Peter King’s Super Bowl Pick is In
SI’s Peter King has made his Super Bowl prediction – drum roll, please – and he’s got the Falcons beating the Chargers. Having read Jason Lisk’s effusive praise for the Chargers in the last few months, I can buy that pick. Atlanta? Significantly less so. I’ve got the Falcons as only the fourth best team in the NFC behind Green Bay, New Orleans, and Philadelphia. I made it known last year I was not sold on Matty Ice, and while I love the Julio Jones pick, the defense didn’t improve and I can see the Falcons stumbling into the bye week at 4-3 and coming out of it in a must-win game at Indianapolis.
But Atlanta-San Diego is a good pick … simply because everyone else is going with Packers/Eagles vs. Patriots/Steelers. We’ll do our staff picks next week prior to the Thursday season opener, just so everyone can mock them later.
My favorite part of King’s prediction was that he has the Patriots not winning a playoff game for the 4th year in a row.
In non-NFL Sports Illustrated news, Paul Finebaum, a radio host from SEC country, will be writing a weekly column for SI.com.

They aren’t winning anything. The secondary is a mess still and I’m not sure Mularky is ever truly going to air it out and use Roddy, Julio and Harry Douglas correctly.

Which is fucking laughable. Dude is trash.

Does SI not have this up on the website yet? What’s up with that wacky link you sent us to?
The question is, which conference has the better Top 4?
GB, NO, PHI, ATL vs NE, PIT, BAL, SD

I’d say the NFC right now…and +1 for the non-inclusion of the AFC paper champs.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:40 PM
take out the ravens and put in the jets and id go with the AFC.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:40 PM
They will be in a dogfight with NO for the division and then DAL/CHI/NYG for the wildcard. I think they can get ti 11-5, but 10-6 may be more realistic.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:40 PM
I’d go AFC for sure. I could see all of those 4 teams winning the SB, but I can’t say the same for the NFC.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:41 PM
Is it possible to short a football team like in the bond market? I want to take a short position on the Falcons and hold onto it.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:41 PM
Can we all agree that the Bungles are never going to be ranked low enough this year while they’ll be ranked 32nd all season?

Come on husker, the bears are going to be terrible this year. They’re a 6-win team. Maybe 7.

B/c they might only be the 3rd best team in their division.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:46 PM
I’m not saying they will, but it wouldn’t be as surprising as saying the Texans or Chiefs could win it. They have an offense that can put points on the board so if they catch a team at the right time they could do some things.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:47 PM
Teams better than the Bears this season – GB, NO, PHI, DET, STL, TB, ATL
They will barely break 8 wins.

Second year of Bradford, defense got better through the year and created more pressure, really like the Sims-Walker addition. Could be a surprise 9 win team, esp. in the crappy NFC West.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:52 PM
I just don’t buy the Falcons being that good.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:53 PM

August 30th, 2011 at 3:53 PM
Norv Turner will just fuck it up somehow, I think we all know that much.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:53 PM
Chargers lost to the Raiders twice last year. Tehehehehe.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:54 PM
Also, and I know I’m swimming against the tide here: The Saints miss the playoffs, and the Bucs make it in.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:54 PM
lions and texans, baby!
August 30th, 2011 at 3:55 PM
In TBL’s fantasy world, nobody’s talking about the Jets or picking them to go far. They’re flying under the radar you see.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:55 PM
Full Season of Vincent Jackson&Marcus McNeill.Phillip Rivers still playing at a high level. AJ Smith being a douche but having put together a good draft classes(Liguet is looking legit so far in Preseason) & hiring a proven Special Teams coordinator in Rich Bisaccia to shore up what was their only obvious weakness of last year of Special Teams.
Only negatives on them really is that their new defensive coordinator doesn’t exactly create as good defensive as Rivera and this is still a team headed by Norv Turner.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:55 PM
They aren’t a 13-3 team, but they aren’t worse than 10-6 either I don’t think. We’ll see if they actually open up the offense. I’m skeptical that they will. Mullarky just doesn’t like to do that.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:55 PM
Berman is still taking the ’9ers and the Bills, right??
August 30th, 2011 at 3:55 PM
Cardinals, Super Bowl winners. Book it. Over the Raiders.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:55 PM
What the fuck has SD done that makes you think they can win the Super Bowl?
I think Norv Turner’s record in close games is percentage points better than Aaron Rodgers, so there’s that.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:55 PM
really like the Sims-Walker addition
Butterfingers.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:56 PM
re: Bears and the playoffs
Last year everyone (including me, excepting TBL) said the Bears weren’t going to the playoffs. They won the division. I think they’re going to struggle again but it’s going to be because they don’t have a threat for Jay to throw to consistently.
I will be happy to go on the record as saying Jay Cutler will throw 2x as many TDs and INTs this year and complete, at minimum, 60% of his passes. Jay won’t be the reason the Bears struggle.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:56 PM
I would bet 10 mortgage payments that Detroit doesn’t win more games than Chicago…and I agree with your assessment of Chicago.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:56 PM
I don’t think Atlanta’s gonna come out of the NFC, and I have even less faith in Philly. I really think it’s NO or GB.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:57 PM
Good luck with that bankruptcy though.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:57 PM
The Falcons haven’t been the same since Andre Rison left.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:57 PM
AFC. I think the top 5, in what ever order, are GB, NO, NE, PIT and BAL.
PHI, ATL and SD are on the next tier, with maybe IND and NYJ.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:57 PM
2x as many TDs to INTs this season*

August 30th, 2011 at 3:59 PM
Seeing as the Bucs took the Falcons to the wire in both their games last year and probably should of won, I find this funny..
Only games they were seriously outclassed in were Steelers &first Saints game last year
August 30th, 2011 at 3:59 PM
/high fives Jay V
They’re still the Lions. And Matt Stafford is the QB in the NFC North that should be having his toughness questioned. You can throw all over that team and they still don’t have a healthy 2-back combo. Lisk’s post on committees being the en vogue thing sold me on the Lions not taking that step this year.
They’re the new Texans.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:59 PM
you are clueless….

//laughs hysterically
This, honestly, has me questioning a San Diego pick to the Super Bowl. That, and the weather if they don’t get the #1 seed and have to go to either New England or Pittsburgh.
Then again, not sure many people were touting Mike McCarthy as a Super Bowl caliber coach a year ago.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:59 PM
Well, I don’t have 10 sitting in the bank right now … well done if you do.
August 30th, 2011 at 4:00 PM
Did they win those games? Did they beat Atlanta?
August 30th, 2011 at 4:00 PM
Seriously, Norv is proven garbage.
August 30th, 2011 at 4:00 PM
That’s who I’m debating between for Super Bowl picks whenever that post goes up. Count me out of PIT, NE and BAL. New England’s defense sucks.
August 30th, 2011 at 4:00 PM
norv isn’t a problem.
August 30th, 2011 at 4:00 PM
Nah…I’m cool with Jose…there are some toxic clowns lurking though…
August 30th, 2011 at 4:01 PM
I’d be more worried about their pass rush or lack there of with Rivera leaving. They really need English to turn the corner.
August 30th, 2011 at 4:01 PM
McCarthy didn’t have a proven streak of failures going against him though. Norv’s team will have to win in spite of him. McCarthy’s team was indifferent.
August 30th, 2011 at 4:03 PM
My picks would have to be Green Bay and the J-E-T-S in the Super Bowl, Homeboy. Why? GB lost a lot of players last year to injury, Rodgers is the best QB in the NFC as are their defense being the best in the NFC. Jets? Because I want to see TBL go nuts with 4 posts per day leading up the the game then his head exploding when GB routs them!
August 30th, 2011 at 4:03 PM
Norv has worn the stink so much longer. Nothing will change that predictable stench.
August 30th, 2011 at 4:03 PM
The words “toxic clown” have been in my head since that Ced Benson post first went up yesterday. Currently Tay Zonday’s “Toxic Clowns” (Chocolate Rain Rmx) is in heavy rotation in my brain

August 30th, 2011 at 4:06 PM
Yeah, I was reminded by a friend the other day that, in the season before getting the Packers gig, he had “led” the Niners offense (and Alex Smith) through the 2005 season when Smith had a 1/11 TD/INT ratio.

I will fight you to the death over this. Anything banana flavored should be shot straight to the sun.
straight banana, yes. But strawberry banana swirled? Divine.

LEGOs were will always be awesome when we were kids.
Fixed, for truth
as one who has both at his disposal, the bigger chunkier ones are better

My son is heavy into Legos right now and Legos are every bit as awesome as I remembered as a kid.
And those Lego stores now, with how you can buy them piecemeal in a bucket for like $13, are incredible.

I bet you have a tajazzled sour path kid on you
Is tajazzled a bejeweled taint?
August 30th, 2011 at 4:49 PM
Agree to disagree. Can’t stand anything with any trace of artifical banana flavor in it.

My son will have nothing to do with the big legos. “They’re baby legos!”

do I have this wrong, or would Peach flavored skoal like a word with you…
August 30th, 2011 at 4:53 PM
You are 100% correct on that. I was just commenting on the fact that my son won’t play with them because he perceives them for younger kids.
My son has learned many new and colorful words after I’ve unknowingly stepped on a small lego and had it lodge in my heel.

All the candy corn ever was made in 1958. Every year it is simply thrown away and recycled for next halloween.

Mularky is ever truly going to air it out and use Roddy, Julio and Harry Douglas correctly.
I assume you mean never.
True – for good reason. Keep the clock running and the defense off the field. They’ve got a great run game – no reason to change just yet.

The trend for Super Bowls lately is for a team that took some steps back for a couple of years coming out of the blue to appear in the Super Bowl.
10: Pack hadn’t won a playoff game since Favre left, Steelers stepped back in 09
09: Saints hadn’t made the playoffs since 06, Colts had underachieved since 06
08: Steelers stepped back after 05, Cardinals came out of nowhere
etc. etc. etc.
That being said, here are my 5 most likely Super Bowl matchups:
1. Saints/Chargers
2. Cowboys/Patriots
3. Giants/Ravens
4. Eagles/Colts
5. any variety of 1-4

I gotta go with Packers vs Chargers
