The Dodgers are ‘Evaluating’ Legendary Announcer Vin Scully
According to TJ Simers of the LA Times, the Dodgers have asked season ticket holders for their thoughts on the greatest announcer in MLB history:
On a scale of 1 to 5, “They wanted my opinion of Vin Scully in the following eight areas: 1. Knowledge of baseball; 2. Knowledge of Dodgers organization; 3. Objectivity; 4. Accuracy of calls; 5. Storytelling ability; 6. Focus on the game; 7. Style; 8. Overall performance.
Ordinarily, I’d applaud a team for pretending to care what fans think. It’s too bad the Yankees don’t do this sort of thing (or do they? I’m not a season ticket holder). But Vin Scully? He’s above reproach.
Dodgers fans – or rather, what’s left of the Dodger fanbase – you have the floor. [LA Times]

August 25th, 2011 at 4:29 PM
I think he’s earned a retirement on his terms.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:30 PM
Are they also considering changing their colors to pink and white? Because that makes about as much sense.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:32 PM
Hope they don’t poll the idiots who voted in the Culture Tournament who would give Gus Johnson a higher ranking

Hope they don’t poll the idiots who voted in the Culture Tournament who would give Gus Johnson a higher ranking
Tragic. Gus over Marv invalidates that whole exercise.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:38 PM
Let’s stop the “quiz” right here and acknowledge that no one in entire the Dodger organization would get higher than a 2 on this one.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:38 PM
Was the last question in the poll “can I interest you in Dodger bonds?”
August 25th, 2011 at 4:40 PM
Worst GM in baseball: Go.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:41 PM
Permission to voice my displeasure on how dumb this was? Because I definitely let out an audible “what the fuck” when I saw that Marv lost.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:42 PM
Fuck the Dodgers as a team, an organization, and a mother fuckin’ crew….
August 25th, 2011 at 4:43 PM
I can’t tell you how delighted I am that this is a thing. Haven’t gotten a chance to use this in months.

Liriano to the DL with a shoulder strain. The hits to my fantasy pitching staff just keep on coming.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:45 PM
Colletti has to be up there. Let’s trade away Carlos Santana for the corpse of Casey Blake.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:46 PM
Since Hendry got canned, Ed Wade.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:47 PM
Why would you ask a SEASON TICKET HOLDER what they think of the TV announcer? They’re supposed to be at the fucking games, not watching them on TV!
August 25th, 2011 at 4:47 PM
Scully should tell them to suck his balls and then do guest appearances at Padres, Angels and Giants games.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:47 PM
Probably not THE worst, but he’s plenty fucking awful.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:48 PM
This is probably the right answer.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:48 PM
The more him and Joe Nathan attempt to pitch baseballs the less of a heist that Pierzynski deal becomes in the annals of MLB trade history

MS, I’d have to go with Easy Eddie Wade.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:49 PM
Ok, so worst GMs have to include Colletti, Wade (obviously), Sabean and probably Bill Smith.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:50 PM
Since Hendry got canned, Ed Wade.
It’s like I was saying in Hernia’s late post yesterday, I’m no fan of Ed Wade, I think he’s a little bit of a puppet and that’s why McLane hired him in the first place, but he’s made some decent trades to set us up for the future. The interim is going to be plenty ugly though.
Having said that, I won’t shed a tear if he is let go by Crane.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:50 PM
Why Bill Smith?
August 25th, 2011 at 4:51 PM
Robinson Cano, dontcha know? SLAM.
Got a barn burner in the Bronx right now!
August 25th, 2011 at 4:51 PM
YES! Definitely THE worst, but he’s Top 5. And don’t give me this “he brought in the players that won the WS” bullshit either, there are MANY more failed signings and trades than positive ones over the years.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:51 PM
Can’t believe the Yankees are still in this game.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:51 PM
Ok, so worst GMs have to include Colletti, Wade (obviously), Sabean and probably Bill Smith.
I can’t believe Sabean still has a job at times. The Giants won last year in spite of his moves, not because of them.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:51 PM
Ha. Something like that.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:52 PM
I would greatly appreciate another Bailey save today.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:52 PM
Had to put someone else in there. A lot of GMs have only been on the top for two years or less. I wouldn’t really rate them unless they’ve been on the job for 3+ years.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:52 PM
That’s my thinking with the Tigers and Dombrowski.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:53 PM
Nice gravatar, Watsonian.

Comment 23 should have had a (h/t Hernia) inserted after the “having said that”.

Chris Antonetti.
He just fucked over his teams future if Ubaldo is damaged goods.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:54 PM
More fantasy points for me please.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:54 PM
Mozellak from the Cardinals. Has not made a single move to improve the team, caved to TLR regarding Rasmus (which may have been warranted, since reports are that Rasmus had no support from teammates either, but still), and instead of signing a quality player, we roll the dice with stopgaps and hope it works.
damn it, we are losing Pujols

August 25th, 2011 at 4:55 PM
They may like the team and watch the other 81 games a year on TV.

Ha. Those two minds conversing will always be fascinating.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:55 PM

August 25th, 2011 at 4:56 PM
Does Scully call the entire game anymore? Just curious
August 25th, 2011 at 4:57 PM
Agreed.
Good idea, Dodger Organization. Take the broadcasting (and public) face of your franchise….which happens to be the only facet of your franchise worth a damn right now…..and “evaluate it”.
The Phillies organization gave hints of this sort of thing with Harry Kalas before he died, but they (luckily for the organization) backed away from it. The fan backlash would have been swift, negative, and unyielding if the organization was seen to have forced Harry out. I would imagine Dodger fans feel the same way about Vin Scully.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:57 PM
Maybe they’re thinking of making Scully the GM. He’d probably do a better job than Coletti.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:58 PM
I thought Vin only does home games and the occasional road trip.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:59 PM
As a fellow Fordham alum, I would be pissed off if the Dodgers pulled this off. Fuck the McCourts and their scumbag ponzi scheme for the Dodgers.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:59 PM
It’s baffling that executives within organizations are unable to see things like this from a mile away.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:00 PM
I think he just calls 5 innings of home games, and skips most (all?) away games. Luckily he hasn’t had to worry about traveling for the playoffs for a while. I miss MLB having radio app because the first two innings (when he has all his material) of every game is a gem.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:00 PM
Vin does most of the games. Usually it’s just Sunday that he takes off.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:01 PM
Not sure if anyone knows/remembers BUT Colletti was the Assistant GM to Sabean and he left* the Giants to take the Dodgers’ GM role.
*Did we plant him there to sabotage the Dodgers? I’d love to think so!
August 25th, 2011 at 5:02 PM
I don’t know what Scully gets paid, but i imagine it’s a lot. If the cheap Dodgers try to say, ‘hey, fans aren’t feeling him anymore’ and dump Scully … the backlash would be brutal.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:02 PM
It’s baffling that executives within organizations are unable to see things like this from a mile away.
To be fair, the Dodgers execs mostly watch Red Sox games when they want to watch baseball
August 25th, 2011 at 5:02 PM
How is Charley Steiner, anyway? I’ve listened to him twice, and once I thought he sucked and once I thought he’d be a good (eventual) fill-in for Scully.
Anyone who thinks Scully should be forced out is probably commenting here as a break from kicking their grandfather in the face.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:03 PM
Then I would like to retract my comment.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:03 PM
and dump Scully … the backlash would be brutal.
Yep. Their attendance would fall even further from it’s current 32 year (IIRC) low
August 25th, 2011 at 5:03 PM
Yes, Scully still calls the entire game. There are times when you can tell that he’s like fuck this team. Biggest culprit of Dodger quagmire of shit is McCourt. Not trading Kemp or Kershaw temporarily prevented his immediate liquidation.
/McCourt still needs to be liquided
August 25th, 2011 at 5:04 PM
Not sure if anyone knows/remembers BUT Colletti was the Assistant GM to Sabean and he left* the Giants to take the Dodgers’ GM role.

If so, he’s doing a bang up job.
Speaking of Colletti, this seems like a good team to dig into the FJM archives and pull something out.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:04 PM
I think all sports fans agree on this. There has to be no owner who is as universally despised by everyone as Mr. Leverage McCourt.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:05 PM
Always worth mentioning when McCourt has another terrible idea: he wanted to tear down Fenway Park when he was trying to buy the Sawx
August 25th, 2011 at 5:05 PM
Is that first-hand knowledge? I thought I heard otherwise, but that’d be nice if he does. Pretty sure he only does the shorter/closer road trips though.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:06 PM
How much longer can the McCourts afford to own the team? They’ve got to be swimming in the red and now that Uncle Bud controls the purse strings, it can’t be very pleasant over there.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:09 PM
He’s retiring at the end of the year.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:09 PM
M/b Duckworth, but holy crap… Jordan Jefferson had 49 pairs of athletic shoes seized by police? I would have expected a college QB to have 5 pairs, and 44 tattoos.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:12 PM
How much longer can the McCourts afford to own the team?
Still tied up in bankruptcy AND divorce proceedings so who knows. It really could end up like Curb where the wife gets the team overnight
August 25th, 2011 at 5:13 PM
Yes. However, he takes more days off. I think it will be ok if he decides to retire. I don’t want him to go out like Chick Hearn and pass away while still working for the Lakers. Perhaps, Scully wants to spend time with his family or have other interests.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:13 PM

He might have reflux issues, Nathan Drake. Try giving the dog some wheat bread with his dinner

Late to the party, but you had Garcia that’s sucked for over a month and Liriano? And those are hits to your team? How bad looking is your pitching staff?
August 25th, 2011 at 5:36 PM
Late to the party, but you had Garcia that’s sucked for over a month and Liriano? And those are hits to your team? How bad looking is your pitching staff?
Liriano has been pretty decent this summer. I nearly dumped him shortly after he returned from the DL in the early part of the season, but I decided to stick with him and it’s paid dividends.
My pitching staff is actually pretty good. I have Hamels, Greinke, Carpenter, Ian Kennedy, James Shields, Alexi Ogando, and Jordan Zimmerman among others. I’m first in the league in wins and strikeouts (by nearly 300 in the case of strikeouts). In second place overall in a 10 team league.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:39 PM
Wow, I have 3 of those guys. I’ve got Hamels, Shields and Ogando paired up with Kershaw, Kuroda, Morton, Tomlin and Worley
August 25th, 2011 at 5:42 PM
I also have had some pretty shitty guys too: I finally cut Ted Lilly loose in June or early July (can’t remember exactly when). In addition to dropping Garcia yesterday, I also dropped Kyle McLellan. I took a flyer on Jordan Lyles and that proved to be a less than smart idea. Bud Norris gives me good strikeout numbers, but he’s had several wins turned into NDs by the Astros bullpen. I just picked up Matt Harrison, so naturally he shit the bed yesterday after having a pretty good month.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:42 PM
Zimmermann’s about to hurt you, too, since he’s getting shut down after his next start
August 25th, 2011 at 5:44 PM
I know stark. Hamels is on the DL through Sunday and Liriano just got added, and so I’m struggling to scrape together a staff for the last month of the season after coasting for most of the year.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:46 PM
I’m in the same boat except for the part where my pitchers were good in the first place. Zimmermann has been my savior this season. I’m gonna have nothing to count on in my league playoffs
August 25th, 2011 at 5:50 PM
I guess if you’re looking for K’s, he’s been alright, but going from watching his every start and not worrying about fantasy #’s, he’s looked like crap in over half of his starts. I can only think of his one start against Texas where he actually looked really good (and he happened to have better stuff then compared to his no-no).
A lot of hits, a lot of walks, and a high ERA.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:51 PM
Most of my really good pitchers were autodrafted, so I can’t take too much credit for them. But on the offensive side, I picked up Alex Avila, Alex Gonzales, Melky Cabrera, Todd Helton, Jonathan Lucroy and Cameron Maybin in free agency. I feel pretty smart after those pick ups.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:52 PM
I guess if you’re looking for K’s, he’s been alright, but going from watching his every start and not worrying about fantasy #’s, he’s looked like crap in over half of his starts.
Our league values Ks, wins, and ERA, and to a lesser extent WHIP. My ERA is kind high for the league, but my WHIP is in the top 3 or 4. So Liriano has been a good value for me, especially considering I was going to dump him just a couple of months ago.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:52 PM
Same here. With Baker and Sanchez down.
