract. they’d be rid of him and likely holding on to another 1st rd pick at least.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:59 PM
My stance on this is strictly with running backs. If Chris Johnson were a quarterback or an offensive lineman, I’d pay him. Probably before it even came to a holdout.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:59 PM
Not really, those two contract years have now been devalued because you are further away for his peak, plus the added cost I mentioned earlier.
September 1st, 2011 at 1:59 PM
if CJ sits out for a two years, he does not get credit for those years on his contract. He would still have 2 years left on his deal.
I’m not sure this is entirely correct. His rights are extended by two years, not the contract. The contract is written for the calendar years it covers. I think.
September 1st, 2011 at 2:01 PM
My stance on this is strictly with running backs.
Is this based on the Broncos? What is this based on?
September 1st, 2011 at 2:01 PM
Stark, you phrased it better than me. What I meant is, he would still be 2 years away from unrestricted free agency.
September 1st, 2011 at 2:02 PM
Good talk, Brawny. Just a difference of opinion. I respect your position on the whole thing and realize I’m very much in the minority.
/looks up
Shit. Brady Hoke’s meat? Do I even want to click on that? I think I’d rather stay here and take more lumps.
September 1st, 2011 at 2:02 PM
But how many RB’s have Chris Johnson’s talent? Most RB’s are interchangeable, yes, but not all RB’s can break out 2K seasons.
September 1st, 2011 at 2:03 PM
Can I offer you a tissue?
September 1st, 2011 at 2:05 PM
SC – I can understand your position, but you’re looking at this strictly as a business and don’t seem to be taking into account much winning of ballgames. Your team would be much better with CJ on the field than without. You also run the risk of alienating fan bases, draft picks and free agents and losing out on future money with lower gate receipts and losing out on high caliber talent.
September 1st, 2011 at 2:06 PM
This is commonly used in discussions I have about this. I have to ask… do you think he’s going to eclipse 2,000 yards again? I don’t. He’ll probably have a couple great 1,500 yard seasons.
I’m willing to take some chances in the draft again with more guys that run sub 4.4 40 times. Mark Ingram was the only RB taken in the first round this last year. You’re taking a chance, but RBs can definitely be found in rounds 2-5.
September 1st, 2011 at 2:07 PM
I totally understand this part. My feeling is that CJ would be on the field the next two years whether I gave him $60M or not. I’m calling his bluff on sitting out 2 years. He’s forfeiting money and the chance to earn more. Eventually, his agent will get that into his head after he sits out 5-6 weeks.

if you go ask any team w/o a standout RB if they would rather have one top 5 back or if they would rather have multiple middle tier backs, most would say give me a top 5 back anyday.
you’ll likely see more RB’s taken in the 1st round now with the payscale in place.

SC, there are like 2-3 guys in the league that are honestly comparable to CJ right now and for the next couple of years. He might get injured cataclysmically but unless the Titans have some medical files saying that’s likely you shouldn’t really factor that into the discussion. When you say he’s replaceable that implies there are ready replacements at hand and that isn’t the case at all.

Gonna need a steak for that black eye.

That’s a great point.
Again, I want to replace him in two years when he’s 28 years old. I want him to play for me for two more years while I have him under contract. That is what I mean by replaceable. I’m calling his bluff on sitting out. I don’t think he’ll do it. I firmly believe I’m getting production in 2011-12, 2012-13.

So you’re saying that your worst case guess would be 1,500 yards for him, got it.
Now how many 2-5 round picks really do ACTUALLY run for 1,500 yards, with potential for as much as 2,000? That’s really what you’re trying to figure out as an owner/GM. And in my opinion, CJ is way better than any RB you would be gambling on in the next 1-2 years.

Once the deadline passes for service accrual what is the ace your planning to play here? He’s already lost this year towards free agency and if he plays he’s putting himself at risk. If he doesn’t play, odds are heavily in his favor that even if he sits out his year for $0, the amount he makes in 2013 will be greater than what he was going to make this year so what is he losing by sitting out the year? The onus is on the team to get him in and have his production more than it is on him to put his tail between his legs and show up and play for less money.

Plain and simple CJ is worth every dime.My Titans should be happy they got a steal so cheap 4 years ago.All the play your deal out talk is B.S.They why you’ve never heard Real analyst say it.I agree, the holdout could’ve been a little less stressful it wasn’t.People tend to compare the NFL to their job, lol, now if you work at Wendy’s no chance. But their are jobs in which you agree to pay say $150 for a yard cut, crew shows up and your going can you trim these bushes cut those limbs and plant a flowerbed,Expect to come off another bill fifty.CJ wasn’t expected to be CJ2K,he was supposed to be a back up for LenDale which quickly turned into smash and dash….still no money. Then the Titans saw the really saw the talent and booted L.W. for Every Coaches Dream still…no money. How your boss gone tell you your my best employee hate to lose you,but you know half your co-workers make more than you.As far as the Twitter $h!t anyone with common since knows he was saying forget all you fans of other teams, begging him to sign for nothing, pretending to be his fan for your fantasy league.and last but not least why why why would anyone give a care about what someone else spends their money on.
