Stafford looks amazing out there. Just needs to stay healthy. That defense is only gonna get better when KVB and Fairley get back out there.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:06 AM
I feel like there is a pretty good story behind this.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:07 AM
Office is closed today but gotta work from home. Any movie suggestions for me?
August 29th, 2011 at 8:09 AM
Everybody on the east coast ok after Irene? My area of VA lost power at 3:30 on Saturday, but no significant damage. Lukewarm showers until tomorrow!
August 29th, 2011 at 8:10 AM
Wenger not doing everything possible to get Wesley Sneijder on that team should solidify the fact that he just does not want to stay a float this year. But Man U is really, really, really good.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:12 AM
you haven’t had power since 3:30 saturday? geez. do you have a little kid? how’s he handling it?
August 29th, 2011 at 8:12 AM
It was 112 degrees in Austin yesterday… I didn’t leave my apartment once.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:13 AM
We lost power for almost a month after Hurricane Ike. Fun times.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:14 AM
Imagine if Colin Cowherd’s target demographic was Alabama fans.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:15 AM
No kid(s) for me. Spent yesterday cleaning the in-laws yard of downed limbs. Showered with the last of the hot water afterward. I look like a bit of caveman at work today.
Good Christ. It hit 104 here once earlier this summer, but 112 seems mythical.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:16 AM
We lose power for about a week and a half during most hurricanes down here.
/no–not fun
August 29th, 2011 at 8:17 AM
Then I feel I can ask you about the feasibility and cost of generator power for extended periods. Let’s start with, say, a week?
August 29th, 2011 at 8:18 AM
Absolutely, his show is pretty awesome as well…seen him live a couple times and always has fresh material, sumbitch works for a living
August 29th, 2011 at 8:18 AM

August 29th, 2011 at 8:21 AM
Get a gas generator and about 10 5-gallon tanks that are always filled. When nobody has power, you can’t get gas, and the one station that is open will have lines a mile long.

August 29th, 2011 at 8:23 AM
So, anything happen this weekend?
August 29th, 2011 at 8:23 AM
We don’t have near the hurricane activity it sounds like you do, but after this experience it seems like something I might want to have ready in the new house.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:24 AM
I don’t remember the cost of generators, but they were very hard to come by and of course the prices were being jacked up in the aftermath. Strangely, our next door neighbors got their power back much more quickly and allowed us to run an extension cord for vital stuff. I had no kids at the time and was “working” at online poker, so I just went to my tennis club every day and worked/showered/ate there and didn’t bother with a generator. Anything over a week will be tough with no generator. I’m sure it’s wearing on you already.

If that guy killed 600 Americans, he’d be the leading story in the USA from now til the election.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:25 AM
his last episode (ducks/USO) was his best yet.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:28 AM
Watched The A-Team yesterday – went in with zero expectations and was surprised that it was half-decent/entertaining.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:28 AM
A little bit. Being a work helps some. Hearing these stories of a week or more without power makes a long weekend seem like a piece of cake. Provided you don’t have an essential need for electricity.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:28 AM
damn. did you go stay with family? At my wit’s end yesterday, I told the wife we should consider going to her mom’s house (45 mins away). i didn’t want to have to deal with a wet basement, so my solution was to get away (which probably says something about me).
power came back on like 30 mins later.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:29 AM
Because it won’t be profitable and the NFL has no reason to want to subsidize something like that as long as college football does it for them.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:30 AM
generator from Home Depot: $500.
can run for 13 hours straight (at least this model) if the gas is fully loaded.
it was strictly for the sump pump. i didn’t bother inquire about what else it could do. but when home depot gets them again – neighbor had to drive 2 hrs West to get one – I will buy one.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:30 AM
That was a quick discussion.

It’s not like they’re going to remember most of what they learned after all the concussions!
Watched The A-Team yesterday – went in with zero expectations and was surprised that it was half-decent/entertaining.
Been catching it and surprised as well. I think the key is that it’s a comedy and not an action movie.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:32 AM
brutal. my next question: so do you just toss all the crap so you don’t risk mold getting on the carpets (rolled up, as the basement isn’t finished) and boxes?
yes, I’m the type of guy who saves most of the boxes from big-ticket items (like TVs). i’m going to HATE lugging all the crap we have out to the trash. no door in the basement.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:34 AM
No Onion Bag today because Mr. Duffy is moving, but people are talking about Arsenal, right?
Ugh. Don’t remind me. Fucking 8 to fucking 2. 8-2!!
Three days before the transfer window closes and they better not fuck around.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:35 AM
another big 12-2 pipe dream that isn’t close to being true.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:35 AM
Well, we’re in a somewhat unique situation because we’re literally in the middle of finishing the basement. So luckily there isn’t much down there, however now we need to see what damage there is to the new walls we just put up.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:37 AM

Richard Justice crucified the Longhorn fan base in that article, and justifiably so. Their short-sighted hubris is stupefying.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:41 AM
We lost power at my fantasy draft on Saturday night, but my apt. was fine all of Saturday and yesterday.
Re: the A Team – heard it was a fun popcorn flick as well. I DVR’d the Social Network last night, so might watch that sometime today as well.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:43 AM
We got wind, but never a drop of rain — which stayed about 10-20 miles east for the entire day yesterday. The skyline was pretty cool, relative calm over Rochester with some evil looking shit on the horizon all day.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:44 AM
I wouldn’t disagree with that.

Flying home today, and I’ve got water in my basement waiting for me.
Sorry to hear that.
I used to work with a water damage cleanup/restoration company. Make sure your insurance agent or the cleanup company do you right. All kinds of little fees are covered (moving furniture and boxes; ripping out carpet; other demo, etc). If you do any of that yourself, make sure it’s itemized and you get the $$ for it. It won’t sound like a lot but it can add up – like the difference between putting in ceramic tile instead of replacing carpet.
When you get power, make sure they put enough dehumidifiers to completely dry it out. And never use those dehu’s you get from HD, Lowes and Sears – they do very little and the power they consume is incredible.

neighbor had a fantasy draft yesterday. had to try and make do on his wife’s blackberry. he’s in a keeper league with Peyton, Chris Johnson & Shady McCoy, so I think he’ll be fine.
i have 3 drafts this weekend. so pumped.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:56 AM
I can’t speak for everyone in my area (DC), but we had some rain and wind, but not much damage or power loss.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:59 AM
Got lucky with Irene where I am. Everything bad was to the west of us. Never lost power, there was some local flooding but luckily not at my house.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:59 AM
I hope they’re auctions and not knuckle-dragger snake drafts.

*not that awesome. except for the golf part.

Also, get a thick chain and padlock, and lock that sumbitch to a thick pole, because if you don’t, some asshole will steal it.

August 29th, 2011 at 9:04 AM
Never had any serious water problems at my house, but when we moved in the sump pump used to run all the time and the yard was always wet. Our house is near the bottom of slight hill so the neighbors’ yards drained into ours. Best thing I ever did was extend the sump pump drainage pipe to the property line and install a drainage tile on the side of our yard.

A quick discussion with a non accurate response. Start off in small markets with small venues, and they can most definitely succeed.

Right now the NFL is happy to work hand in hand with the NCAA. So no chance it happens.
The NFL doesn’t want/need their own Developmental League (even if they should have it).

Chicago had some of the most beautiful weather of the summer. Almost no humidity, nice breezes, tons of sunshine, temps in the mid-to-high 70′s. Have had the AC off for days now!!
August 29th, 2011 at 9:19 AM
Yes. But your opinion on that does not surprise me.

I didn’t watch a second of the VMAs but it certainly felt like I did what with Twitter and all. I haven’t watched the VMAs since 1999. Let me know when they book the Rolling Stones.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:25 AM
I don’t know if the NFL doesn’t want one or it’s more of a gentleman’s agreement between the two entities. With the NFL having it’s own network with plenty of time to fill during the middle of the week and the opportunity for more gambling avenues, they could make money.

SC – I bet 85% of the people there didn’t know who Brian May was.
/sighs at ignorance of pretty much everybody
August 29th, 2011 at 9:28 AM
I’m not sure what the point of that was, but whatever. Breaking Bad can get away with a ton more because it’s not on network TV, where the FCC keeps its iron fist looming.
Shit got intense last night.

A&M is bailing a year after Texas negotiated a higher rights fee for the Aggies so that the A&M athletic department could get out of the red. This despite A&M not really brining anything to the table media-wise (remember they didn’t have enough interest to get all of their games televised).

I watched an episode of Entourage for the first time in about 6 years last night (new roommate is a fan of the show). There wasn’t even a pair of tits to be seen! And Bobby Flay? Really?
I made the right choice discontinuing that one. I guess at least I know Mrs. Ari’s name now. She looked a lot better a few years ago. Still can get it, but not as much as she used to.

When you consider the obvious desire for more NFL product, I think a NFL-DL or Triple A level would be attractive. Put them in cities like Memphis, Austin, Birmingham, etc and make some money off of fans who want to see the NFL logo.
But, as you said, that would cut into the college football pool. How many “student-athletes” would rather go play in Las Vegas for 2-3 years, make money and not worry about classes rather than go study and have to go to classes?

Didn’t the Arena League recently go bankrupt and cancel an entire season?
August 29th, 2011 at 9:32 AM
Ugh. The scene with Drama and Dice last night was painful. A close 2nd was the scene with E and Darlene’s old boyfriend from Roseanne. Way to bring out the big stars for the last season.

Elmhurst College will quickly realize they aren’t allowed to ask about a prospective student’s sexual orientation, the same as it is in the workplace. It feels like the the school has some underlying motive and could be exposed for possible discrimination practices.

Butters, were you the one on Twitter last night that mentioned how he only shows up for meals? I laughed at that. At least we don’t have to deal with the baby much.
The last scene was great. Might be a little bit of a stretch for Hank to piece things together that quickly, but I’ll play along.
I can’t imagine that spoiled anything for anyone.

I kind of feel bad for Curb to be jammed between True Blood and Baby Bro. LD deserves better. Hell Hung would be a better lead in.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:36 AM
Guessing you haven’t followed A&M athletics all that much. Texas negotiated equal financial footing so they could keep the Texas & Friends conference together. Yeah, A&M was in the red due to heavy investment in their own athletic programs outside of football. That was a calculated move they knew they could recoup in years to come through revenue generated by conference alignment.
Staring down your nose and claiming that UTexas extended an olive branch to A&M is flat out horseshit. UTexas is only interested in their own school, and it served their purpose to get A&M paid.
A&M (and frankly, Oklahoma, too) has no reason to stick around the Texas & Friends conference no matter what the windfall is. That conference isn’t beneficial to anyone but UTexas.
The reasons A&M struggled to get games televised in ’10? The Big 12 had a shit TV deal. The Big 12 has no network. They had weak warm-up opponents. The eyeballs were there to watch, but when UTexas gerrymanders the TV deal, of course it will work out in their favor.
Pull your head out of your ass.

Who else didn’t know that the VMAs were on last night? I had a friend text me about Beyonce and i thought she was at a Beyonce concert. I also wondered why there would be a concert of Ne-yo, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and Adele.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:36 AM
Anyone else have high hopes for Pan-Am or The Playboy Club? I really wish the latter were on AMC or HBO so we could take full advantage of the nudity factor but I suppose I can deal with network TV.
Going to try and get in on the ground floor for a few series this fall. Once baseball is over, I need something to watch during the week. Hockey can only fill so much space.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:37 AM

To me the surprise is that they’re eagerly joining the SEC when everyone admits that the SEC is tough as hell every year. It’s one thing being the 3rd best team in a weakened Big XII. It’s another thing to be the 6th-7th best team in the SEC — which has to be happy because signing them pries open the Texas doors to their coaches for recruiting.
A&M may be cutting off their nose to spite UT.

People in those cities already have their football allegiance, in the form of Go Tigers, Hook ‘Em, and Roll Tide. There is no amount of money that the NFL can throw to make fans in cities root for a minor league team over their universities.
The effort and money it would take the NFL to provide a viable minor league system would be mind-boggling. Especially when they see that they already have one in place, and they don’t have to pay for it.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:39 AM
It sounds like you are talking about guys who’s priority is making the NFL, rather than getting and education and degree, right?
And for those guys, the NCAA will still be considered a better option wouldn’t it? Better competition, more NFL scouts, no chance of this league disbanding and leaving you high and dry (and unable to play in the NCAA).
August 29th, 2011 at 9:39 AM
YYSA and Mr. C – agreed on both counts. Adele is the shit. Amazing voice, great songs..and hey, she actually writes all of her material!

Hence why the NFL was all willing to enforce Pryor’s suspension.
Trust me, I’m not in favor of an NFL-DL. I’m just proposing the “what if?” Ultimately, fans have their rooting interests and are prone to not changing them.
Who else didn’t know that the VMAs were on last night?
Given all the chatter on Twitter last night, I knew. The backlash was great. I hope the backlash against the backlash is just as good.

Thank you SG!

The UFL and Arena league have an age requirement of 18, thats it. Last I checked they are both barely hanging on and losing money. And NFL Europe failed. The market has spoken, they dont want second rate pro football.
Hours of pretty good sustained wind yesterday, lots of trees down. Power was mostly on all day though.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:44 AM
Blame America for this, not network TV…NBC’s tried with Community and Parks & Rec but the populace would rather watch glorified talent shows
August 29th, 2011 at 9:44 AM
pssh…beyonce’s pregnant and thinks it’s impressive? i know this irish catholic chick that’s been shitting out kids on the reg. must be up to fifteen by now.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:45 AM
Last I knew it was a flat pay scale. $400 a game, or something like that. Straight cash, homey.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:45 AM
I meant in terms of actually having multiple races there but keeping them separated. They even had a white crowd and a black crowd.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:45 AM
Louis CK is the funniest standup comedian alive, and I don’t think its even debatable. This isn’t a radical opinion. Chris Rock is only other possible answer.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:45 AM
I hate that unimportant things like the VMAs, Bieber and all those teen skanks, and other shitty pop culture items usually lead the way on twitter.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:46 AM
large and in charge.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:46 AM
Crazy fucker probably got this idea from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:47 AM
No. its not close. 2-1/2 shows does not make a great station. Even if one of those shows is amazing.
Ok I’ll give ya Louie and The League but don’t event try to tell me Its Always Sunny is still funny.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:47 AM
I don’t think it’s outrageous to think that aTm can compete in the SEC over the long haul. How much will their recruiting improve in Texas as a result of the new conference affiliation? That’s the million dollar question.
As for the SEC, with aTm’s huge student body, large alumni base (many of whom live in top ten markets Dallas and Houston) and 20 plus million people in the state, I think it’s a great move.

August 29th, 2011 at 9:48 AM
I’m aware of the Billy Liucci talking points but that doesn’t explain why a Texas Tech/A&M tilt in late October doesn’t even get a pay per view option, if the eyeballs were supposedly there.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:48 AM
All of this. I think the only shows I watch on network TV are Modern Family and Community. AMC, FX, HBO, and Showtime get all the rest of my business.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:49 AM
Memphis doesn’t give two shits about Tigers football, but I get your point.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:50 AM
I assume the BET awards would trump MTV in that regard.
I meant in terms of actually having multiple races there but keeping them separated. They even had a white crowd and a black crowd
They got nothing on the Source awards from the 90s. They didn’t just segregate by race. They segregated by coast, by city and by neighborhood.
By the time people had their seats, they were surrounded by other people from their own bloc. It was the only way to keep the peace!

Wilfred, Sons of Anarchy, Justified, Archer. Its always Sunny was painful last season but I am hopeful for Fat Mac
August 29th, 2011 at 9:51 AM
dee being preggers made for a strange dynamic.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:53 AM
I am waiting to see what this season is like before I pass judgement. last season was pretty weak, but the seasons before that didn’t disappoint me.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:53 AM
How does everyone watch TV? DVR/Tivo? Or are you in front of the TV at the appropriate time?
August 29th, 2011 at 9:54 AM
blindfolded.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:55 AM
I’ve only seen one of these shows. I really am out of the loop in terms of TV watching.
/saw Justified, hated it
August 29th, 2011 at 9:55 AM
anyone know when this starts up again? I am ready for Raylon to start shooting fools up.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:56 AM
DVR. I haven’t watched a commercial in 3 years.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:56 AM
Anyone seen the movie Triangle? Thoughts?

And with all those positives, A&M couldn’t make a move for Big XII dominance? Not even with Texas continuously hampered by Mack Brown? Hell, I remember Texas Tech and Oklahoma State rising up for about 5 minutes to be at the forefront.
Yes, A&M is a major school and will reap benefits from being in the SEC — that TV contract being the #1 benefit. But it works both ways. Now you’re going to have Les Miles, Nick Saban and every other SEC coach in your backyard, pilfering talent from all over Texas.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:57 AM
It’s Yes, Always Sunny had mediocre season….but the episode with the boat was top 5 in series history.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:57 AM
Serious question. If there was a draft of all the players in the NFL by the GM’s. Would Suh be the first or 2nd non qb taken?
August 29th, 2011 at 9:59 AM
He’s fucking dirty!

i’m guessing around March. F/X tends to split its drama shows up. They’ll have Sons of Anarchy from September through December and then Justified from March through May.

Both. If all possible I try to watch, but if sports are on I will DVR and watch later.

Sadly, he didn’t break Tom Brady’s leg in 9 places over the weekend. Kid can’t do anything right.
August 29th, 2011 at 10:01 AM
Would like to try my homemade hard cider?
August 29th, 2011 at 10:02 AM
Joe Thomas, Jake Long deserve to be in this discussion.
August 29th, 2011 at 10:04 AM
I find myself using the On Demand feature of my cable all the time. Most of the shows mentioned here I’ve never seen. Not because I’m not interested, but mainly I get into other stuff before TV. It seems overwhelming trying to keep up with TV.
August 29th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
that’s not a serious question at all. that’s a fantasy world question.
August 29th, 2011 at 10:08 AM
Louis CK is the funniest comedian alive?
Only because Mitch Hedberg is dead.
This + 100
Also, Matt Stafford is the Tom Brady of the preseason. Tom Brady remains the Tom Brady of the real season.
August 29th, 2011 at 10:08 AM
Why does it matter if NFL-DL games get ratings? Why would those games even need to be televised? Minor league baseball games are never on television, and that league serves it purpose just fine.
August 29th, 2011 at 10:09 AM
I’m with you here. Keeping up with Mad Men is about the only thing I’m capable of. Pretty much since I graduated college, I’ve only kept up with 1 or 2 shows at a time. It was LOST and 24 at first. Now it’s just Mad Men.
I occasionally will OnDemand or HBO Go an episode of Curb, but that’s really it. Sports and Food Network dominate my TV during the week.
August 29th, 2011 at 10:09 AM
mmm, yes…the village just became so pedestrian. the smell of beggar forced me to manhattan even though it’s filled with new money.
August 29th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
Anyone seen the movie Triangle? Thoughts?
Are you talking about the 2009 movie about the people on the sailboat who end up on the ocean liner? I caught it one night on cable and ended up watching it over and over whenever it came on. Mesmerizing. And I later realized that’s the same actress from “30 Days of Night” (Melissa George).
August 29th, 2011 at 10:12 AM
And Ngata.

Yep thats the one. You should also check out Time Crimes. Its foreign (Spanish I believe) but awesome none the less

I have no fear of the subtitle. Probably half of my movie collection consists of Kurosawa (with some Clouzot thrown in for good measure). But I won’t go near a foreign film if it’s dubbed.
August 29th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
They’re already there. LSU and Bama have been in the Houston area for years.
August 29th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
Scouts are going where ever the talent is. Also the players in this league would be running NFL systems. There wouldn’t be any need in determining how a spread QB’s performance would translate to the NFL.
August 29th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
Richard Justice crucified the Longhorn fan base in that article, and justifiably so. Their short-sighted hubris is stupefying.
ut’s fanbase has always been horribly arrogant. but that still doesnt take away the fact that this is a horrible, stupid move for aggie.
