Fantasy Football 2011: Running Back Rankings
Back in May, I did a preliminary set of fantasy projections and rankings for running backs (part I and part II). That was during the lockout, though, and before the crazy free agency period, injuries, and more information came in. I’ve now tweaked my projections and adjusted the rankings to reflect my current thoughts.
A few notes before we get to the list. I was high on Ryan Mathews as a breakout candidate. Then he showed up to camp out of shape, and has worked his way back in the preseason. I’ve lowered him on the list, but I still have him higher than most. Most experts I read have him listed as an overrated candidate, and so I am in the minority. If I’m wrong on him, though, it’s because I will be wrong on my Chargers’ offense projection, because I have San Diego as a top 6 rushing production team in 2011 with a great passing offense in Rivers, a full year of Vincent Jackson, and better special teams that will have this team playing with the lead more. I’ve lowered Mathews’ expected usage down, and as a result Mike Tolbert also jumps in the top 24. Yes, I have both almost as high as where many are saying Mathews is overrated (current ADP in the RB18-20 range). Those two are the clear 1-2 punch, so this isn’t a New England situation where the production is split 3-4 ways. The only way Mathews is overrated, in my opinion, is if Tolbert gets more than 50% of the work even when Mathews is healthy, in which case he should be in people’s top 15.
I did these projections by looking at last year’s running back production, and then adjusting it based on my team projection for overall performance and offensive performance (since rush attempts and totals are tied to winning and playing with the lead), based on specific additions or subtractions to the offense, this year’s schedule, and anticipated change in roles. It’s a lot of guesswork, but at least it’s educated guess work.
After I had the team projections, I went through and divided it by estimating the percentage of carries to each back (assuming 1-2 games missed for each starter, so it slightly underestimates their totals if they play all 16), the distribution of receiving opportunities on the team, and the touchdown split depending on whether the lead back was likely to get goal line opportunities or split them with backups. I then calculated the projected points based on 1 point for every 10 yards from scrimmage, and 6 points per TD. This is not PPR, but I list my projected totals so you can add those for PPR and re-adjust. I also list projected totals so you can see where tiers are. For example, Peterson and Foster are their own tier. Only 12 points separate my 9th (Mendenhall) and 18th (Forte) ranked players. That way, if you disagree on a particular player, or want a different player ranked slightly lower in the same range, you can mentally make that adjustment.

NICE! Thanks Lisk!!
/goes back to read the rankings

Imagine if AP was white?
August 25th, 2011 at 3:47 PM
i gotta feeling reggie bush is gonna have a beast year.
August 25th, 2011 at 3:49 PM
I cannot believe I did not realize the “A Time To Kill” McConnehey speech at the end when he gives the final arguments and then says “Imagine she was white” and it completely blows away everyone in the courtroom and a man who clearly killed 2 people (albeit terrible, racist people) gets off for murder charges. That is on my “Must watch atleast a segment when it’s on TV” list.

He wouldn’t fumble.

August 25th, 2011 at 3:50 PM
I feel like Beanie is too low and maybe it was just the run agaisnt the Saints but I love Beast Mode this year.
August 25th, 2011 at 3:52 PM
I will be taking this list to my draft, thank you
August 25th, 2011 at 3:52 PM
Ryan Grant at 28 might be a tad high, been reading stuff lately he’s even a question to make the team. They seem much higher on Starks going into the year.
August 25th, 2011 at 3:52 PM
Felix is too low. This is the year dammit!
August 25th, 2011 at 3:53 PM
PS will you be doing the RB and QB before sunday?
August 25th, 2011 at 3:55 PM
White Vick is too low
August 25th, 2011 at 3:56 PM
I think Starks will be the guy in GB and Ridley will be the guy in NE. But knowing Belichick he’ll have 6 different guys running the ball including Kevin Faulk’s corpse so there’s no point in drafting a Pats RB.
I also think it’s astounding how few stars there are at the RB position these days. Really it’s Peterson and CJ and that’s it.
August 25th, 2011 at 3:57 PM
Lisk, this is bad ass stuff.
August 25th, 2011 at 3:57 PM
I’m disapointed there isnt a pic of Peyton Hillis in blackface
August 25th, 2011 at 3:59 PM
I feel like Beanie is too low and maybe it was just the run agaisnt the Saints but I love Beast Mode this year.
If you think the Cardinals will be a vastly improved running team then bump him up. I’m not a fan of Mr. Wells, but he jumped up substantially when Williams got hurt.
August 25th, 2011 at 3:59 PM
For a second, the spankees scared me then I always remember that Burnett and Hughes follow CC in the rotation.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:00 PM
Awesome list Lisk. Definitely gonna print this up and use it this weekend.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:00 PM
Lisk, do your rankings take into account that Jackson has been named the starter in Buffalo?
August 25th, 2011 at 4:03 PM
Gore is too high.
Forte is too low.
Swap’em.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:05 PM
This is pretty sweet.
/game of thrones related
August 25th, 2011 at 4:05 PM
Lisk, do your rankings take into account that Jackson has been named the starter in Buffalo?
They take into account that it is basically a 50/50 split, where both have been mentioned as starters (Spiller got majority in first quarter last game), and their ages, Spiller’s draft status and second year in league. My split was slightly in favor of spiller in rush, favor of spiller receiving, and Jackson in TD’s.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:05 PM
Lisk- If it’s PPR, what kind of bump are you giving Addai? Couple spots? Maybe into the top 25? Trying to figure out if I have 3 backs in your top 25.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:06 PM
Did you account for the fact that Spiller sucks?
August 25th, 2011 at 4:07 PM
That seems sensible to me.
I lol’d.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:07 PM
Lisk – Do you think CHarles will get even more carries since Jones is getting older and slower?
August 25th, 2011 at 4:07 PM
Oh and I would move Shonn Greene up a little higher. Think he’s gonna be beast mode this year.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:07 PM
Same question for Pierre Thomas, too. He’s likely to get the catches along with Sproles, right? Ingram is just out there to run and pass block is my assumption.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:07 PM
Needs more Kendall Hunter. You should know that, Lisk.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:09 PM
I really don’t think there is anyone that considers him worthy of the equal time he’ll get. I guess you gotta try and get that ROI, I hope for the Bills sake he improves.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:09 PM
Gore is too high.
Forte is too low.
Swap’em.
Well, they are separated by a grand total of 8 fantasy points in my projections. Forte is a bad goal line back, and with MB III, I’m projecting him to get less than half the TD’s, but most of the yards. If he was better at goal line, he would be top 10.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:09 PM
I’m sure this has already been covered today, but why no Culture Tourny?

August 25th, 2011 at 4:10 PM
Have you ever watched football?
August 25th, 2011 at 4:10 PM
I still don’t get the love for Shady McCoy, either.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:11 PM
I don’t have faith in Green. It worries me that LT looks kind of…terrible.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:11 PM
I like Hunter, but teams are going to load up on the run and wait for Alex Smith to three-hop crossing patterns.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:11 PM
Not quite a valid question there, Ballz. What the Niners have been doing for the better part of the last decade can’t exactly be categorized as “football.”
August 25th, 2011 at 4:12 PM
Also does Rice’ value go down since they brought in williams? Will there be a McGahee-esque situation where they have Rice eat up the yards in the middle o the field then hand it to another guy for the TD?
August 25th, 2011 at 4:12 PM
Did you account for the fact that Spiller sucks?
No.
Well, I account for the fact that lots of 2nd year running backs are rumored to suck or just don’t get it, some of which do continue to suck, and some of which turn into Mendenhall or McFadden or insert other name as that season progresses.
Obviously, he may continue to suck. The fact that he did well on kickoff returns and was drafted highly portends that he will do a little more than last year.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:12 PM
Eagles screen game = PPR monster
August 25th, 2011 at 4:14 PM
Well, how do you like our fired former offensive coordinator?
August 25th, 2011 at 4:14 PM
He cries too much. Especially after sex with Jay.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:14 PM
I knokw, he only averaged 5.2 ypc last season and caught 72 passes, right?
August 25th, 2011 at 4:15 PM
Wasn’t it Lisk who said he liked Hunter when the Niners drafted him? I remember something like that.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:15 PM
If you already did these please link? I feel so lazy this year.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:15 PM
Oh and I would move Shonn Greene up a little higher. Think he’s gonna be beast mode this year.
I’ve got him projected as one of the highest rushing totals, but complete lack of receiving yards saps value. He’ll have to be beast mode (1,500 yards or more rushing) to justify paying near the top 10, because he does nothing as a receiver. And he’s not young.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:15 PM
When it comes to Ryan Mathews’ fantasy value, I’m “Lisk Averse.”
I couldn’t help myself.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:15 PM
What’s not to love, besides that offensive line?
August 25th, 2011 at 4:17 PM
I see your point Lisk.
By the by, I’m planning picking up Jets-Eagles tix soon for the regular season. Week before Christmas, but a Philly TBL meet up would be cool if people would be down for it.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:17 PM
Yet Gore remains a fantasy stud even with Smith at QB. So yes, it’s a valid question. He missed 5 games last year bc of injury but is healthy now.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:17 PM
Out of the four New England backs, Vereen might have the best home run ability. He’s back from injury, and I think he’ll jump Ridley soon. Of course, I don’t play fantasy, so I have no idea how valuable a 3rd back is, even on a good offense, but I’d guess he’ll end up with 4 games with lots of touches, 4 games with none, and 8 in the middle.
/probably why he’s not on the top 60 list
August 25th, 2011 at 4:17 PM
Wasn’t it Lisk who said he liked Hunter when the Niners drafted him? I remember something like that.
I do. I think he’ll be a starter in this league. Not this year unless Gore is hurt, which is not out of the question. I had him ahead of Dixon, though.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:18 PM
/stats to stomp like a five year old
Lisk – can you please answer my questions about Ric and Charles?
August 25th, 2011 at 4:19 PM
Already got plans to be down for this. And it would be more like a Philly TBL “Who’s paying the bail?”-up.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:19 PM
Injury risk. Regression candidate.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:20 PM
Year older. Didn’t re-sign their center. Two rebuilt knees. No thanks.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:20 PM
Love him as a player, but he’s getting awfully close to that RB expiration date, right?
August 25th, 2011 at 4:20 PM
Awesome. You have to follow me on twitter so we can talk about it more (I’m awaiting on you).
Considering my buddy and I drink a handle of Jack usually before Eagles games, be warned.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:21 PM
You should know better, Lisk.
And, as meaningless as it may be, he shredded the Raiders last week.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:21 PM
Gore is too high.
Forte is too low.
Swap’em.
Have you ever watched football?
Are you biased at all?
August 25th, 2011 at 4:21 PM
Why can’t Cincy be relevant so there can be a TBL meet up somewhere in this area? or Columbus?
August 25th, 2011 at 4:23 PM
You’d probably have to work anyways.
/twists knife
//you’ve had TWO chances
August 25th, 2011 at 4:23 PM
Also would think that given the CJ injury risk, and maybe some limits to his workload, I’d like Ringer better than most of the guys on the bottom of that list. He could be a 1,000 yard back, if CJ went down, and a lot of guys ahead of him prob can’t say that.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:23 PM
/stats to stomp like a five year old
Lisk – can you please answer my questions about Ric and Charles?
Sorry, missed it. One word- Yes.
More than one word– Chiefs won’t be winning as many, not as easy a schedule, and Charles is far safer to keep the same touches. He can play from ahead, behind, etc. He’s the explosive receiver that will be in if the team is trailing. I expect there to be some more shift toward Charles, closer to 250 attempts, an overall decrease in attempts, at the hand of Jones (McClain also a threat to Jones more than Charles if Jones slows down early).
August 25th, 2011 at 4:23 PM
Yes, but not this year. He’s over 1,000 yards, 6+ TD’s and good receiving yards. He has a lot of benefits in the receiving game that not all backs have. Especially with Alex playing QB. He’s constantly one of the top receivers on the team, you can’t look at only rushing yards with him.

August 25th, 2011 at 4:27 PM
GP – Forgot to tell you: Denver is now one of my favorite cities in the US. Could not have had a better time there. Love the setup, too. Got lost in the spanish part of town though.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:27 PM
Also would think that given the CJ injury risk, and maybe some limits to his workload, I’d like Ringer better than most of the guys on the bottom of that list. He could be a 1,000 yard back, if CJ went down, and a lot of guys ahead of him prob can’t say that.
I don’t disagree with this thinking. My rank order is projected points on average, but I would much rather take a Ringer late than a MBIII, who may be a bye week fill in but doesn’t have the upside if Forte was hurt, that Ringer would have. I am definitely an upside play late, because you can find those veterans on the waiver wire any time.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:28 PM
He’s doing it to everybody apparently. Started yesterday, apparently it’s some kind of malware.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:28 PM
Sorry SC, I didn’t see it.

/points Lisk in the direction of my Addai question
#22 and #27, por favor.
I don’t think it would move him that much. I’m not sure he’s the receiving threat he once was. It would only move him around guys who are non-factors as receivers, closer to a Wells or Lynch, and more distance from Benson and Green Ellis.

August 25th, 2011 at 4:32 PM
Lisk – did you get my tweet the other night about who I should target at in my 6th pick in a PPR & Non-PPR leagues? I’m thinking Andre in the PPR league and then maybe going after Rodgers in the non-PPR league.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:37 PM
Oh, and I should have added Ray Rice to my 2nd year running back list. I remember debating him with all the people that said he sucked and would not surpass LeRon McClain, who would be the goal line back. (h/t: MikeNYC)
August 25th, 2011 at 4:39 PM
Lisk (and anyone else willing to chime in for that matter) – I have 3rd pick in a 12 team keeper league and kept Andre Johnson. Non PPR and key stat is QB TD’s are 6 instead of 4.
Top available… Vick, Schaub, Rice, Mendenhall, McCoy, CJ, Roddy White, Megatron, Fitz
The two keepers ahead of me were Peyton and Gore, so Gore guy might draft Vick.
My plan was to grab Schaub because of the combo and 6 point TD, but any thoughts on going another route? Top RB or WR?
August 25th, 2011 at 4:40 PM
Thanks.
You may have answered this already, but will you be doing previews for QB’s and WR’s?
August 25th, 2011 at 4:41 PM
My plan was to grab Schaub because of the combo and 6 point TD, but any thoughts on going another route? Top RB or WR?
No way in hell I would take Schaub anywhere near that high. It’s still about points over baseline. If he’s getting 6 a TD, everyone else is too. He’s not that much of an upgrade over the next 6-8 QB’s.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:42 PM
Why should we trust Ray Rice again? He was terrible last year, and they added Williams. What am I missing?
August 25th, 2011 at 4:42 PM
The Peyton guy prob needs a QB, too
/sticks middle finger up at Indianapolis as a city, a team, and a motherfucking crew
August 25th, 2011 at 4:42 PM
You may have answered this already, but will you be doing previews for QB’s and WR’s?
Yes, and TE. I’ll do one for tomorrow, one for Saturday AM.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:42 PM
Awesome stuff as usual here, Lisk.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:44 PM
And this is why I posed teh question! Gracias!
So more value in going with a stud WR or RB. As a Steeler fan I’m obviously partial to Mendenhall, but I guess Rice would be good if he’s not swooped up.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:45 PM
Wait, what? 1200 yards rushing, 550 yards receiving is terrible? Yes he only had 5 TD’s, but that’s because McGahee was getting those touches. And they just brought in an actual blocking FB this year.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:46 PM
I laughed, nice. And I’m probably filling up the comments too.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:08 PM
I’m glad you and I have similar theories on projecting the coming year’s production.
No love for a sleeper like Jacquizz Rodgers?
August 25th, 2011 at 9:57 PM
Could be a breakout year for Donald Brown.
