A Thought About the New Orleans Saints: Reloading for Another Super Bowl Run
Our 2011 NFL previews roll on. You can view the entire list at the bottom of this post. If you have beef with them, direct that ire at Jason Lisk.
Since 1970, eight teams have appeared in a Super Bowl, failed to return the following season, and then bounced back with another Super Bowl run in year two. Most recently, of course, is last year’s Pittsburgh Steelers, who followed up a Super Bowl win over Arizona by barely missing the playoffs at 9-7, before winning the AFC again last year. What are New Orleans’ chances for a bounce back to the Super Bowl? Let’s review why they slipped a little in 2010.
On the surface, New Orleans didn’t appear to have that much of a drop off. However, the Saints drew a pretty easy schedule last year, and they managed to go 11-5 with several close victories (6-2 in one score games). New Orleans then suffered a bad defeat in the playoffs against Seattle, when the banged up secondary struggled.
The record covered up some of the problems that the Saints had in 2010. On defense, they pulled off a rare feat. The Saints managed to lead the league defensively in fewest touchdowns allowed, while also finishing dead last in passes intercepted. It was quite a change from the year before, when an opportunistic defense was 3rd in interceptions, and had 5 defensive scores in the regular season, plus the defining play of the Super Bowl–Tracy Porter’s clinching interception return for touchdown.
Part of that is teams chose to run on the Saints more frequently in an attempt to shorten the number of possessions. Most teams with 11 wins will have faced an above average number of pass attempts, as the opponent is playing from behind. The Saints, though, faced the 4th fewest pass attempts in the league, more than only Oakland, Buffalo, and Denver. Two of those were bad teams that had horrible rush defenses, so it makes sense. New Orleans run defense wasn’t horrible like Denver or Buffalo, but it wasn’t able to get off the field in many situations. The Saints also had a total of 33 sacks, and had to rely on a variety of players to achieve it, as no one had more than 6 (DT Sedrick Ellis). When a defensive tackle, middle linebacker, and strong safety are among the top 4 on the team in sacks, it speaks to a lack of pressure from the usual sources and a defense where defensive coordinator Gregg Williams had to scheme to create pressure.
Fast forward to this year, and the team drafted DE Cameron Jordan in the first round, and added both Shaun Rogers and Aubrayo Franklin at the defensive tackle positions, in an effort to shore up the middle so teams cannot pound them to control the clock and keep the offense at bay. The deeper rotation should also help create more pressure and free the ends, even without a dominant edge rusher.
On offense, the issues largely centered around the injuries at the running back position, which created consistency issues for the passing game. Drew Brees had a relative off year only by his own standards as the offensive efficiency dipped a little from the Super Bowl year, and his interceptions rose as he faced more pressure without a consistent run game.
To address that, the team traded back into the first round to pick 2009 Heisman winner Mark Ingram to be a pounding back, running behind one of the best interior lines in guards Carl Nicks and Jahri Evans, plus newcomer Olin Kreutz at center. If Ingram lives up to the expectations and Pierre Thomas is healthier to provide a 1-2 combination, the offense should be more explosive, especially when coupled with a deep receiving group and an emerging Jimmy Graham at tight end.
Chase Stuart has New Orleans as his Super Bowl favorite. I’m still pondering my picks, but I have them neck and neck with Green Bay. Philadelphia got a lot of the headlines this offseason, but New Orleans methodically addressed key issues that caused them to slip from Super Bowl winner to merely a playoff team. On paper, and so far in the preseason, the returns suggest a team that could bounce back to elite status. We won’t have to wait long to find out how Green Bay and New Orleans match up, as the season opener looks to be about as good as you could hope.

They looked pretty sharp on offense last night. Ingram is going to be a beast.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
Peyton is off the PUP list. That vaults Indy to the top of the AFC in my opinion.
/hanging on by a thread
August 29th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
Yep. Really well done. That division looks tough, even with one potential doormat.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
I’d pick them to win the South and have home field throughout the playoffs. They seem loaded to me.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
Offense looked great last night. Couldn’t stop the run worth a damn though. No Franklin, but still. I think I’m going with a New Orleans/Baltimore SB
August 29th, 2011 at 12:37 PM
I thought so too. Brees looked really good in the few minutes I watched.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:37 PM
One superbowl does not change the fact that they are the Aints. Something will go wrong, its always does.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
This team is pretty good. I like the Ingram pick on draft day and I think they should be a contender in the NFC
August 29th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
Keep forgetting they have Ingram. And Sproles. They are going to be so fucking bomb squad this year.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
I desperately want Brees in fantasy this year because I think that offense is going to be scary, scary good. Definitely see the Saints going to the NFC Championship this year, perhaps the Super Bowl.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
Speaking of last night, how about that Taiwan Jones cat for the Raiders? It’s only preseason, but damn. Looks good.
The Saints will be part of the Bears 1-2 / 0-3 start. That game is going to be ugly. I’ll quietly root for NO as Brees is my QB in the ole fantasy world this season.

Everyone keeps talking about how loaded they are but I just don’t see it. Picked up some old, below averages vets (Rogers, Kreutz) and some iffy draft picks. Never a good sign when you’re basing your wins/losses on a guy coming off an injury and a couple unproven draft picks.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:43 PM
/iconic photo joke
August 29th, 2011 at 12:43 PM
SG, Ingram is not exactly an “iffy” draft pick.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
The highlight of the game was Shaun Rogers turning Kyle Boller into a pancake. Probably a warm, buttery pancake for the big guy.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:45 PM
I get what you’re saying, but such is the NFL. Rarely is a team without holes, and injuries and luck can make or break a season.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:45 PM
Neither was Ricky Williams
/all draft picks are iffy
August 29th, 2011 at 12:46 PM
If you say so. I think he’s going to struggle in the NFL.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:47 PM
He got blown the fuck up on blitz coverage more than once. It was very Joe McKnight-esque
August 29th, 2011 at 12:47 PM
I feel like every time this game is mentioned a link to BEAST MODE must be provided.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:47 PM
I think SG is right in the fact that we are praising Ingram, but at the end of the day, he is still a rookie and this is preseason. My concern if I am a Saints fan is the D. They play in a weak division so that helps, but the true test for them will be against some….checks schedule. This is a weak ass schedule!
August 29th, 2011 at 12:47 PM
Like Haynesworth, the guy was a beast when he wanted to be, but poor attitude and work ethic held him back. I’m curious how he’ll do with a good team.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:48 PM
The highlight of the game was Shaun Rogers turning Kyle Boller into a pancake. Probably a warm, buttery pancake.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:48 PM
Completely agree. I think my main hesitation is that everyone is assuming they’re going to be amazing based solely on the best case scenario for their “ifs.” That’s never a good sign, IMO.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:50 PM
Huh? I’d venture to say they play in the best division in the NFC.
I like Ingram too. They have a great stable of backs so it’s not like they’re asking Ingram to carry the load. Thomas is a solid back, will probably get the goalline touches, and Sproles provides the versatility as a scat-back.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:50 PM
Speaking of last night, how about that Taiwan Jones cat for the Raiders? It’s only preseason, but damn. Looks good.
He definitely looked like McFadden-lite. Similar build, fast as hell, probably won’t see much time with McFadden in but could play the same role with him missing any games.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:51 PM
That was an awesome run. That stadium was going absolutely crazy (wish I had been there) and knowing how loud it gets in there, it must have been insane.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:53 PM
Huh? I’d venture to say they play in the best division in the NFC
NFC North and East are better.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:53 PM
A motivated Shaun Rogers is going to be a scary fucking thing for offenses this year.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:54 PM
Not sure about that. The Giants and Redskins aren’t very special and the next big win Dallas notches will be the first. The North has potential, but the South could have three 10-win teams again. That’s a lot of quality even though CAR is so bad.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:55 PM
49ers in the Superbowl! /greenie
Texans in the playoffs /everyone
More often than not, its usually 180 for a lot of teams. Superbowl picks in late August don’t hold a lot of weight, IMO
August 29th, 2011 at 12:55 PM
“Yeah, no chance RB’s drafted in the late first round can ever suck.”
- Trung Candiadate
August 29th, 2011 at 12:55 PM
Even I think this is a joke. NFC South has three legit 10+ win teams. With the way the Eagles O-line looks, they’ll barely win 8 games right now. Dallas’ D has been awful in the preseason. The Bears and Vikings are going to suck and the Lions will maybe win 8 this year?
August 29th, 2011 at 12:56 PM
When has Shaun Rogers ever been motivated? People honestly believe at 32 and 11 years in the league he’s suddenly going to be motivated?
August 29th, 2011 at 12:56 PM
I agree the guy is a beast. But, he has been diagnosed with some form of arthritis if I remember correctly, right?
August 29th, 2011 at 12:57 PM
The Bucs smell of regression team to me, won more games than expected against a soft schedule but rarely looked good doing it…they could be a better football team this year and still finish 7-9
August 29th, 2011 at 12:58 PM
I’m not under any delusions of grandeur here but I’d appreciate not being lumped in with the likes of the Vikings. Going to be a long year in the Metrodome.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:59 PM
One superbowl does not change the fact that they are the Aints. Something will go wrong, its always does.
Fuck you in the ear.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:00 PM
There was a 6 game stretch one year with the Lions when he was pretty much unstoppable. IIRC, he even returned a fumble for a TD. Oh and Philly, if Stafford stays healthy, the Lions could win 10. Hell, I was looking at the schedule yesterday and they could win 12 if everything goes swimmingly.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:01 PM
Lisk – I know we don’t agree on Chris Johnson but give me your opinion on Lance Briggs asking the Bears to tear up his paper with 3 years left on his deal. That’s just asinine, right? He was a UFA in 2008. He could have sought big money and chose to stay here after the Niners were guilty of tampering.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:01 PM
Even I think this is a joke. NFC South has three legit 10+ win teams. With the way the Eagles O-line looks, they’ll barely win 8 games right now.
I hope your right about the Eagles, but I just don’t see the South doing much aside from the Saints. Tampa is still really young and they could take a step back. ATL has a really tough schedule and so I don’t know how they will do. I could be wrong on this (I am wrong a lot) but I just don’t like anyone outside the Saints in this division
August 29th, 2011 at 1:01 PM
One superbowl does not change the fact that they are the Aints. Something will go wrong, its always does.
So there’s at least one other person here who understands the historical heartbreak of rooting for the Saints.
The 2009 season was a fluke; everything aligned, the offense clicked on all cylinders, the defense bowed but did not break. The current team reminds me more of the 1979 Saints: plenty of offensive tools and a defense that can’t seem to stop anyone. The Seattle abomination last season exposed them, I think, and opponents will game-plan based on the fact that New Orleans CANNOT stop the run.
Plus Payton still gets too cutesy in his play-calling. Hey, Sean, Bush is gone! Drop the playground reverses and flea-flickers already.
That said, I will still watch this potential train wreck because … well, 44 years and counting. I just can’t quit you, Fleur-de-Lis.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:02 PM
I am not this good at “controlling” expectations.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:02 PM
whoooa, whoooa, whaoooa!!!!
August 29th, 2011 at 1:02 PM
I thought Briggs already held out once
August 29th, 2011 at 1:04 PM
I would be more worried about the little guys they have up front to stop the run, than I would be about their offensive line. They are gonna struggle a bit, because teams are gonna run the fuck out of the ball against the birds.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:05 PM
The Vikes are going to be OK on offense. That defense, on the other hand…
August 29th, 2011 at 1:06 PM
did the players achieve anything during the lockout?
-still playing 4 preseason games
-still no arbitration (see: johnson, chris)
-now there’s HGH testing; they got nothing in return
-arbitrary suspensions
the players, like middle class Americans, are too dumb to steal any power from the rich.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:06 PM
Going to be a long year in the Metrodome.
I think they go 8-8. Just enough to lose out on a top 10 pick and not even come close to sniffing the playoffs. This is why the Vikings are always THIS close to putting together a good team.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:07 PM
Yeah Stafford if healthy is a game changer. I agree on the Lions being a 10-11 win team if Stafford can play the whole season.
Yeah, the more I hear about all of the issues the O-line is having, the more scared I get we’re going to see a prolonged Vince Young starting.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:07 PM
He did. Now he’s doing it again with 3 years left. He knows he’s the most valuable piece on the defense currently and is being a dick about it.
I hope they tell him to go to hell.
On a scale of 1-10, 1 being pants shitting frightened then lighting yourself on fire with a blowtorch and 10 being WE’RE GOING TO THE SUPER BOWL, exactly how comfortable are you with McNabb?
August 29th, 2011 at 1:08 PM
Don’t forget they also fed current and future rookies to the wolves.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:09 PM
Even I think this is a joke. NFC South has three legit 10+ win teams. With the way the Eagles O-line looks, they’ll barely win 8 games right now. Dallas’ D has been awful in the preseason. The Bears and Vikings are going to suck and the Lions will maybe win 8 this year?
Define legit. TB, ATL and NO got to play NFC West and the worst team in league twice, and went 17-1 against those games. They don’t have 34 combined wins against an average schedule.
NFC North played AFC East and NFC East, and all of those teams were better than anyone from the NFC West and Carolina. Schedule makes a big difference.
The North was better last year, but played a much, much, tougher schedule.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:09 PM
How much does he have left in the tank? I’m guessing Tulloch is only here for one year.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:09 PM
The closest to a guaranteed 10 win season in the NFC South are the Saints.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:10 PM
On a scale of 1-10, 1 being pants shitting frightened then lighting yourself on fire with a blowtorch and 10 being WE’RE GOING TO THE SUPER BOWL, exactly how comfortable are you with McNabb?
5- If AP can be successful in the early part of the game, that D will be forced to put 8 men in the box and Mcnabb should have success. If not, I don’t think they do very well. It’s a game by game situation.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:11 PM
When his current contract expires, he will be 33 years old. He’s doing exactly what Urlacher did in 2009. Going for one last big pay day.
For the Bears sake, I hope they don’t give in this time.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:11 PM
Don’t forget they also fed current and future rookies to the wolves.
yep, and those who make it to their 2nd NFL contract will undoubtedly do the same during the next CBA.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:13 PM
They weren’t the ones who opted out crying poor, keeping things as close to the status quo as possible was in their best interest…plus I might be wrong but with the new revenue splits they stand to benefit more from the next TV deal than they previously would have
August 29th, 2011 at 1:14 PM
I would have ranked division strength last year as:
1) AFC East
2) AFC North
3) NFC North
4) NFC South
5) NFC East
6) AFC South
7) AFC West
8) SEC
9) NFC West
It just so happens that the other tough divisions played much tougher schedules.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:15 PM
Call me crazy, but I still like the Cowboys as a sleeper to get to the NFC title game this year. I’m certainly not panicking with the Eagles, but I don’t like what I’ve seen so far. Add Vick’s health concerns to that and Mantis’ 8 win projection doesn’t seem all that nuts.
I agree with Butters that the Bucs are a regression candidate. I still don’t like Atlanta in the playoffs, even though I think they’ll make them.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:16 PM
Bears cut another bust in Vernon Gholston. They’ve already cut Chester Taylor so let’s see if they can complete the trio and get rid of Roy Williams.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:16 PM
I hope the Wings never wearing these gross uniforms.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:18 PM
keeping things as close to the status quo as possible was in their best interest…
why? because their previous CBA and current are the worst in sports. i’ll bet my left arm the owners never bought for one second that the players would hold out into the regular season. then again, that’s why the owners (most, anyway) are smart, successful businessmen and the players are, well…
August 29th, 2011 at 1:18 PM
Wow, I’d eight-two be an arsenal fan right now.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:18 PM
8) SEC
that’s my favorite too!
August 29th, 2011 at 1:19 PM
They have the same ones for the Hawks, too. Just hideous. Looks like you should be smearing Vapo-rub underneath your eyes/nose and carrying glow sticks if you wear that thing.
I think Roy is going to make the team. Making it through the whole season is another story. Still think our best receiver is Earl Bennett in terms of complete package. He’s not a burner, but he runs good routes and can catch the ball. Knox and Hester can’t say the last two things and Williams is nothing but trouble.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:20 PM
You realize that Bob Kraft wasn’t negotiating with Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Cromartie, right?
August 29th, 2011 at 1:22 PM
I’m with PKI, 5. He’s not what he was for a QB, but the offense corrdination is going to be better this year (maybe it will be a kick-ass offense?). If Berrian continues to actually play and AP is AP, I think they’re going to be fine.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:22 PM
ah yes, the annual nonsense of predicting NFL records and schedule strength in August. a process equally as stupid, yet enjoyable, as the 1st coaches/AP poll in CFB.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:25 PM
ah yes, the annual nonsense of predicting NFL records and schedule strength in August. a process equally as stupid, yet enjoyable, as the 1st coaches/AP poll in CFB.
It’s still fun and passes the time. The trick is to admit that you don’t know what the hell your talking about so nobody can call you out on by week 4
August 29th, 2011 at 1:25 PM
Got any conversation starters, then? I’m in the middle of reading our brand new 238 page safety manual here and I’d appreciate some distractions.

why do dogs like to stick their head out the window of moving cars, yet they are irritated when you blow in their face?
August 29th, 2011 at 1:30 PM
Please baby Jesus make this happen. What a fucking sack of shit. I hate Jerry Angelo for even signing him in the first place. Moron.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:31 PM
because you have halitosis?
August 29th, 2011 at 1:32 PM
Berrian is going to have a great year. Until he pulls a hammy again. But still, he’ll be a threat when he’s in there.
And thank GOD they finally have an o-coordinator that knows what he’s doing. The run blocking on Saturday was better than it was all of last season.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:35 PM
why do dogs like to stick their head out the window of moving cars, yet they are irritated when you blow in their face?
my infant gets irritated when I blow in his face. It’s a pretty funny reaction.
/hmmm, wonders if he would like sticking head out window.

please be sure to provide him with just enough room to stick his head out. i think the quality of your posts would take a hit from prison.

And here I was hoping that we could slip past everyone unannounced. Dammit! Go back and marvel some more at Philly’s Dream Team! They’re like the Heat!!
I got big hopes for this season. And while everyone focuses on adding Ingram, I think the buffer get was Cam Jordan. We need someone who can put pressure on the QB. I think he and Smith will benefit from the stronger d-line.
As for the division, I think the Falcons are morelikely to suffer a dip back and watch the Bucs take their spot. All the same, NFC South will be tougher than East or North, where you can pencil in Green Bay & Philly in as winners.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:53 PM
more time for research, though…
August 29th, 2011 at 2:06 PM
neither one of these are foregone conclusions.
August 30th, 2011 at 12:47 PM
Saints are my sleeper pick in the NFC and I talk to my friend Goodell all the time and he agrees.
