Colts Sign Kerry Collins, So Prepare for Another Two Weeks of Annoying WILL PEYTON PLAY? Stories
Jim Irsay, the attention-whore owner of the Colts who has taken to Twitter like my 5-month old has taken to his jump-a-roo, dropped a BOMBSHELL this morning: Indianapolis signed veteran QB Kerry Collins.
First thought of every football fan on the planet: SO PEYTON MANNING MIGHT NOT PLAY IN WEEK 1?
Manning, as everyone is aware, had neck surgery in May – his second such procedure in 15 months. He hasn’t played a down this preseason, and some have speculated that his consecutive games streak of 208 (in the regular season) – which is the 2nd longest in NFL history – could be in jeopardy. Manning’s played through pain before, and he hasn’t had to go through any rigorous offseason workouts, but hey, maybe he won’t play in week one!
The Colts have never had a capable backup QB (the Jets still thank Curtis Painter for his awesome showing near the end of the 2009 regular season), and pulling Kerry Collins out of retirement is the sort of transaction that will turn heads and have every ESPN talking head foaming at the mouth for the next couple weeks. The Colts are familiar with Collins, obviously – he played in the AFC South the last five seasons and team president Bill Polian was the GM of the Panthers when they drafted Collins 5th overall in 1996.
I’m going to sit back and watch ESPN chew up hours of air-time on whether or not Manning will start in the opener against Houston in 18 days. Yes, I can totally see an AFC contender like the Colts thrusting a 38-year-old QB into the starting lineup for a team he’s been a part of for less than three weeks.
There are conflicting reports out of Vegas about the line for the game. The game is off-the-board in some places; others have the Texans -3. I think Vegas has better news than the reporters covering this story, so Sin City will be my gauge for the next two weeks.

I gotta say…the way the Colts have handled their backup QB position has been iffy. I know Pey Pey is a rock, but everyone gets injured here or there. They should have at least had a competent backup. They had to know Painter was garbage. Why did it take this long to upgrade?

I forgot that having an HBO mini series about your team where you are a primary character is modest.

This is a bombshell as much as it is jarring. Jim Irsay’s twitter account is also a voluntary follow the last time I checked.
You’re more stirring some salt into tepid water so that is comes to a boil than sitting back.

Is this sarcasm, because I honestly did not think this.

I’m still stunned that Kerry Collins has over 40K of passing yardage in his career.

August 24th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
oh hell no…i LOVE those articles. loved michael silver’s article saying that adam weber is now ahead of tebow on the production based depth chart.
August 24th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
I think this is a legitimate story, only because he is literally the only player in the NFL who makes his team a Super Bowl contender with him, but a legitimate Andrew Luck Derby contender without him.
August 24th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
Still prefere this over “AMERICA IN CRISIS: TIM TEBOW IS THIRD STRING” stories
This wasn’t a surprise for anyone who could see and knew football.
August 24th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
you know the moment Peyton misses a start before breaking Favre’s pain killer inflated record, ESPN will have Favre on every show to talk about it.
it’s really in America’s best interest that Peyton starts the game, even if he has to sit the remainder of the game.
August 24th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
I baby-sat for a family last summer that had one of those jump-a-roo things on their rooftop deck. They turned it into a waterslide and filled the bottom of the slide with water. I would have killed for one of those when I was little.

I am praying that Kerry Collins starts Week 1 just so I can see the look of horror on the faces of my friends that are Colts fans
August 24th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
This. Plus he’s my starting fantasy qb right now, so he has to play.

You beat me to it. I would love to hear the draft “experts” talking points if they compared Weber and Tebow’s NFL prospects

I think he’s calling everyone on Twitter an attention whore. But TBL is also on Twitter, so….the law of syllogism is about to make me call the EIC a bad name, so I should just stop.

loved this from silver’s tebow article…
August 24th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
Watching Tebow defenders pull everything out of the bag to say he’s still a QB is a joy. Josh McDaniels should forever be known as the idiot coach who drafted this guy in the 1st round. You don’t draft H-Backs who want to play QB in the 1st freaking round. I know so many wanted this guy to succeed in the NFL, but it was always a tough sell when you looked at what he did well and what we needed to improve on.
August 24th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
For all the talk about Tebow’s need to improve his mechanics, Broncos sources say his lack of familiarity with running a pro-style offense is an even more egregious issue. As one executive says, “Forget about how he delivers the ball, or how accurate it is. First he has to know where to go with it.”

I was the biggest Tebow hater around but I have somewhat softened my stance mainly because I almost feel bad for him. The weight of Christians everywhere sits on his shoulders and it’s going to turn out that he’s incapable of being a legit NFL QB.

It is silly. He’s either ready or he isn’t. And he isn’t.
This is why it was better for him to fall to some team without an immediate QB need in the 3rd-4th round. No pressure. No issues. He could learn and develop, a la Rodgers in Green Bay.

I hope this is the case with most tennis fans. One more for him, then let the new era really begin in 2012. Djoker and Nadal should be fun to watch for the next 3-5. I want to see if he can beat him at Roland Garros. It’s my least favorite major but I would watch that Final for sure.

Nadal doesn’t last 3-5 years I don’t think. And I still think Djoker is the favorite.

Brah called him gay. Which is ridiculous. A dead 2-year old girl is still a girl
See.. now that’s funny.

I don’t know about Djokovic’s chances at the Open. He was in rough shape on Sunday, dead tired and a dead arm. I agree that this is a great chance for Fed to get one last major.

It morphed from him hating almost every girl most of the guys here think is hot.
August 24th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
I’d say the Colts have done a great job managing the backup QB spot. They have committed minimum dollars to the position over the years and its never seen the field in meaningful action.
August 24th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
Elegant, simple, perfect delivery. +1 for Stark.

0 hours here. I’ll go with that too.

Jersey better come back once football season starts. You people…

Aren’t you the one giving most of the guys on here shit for thinking girls that aren’t hot are hot?

The biggest loser in this thread? Kerry Collins whose return to glory has totally been thrown by the wayside

That or they lucked into drafting Peyton Manning in 1998, who has turned out to be the most sturdy QB since Brett Favre. If the Colts win one more game and the Chargers lose one more, they switch places and Leaf ends up a Colt.
August 24th, 2011 at 12:46 PM
where did he go? i haven’t been around enough lately to keep up…
August 24th, 2011 at 12:47 PM
ohhh…going out on a Tuesday? Who was the lucky gentleman and how well did he play the back 9?
August 24th, 2011 at 12:47 PM
Now I’m honestly confused. What does that have to do with you being called gay?
August 24th, 2011 at 12:47 PM

he said he’s been traveling a lot. boats n’ hoes and such.

Beats me, Spence. He’s been traveling a lot, he just moved and I have no idea if he’s found a new job yet. I know he’s planning on coming to Athens but I really have no idea what’s going on with him right now.
August 24th, 2011 at 12:48 PM
Who knows… he’s probably out using the earthquake for sympathy sex right now.
August 24th, 2011 at 12:49 PM
Other than Curtis Painter graciously letting the Jets in the playoffs.
August 24th, 2011 at 12:50 PM
Another aspect to that “what if”…..if Peyton had been drafted by the Chargers, would he have gone there? Remember that Elisha did not want to play in San Diego for whatever reason.
August 24th, 2011 at 12:51 PM
he’s probably out using the earthquake for sympathy sex right now.
Hats off to that man.
August 24th, 2011 at 12:51 PM
If Jim Sorgi was still on the roster there would be no cause for concern in Indy
August 24th, 2011 at 12:51 PM
No, SG does not go out on Saturday nights with men because they are only interested in one thing. Giving her the disappointed dog.
August 24th, 2011 at 12:51 PM
Wouldn’t Tebbow make a good FB?
August 24th, 2011 at 12:51 PM
I forget, did the Chargers have Manning above Leaf? A lot of people (including Bill Walsh, IIRC) had Leaf #1, so the two may have ended up where they were even if they had switched spots.
August 24th, 2011 at 12:52 PM
that sounds like something he’d do.
August 24th, 2011 at 12:52 PM
Now I’m honestly confused. What does that have to do with you being called gay?
Nothing. I’ve always thought my opinions of which girls are attractive were more in line with your opinions than someone like SC. Which is why I find it odd that you object so much with my comments. I guess I was wrong.
August 24th, 2011 at 12:53 PM
Really cool obscure note though:
1997: Sun October 26 Ind: 19 SD: 35
In week 9, SD and Indy played a game for the rights to Peyton Manning. Surprised I’ve never heard that before.
August 24th, 2011 at 12:54 PM

It might not have been that difficult but this was still good prognostication by CJ

didn’t find the quote, but walsh did say he wouldn’t take peyton no. 1 (take another player and take brian griese in round 2). can’t find what he said about leaf tho…
August 24th, 2011 at 12:55 PM
I nearly searched through pro football reference to see if they had played each other in 1997. Very interesting.

http://tnjn.com/2008/apr/26/nfl-draft-a-decade-removed-fro/
Seemed like a cool read from skimming it.
SD actually moved from 3 to 2 that draft, but a loss to Indy would have gotten them the first pick, plus let them keep an extra first, second and Eric Metcalf.
August 24th, 2011 at 12:58 PM
I know, it seems like just last week that he was choking it up in the second round of another major.
/oh wait, it was
August 24th, 2011 at 12:59 PM
Kevin Gilbride, June Jones and Mike Riley couldn’t have helped Leaf. Not that the senior Mora did a whole lot for Peyton, but once Dungy got the job he was off and running.
August 24th, 2011 at 12:59 PM

/stupid moderation
August 24th, 2011 at 1:04 PM
Walsh didn’t have Leaf over Manning, but he DID like him a lot and thought he’d be a star. It’s why I like to see the post last week about Landry Jones getting a 4th round grade… if QBs are all hit or miss, pick either a ‘hit’ or a ‘miss’. Don’t just slot him in because there aren’t enough ‘hits’ or you’ll end up with Jim Druckenmiller.
Another way to put it… people look at Jake Locker, and say he’s a top 5 pick if they like him, or a top 20 pick if not. If you think he’ll be a star, a star QB is a top 5 pick. If he’ll be a bust, then he shouldn’t be in the top 3 rounds at all. Who knows if that makes sense, lucky this thread is almost dead.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:04 PM
I blame it on your uterus.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:06 PM
and say he’s a top 5 pick if they like him, or a top 20 pick if not.
I thought more 5th round project for Locker but I agree with your thesis
August 24th, 2011 at 1:07 PM
it makes sense.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:10 PM
Go check out Peyton’s stretch from 1999-2001, was pretty damn good then save for a bout of picks in ’01 but that wasn’t a very good team…dunno why Tony Dungy would ever get credited for a quarterback’s development either
August 24th, 2011 at 1:12 PM
peter king says dungy’s responsible for vick’s comeback.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:16 PM
Mora wasn’t really adding anything to the team though, Butters. The whole team started to play better once Dungy arrived. Helped that they got better players of course.
August 24th, 2011 at 1:22 PM
So SC are you gonna eventually tell the strip club story?
August 24th, 2011 at 5:10 PM
What does that make Rex Ryan?
