Future Basketball Star* Mitch McGary Shattered a Backboard and Needed 37 Stitches
Mitch McGary is one of the jewels of the 2012 recruiting class – a rugged, 6-foot-10 power forward who is athletic and kind of reminds me of Josh McRoberts (I know, another white guy!) on video. McGary is coveted by everyone, and has offers from Duke, Kentucky, and North Carolina, among others. McGary is a lefty, but can finish with both hands and runs the floor well. Tyler Hansbrough comparisons abound. Anyway, McGary shattered a backboard over the weekend. [via Ballin is a Habit]
* Definitely not a given, considering how large, dominant high school players don’t always translate to the guard-driven college game.

Seems like very strong d-bag potential in that interview. Should fit right in at Duke.
Then Coach K can tell us “Mitch is just a really special, special guy. The way he was able to bounce back from his near-death experience when he was almost sliced into a thousand pieces by a backboard is just an inspiration to us all. He’s got such a big heart. The way he responded to this crisis is just the epitome of what it means to be a winner and a team player. To see him there buried under those razor-sharp shards of glass it’s like our whole team was bleeding there with him. And he’s a really special kid.”

Rumor is he will end up at: Kentucky, Maryland or Florida.
Those three plus Michigan, Duke and UNC are on his final list. Offers from everyone but he has cut it to six schools.

he had major ADHD issues in HS, couldn’t qualify for 2011 where he was in the 60 something range I believe as a prospect. Reclassified, grades amazingly went from D’s to A’s at prep school.
Now he is 19, playing against 16 and 17 yrs old in AAU and is the greatest player ever. His game is based on aggression and tenacity so I am curious how well it translates once he is playing against people his age and older as well as his size. I have my doubts whether he is really one of the top 5 players in the county.
My guess he ends up at Maryland, they have been breaking every phone call rule to call him every day. Wouldn’t be shocked if that was the only shady thing going on in this recruitment.

That wasn’t strong. All he did was hang on the rim.

If the staff was blatantly breaking a rule and you know about it than the NCAA would know about it. UMD was recruiting the kid before any other major program was. They were also recruiting him when Gary Williams was still around and no matter what anyone wants to say about Williams he did not get dirty when recruiting. In fact the general problem that UMD fans had with Williams is that he did not spend enough time recruiting.
Having said all that most UMD fans think he is going to end up at Florida. He likes how Donovan has coached big men who have made it to the NBA and he likes the UF co-eds.

I’m disappointed the incredibly topical Clerks joke didn’t make the post.

that isn’t true at all J. sears plenty of schools were on him before Maryland. Indiana, Purdue and plenty of other schools were recruiting him as a 2011 but once he couldn’t qualify they backed off. Maryland got into the mix after he reclassified.
If you think Mark T. is on the up and up, well I can’t help you there. It was well known in recruiting circles they were making it clear he was a priority by using bat phones and going above and beyond. Using the defense of the NCAA would be on them is a joke, because the NCAA would be on every school then. Plenty of easy ways to skirt the rules.
I will be interested to see if Duke and UNC stay in this race, my guess is they both back off as history has shown they do when recruiting goes into a shady area.
Michigan could be a player as well, have heard the florida chatter as well, but still don’t think that will happen.

I would have to go back and check but I am pretty sure his first offer came from an instate school, I believe it was Indiana, then it was pulled down the line due to circumstances with the family.
