Can’t say I would’ve done the same thing. I’ve got debt sank into a car loan and student loans. This would’ve helped – big time.

a) gotta pay the warlords…no way around it in that area
b) poor planning? well it’d be nice if all those roads and schools we funded didn’t get blown up a few weeks later
c) mercenaries are nasty…no defense for them
August 31st, 2011 at 9:07 AM
Same here. I might’ve given some back, but not the whole $20k.

August 31st, 2011 at 9:08 AM
True, but are we paying the warlords and they take that money and buy guns to shoot at us? You’ve got to have some return on that, whether they drop arms, or fund some shitty farmland for their community. This article indicates there isn’t a return.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:09 AM
I don’t know about that one.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:10 AM
is it Saturday yet?
August 31st, 2011 at 9:12 AM
Good morning, Ms. Tweedy. So nice to see you again.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:12 AM
no. those warlords want more duffel bags full of CIA money so they don’t shoot at us. but if we didn’t pay em, instead of standing by idly and doing nothing, they would shoot at us.
there isn’t a return because anything we or the afghans do build, it gets blown up by insurgents. it’s a vicious cycle.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:13 AM
Only 57 hours and 47 minutes til kickoff, Ark. Don’t even need to wait until Saturday to at least get a taste. Granted, it’s not that Walter White shit but it still gives a nice buzz.

Isn’t there some rule that if no one claims it after a couple days it belongs to the people who turned it in? May not be the case in this instance because they think the cash is crime related.

The whole personal conduct policy shit pisses me off – Goodell is so arbitrary in the whole process it’s mind bottling. Just put together a friggin chart with corresponding crime/punishment and be done with it.

This is funny because literally the only two times I’ve heard of this song is on this site from TBL.

Could be worse Butters. You could be playing Tennessee Tech and have the off chance that Gus Johnson might be announcing your game. I put in a tweet to Ken Fang to see if we can get the BTN announcer pairings before the weekend starts. Need to know if I have to disconnect my center channel speaker when watching the Hawkeyes.
Please let it be Wayne Larrivee or Tom Hamilton. Anyone but Johnson or Brennaman and I’ll be happy.

yeah, I’m really more excited about the tailgate than the game this weekend. is there decent games during the day saturday or are they all at night? I’m going to need something to keep me entertained during the 8 hours of pre-game I have planned.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:22 AM
So what’s everyone plan for Saturday?
I’ll wake up early, go shopping for some wings, pizza, snacks and beer, put the wings in a crockpot, and watch pre-game until noon kickoff. Then I’ll plop on the couch and crack my first beer.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:22 AM
there isn’t a return because anything we or the afghans do build, it gets blown up by insurgents. it’s a vicious cycle.
then what are we still doing there? really?
August 31st, 2011 at 9:22 AM
And I’ll get this out here now so we can discuss the actual game in Yardwork…
The umpiring crew sucked at Fenway last night. Mo Rivera got calls in the 9th that clearly weren’t strikes. CC got squeezed. So did Lackey. Lackey also should have been ejected for drilling Cervelli. Hopefully they have a better home plate umpire tonight because that was brutal.
There. Unbiased.

Actually, the first two weeks suck for me as a Hawkeye fan. Tennessee Tech first. Then Iowa State and the “interim trophy game.” I think the loser of the game should have to take that god awful new trophy back to their campus and display in prominently instead of this interim nonsense.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:26 AM
For the Flyers fans in attendance, thoughts on the JVR extension?
I don’t like paying him $4.25M for the first 3 years (more than Giroux), but the last 3 could be a steal.

agreed. at least Arkansas gets theirs out of the way first game of the season every year, but they are painful. almost like a pre-season game, yet paying full price for tickets, not to mention if you don’t go they put the game on PPV.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:29 AM
Remember Esquire’s incredible piece about The Falling Man? Well, the photographer has finally spoken. Everything about this story is fascinating.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:29 AM
Nicki Minaj is terrible. Taylor Swift, on the other hand, is awesome. I haven’t brought up seeing her @The Linc this summer…but it was great!!! And it was the shortest line for the Men’s room ever.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:29 AM
So what’s everyone plan for Saturday?
making a good amount of bets, smoking ribs, drinking beer. then heading out sunday for my fantasy draft. cant wait.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:29 AM
Unfortunately, I haven’t been home on the weekends much this summer, so I’ll have to get a little yard work done on Saturday morning. Hitting the store Friday night for booze and food. Hitting the couch at 2:30 (Go Irish!) and may not leave all day unless the wife requests to go out to watch GA/Boise, LSU/OR.
I’m willing to accept any and all good receipes that anyone has to offer.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:29 AM
NDub, you got a good/easy recipe for wings in the crock pot? I don’t think we have easy access to a grill for the tailgate this weekend and I am trying to put together other options for food.

Non-Flyer fan obviously but I like the extension. Even the first couple years. They bought a lot of his UFA years at a really cheap price. However, the fans are going to hate Danny Briere who is making the same cap hit as a Jonathan Toews and isn’t nearly the player.
Looking at their roster for 2012-13 is not so great. 16 roster players for $51M and change. That Timonen contract is just awful. And having a cap hit of nearly $5M on Pronger until he’s 43 (!!) is outrageous. I know the salary dips under $1M a year in the last two years but still. That’s awful.
I won’t even get started on Breezy’s contract.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:30 AM
Some ridiculous calls that Rivera got in the ninth. Who was the homeplate ump?

August 31st, 2011 at 9:31 AM
So…I got offered to move to San Francisco a few days ago, and been mulling it over. No current job or girlfriend or anything really keeping me here, change of scenery would be great, would be staying with my current roommate and a friend from HS.
Only real snag at this point that I see is cost of living going up and just moving to a place that I’ve never even visited before (to be fair, I’ve already done that once by moving to Atlanta – that only lasted for about a year).
Would be moving in November and the idea of avoiding another Minnesota winter sounds awesome. Thoughts?

I am looking for people that would be interested in a $25/week fantasy football challenge. It is a weekly game, not a yearly thing, salary cap based, you pick your team every week. Thru a new Sporting News endeavor, FanDuel.

I can give you my recipe for Awesome Dip that includes bacon drippings and Velvetta cheese.
Ark- If you’re going tailgate with a crock pot, go chili. Much easier to maintain and all you gotta get are some paper bowls and plastic spoons. It also doubles as a dip for taco chips.

Wake up about 6:30 with the boys, watch Avengers on Disney, make breakfast. Then I’ll play with the boys for a while before lunch and the Younger gets put down for a nap. Then I get to goto Town Hall for th e Minny/USC game (and Pint Club), go somewhere for dinner before the night games and then find an establishment that’ll have both games on and good beer on tap. I’m thinking Alary’s.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:33 AM
Rapuano. One inning was especially crazy, where CC got a pitch a foot outside, then 6 inches inside, but then a ball right down the middle in the lower part of the zone called a ball. No conistency whatsover last night.

August 31st, 2011 at 9:35 AM
I had never visited UT/Austin before I enrolled. I transferred in from RPI (upstate NY) ‘cuz I wanted to go far away to a warm place. Best move I’ve ever made.
If there’s a really big salary jump and it’s a good opportunity for you career-wise, I say go for it.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:35 AM
I thought about it, but decided against it for 2 reasons. 1.) the chili affect on me and fellow tailgaters and the lack of actual bathrooms and 2.) it’s supposed to be 94* and I think chili may be a bit much.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:36 AM
Frisco is cool. I’ve been there 4 or 5 times. Always impressed. I get the cost of living issue, but I’d imagine you’d be getting paid more while there, right? If you’ve got no ties, you might as well go. You can always move back if you don’t like it.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:36 AM
Also great to see Cervelli go 3rd person last night, “That’s Cervelli!”
August 31st, 2011 at 9:36 AM
Unless the cost of living thing will make it a real hardship, I’d go for it. If you need to get a temp job while you look for something career wise, you can do it in SF without wasting half your money on gas going to and from work. (assuming you are moving into the city proper)

That Timonen contract is just awful.
Only $3M in real dollars next year, could see him walking away and returning to Europe. Pronger’s deal is going to be an albatross, lot of miles on those tires.
The problem I have with the first 3 years on the JVR extension is my belief that they could have paid him less per year on a 3 year deal. He’s anything by a finished product and they will have some younger players (Vorachek, Simmonds and possible Schenn) in need of extensions within that 3 year window.

that being said, not sure if I personally could move there.

August 31st, 2011 at 9:41 AM
And what would this chart look like?
Drunk driving = 1 game
Assault and battery = 2 games
Strip club shooting = 3 games
“Alleged sexual assault” = 4 games
And so on and so on. Yeah, not sure NFL Legal would really buy into that plan.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:42 AM
My plan for Saturday is to wake up around 8 and make a hearty breakfast. Go for a quick bike ride so I can be back to catch the final hour of Gameday/Big Ten Tailgate (mostly to see what EA is wearing and the always enjoyable Jenn Brown sighting). Pop on the Hawkeye game at 11 with just snacks and finger food.
Nap through the 2:30 games followed by waking up around 4:30-5ish. Got some people coming over for the night games and we’re making ribs, wings, mac n cheese, beans and the ever popular vodka logged watermelon. I have purchased a syringe based upon recommendations of people here to make this a mess free infusion.

I’m probably going to find 4 or 5 games with “patsies” and lay the points, figuring I’ll hit 3 or 4 of them. ALA and NEB are intriguing to me, and I would consider the PSU game as well since JoePa can’t help but run up the score (Ind. St. was one of the worst rushing defenses in 1-AA last year).

Arkbadger – I don’t have a wing recipe. I’ll be with a few buddies, one of whom is an excellent cook and will have his special recipe. I can ask him for it and email you. If I had a choice, I’d just squeeze a bunch of BBQ sauce and hot sauce into the crockpot and toss in the wings on low heat for 2+ hours.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:47 AM
Yeah, if he was already throwing off the mound they might try and rush him into a rehab start before the minor league season is done. But I think it’s likely at this point, if he pitches again in 2011, it’s strictly bullpen.

They bought out some of his UFA years. I’m fine with the contract and his emergence in the playoffs made it much easier to part with Jeff Carter, IMO.
And I wouldn’t dither too much over how the Flyers manage their cap. This past summer, they just traded the two guys who have been the face of the franchise since the lockout. What makes you think Holmgren will hesitate on pulling the trigger on anyone else?

How is that any different than the current drug policy based on number of offenses?
And who said it had to be based on the actual crime committed. They could go off # of misdemeanors/felonies/etc. by class, etc. regardless of the actual charge.
Anything is better than what they’re doing now.

Is there a preferred pineapple to vodka ratio? (i.e.–2 cut pineapples to one fifth of vodka? Or some such alchemy?)
Because this sounds pretty awesome….
August 31st, 2011 at 9:51 AM
I’m fine with the contract and his emergence in the playoffs made it much easier to part with Jeff Carter
JVR and Giroux (and probably Simmonds) are going to have to eat the hard minutes that Carter and Richards played. I think we are going to see offensive regression for the two younguns.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:51 AM
I was going for something easy… there are some pretty decent crock pot pulled pork recipes. It obviously can’t compare to a smoker but who has a portable smoker and 8+ hours of time on their hands during a tailgate? Make up some delicious tangy coleslaw to put on top of the pulled pork.

Alternately, they will also be taking up Richards and Carters PP minutes.
Simmonds is going to provide the jam on the wing that they kind of missed all of last year.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:53 AM
Schenn is going to start the year in the A, right? Flyers don’t want to trot him out there for 4th line minutes I’m guessing.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:53 AM

I think Memphis laid down and died a few games last year. Mississippi St. wants to get up big and stay up big so they can pull their starters (week 2 @ Auburn). So I could see State jumping out to a huge lead early and Memphis not bothering to try and come back.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:57 AM
Looks fun, but they couldn’t get BU or BC? Seems odd to have games at Fenway, but none of the major Boston teams.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:58 AM

August 31st, 2011 at 9:58 AM
Speaking of dips. You guys grill bacon wrapped jalapenos with sour cream in them? Some people call those poppers, i think?
Do the same thing (or just grill/cook the bacon and japs separately), then throw that shit in the blender. Best dip of all time.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:58 AM
oh it is, and like jck said, the ladies love it. you can usually tell how much vodka to use, but I don’t think there is really a correct amount. I usually put it in a couple of those rubbermade containers and put probably a couple shots in each one, don’t really want to overdue it.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:58 AM
Schenn is going to start the year in the A, right? Flyers don’t want to trot him out there for 4th line minutes I’m guessing.
From what I’ve read he’s making the big team.
Alternately, they will also be taking up Richards and Carters PP minutes.
Perhaps more minutes for JVR, but Giroux was playing a fair amount of PP time. Alternatively, they’ll be facing better PKers on PP1 vs. PP2.

August 31st, 2011 at 10:04 AM
Not sure. He probably has the talent to stick…..just maybe not a perfect role.
One need that he definitely answers is that, if the Flyers are going with Briere and Giroux down the middle as their first two centers, they are not going to match up well with the Malkins and Lecavalier’s of the Eastern Conference. Maybe Schenn plays a “Jordan Staal” type of role?

I honestly have no clue. UGA is easily the biggest team Boise has ever played. The stating center for boise is 5-11, 288 pounds (seriously). The 1st and 2nd string NT for UGA are 6-5, 350. Having said that, the Boise DL shit all over VT’s OL last year, and the next time UGA blocks a team of note will be the first in a long time. Then you have Crowell getting the bulk of the carries, and while everyone raves about him, no one actually knows outside of the team as practices are closed off. Boise starts 16 seniors, including 10 on defense. That’s impressive.
But with all of that, I still think UGA should win. They are bigger and faster at pretty much every single position, but it also wouldn’t surprise me to see Boise win by 7-10.
Going. We have half of a row of seats (12) for the game, so I pity any Boise fans that sit near us.
August 31st, 2011 at 10:10 AM

how short are that boise center’s arms? is he a waist bender or a knee bender? I think a 6.5 NT is going to have a hard time staying low, although I imagine 350 is tough to push anywhere.

Saturday and Sunday will be a combo of picking through the piles in my basement to chase out any moisture, replacing the windows in the basement (not due to Irene), and maybe installing a sump pump.
I’m looking forward to catching any of the late games though.
August 31st, 2011 at 10:16 AM
He left for Texas, but the one thing Boise has done better than probably any program in the nation is replace coaches with ones already in the system. They’ve done it since Hawkins left and haven’t skipped a beat. The lack of WRs could cost Boise, though. They are breaking in a new starting (freshman) WR and they don’t have Pettis or Young, two NFL receivers.

Song of the summer was a legitimate three way tie between I’m On One, Beautiful People, and Party Rockin. TBL, you seriously need to stop being old, brah.

There are some games I’d like to erase from my memory bank
/Iowa 6-4 is near the top of the list

Do we have different definitions of ‘drunk’ or something? There’s no way you can properly remember a game if you are ‘drunk’. A little tipsy, of course.

There are going to be some red pants with some puke on them about the 3rd quarter.

The hell? I’ve been d-runk at football games and I still remember specific plays.

I thought that’s what a flask was for

I have to be pretty sloppy not to remember a game. Like really bad blackout level. I can still remember exactly the Willis McGahee screen pass in 2002 against FSU and I was beyond shitfaced that game.

Exactly. This is what we learn in college: How to get obliterated and still know the down and distance.

I can see remembering moments. But Im always pissed at myself when I end up drinking too much and cant remember much detail about how the game progressed.

Exactly. I’m not talking pass-out drunk, because obviously passing out means you aren’t seeing anything, but 12-deep and a few shots? Yes please.

I caught a replay of Wisconsin-Northwestern from last season and realized I didn’t recall most of the first quarter despite being assured that we were there for kickoff…2:30 start times but still getting downtown like you would for an 11:00 game for the win

I can see this for baseball games because a series of small events can lead to run scoring. Keeping score helps. I stopped doing this for a long time, but picked it back up again a couple of years ago.
Football and hockey, I have little trouble remembering the big moments if I’ve been drinking, for whatever reason. Probably because, the scoring events, when they happen, are celebrated like New Year’s Eve.

Stop being old and step away from the computer for more than just a starbucks run and basketball league.

Our friends are getting downtown on Sat at like 8 in the morning. Fuck that noise. I’m not leaving my place until 11:30 and that’s to eat before pounding booze. I figure I’ll have 6 hours or so to drink and that’s good enough for me.
August 31st, 2011 at 11:04 AM
I can see that, it just doesn’t happen to me very often. Sometimes small details are missed but unless we were playing some scrub school I never got past the point of rememebering.

Speaking of booze and the Georgia Dome, I tried to drink myself into forgetting the 2006 Peach Bowl against LSU, but alas I could not.

fuck the Georgia Dome.
