We Get It – the NFL Media Universally Hates Tim Tebow. Remember When the College Football Media Loved Him?

The college football media loved Tim Tebow. He was a terrific example of a student-athlete, unstoppable on the football field, does really kind things off the field, and he never got in trouble. He was part of two title-winning teams at Florida, won a Heisman, and is recognized as one of the best college football players ever. (I still maintain Tommy Frazier was better, but whatever.) The media gushed about Tebow. At times, it was embarrassing.
The NFL media? Not fans of Tebow’s work. He doesn’t possess the perfect throwing motion. He thinks run first, pass second. The media’s so anti Tebow, they’ve turned Kyle Orton into the second coming of Johnny Unitas. If I had a daughter, I’d trust her dating Mike Tyson before I trusted Kyle Orton running a two minute drill. Almost daily, you can read a column in the Denver Post about Tim Tebow. Most of it is navel-gazing dreck, but the paper knows it needs to churn out Tebow pieces as often as possible, and when you’ve got nothing to write, you skew negative.
Boomer Esiason: “He can’t play, he can’t throw.”
Randy Cross: “My personal belief is there are people in the media, people in the stands, who are predisposed to see a guy like that fail…Just because he’s so public about the way he feels.” Cross is talking about Tebow’s religion. Can anyone recall the last time a QB’s religion was relevant … TO ANYTHING?
The media hates Tim Tebow and is rooting against him. Fans? I think the media backlash against Tebow actually has fans (even ones outside of Denver and Florida) rooting for him.
Personally? I’m rooting for Tebow. And I can’t wait until Tebow leaps into politics. He has my vote, and I don’t even know where he stands on the issues.

It’s odd how people can’t simply say they don’t think he’ll make a good NFL quarterback for all the logical reasons listed without it somehow being motivated by hate
No shit
August 24th, 2011 at 1:13 PM
Don’t you hate it when media figures use their forum as a bully pulpit and just bang their audience over the head with some pointless shit like this over and over and over, TBL?
August 24th, 2011 at 1:14 PM
Not the biscuits I was hoping to see.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:14 PM
The tea party will welcome him with open arms.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:16 PM
Is the media really rooting against him, or merely that he is the 4th best QB on the team?
August 24th, 2011 at 1:16 PM
sounds just like Vick. and it only took federal imprisonment to make a serious improvement to his game.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:17 PM
Hello Straw Man, whatcha knowin’? I can see your hyperbole flowin’!
But you’re right, only idiots think Kyle Orton is good

August 24th, 2011 at 1:18 PM
Tebow’s politics aren’t really in line with the tea party. He’s a classic religious right conservative. As a Gator I hate to say it, but he’ll be carrying the Santorum mantle.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:18 PM
And thank you for finding that video, TBL. It used to be on YouTube but for some reason it’s gone. I love that video.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:18 PM
We’ll see how important Jason Lisk thinks Tebow is to the Broncos when he does his Denver preview. I bet he doesn’t even mention him.

August 24th, 2011 at 1:20 PM
Takes forever. And I want to hear the story of the time Kyle Orton kicked your dog, thus explaining your hate for him.
Tebow’s biggest problem right now is the same as all the QBs coming from college spread offenses, he cannot read NFL defenses and go throw his progressions. That’s why the media is reporting he is behind Orton and Quinn. It’s not because of his beliefs.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:20 PM

August 24th, 2011 at 1:21 PM
That’s disgusting.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:21 PM
The NFL has so many positive role models, they don’t need Tebow anyway.

And it’s fine to like the guy, seems like a good dude but there have been plenty of charitable and nice guys who weren’t cut out to be NFL quarterbacks…it’s not being cruel to point out his flaws as a player same as what happens to Mark Sanchez here time and again
August 24th, 2011 at 1:22 PM
Anyone not roll their eyes reading that? How’d you do it?

Here’s what I dont get, I saw him play a few times last year and he didnt look bad. I even saw him win. Why is it this year the media has decided he’s the worst NFL qb to ever live? 4th string? Come on now.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:24 PM
TBL would you rather have Tyson date your daughter or Tebow run the 2 minute drill for the Jets?

Outstanding. Also would’ve accepted throwing a ball three feet into the ground in front of the RB as well.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:24 PM
He was drafted with a 1st round draft pick to play the most important position on the field.
He puts his views about his religion and life out for consumption.
I don’t think I’m personally “rooting” for him to fail, but I mostly feel bad because there are no way this kid will ever meet the expectations set out for him. Both on and off the field.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:24 PM
Oh yeah. I firmly support Tebow and like the guy. But [channels Trent Dilfer] he’s just not good enough at the quarterback position to be a quality quarterback in the National Football League when there are other quality quarterbacks like Kyle Orton at the quarterback position.

August 24th, 2011 at 1:25 PM
This isn’t a media issue, his coaches are the ones who evaluate him and drop him down the depth chart…are reporters not supposed to write about it? Seems like any time a 1st round QB doesn’t live up to his draft potential its news

Except that its not. They tried the wildcat, until it didnt work any more. They’ve tried zone-read QB’s, Tebow, VY, Dennis Dixon, Pat White. They dont work because they spent their entire life reading the defensive end, not the secondary.

August 24th, 2011 at 1:34 PM
Did anyone watch much of the 3 games he played last year? From what I remember he looked decent out there. I don’t see how he can go from playing well to being behind Brady Quinn. Hell, trade him to Indy! The major issue may be that he’s lost the locker room. And I don’t think that’s something that can be miraculously healed with loathes an fishes and shit.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:35 PM

August 24th, 2011 at 1:35 PM
See, if college football were truly the minor league system for the NFL, they would not be allowed to run such offenses. Smoke on that one, Francesa.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:36 PM
he’s got enough talent to make something happen, the problem is he doesn’t have the ability yet to always run the plays he is supposed to and make them successful as they were intended.

/Freudian
August 24th, 2011 at 1:37 PM
why spend a lot of time, effort, money and other resources on developing an entirely new system that may or may not work when you can simply pick the guy to run YOUR system via draft, free agency or trade?
when you have an elite pool of talent to pick from, you don’t stick with someone who can’t keep up with it just because he’s a good dude and was good in college.
“status quo?” shut up. it takes more balls to cut tebow than it does to play him and watch him fail.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:38 PM
So is it your assertion here that the Bronco coaches hate him even more than the media and let that cloud their football judgment?
Also something about small sample sizes
August 24th, 2011 at 1:38 PM
It’s pretty simple: It’s not about mechanics or arm strength, it’s about understand the defense he’s facing. The reads are a million times different from his college offense to his pro offense.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:39 PM
Tebow is reportedly, allegedly and STUPPOSEDLY miles behind Brady Quinn.

August 24th, 2011 at 1:39 PM

August 24th, 2011 at 1:39 PM
Why, hello shirtless Tim Tebow! Nice to see you!
August 24th, 2011 at 1:39 PM
This is interesting, but one of the things I see when I watch most college qbs is what’s been mentioned here before – they’re not reading anything but their own sidelines, trying to “read” what play their coach is calling in. That can’t translate well into the pros (plus it drives me crazy).
August 24th, 2011 at 1:40 PM
Tim Tebow is a religious man. I applaud him for that
August 24th, 2011 at 1:41 PM
To be completely fair here, Brady Quinn is not only the better QB, he is also more ripped. Tebow loses again.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:42 PM
Is it really John Fox’s choice though? Isn’t this mostly coming from the top with guys like Elway and Bowlen? Fox may just be sliding him down the chart so far as it’s his own refuge to get a message across.
I may have misconstrued your comment to talk about something different though. But I think what I said is accurate.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:42 PM
that’s not that big of a deal…annoying, yes, but not an NFL killer. bradford was the worst of this, and he was OK as a rookie.
but the reading of the DE in meyer’s and other spread offenses is the killer. four years of reading the DL, not the coverage…that’s bad news.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:42 PM
Anyone remember when TBL was tweeting yesterday about how he was sick of hearing about Tebow and how stupid it was to talk about a back-up QB?
He must have deleted those in anticipation of this post.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:42 PM
I wonder what the “Tebone Me…Just Not in the Endzone” girl thinks about all of this.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:42 PM
This.
If Tebow is cut tomorrow, his career at Denver would be the equivalent of taking his $8.7 million guaranteed dollars that he got when he signed and simply setting it on fire. Most businesses frown upon that sort of practice.

Honestly though, we all joke and say Tebow would be successful as a fullback or a tight end. But isn’t it going to be just as difficult to make the transition from being under center to putting your hand on the ground and trying to block Julius Peppers as it is to revamp his throwing motion?
I mean, he’s either a QB or nothing in the NFL, right? So, he’s nothing but a bonus check the Broncos have to write.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:46 PM

Spencer I am telling you that you wouldn’t be able to at least plug Tebow in as a LB or other Def position. He lacks the instinct to play on the side of the ball.
I still think there is hope for him to be a QB. He just needs time to learn how to read coverage and a tweak to his delivery to speed it up a bit. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just accurate and relatively quick. Look at Phildo Rivers. He looks like he is pushing the ball but its quick and accurate and to the right WR.

What Tebow did in college means nothing to NFL guys.

Well said.

Sounds like an excellent guy to elect to government office. Oh wait.
I’d never vote for a bible thumper like Perry or Bachmann into office.
August 24th, 2011 at 2:06 PM
No but a hot vapid himbo? You betcha.
August 24th, 2011 at 2:07 PM
sounds good. either way, I don’t owe you money…yet.
August 24th, 2011 at 2:08 PM
If you don’t want to vote for the President in 2012, looks like it’s Romney or bust!
August 24th, 2011 at 2:08 PM
You guys need to read the next post. It’s fantastic.
August 24th, 2011 at 2:09 PM
tallguy – also, are you getting that from the reports or did the NCAA already officially release it’s decision on sanctions? I was thinking that wasn’t until 3:00 today.

Tebow’s 2010 stats as a starting QB (against 2 bad defenses and 1 good defense), extrapolated over 16 games:
Passing: 3472Yds 21TD-16INT 8.0YPA Rushing: 1061Yds 16TD 4.9YPC
Not sure why that’s considered such a failure, especially compared to Vick’s rookie stats, which were awful.
August 24th, 2011 at 2:10 PM
That’s pretty horrifying, young Jason.
August 24th, 2011 at 2:11 PM
Hawks suck, especially that pretty boy Kane.
Just trying to get back into the swing of things!
August 24th, 2011 at 2:12 PM
you can’t take stats from 3 games and extrapolate them over 16 games to make an argument. unless you want your argument to have no validity whatsoever. you just can’t do it.
August 24th, 2011 at 2:15 PM
Based on the six quarters Matt Flynn played in high pressure situations his full season would have meant 4,565 yards with 32 touchdown passes, Pro Bowler!
August 24th, 2011 at 2:16 PM
he lacks WR and TE instincts too. could you imagine him trying to learn to block and having his first exposure be against NFL DLmen and LB’s? not good.
they’re both longshots…but about as much of one as him at QB. that’s all.
August 24th, 2011 at 2:20 PM
can’t do that…different offensive scheme, different season and tebow had all of last offseason to prepare.
if you read that silver article, they mention that the lockout offseason hurt tebow a lot. you qb’s struggle with scheme changes so it’s not that big of a surprise to go from mcdaniels’ pseudo-spread to fox’s WCO-type thing.
August 24th, 2011 at 2:21 PM
What do you mean by “you qb’s” spencer, you racist?
August 24th, 2011 at 2:22 PM
I extrapolate from Max Hall’s 3 starts last year that he would put up these numbers. 5tds 32Ints 1600yards. I buy that.
August 24th, 2011 at 2:22 PM
Oh I wouldn’t move him to H-back until I was certain he couldn’t make at QB. Definitely not TE/WR. He would have to be off the LOS otherwise he would get locked up by DLman. At this point, I would spend effort in making him a viable QB.
August 24th, 2011 at 2:23 PM

Don’t make this another post about Mark Sanchez in the playoffs please.
August 24th, 2011 at 2:25 PM
I’m not saying he WOULD play like that for 16 games, just that when he DID play, he played acceptably well. But there seems to be this consensus that he looked mostly like shit last year.
August 24th, 2011 at 2:27 PM
im saying they should have their own schools and ESPN specials away from other players because they’re so disgusting.
August 24th, 2011 at 2:28 PM
to be fair, the all-blue broncos unis are pretty ugly.
August 24th, 2011 at 2:44 PM
This is all so, so funny.
August 24th, 2011 at 3:56 PM
imagine if he was black…
/no idea where I am going with that.
August 24th, 2011 at 4:56 PM
Fuck. Left to Paolo this thing…
First of all: Orton >>>> Sanchez. Just to get that out there.
Second: hyperbole is fun and everything, but the fact is the kid is a second-year QB who literally no one, including McDaniels, thought would be anything other than a big-time project. There is no actual controversy here beyond what Bristol and, yes, folks like yourself are fomenting.
Now THIS is some real talk.

If you take Uncle Rico’s stats from that fourth quarter he should have played if only the coach woulda put him in and extrapolate them over a season, how much you wanna bet he can throw a football over them mountains? And he woulda been state champion.

You folks better hope that Timmy’s religion isn’t the correct one. Because eternity is a long time to spend sucking on Satan’s lolly-pop.
