Jered Weaver Signs An Extension With The Angels, Despite Scott Boras’ Advice
Scott Boras must be pissed at Jered Weaver right now. Instead of riding out the final year and a half of his contract and watching the Yankees, Red Sox and Mets start a bidding war that would have landed him well over a hundred million dollars, the 28-year-old All-Star signed a five year extension with LA worth just $85 million. While Boras is stuck lamenting his lost percentage, Weaver seems alright with his decision. Via ESPN.com:
“If $85 (million) is not enough to take care of my family and other generations of families then I’m pretty stupid, but how much money do you really need in life?” Weaver said Tuesday. “I’ve never played this game for the money. I played it for the love and the competitive part of it. It just so happens that baseball’s going to be taking care of me for the rest of my life.”
He has a point. While this was his one shot at “C.C. Sabathia money,” Weaver should have another decent contract in him if his body holds up. Plus, $85 million isn’t anything to sneeze at. It’s nice to see a baseball player be content to settle for a lot of money for once.

How is Boras supposed to feed his family only getting 6% of $85 million? That’s only $5.1 million pre-tax. How will he survive?

by eating the children, of course.

They were talking about this on the radio show this morning out here. Weaver had some nice quotes about growing up in a time when players were loyal to their teams and he had no problem taking a “hometown discount” to stay with the Angels. They were talking about here wondering if the same could be said for Cain (FA after ’12) or Timmy (FA after ’13). Here’s hoping they take a page from Weaver’s book and not Boras’!

Tormented by guilt, I tried to council him. But the eating….it filled him with white light.

Considering how his draft negotiations went and him going to arbitration every year in addition to being a Boras client this was quite the shock and a hell of a deal for the Angels as well.

Are either of them actually from the Bay Area? The Weaver’s are from Southern California (San Fernando Valley, I think?)

Didn’t we have this discussion in the comments of another thread already?

No, neither one. But they’ve both seemed like the types that have more love for the game than the money. But when push comes to shove, you just never know.

BCan.. that was my thought. Boras must have been pissed, and Weaver even said that he was unhappy.
That quote is my favorite part, that I quoted in the earlier thread, and really hope it buys him some goodwill with fans. Now if the owner lowers ticket prices in one section when Weaver starts, for kids or something (basically giving away some of the savings on the contract) the good will would be overflowing.

Fantastic!

Good for Weaver. Hope he stays healthy through the life of the contract.

I would bet on Lincecum wanting to stay unless Seattle drastically improved.

$85 million guaranteed.
He could blow out his elbow in 12 months. I like this move on his part.

That made me laugh.

What’s the point of having Scott Boras as an agent if you’re not going to become a free agent? He should have negotiated this deal himself and saved the agent fees.
