somebody point me to an NFL contract that had guaranteed money or bonus money that came in seasons after non-guaranteed money. Just name me a guy. Not a roster bonus guaranteed next season, but a roster bonus guaranteed in season 4 of that contract.

Dirt, just so we’re clear, there are several big contracts out there (one example, Eli) where bonus money is prorated equallly over the entire deal. So there’s never a point where you get out without a major cap hit.

Obviously the wisdom of such deals depends on the player, the length of the deal, and the way the rest of the roster is constructed.

If I signed a deal in 2008 that prorates my signing bonus (whatever the guaranteed portion of the deal is) over 3 years, but has LTBE money in 2013 that kicks in if I play X amount of snaps in 2011, then there is a new cap hit in 2013 if I achieved that but get cut before the 2013 season, yeah? I really don’t know.

Remember that Vernon Gholston Jets one, where if he got a sack or recovered a fumble at any point with the Jets, he got 9 million? That was a likely to be earned incentive.
Just like the reason Nmandi Asomough got to opt out with the Raiders, because he didn’t meet some “likely to be met” individual performance standards, like tackles + interceptions + passes defended, which did damage to his perceived value in the long run.

a likely to be earned incentive is just that. It’s not a number so high that you become too expensive to continue to employ, or it’s an offseason workout bonus that you can have if you show the dedication to show up.
Or it’s a roster bonus next year when you got fatly bonused this year.

You hear all the time about roster bonuses, workout bonuses, etc. But those aren’t guaranteed unless they are called guaranteed bonuses. If they’re called “likely to be earned,” then they are obviously not guaranteed. If this guy breaks his neck, they aren’t paying him a workout bonus in the summer of 2013.

There are LTBE incentives of 1,040,000 in 2011, 1,102,000 in 2012, 1,064,000 in 2013, 1,076,000 in 2014, and 588,000 in 2015. There are escalators of up to 1M in 2009, 2013, and 2014; 1.25M in 2015, and 1.5M in 2016.

What I never had clarified for me is when those go from “Likely” to “Guaranteed”. For example, when the contract is signed there is a 2012 “LTBE” bonus, but is that earned in 2011? If so, if the player is cut, then is their dead money in 2012 because he earned it in 2011?

when you do that, you hand the guy a check for the money, or you are just futzing with the bookkeeping on money you’ve already paid him. You aren’t actually promising to pay him Tuesday for a hamburger today. All you spread out is the cap hit.

The team doesn’t get hurt real bad, but you do have some wacky stuff on the back end sometimes.
